Dear Seven Hills family and friends, On behalf of our students and our superb faculty and staff, it is my privilege to thank you for all your efforts to support the school during the 2016-17 year.

As most of you know, for the last four years, our administrative team has been focused on enacting the program and facilities enhancements enumerated in the Strategic Plan of 2013.

Relative to our educational program, our focus has been on expanding opportunities for students in the following three critical areas: 1. Global Awareness Preparing students for a rapidly changing and increasingly interconnected global community.

1. Implemented greater global and contemporary emphasis in history and literature courses 2. Established new elective courses with global or contemporary emphasis: Global Issues: Asia, Global Issues: Non-Asia, Environmental Science, Environmental History, Race and Society, archaeology, and entrepreneurship 3. New world language options a. Aligned Lower School Spanish classes with stronger communicative emphasis b. Added “bridge year� in sixth-grade Spanish to retain Lower School skills and vocabulary c. Added Middle and Upper Chinese courses 4. Expanded travel/exchange programs to include: a. Annual Downey China Program and biennial exchanges to Spain and France, service learning trips, as well as trips to Greece and Italy every three years 2. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Fostering an aptitude for using technology as a tool to address challenges and improve lives.

Piloted Experiential Learning intensives (May 2018) At the same time, under the superb leadership of 2014-2017 Board Chair Beth Schiff, the Board of Trustees has spearheaded an ambitious program to modernize the school’s educational facilities. Between 2013 and 2016, the Board of Trustees and a handful of donors close to the school provided almost $9 million in funding for four new facilities. We are so grateful to the generous donors who made these important improvements possible!

Jones Hall renovation (August 2016) Each of these projects has represented a quantum leap forward, providing state-of-the-art facilities, which both fully support our programmatic aspirations and unleash the creativity and imagination of our superb faculty.

As we move into the fifth and final implementation year of our ambitious strategic plan, we are very proud of the dramatic progress we have already made. And, in some ways, the best is yet to come. As Beth Schiff’s letter in this publication makes clear, we are now moving into the critical, final stage of our efforts to modernize the school’s facilities. Stay tuned!

C H A I R

Dear friends, What a privilege it has been to chair Seven Hills’ Board of Trustees for the last three years!

As a school community, we are incredibly blessed to have secured the interest and involvement of so many talented people.

We have superb faculty and staff who have been laser-focused on being the best at getting better. Over the last four years, especially, the faculty and the administrative team have worked tirelessly to develop a host of innovative new programs, which have aligned Seven Hills’ educational program with best practices at some of the nation’s leading schools.

As Chris’ own letter in this publication makes clear, now, more than ever before, we know that our graduates are going off to college fully prepared to capitalize on the tremendous head start a school like Seven Hills provides.

We are also blessed with talented and deeply engaged volunteers, not only our trustees, but a host of other volunteers and generous donors who have devoted their work, wealth, and wisdom to guiding the school on its path forward. Over the past several years, we have reaped the rewards of this expertise and commitment in countless ways. Guided by the Master Site Plan developed in the Strategic Plan of 2013, we have made, already, several strategic investments in our Lower School facilities. Phase One of our capital fundraising effort built the new Nellie Leaman Taft Early Childhood Center on the Hillsdale Campus and the fabulous renovations of Jones Hall and the new playground on the Doherty Campus. These projects have positioned the school to thrive in an extremely competitive Lower School market. At the same time, our investment in some of our athletic facilities, both the gymnasiums and the new Lower Fields complex, have underscored the school’s signature commitment to providing a fully inclusive athletic experience for all who want to participate.

And we are not finished yet! Thanks to the leadership of the Board and more than 100 early donors, we are moving ever closer to enacting Phase Two of our Master Site Plan.

1. Tennis Court Relocation As I write, construction is well underway on six new tennis courts on property we own, north of the Hillsdale Campus track.

2. Center for Arts and Leadership This 45,000-square-foot facility, to be built on the footprint of our current tennis courts, will include a 500-seat auditorium as well as additional classroom, rehearsal, and performance spaces for our performing arts program in all four divisions. It will also create a suitable venue for the planned extension of assembly programs, convocations, and special events that are so critical to building our school community. Construction of this new facility will also free up more than 6,000-square-feet of underutilized gathering space that will be repurposed as classroom and laboratory space.

3. Field House Currently, Seven Hills fields 122 athletic teams in grades one through 12. In the winter season alone, 22 basketball teams share three courts. Construction of a new four-court field house, adjacent to the new tennis courts, will permit Middle and Upper School teams to practice, or play games, simultaneously. It will also allow Lower School teams to practice earlier, getting our student athletes home by dinner. This new indoor facility will also be used extensively during the school day for physical education classes and in the shoulder seasons (late fall and early spring) when inclement weather often forces cancellation of outdoor games and practices.

We are now achingly close to securing the $20 million in funding we need to complete these critical projects. With the generous support of our trustees and a great many other school leaders, we have already secured more than 80 percent of the funding. We have come a long way, but there is still some work to do. It is our ardent hope, if at all possible, to have completed the fundraising and be in a position to break ground by May 2018 and have the new facilities ready for use by August 2019.

It has been a great privilege to lead the Board through this incredibly fruitful time of growth and development and to leave the Board in the capable hands of Jen Stein, who has, herself, been such an integral part of all we have achieved in the past three years.

I know Jen joins me in expressing our heartfelt gratitude to all of you who have helped, in ways large and small, to nurture the continuing evolution of Seven Hills. How lucky we all are to be able to support a school community which has had such a tremendous impact on the lives of our children!

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS

97 SCORED 3 OR HIGHER ON AP EXAMS

In May 2017, 132 students took 288 Advanced Placement exams in 15 subjects. 97% of them earned collegequalifying scores of 3 or higher. 80% of students scored 4’s and 5’s.

46 seniors, more than half the class, and 29 juniors were recognized as AP Scholars, scoring 3 or above on at least three Advanced Placement exams.

The “mid-50%” of ACT scores for the Class of 2017 are as follows: English: 26-35, average 30; Math: 26-32, average 29; Reading: 27-33, average 30; and Science: 25-35, average 30.

Overall, students had a composite score of 26-33 and an average of 30.

The “mid-50%” of SAT scores for the Class of 2017 are as follows: EBRW: (Verbal) 620-710, average 656; and MSS (Math): 580-730, average 650. Overall, students had

20% of the Class of 2018 earned National Merit recognition. Eleven students from the graduating Class of 2017 were named National Merit Finalists.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS Throughout the school year, our students took part in assemblies, programs, community service projects, and travel opportunities that built upon the multifaceted, rich learning experiences synonymous with Seven Hills’ academic culture. The many opportunities included: Students participated in programs that reinforced the strong sense of community at Seven Hills: the Kindness Retreat in Lower, the Courage Retreat in Middle, and the Senior Culminating Experience and Class Day in Upper.

Schoolwide, service learning played an important part in the 2016-17 school year, including: students on the Doherty Campus singing at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center; Lotspeich students raising money for Heifer International; Middle Schoolers volunteering at Matthew 25 Ministries on Martin Luther King Jr. Day; and Upper School’s mornings of volunteering at the Bethany House.

Our students explored the broader world through a number of experiential learning opportunities in the form of field trips to Dearborn, Michigan, Washington, D.C., North Carolina, and Knoop Farm, as well as studies abroad through our foreign exchange program in France, which included a stop in Belgium.

ATHLETICS 80 percent (1,224 participants, including students playing more than one sport) of our students in grades one through 12 participated in at least one competitive athletic team during the 2016-17 school year. In addition, 37 Upper School students were recognized as threeseason athletes. One senior was recognized as a 12-season athlete, having played three seasons a year during each year of Upper School.

Schoolwide, Seven Hills fielded 103 teams in 2016-17—43 in the fall, 32 in the winter, and 28 in the spring.

Seven Hills won four MVC championships in volleyball, boys swimming, boys tennis, and girls tennis throughout the 2016-17 school year.

SUMMER

Seven Hills students distinguished themselves in a host of academic competitions across the state of Ohio in 2016-17: Certamen (classics); MATHCOUNTS; Louder than a Bomb youth poetry contest; Mock Trial; American Math Competitions; Rose-Hulman math competition; Ohio Junior Classical League Fall Forum; WCPO Region II Spelling Bee; and the national Stock Market Game, to name a few.

Two fifth- and sixth-grade boys soccer teams advanced to the state tournament, competing in the SAY finals.

The golf team claimed a state championship during the fall season. In boys swimming, Seven Hills claimed one team runnerup title and, in girls swimming, an individual, two-time state champion. In the spring, a junior was named state champion in tennis. An Upper School student also claimed a runner-up state championship in girls bowling. Six coaches were named MVC Coaches of the Year in boys swimming, boys and girls tennis, boys soccer, softball, and volleyball.

The 2017 Summer Program had a total enrollment of 423 children, ages 3 to 16. The Summer Program provides participants an opportunity to explore their interests and discover new ones over the course of a summer.

in girls tennis, boys cross-country, boys swimming, girls swimming, girls lacrosse, girls volleyball, and boys tennis. Three students were recognized by the MVC for sportsmanship.

224 student athletes were recognized as MVC Scholar Athletes. Varsity athletes are required to earn a GPA of 3.495 or higher to qualify. One student, who was named All-City Player of the Year, was also named to an AllState team. Eleven swimmers were named to the All-State team. The boys tennis coach was also named All-City Coach of the Year.

The renovated track on the Hillsdale Campus opened in August 2016.

Renovations to Jones Hall on the Doherty Campus were completed in August 2016.

Founders Hall and the Doherty cafeteria underwent extensive renovations in the summer of 2017, opening to students at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year.

Doherty’s gym was also renovated to include new bleachers and refinished floors.

NEW COURSES AND PROGRAMS

Lotspeich and Doherty students learned to quiet their minds and put their creativity to the test. Lower School students of all ages began an in-depth study of mindfulness in 2016-17.

Lotspeich second-grade teacher Danielle Necessary, a trained mindfulness educator, led children in mindfulness lessons during their morning assemblies. First- through fifthgraders also used an interactive bulletin board that promoted empathy and mindfulness by allowing students to share kind and inspiring lessons. Students on the Doherty Campus are learning and discovering in the Creation Studio, which was renovated in August 2016. The studio features Apple desktop computers, 3-D printers, and plenty of odds and ends to let students’ imaginations run wild. The Creation Studio is as busy as ever, as students build bridges, design roller coasters, and create Passion Projects during the school year.

Middle School students had an opportunity to participate in the new eighth-grade Chinese program launched for the 2016-17 year, giving students the opportunity to expand on language skills acquired in seventh grade. In fall 2017, the Middle School implemented Second Step, an

advisory and guidance program that gives students the tools for emotion management.

Upper School introduced two new electives in fall 2016—archaeology and an Experiential Learning seminar in entrepreneurship.

Students in archaeology learned from a host of guest speakers and activities such as simulated archaeological site digs. In the entrepreneurship class, an Experiential Learning seminar, students worked with entrepreneurs from around Cincinnati. They developed their own business pitches and shared them with local business executives in a presentation similar to the popular television program Shark Tank.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 65 teachers from the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools attended professional development workshops in Ohio and nationwide, including New York, Illinois, New Mexico, and Oregon.

STUDENTS OF COLOR

ENROLLMENT School opened in August 2016 with 419 Lower School students in pre-kindergarten for 2-year-olds through fifth grade, 249 Middle School students, and 344 Upper School students.

Enrollment in pre-kindergarten for 2-year-olds remained strong at both Doherty and Lotspeich, marked by an increase from the 2015-16 school year.

In 2016-17, a total of 21 students were enrolled at the two Lower Schools.

AFTER THE BELL After the Bell, which offers enrichment activities after school, had another great year. A total of 702 students in pre-kindergarten through Middle School participated in music lessons, enrichment programs, and Encore Club.

Students of color made up 32% of the school’s total enrollment in 2016-17.

T HEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS & CONCERTS

FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS During the 2016-17 school year, 100% of students in the Lower, Middle, and Upper schools participated in arts programs. In the Upper School, more than 80% of students took additional courses, going beyond the 1.5 credits required for arts.

The performing arts faculty directed 38 productions and concerts; 25 in Lower School and 13 in Middle and Upper in the 2016-17 school year. In fall 2016, the Upper School staged the classic play Treasure Island. The production won two Cappies, a national studentdirected competition similar to the Tony Awards, and was nominated for several more.

Students were recognized in the categories of Featured Actress and Creativity in Directing.

The visual arts faculty hosted two Upper School art shows featuring student work. As part of an Upper School student’s Personal Challenge project, the Lotspeich and Middle School art teachers helped curate an art show featuring work

from students in grades three through eight.

Seven Hills participated in major arts competitions throughout the school year, including the Cappies, Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, Ohio Junior Thespian Conference, Junior Theater Festival West in California, and Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event. Our Middle and Upper School students received prestigious recognition for their efforts.

Upper School students had many opportunities to take their arts education above and beyond.

The contemporary instrumental ensemble played and learned from a visiting local recording artist during professional music clinics. Visual arts students used professional filmmaker technology to animate 3-D objects, and Upper theater students established the Seven Hills troupe of the International Thespian Society. Our chorus students traveled to New York City in spring 2017 and performed at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.

IN ONE SCHOOL YEAR, WE ALL ARE GIVEN ROUGHLY

200 DAY S.

Two-hundred days to learn something meaningful, impart wisdom, make mistakes, apply grit, and reflect. Two-hundred days to give. Two hundred days to grow. In those days throughout the 2016-17 academic year at Seven Hills, our school community charted new paths of success, inspired others to take risks, believed in its capabilities, acted on its dreams, and became stronger by learning to lean on each other.

Our college counseling department welcomed admissions representatives from nearly 100 colleges, our theater department claimed two prestigious Cappie Awards, our newly-established counseling department expanded its existing social-emotional curriculum to the Middle and Upper schools, and the athletics department celebrated two unprecedented state championships in tennis and golf. We renovated makerspaces that have changed the way our students learn daily, and we cleared acres of land to make way for athletic spaces that will change the way our students practice sportsmanship and leadership on the courts and fields. During the last year, we watched 11 engineering students use design thinking to help a classmate navigate his college campus, and during the presidential election, we watched as our history department morphed into an ever-ready font of wisdom, giving students endless opportunities to learn from real-world applications.

The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity, and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this annual report.

The school maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which are designed to provide assurance to the school’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements.

The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the school, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee that includes engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented.

The school has again maintained a balanced budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2017. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the school, the administration, faculty and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning.

Schoolwide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking student-faculty ratios, and removing under-enrolled programs.

The overall financial health of the school was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development, and distinctive programming and technology.

Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the school. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.

he Stinger girls soccer team was wrapping up a two-hour practice last year with one last drill. “We were told to run around the soccer field a certain number of times in the blazing hot sun,” said threesport-athlete junior Jessica Nordlund. “After about 20 minutes everyone had crossed the last line— except for one freshman. Everyone was tired, but the entire team decided to finish the last lap with her. That feeling of family and commitment is one I will never forget.”

Nordlund’s moving account sums up the blend of support, conviction, and pride that powers Seven Hills’ collective athletic community—from Lower through Upper School. In one year, Seven Hills student athletes and coaches have used that positive energy to accomplish uncharted achievements, earn two state championships, and reach new heights.

Seven Hills’ burgeoning athletic program has seen state championships in all three seasons—a spectacular golf state championship win, a girls swimming state championship, boys tennis singles state championship, and a runner-up state championship in girls bowling and boys swimming. In addition, Seven Hills claimed a third-place state finish in boys tennis, and a rise in the popularity of track and field, due in part to the recent, state-of-the-art update to our track on the Hillsdale Campus. The success of Seven Hills’ athletic program is also owed to the hours of practice, dedication, and overall grueling schedules carried out by our student athletes and coaches, and supported by the program’s backbone—our families.

long-term success. The season ended on a very strong note with the team reaching the Sweet 16 of the state tournament, ultimately unseated by the number one seed in an incredibly hard-fought game.

TALENT AND FOCUS Phelps’ energy is echoed throughout Seven Hills’ athletic program. When golf coach Doug Huff talks about the Stinger boys golf team’s first championship in recent history, he points to talent, leadership, and focus.

Those capabilities are the result of a dedicated regimen of strength training and conditioning, practice, and mental skills discipline, the latter of which is delivered by Experiential Learning Director Nick Francis, who also teaches sports psychology skills to Seven Hills athletes.

“Our golf team is a true testament of what Seven Hills produces, in terms of commitment to excellence,” said Huff. “We had a talented group of golfers and, at the same time, such a great group of guys. This year they all had the capability of playing at a higher level and they owned it.”

TEAM BEFORE SELF The energy and skill behind Seven Hills’ powerhouse boys lacrosse team points to what head coach Nick Greiwe calls “a total family dynamic and brotherhood.” In his

Seven Hills Athletic Director Brian Phelps said the collective strength and spirit of our athletic program reflects the progress and potential of its flourishing teams, individual players, and expanding reputation throughout the tri-state area.

“What we want people to remember is just how big Seven Hills’ athletic program is,” said Phelps. “We start organized sports in first grade and baseball and lacrosse start in first grade and third grade, respectively.

Schoolwide, we have 30 soccer teams in the fall and 25 basketball teams in the winter.

I am excited that we have the opportunity to have top-notch facilities for all of our student athletes.”

JUMPING IN COLD WATER EVERY DAY On most days throughout the winter season, Seven Hills swimmers were jumping into a cold pool at 5:30 a.m., swimming for 90 minutes, attending school, finishing homework, and turning in early enough to have the energy to do it all over again the next morning.

Swim coach Brandon Williams said the leading swim team continues to make Seven Hills history, having claimed it's most-recent individual state championship with Lucy Callard’s 500 Free in the 2016-17 school year, and two championships and a runner-up to the championship over the past three years.

“The great thing about our program is it’s comprised of a mix of students—we have swimmers whose entire worlds are swimming, swimmers who play two other sports, and swimmers who are just getting started,” said Williams, who became Seven Hills’ assistant athletic director this fall. “But what is the same is that they’re all dedicated.

And they’re all bonding. That’s the goal.”

20 6 - 7 POWERED BY LEADERSHIP The sense of pride was almost tangible for 34-year Seven Hills track and field and cross-country coach Tana Luckie, as her

student athletes competed on Seven Hills’ newly refurbished track on April 29, 2017.

For the first time in several years, Luckie was coaching her team of 31 at a home meet on

the school’s brand new track. Before that, a worn and well-used track surface didn’t lend itself to hosting meets. Those days are over.

An unprecedented number of senior athletes who joined the team this year gave Luckie and assistant coach Isabelle Kalubi ’00 one of the largest teams in Luckie’s coaching history. But more than the attraction to the new track was a renewed interest among upperclassmen to move into leadership roles and try something new in a sport that runs a short two-month season.

The school’s new Seven Hills Athletic Leadership Team also played a significant role in bolstering students’ confidence on and off the track, said Luckie.

“Our seniors have made a huge difference this year,” said Luckie. “The older students provide mentorship for our underclassmen and they all have an example of what a team is supposed to be like. That feeling and that knowledge will carry on for years to come.”

“POWERHOUSE TEAM, POWERHOUSE YEAR” The Seven Hills tennis program has accomplished nearly three decades of winning seasons in a row, almost always ranking in Ohio’s top 10 every year. This year’s season ended with a state title championship claimed by Nick Williams, and the girls team claimed its fourth straight Miami Valley League title, won the Greater Cincinnati Coaches’ Classic Tournament, and finished the season ranked fifth in the state.

The boys team reclaimed the Miami Valley League title, ended the season ranked third in the state, and had a win over the first ranked team in Ohio.

Although wins and titles have meaning, coach Tim Drew also defines a season’s success by the building of a cohesive team through leadership opportunities.

“There’s a real continuity between the Middle School and Upper School programs,” said Drew. “That’s because (Middle School tennis coaches) Sue Bone and Russell White send up kids who are prepared.” Drew also credits Seven Hills’ athletic leadership for supporting one of the school’s powerhouse sports.

“Brian Phelps dedicated a fourth coach as of the 2016-17 year, and that’s a big commitment for the school,” said Drew.

“That, along with the building of the new tennis complex, will help out with our growing numbers of tennis players.”

In addition to the added support and enhanced facilities, the consistently strong numbers point to a thriving program that will continue to flourish because Seven Hills’ student athletes are committed to their teammates.

A GROWING VISION

F O R S T E M C U R R I C U L U M AT T H E S E V E N H I L L S S C H O O L That sense of empowerment is why Tracy Hickenlooper, Director of Program Design and Technology, looked forward to opening the renovated Creation Studio on the Doherty campus during the 2016-17 school year. The renovated space includes work tables, a computer lab, and enough readily available stored materials to inspire endless projects.

hroughout spring semester of the 2016-17 school year, 11 Seven Hills engineering students worked on a project in which they were hugely invested.

The students in Doug Ford’s class were on a mission to make navigation easier for their friend and classmate Shane DiGiovanna, whose medical condition, epidermolysis bullosa, makes his skin blister easily. To help DiGiovanna get around at Rice University this fall, DiGiovanna and his classmates designed, prototyped, and built an easy-access backpack that opens with hook and loop fasteners, as well as a number of small tools, a hook, and a fitted arm cuff for DiGiovanna to use for easy access to the tools.

By the end of the semester, each Seven Hills student contributing to the project had put in 50 to 60 hours of focused, intentional work.

The intense collaboration of Seven Hills’ Upper School engineering class is a dynamic example of how design thinking fulfills a mission to affect positive change and improve the lives of others—a culture of thought pervasive at Seven Hills.

Design Thinking class remains one of few formalized, core Middle School programs of its 2 in the Midwest. During the 2016-17 school kind year, a sixth-grade class was added to the curriculum, and the past year marked the second year of a seventh-grade design thinking curriculum in which seventh-graders presented their problem-solving innovations to local STEM professionals.

“Our students want to be participants in all of this—in the maker movement, design thinking, in the way STEM is applied overall,” said Glum.

“They want to be creators. There is so much enthusiasm in our sixth-grade Innovation Lab class. After every session, our students walk out educated and empowered to create what they want.”

“What we have now offers the students complete autonomy to become whomever they like—makers, engineers, designers, architects,” said Hickenlooper. “The new space means a lot to the students because they know they have a place specifically designed for their work.”

Lotspeich students in first through fifth grade worked with Project Math teacher Liz Lorenz throughout the year to tackle real world math problems, from square-foot gardening, to city planning, to architecture, just to name a few. For the second year, second-graders designed arcade games using cardboard boxes, which incorporated circuitry with the use of littleBits, an electronic platform for creating inventions.

The project stems from a movement inspired by Caine’s Arcade, a 2012 documentary about 9-year-old Caine Conroy, who built an arcade using boxes in his father’s used auto parts store.

At Seven Hills, design thinking is an everchanging concept around which our faculty will continue to develop meaningful and intentional curriculum. Our students feel at home with design thinking no matter where it takes shape, whether it be in math, art, engineering, or English class, because, year after year, they have been encouraged to find a problem, dive into prototypes, fail fast, evolve forward, and try to make someone’s life a little better.

Throughout the 2016-17 school year, a group of teachers and administrators across grades and divisions established a yearlong STEM task force for the purpose of building a working vision for Seven Hills’ STEM program. The task force defines STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) as an interdisciplinary and applied approach to teaching that occurs at the intersection of STEM fields.

STEM chair and Middle School science teacher Karen Glum, who, along with Head of Middle School Bill Waskowitz, opened the Middle School Innovation Lab in 2015, said Seven Hills’

ast year’s fine and performing arts program at Seven Hills could be described as unprecedented, all-encompassing, innovative, and bold.

Throughout the 2016-17 school year, the Upper chamber ensemble received an "Outstanding" rating at the Ohio Music Education Association Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event, one of our students sang in the Ohio All-State Chorus, Upper School’s contemporary ensemble participated in professional music clinics led by a visiting local recording artist, Upper choruses performed at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, fine arts students employed cutting-edge technology used by major studios to animate 3-D objects, and several students performed in the Cincinnati Junior Strings and the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra. The Upper theater program also claimed two Cappies, the high school equivalent of a Tony Award, in acting and student-directing among several nominations for their fall production of Treasure Island.

Upper School fine arts teachers Jason Knarr and Daniel Vance offered deep dives into high- and low-tech art forms last year. Knarr, who regularly teaches professional-grade

graphics skills, introduced students to the art of rigging 3-D objects. His students were tasked to create a unique character in modeling clay. Then they learned to use a

computer to make a 3-D scan of the object.

Once digitized, the students used professional software to model, rig, texturize, and animate their characters. In Vance’s ceramics and sculpting classes, students are becoming more confident with their work and building larger pieces, as was evident in Seven Hills’ two impressive Upper School art shows during the 2016-17 school year. “My teaching is very influenced by Eastern philosophy,” said Vance. “They are learning that value comes from what is there and usefulness comes from what is not."

In the Middle School, students in Elissa Donovan’s class delved into myriad cultures as they studied various modes of art. They formed clay pots as part of a study of Pacific Northwest culture, designed architectural planters as part of Global Education Day, painted shoes for a 1 project that focused on popular culture, and, using the mathematic process of tessellation, incorporated pattern making for handmade pillows. And with the support of drama teacher Jacob Hauser, theater

students launched their first-ever Junior Thespian Society and attended workshops in all aspects of performance and technical theater. Some Middle School students also attended Theaterpalooza, a student-directed introduction to Upper School theater.

At our Lower Schools, fourth- and fifth-graders made commitments to participate in our new before-school instrumental ensembles on the Lotspeich and Doherty campuses. Determined to hone their talents, the young musicians are sure to be prepared for their Middle School symphonic ensemble debuts with instrumental music teacher John Rising.

A steady rise in interest in the fine arts continues to reach our students at younger

and younger ages. Our youngest prekindergarteners participated in more art classes during the 2016-17 school year and students gained nuanced musical experiences, such as bucket drumming in Doherty music teacher Maria Eynon’s classroom and learning to play hand bells and chimes in Lotspeich music teacher Robin Wilson’s classroom.

The strength of the fine and performing arts department lies in the faculty’s desire to cultivate within our students a lifelong interest in the arts, said Tina Kuhlman, fine and performing arts department chair. “Not only are our arts teachers outstanding educators, they are also successful working artists who are able to bring their professional experiences into the classroom to motivate and inspire our students,” said Kuhlman. “Our faculty recognize that being open to new experiences is the key to creativity.”

he first step toward gaining a rich experience in global awareness begins with taking that step outside of the classroom. In keeping with Seven Hills’ Educational Philosophy, to ensure that students acquire the intellectual and social skills they need to thrive in an increasingly complex global community, Seven Hills faculty design intentional learning opportunities that happen outside the classroom or with someone who has a different perspective. These examples abound when we take a look back at the 2016-17 school year.

In some areas, our students take steps across continents. Seven Hills offers trips on a rotating basis to five different countries, including China, France, Greece and Italy, and Spain. The purpose of the trips mirrors the greater goal of the department—for students to apply their language skills and learn, in greater depth, about the culture and history of each region, said Ann Griep, world languages chair.

“I believe that is what our history department is all about—helping students understand the world all around them and helping them connect to what is happening in the world.”

In other areas, our students take steps across town. In the Upper School, students went on more field trips in the history department than ever before, especially in Seven Hills’ one-year-old archaeology and two-year-old environmental science programs. Ninth-graders also benefited from a new initiative to enrich their understanding of ancient civilizations by going to the Cincinnati Museum Center Vikings exhibit and viewing the ancient and Medieval collections at the Cincinnati Art Museum.

Seven Hills’ history department also continues to play a large role in helping students put together the pieces of complex concepts, such as the presidential election. Throughout the 2016-17 school year, history teacher Dan Polifka held a number of lunch sessions, inviting students to ask questions and offer commentary on the election and the events leading up to it.

“The students hear little snippets about things and they understand some but not all of certain points, so we offer more in-depth information and give it more context,” said history teacher

2 A wonderful, windy trip to Belgium, a stop on students' trip to France

Inspired by their extensive study of rivers, bridges, and leaders, second-graders on the Hillsdale Campus wrapped up their year by taking a three-pronged field trip. They started out at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, where they learned about African-American leaders and the role of the Ohio River at the time of slavery in the U.S., they walked to the Purple People Bridge to study the structure, and then made a short jaunt down to the Ohio River.

“Bridges go over rivers, rivers help build cities and are an important structure within a community, and the Ohio River played an important part in the history of slavery and the significance of crossing from the south to the north,” said second-grade teacher Becky Swain. “It all came together.”

The first-time trip was unique because each stop informed the next, and because the multitude of lessons that flowed from each visit couldn’t have been taught in one day, in any other way.

Seven Hills’ focus on global awareness invites students to reach beyond our borders to understand historic and current events taking place abroad, and how these events affect their daily lives. And in another sense of the word “global,” Seven Hills teachers present information in a multifaceted manner—offering many lenses through which our students see things, learn, and take in information.

The attitudes and actions of one person or one country ripple out to others. Students are encouraged to open their eyes to that and understand their part in this global community.”

ocial-emotional learning remains at the center of Seven Hills’ new counseling department. Under the newly formed department, a number of programs have been put in place in our Lower, Middle, and Upper schools, to promote students’ mental health, said Judy Arnold, school counseling department chair and Lotspeich counselor.

There are new programs in the Middle and Upper schools to extend the concept of using regularly scheduled classroom time for social-emotional learning, which has already been in practice at the Lower School.

“I am grateful that Seven Hills recognizes the necessity for addressing the socialemotional needs of our students and for recognizing the integral part it plays in our students’ success—no matter their age,” said Arnold, now in her 29th year as a school counselor at Seven Hills. "Having a full-time counselor at each division allows us to expand these services.”

several programs about mindfulness, diversity and inclusion, stress management, yoga and meditation, and healthy relationships. At the Middle School, Second Step, a social-emotional learning curriculum, was implemented at the start of the 2017-18 school year by faculty during their weekly advisory class time. The department also introduced Healthy Visions, a curriculum around human

In addition, teaching faculty to be more vigilant about students’ mental health is also being addressed. Last school year, all Seven Hills faculty were trained in suicide prevention techniques. Arnold said counselors and teachers recognize the importance of their role to provide training that will help maintain student mental health and safety.

“When students see that teachers are involved as instructors and supporters of social-emotional learning, that this is a visible and intentional part of the life of the school, it normalizes for them that we all have struggles,” said Arnold. “We believe learning to work through these challenges is an important part of their education.”

In one year, Arnold’s vision of all four counselors working together to infuse social-emotional health into all aspects of our students’ school experience has materialized in meaningful ways. These programs, which speak to the needs of all students, have become part of the permanent fabric of our school culture. For example, the Upper School class meeting time is now being used to focus on social-emotional health, as well as other life skills. Last year, sophomores and juniors attended

relationships for eighth-graders during the 2016-17 school year, which will expand to provide sexuality education for the Middle School—something parents have specifically requested for several years, said Arnold.

SEVEN HILLS UPPER SCHOOL FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT

D

uring the 2016-17 school year—the second year of Seven Hills’ new and expanded four-year college counseling program—the department welcomed admission representatives from nearly 100 colleges to the Hillsdale Campus, expanded grade-level presentations for Upper School students, revised the content of our six evening parent meetings, and continued to publish timely newsletters for junior and senior families.

Seven Hills’ distinctive and intuitive college counseling department also took to the road last year, with our counselors visiting 25 colleges, where they talked with college and university admissions staff about their programs and our students.

Last year, the success of the Class of 2017 illustrated clearly the results of our students’ hard work, and of the department’s dedication. Students received merit scholarship awards from nearly 50 colleges, including several full-tuition scholarship offers. In addition, said college counselor Alex Catalan, seven students received National Merit scholarship awards, several students received National Merit-sponsored corporate scholarships, and one student was named a prestigious Questbridge National College Match Finalist for Yale.

levels,” said Catalan. “These results once again represent the remarkable academic talent of Seven Hills students and faculty.”

In a world where the average caseload for a high school college counselor is about 500:1, Seven Hills’ College Counseling department (four counselors for an Upper School student body of 350) offers a unique hands-on, individualized approach because of the shared vision within the department and the small counselor-to-student ratio, said college counselor Lara Magdzinski.

“With a student-counselor ratio as low as 17:1, we are able to afford each student a level of attention and assistance that is highly personalized and exceptionally

valuable,” said Magdzinski. “We are here to help extensively with every step of the process, including aspects such as course selection, summer planning, college list formation, application completion, essay writing, interview preparation, scholarship application, and final decision making.”

Director of College Counseling and Assistant Head of School Susan Marrs said the college counseling team of four brings a wide range of strengths and experience to the program.

“Collectively, we’ve worked in highly selective college admissions offices, we serve on local, state and national boards having to do with the college admissions process, and we enjoy excellent relationships with a host of admissions officers,” said Marrs. “With all that we do, however, we most enjoy working with kids and parents, guiding

them through this complicated process and helping them find the very best college matches. At the heart of the success of our program is building meaningful relationships with our students.”
