Dear Seven Hills family and friends, The end of the 2017-18 school year brought to a close one of the most productive periods in the history of our school community. Over the last five years, guided by our ambitious Strategic Plan of 2013, our superb faculty has implemented some critical enhancements to our educational program. As always, we have been motivated by our commitment to prepare our students, as fully as possible, for a complex and rapidly changing world.

The program changes focused on four critical areas: Global Awareness To prepare our students for a rapidly changing and increasingly interconnected global community, we have: • placed a greater global and contemporary emphasis in history and literature courses • offered new elective courses with global or contemporary emphasis, including Global Issues: Asia, Global Issues: Non-Asia, Environmental Science, Environmental History, Race and Society, Archaeology, and Entrepreneurship • added new world language options o aligning Lower School Spanish classes with stronger communicative emphasis o adding a bridge year in sixth-grade Spanish to retain Lower School skills and vocabulary o adding Middle and Upper Chinese • expanded travel/exchange programs to include: o the annual Downey China Program and biennial exchanges to Spain, France, Greece and Italy, and service learning trips STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) To foster an aptitude for using technology as a tool to address challenges and improve lives, we have: • introduced math enrichment and application strands in Lower School: o Lotspeich math enrichment program, Project Math o Doherty Creation Studio • added a design thinking curriculum to Middle School o Innovation Lab: sixth- and seventh-grade strands o New coding elective for eighth grade o Culminating eighth-grade science wind turbine project • expanded Upper School STEM electives, to include: o Engineering A: Civil, Mechanical, and Materials Engineering; Engineering B: Electrical, Biomedical, and Chemical Engineering; Biotechnology o Honors Statistics; AP Calculus AB o Computer Programming I and II (seven sections); Computer Engineering; AP Computer Science (two sections)

Guided Self-Discovery To help students identify and foster their unique talents and interests and to find a path to purpose, we have: • added more robust after-school enrichment programs • broadened the summer camp offerings • added instrumental music in grades 4 and 5 • expanded the Middle School advisory curriculum • introduced Four-Year College Counseling program • added advisory programming for grades 9-12 • launched our signature Experiential Learning Program, including: o coordinating service learning and Personal Challenge Program o more intentional leadership training o career exploration assemblies and job shadows o database of internships, travel, and enrichment programs o Concentrations program o May Term Experiential Learning Intensives Social and Emotional Learning To prepare students with the social and emotional skills to meet the challenges ahead with confidence and resilience, we have: • added key support and guidance personnel o four college counselors to implement a Four-Year College Counseling program o four school counselors to support a schoolwide developmental guidance program o seven learning specialists, aligned in a schoolwide learning support department • added more intentional programming in affective and interpersonal skills o Lower School, developmental guidance o Middle School, Second Step program for Social-Emotional Learning o Upper School, grade-level and advisory curriculum, college readiness skills We take great pride in the progress we have made on so many fronts over these last five years.

We are blessed with a talented and deeply committed faculty and staff, whose tireless efforts have done so much to enhance our students’ learning.

Dear friends, As Chair of the Board of Trustees, it is my privilege to thank the entire Seven Hills community for supporting the continuing evolution of this fine school. Your gifts to both The Seven Hills Annual Fund and the Build.Connect.Inspire. capital campaign have made a tremendous impact.

Over the last five years, the administration and faculty have implemented a host of improvements to our educational program. At the same time, the Board of Trustees has shepherded several momentous enhancements to the facilities on both campuses. Since 2013, the Board has raised and invested nearly $30 million to modernize classrooms, laboratories, instructional technology, playing fields and gymnasiums; and to build, in the coming year, the new Schiff Center and a new athletics field house.

Here is a brief overview of what we have achieved together.

Completed Facilities Projects (2013-18) 1. Lower Fields (October 2014) A magnificent athletic complex, with a hillside stadium, two turfed soccer/lacrosse fields, and a grass softball field.

2. The Nellie Leaman Taft Early Childhood Center (August 2015) A state-of-the-art classroom complex housing the Beginnings Parent and Toddler Enrichment Program, a new pre-kindergarten for 2-year-olds program, eight pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms, a large muscle room, and extensive outdoor learning spaces.

3. Doherty Renovations (2015-17) Two new outdoor playgrounds; extensive renovations to Jones Hall, including the library, science lab, Creation Studio, and all Unit I, II, and III classrooms; and to the cafeteria, gymnasium, and EcoGarden in and around Brooks Hall.

4. Tennis Court Relocation and Upgrade (Completed Spring 2018) Six new tennis courts, built adjacent to the Taft Early Childhood Center, replaced five courts on the south end of the Hillsdale Campus, which were demolished to provide the site for the new Schiff Center.

5. STEM Spaces (ongoing) Seven new laboratories have been created for Doherty’s Creation Studio, Lotspeich’s Project Math, the Middle School’s Innovation Lab, and new engineering and computer science courses in the Upper School.

Under Construction in 2018-19 1. The Schiff Center (May 2019) In June, we broke ground for a center for arts and leadership, which will be called The Schiff Center, in honor of former Board Chairs Jim and Beth Schiff and their family, who have done so much to advance this and so many other Seven Hills projects. This 35,000-square-foot facility, will house a 497-seat auditorium, as well as additional classroom, rehearsal, and performance spaces for our performing arts program in all four divisions. It will also create a magnificent venue for the planned extension of assembly programs, convocations, and special events so critical to building community.

2. Field House (August 2019) A new four-court field house will be built during 2018-19 on the north end of Hillsdale Campus, adjacent to the new tennis courts.

The new facility will allow teams to practice or play games simultaneously, getting our student athletes home much earlier. This new indoor facility will also be used extensively during the school day for physical education classes and in the shoulder seasons (late fall and early spring) when inclement weather would otherwise force cancellation of games and practices.

We are deeply grateful for all of those whose generosity and commitment have made all of this possible: our dedicated administration and Board of Trustees for their vision and leadership; our Facilities Committee, led so ably by John Silverman and Dan Schimberg, for bringing these projects in on time and on budget; and, of course, to our fundraising leaders and the hundreds of parents, alumni, and friends who helped bring those dreams to fruition.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS

22% FROM THE CLASS OF 2019 EARNED NATIONAL MERI T RECOGNITION

In May 2018, 155 students took 323 Advanced Placement exams in 19 subjects. 92% of them earned college-qualifying scores of 3 or higher. 77% of students scored 4’s and 5’s. 78 students were recognized as AP Scholars, scoring a 3 or above on at least three Advanced Placement exams. Eight of those students were National AP Scholars, with an average score of 4.59.

Average SAT scores for the Class of 2018 were among the highest in the region. The scores are as

follows: Verbal: 681; Math: 689; total 1370. 21% of students who took the SAT or SAT Subject Tests achieved at least one perfect subscore.

Average ACT scores for the Class of 2018 were among the highest in the region. The scores are as follows: English: 30; Math: 29; Reading: 30; Science: 30; Composite: 30. Of the students who took the ACT in the 2018 school year, 20% achieved at least one perfect subscore, receiving a 36 in English, Math, Reading, or

22% of the Class of 2019 earned National Merit recognition. Nine students from the graduating Class of 2018 were named National Merit Finalists.

Seven Hills students distinguished themselves in a host of academic competitions in the state of Ohio in 2017-18: Certamen (classics); the National Latin Exam; TechOlympics; 31st Annual Academic Competition in Mathematics; the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards; WCPO/ Scripps Regional Spelling Bee; and MATHCOUNTS, to name a few.

Natalie Choo ’18 was named a 2018 Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Presidential Scholars are selected on the basis of academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership, and service activities. Choo was one of 161 outstanding high school seniors

FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS

During the 2017-18 school year, 100% of students in the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools participated in fine and performing arts programs. In the Upper School, more than 80% of students elected to go beyond the 1.5 credit requirement for the arts, taking additional courses.

The performing arts faculty directed several productions and concerts. The Lower Schools staged two musicals and several musical programs on and off campus. The Middle School staged a musical and a play, and fall and spring instrumental and choral concerts. The Upper School performed a musical and two plays, as well as fall and spring instrumental and choral concerts. In fall 2017, the Upper School staged Thornton Wilder’s theatrical mainstay, Our Town.

The production won one Cappie, a national student-directed competition similar to the Tony Awards, and was nominated for several more.

Student Gabby Kominar ’20 was recognized for the show’s sound production.

The visual arts faculty hosted two Upper School art shows featuring student work. The art shows tell the story of the hard work and artistic vision of more than 100 students in the visual arts program. Special guest speaker Ben Glenn displayed his talent for chalk art at assemblies for Middle and Lower School students.

Seven Hills participated in major arts competitions throughout the school year,

including the Cappies, Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, and the Ohio Music Education Association. Our Middle and Upper School Students received prestigious recognition for their efforts. Middle Schoolers attended the Ohio Junior Thespian conference, earning Superior and Double Superior ratings. Upper School theater students competed in the Ohio Thespian Conference, garnering three Double Superior ratings and qualification for the international competition.

Upper School students had many opportunities to take their arts education above and beyond.

Choral students took part in the May Festival Chorus, an acclaimed group recognized nationally and internationally. Visual art students learned the fundamentals of DSLR

photography and photographing motion.

Middle and Upper School instrumentalists joined prestigious groups, including Cincinnati Junior Strings, All-State Orchestra, and

Founders Hall on the Hillsdale Campus and the Doherty cafeteria underwent extensive renovations in the summer of 2017, ready for student use at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year. Doherty’s gym was also renovated to include new bleachers and refinished floors.

In spring 2018, six tennis courts on the Hillsdale Campus were built thanks to the Build.Connect.Inspire. capital campaign. The six new courts were used by our teams for practice and matches during the spring 2018 season.

Because of Seven Hills families and friends’ generous support of the Build.Connect.Inspire. capital campaign, we began construction on The Schiff Center in June 2018. The Schiff Center, located at the south end of the Hillsdale Campus, will house a 497-seat auditorium, classrooms, practice space, and a green room. The building is scheduled to open in April 2019.

Violinist Andrew Yang ’21 advanced to the

last round of the Cincinnati Arts Association Overture Awards. Vocalist Natalie Choo ’18 won the finals of the Cincinnati Arts Association Overture Awards. She was also named a 2018 Presidential Scholar in the Arts, a significant honor given to select students around the country.

The 2018 Summer Program had a total enrollment of 432 children, ages 3 to 16. This program provides participants an opportunity to explore their interests and discover new ones over the course of the summer.

AFTER THE BELL After the Bell, which offers enrichment activities after school, had an increase in students. A total of 738 students on the Doherty and Hillsdale campuses in pre-kindergarten through Middle School participated in music lessons, enrichment programs, and Encore Club.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS Throughout the school year, our students took part in curriculum, assemblies, programs, community service projects, and travel opportunities that built upon the multifaceted, rich learning experiences synonymous with Seven Hills.

NEW COURSES AND PROGRAMS The Lower Schools piloted technology classes for fourth- and fifth-graders. Students learned how to navigate technology and software.

At Lotspeich, a formal makerspace was created in the Leyman Science Building. Students have access to materials to create and explore. Fifth-graders also took part in a digital citizenship program during library class. Students learned how to be responsible digital citizens and what that means for children their age. They learned how to use the internet responsibly through participating in discussions, acting out scripted skits, and asking thoughtful questions.

On the Doherty Campus, students in Unit II participated in Global Discoveries, an innovative program that blends science and social studies into one lesson. Students participated in hands-on activities that taught them about everything from glaciers to the Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest and their cultures. The Doherty Campus also piloted a program to build a robot prototype. In fall 2018, the campus launched a robotics and engineering program.

Middle School students participated in an inaugural Second Step program in fall 2017. Second Step is an advisory and guidance program that gives students the tools for emotion management.

Students participated in programs that reinforced the strong sense of community at Seven Hills: fundraisers benefiting the Cooperative for Education in the Lower Schools; Global Ed Day and Pumpkin Day in Middle; and May Term in Upper.

The weekly program teaches students how to foster healthy relationships in a way that reflects the values of social-emotional learning. Eighth-graders had the option to enroll in a coding class. Students in the course learned the fundamentals of computer programming as well as a variety of programming applications.

Schoolwide, lessons centered on global awareness played an important part in the 2017-18 school year, including: students on the Doherty Campus taking part in Cultural Connections Week; Lotspeich students learning about Diwali, Kwanzaa, and other holiday celebrations centered around lights; Middle Schoolers participating in the Hunger Banquet; and Upper School’s focus on guest speakers from many professional backgrounds and fields.

Upper School introduced May Term, a new frontier of experiences that were equal parts discovery, excitement, and curiosity. The weeklong program closed out the school year and allowed freshmen, sophomores, and juniors to take a deep dive into a field of interest. Upper School students took courses in everything from cake-baking to movie-making, to building furniture, and learning life skills such as cooking, washing clothes, and balancing checkbooks.

The intensives culminated with demonstrations throughout the Upper School and in Founders.

Our students explored the broader world through a number of experiential learning opportunities in the form of field trips to Dearborn, Michigan; Washington, D.C.; the Glen Helen Outdoor Education Center; the Otto M. Budig Theater for productions by the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company; and North Carolina’s Pisgah National Forest. Upper School students studied abroad in Italy and Greece and through our exchange programs in Spain and China.

ATHLETICS STUDENTS OF COLOR

ENROLLMENT

School opened in August 2017 with a total Lower School enrollment of 404 students, including pre-kindergarten for 2-year-olds through grade five, 247 Middle School students, and 351 Upper School students.

Students of color made up 34% of the school’s total enrollment in 2017-18.

Interest in the pre-kindergarten for 2-year-olds program and the kindergarten program surged on the Doherty and Hillsdale campuses. The Beginnings Parent and Toddler Enrichment program was also popular, with full enrollment for all sessions on both campuses.

80% of our students in grades one through 12 played on at least one competitive athletic team during the 2017-18 school year. In addition, 47 Upper School students were recognized as three-season athletes. 13 seniors were recognized as 12-season athletes, having played three seasons during each year of Upper School.

Schoolwide, Seven Hills fielded 98 teams in the 2017-18 school year—39 in the fall, 28 in the winter, and 31 in the spring.

Seven Hills won MVC championships in swimming, softball, and lacrosse throughout the 2017-18 school year.

In girls swimming, Lucy Callard ’18 claimed state titles in the 200 free and the 500 free. Emma Shuppert ’19 was named state runner-up in the 100 backstroke. In girls bowling, Audrey Wilson ’18 claimed a runner-up state championship in girls bowling.

Nine Seven Hills athletes were named MVC Players of the Year in softball, boys swimming, girls swimming, girls basketball, girls bowling, and boys basketball. Seven coaches were named MVC Coaches of the Year in girls basketball, boys swimming, boys bowling, girls bowling, boys tennis, boys lacrosse, and softball.

MVC SCHOLAR ATHLETES

276 student athletes were recognized as MVC Scholar Athletes. Varsity athletes are required to earn a GPA of 3.495 or higher to qualify.

Ten swimmers were named to the All-State team. Brice Hill ’19 and Maggie Kersting ’18 were named to All-City teams for boys basketball and girls basketball, respectively.

Tennis coach Tim Drew and baseball coach Randy Russell were named All-City Coaches of the Year.

Lucy Callard ’18 was named the Seven Hills Female Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row.

VISIONARY STEP toward preparing students even more fully for the increasingly competitive global landscape in PROGRAMS, FACILITIES, and METHODOLOGIES. In 2013, then-trustees Shannon Carter and Beth Schiff, along with the support of more than 100 volunteers shaped a blueprint for an inspiring future for Seven Hills with an ambitious stategic plan. The plan called for accelerating the curricular emphasis on project-based learning, increasing and sustaining enrollment throughout all divisions while maintaining traditional class sizes, sustaining the excellence of the faculty and staff, fostering real-world learning by strengthening career exploration, facilities improvements, and opportunity enhancements for students in the fine and performing arts and athletics.

Guided by the strength and inspired direction of the strategic plan, today, our Seven Hills academic, arts, and athletics programs and facilities are positioned to prepare our students for a much more pluralistic world, a much more global world, a technological world with a human focus, and a world more attuned to the needs of young people in emotionally challenging times. The 2013 Strategic Plan has led us here, pointing to avenues by which our students will gain real-world knowledge to navigate with confidence, curiosity, and purpose.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Financial Report 2017-18

The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity, and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this annual report.

The school maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which are designed to provide assurance to the school’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements.

The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the school, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee that includes engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented.

The school has again maintained a balanced budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the school, the administration, faculty, and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning.

Schoolwide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking student-faculty ratios, and removing under-enrolled programs.

The overall financial health of the school was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development, and distinctive programming and technology.

Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the school. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.

The Seven Hills School points with pride to the latest endowment report that places our invested assets over $36 million. The infusion of much-needed new gifts from our Critical Assets Campaign, combined with informed management by our endowment managers, and thoughtful leadership by the school’s Investment Committee, chaired in 2017-18 by James Shanahan, has returned our fund to a desirable trajectory.

PREPARING YOUNG LEARNERS

ive years ago, Seven Hills’ Board of Trustees sought to enhance the school’s advisory program in Middle School to provide opportunities to explore age-appropriate social and emotional issues and nurture self-advocacy and civic engagement.

The ability and insight to flex to the ever-changing social-emotional needs of students at one of the most vulnerable ages of their lives in real time is the direct result of the Board’s vision to evolve Seven Hills’ counseling program. A big step in that direction came in 2016, when Head of School Chris Garten created a formal counseling department and asked Lotspeich counselor Judy Arnold to take the helm.

Acting on their knowledge of the needs of Middle School-age children, Arnold and Middle School counselor Taylor Markovits began laying the groundwork for Second Step, a weekly program taught by all Middle School advisers, that encourages students to thrive in relationships using skills like grit, growth mindset, self-efficacy, social awareness, and self-management.

“We are giving students and teachers a framework of self-awareness and knowledge to help them feel more empowered to deal with overwhelming emotions and conflict resolution,” said Markovits. “We are sending our students the message—and our students are receiving it—that we care much more about them than just how they conduct themselves as students.”

Markovits’ sense to jump into action when real societal issues arise is part of a vision set in motion five years ago to foster the social-emotional health of Seven Hills students of all ages. From the newly formed department, our Lower School students are learning how to develop and maintain the life skill of mindfulness. Upper School class meeting time is now being used to focus on social-emotional health, as well as other life skills. In Middle, students are employing Second Step in natural applications.

An example of that application was Markovits’ and our students’ responses to this year’s high-profile #MeToo Movement that flooded news networks and social media across the globe. The lens with which the world saw sexual harassment and abuse, and gender equality changed. And all while that universal shift was taking place, one particular group of people instantly became the least knowledgeable but, at the same time, most curious about the movement and what it stands for—middle school-age students.

The open dialogue doesn’t just stop there, said Arnold. Having a counseling program that spans all grades and both campuses has also allowed Arnold, Markovits, and counselors Angie Bielecki and Vicky Hausberger to more intentionally coordinate services for students and families.

“Our targeted in-service programs coordinated by all Seven Hills counselors means that faculty and administrators have a common understanding of mental health

More opportunities for ongoing student-tostudent and student-to-teacher dialogue has increased student health and boosted confidence levels this past year. Seven Hills’ new counseling department introduced a human sexuality program, Healthy Visions, in the Middle School, for the first time during the 2017-18 school year, as well as created a foundation for more pertinent discussions among Upper School students.

In 2013, Seven Hills’ Board of Trustees drafted a Strategic Plan that called for many things, including “addressing significant facilities issues in areas where programmatic aspirations are constrained by current facilities.” Each retrofitting, renovation, repurposing, and construction project has been the direct result of intentional, prescribed planning to allow Seven Hills students the opportunity to learn, unhindered by lack of space and time.

tremendous growth across divisions and disciplines, from the school’s first step in 2014 to build the Lower Fields Athletic Complex on the Hillsdale Campus, to the latest groundbreaking over the summer of 2018 to build The Schiff Center, which will house a 497-seat auditorium, numerous practice rooms, and classrooms for musical and academic presentations. INSPIRED SPACE IN STEM In fall of 2014, the design of the Middle School’s Innovation Lab launched an ongoing spate of classroom retrofits and renovations for several makerspaces throughout our campuses, such as the Creation Studio on the Doherty Campus, the Project Math room in the Lotspeich building, and five other makerspaces throughout all grades.

As students and teachers continue to find new ways to use these innovative spaces, and with the importance of empathy driving much of their focus, STEM education and design thinking at Seven Hills is also very much about encouraging students to find ways to improve the lives of others.

On the Doherty Campus, the Creation Studio has inspired in our Lower School students everything from personal inventions to architectural solutions, to coding projects, and digital citizenship discussions.

In addition, students’ success with a pilot program to build a robot prototype during the 2017-18 school year has given rise to a robotics and engineering program, which launched this fall, said Hickenlooper.

Each fixture, 3-D printed by students, bears a label in English. For example, a sixth-grader printed out a small sink with the word “SINK” embossed on it. In May, Glum and her students presented the model to Sheryl Rajbhandari, founder and co-partner of The Welcome Project, a Cincinnati nonprofit organization that promotes empowerment for refugee women through art classes and other social events. While the students’ projects may vary each year, said Glum, the students will continue to work with a shared vision of using design thinking to help others for years to come.

GROWTH IN SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY STUDIES Since the 2013 launch of our five-year Strategic Plan, Seven Hills’ interpretation of computer science education has inspired the establishment of more sophisticated avenues of learning in the field, such as introduction to engineering classes, biotechnology, computer engineering classes in the Upper School, and a formal, mandatory design thinking course for seventh-graders.

For the first time in recent history, Seven Hills sent three computer science students to Barrington, Rhode Island, in May, to compete in the American Computer Science League’s All-Star Competition. The by-invitation international competition, featured teams from all over the United States, as well as top-notch teams from Romania, Croatia, British Columbia, and South Korea. The invitation is the product of Seven Hills’ response to a huge surge in interest in the hard sciences five years ago.

Computer science teacher Brian Arnold said the “Three E’s” sum up Seven Hills’ growing computer science culture. “It’s about the environment we learn in, the ecosystem the students are part of, and the encouragement the students receive in order to learn about the fundamentals of computer science,” said Arnold. “Computer science is in everything. We are trying to provide a broad base of knowledge for students so they can have a platform to advance in ways they are particularly interested.”

INSPIRED SPACE IN ATHLETICS

Beginning with Seven Hills’ 2013 Strategic Plan to nurture individual talents by enhancing opportunities in athletics, a number of facilities upgrades have been completed, matching the excellence of our championship-winning program.

For example, the extra space provided by the Lower Fields Athletic Complex has eased schedules for the dozens of student athletes in grades one through 12, and gotten them home much earlier after practices. Our newly refurbished track has allowed Seven Hills to host meets and has renewed interest in track among dozens more students. In addition, Lower School students on the Doherty Campus enjoy a renovated gym with electric bleachers, upgraded lighting, and refinished parquet floors. Our six new tennis courts recently finished on the north side of Hillsdale Campus allow more teams to play simultaneously. And, soon, a four-court field house, scheduled to be completed in summer 2019, will offer students enhanced facilities that consistently point to a thriving athletics program in which students have more opportunities to build a sense of community with their teammates and classmates.

Just as the collective, five-year facilities enhancements have served as a game-changer for Seven Hills athletics, across grades and campuses, our school’s vast, spirited community of student athletes continues to be fueled by that blend of support and pride to reflect the strength and spirit of our athletic program.

ver the years, Seven Hills’ fine and performing arts and academic programs have thrived despite cramped performance, presentation, and classroom space. Our Middle and Upper School students and faculty have worked creatively for years to navigate limited facilities, in order to achieve polished productions. And still, our robust program continued to thrive, buttressed by faculty expertise, enthusiastic students, and a supportive administration.

The June 2018 groundbreaking for The Schiff Center signifies a new beginning.

The Schiff Center, which will be comprised of a 497-seat auditorium for academic presentations and performances, rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, and a green room, will stand as the heart of our school, brought to life through the dreams, designs, support, and mindful dedication of a host of trustees, administrators, faculty, parents,

and community members. At the heart of the Seven Hills community, the 45,000-square-foot Center will serve as a forum for all.

In less than a year, The Schiff Center will provide our students access to facilities that inspire and experiences that will prepare them for the real world in the areas of fine and performing arts, presentational communications, convocations, awards ceremonies, student presentations, and an endless number of events.

Director of Development Margo Kirstein said Seven Hills’ facilities improvements reflect the thoughtful, strategic planning of the Board, the hard work and dedication of hundreds of donors to the capital campaign, and Seven Hills’ dedicated faculty and staff, who have built out all of these programs.

“The last five years have been ambitious, and a great deal has been accomplished,” said Kirstein. “We owe a debt of gratitude to everyone who has been so committed and has come together to get us to this much anticipated moment.”

ver the past five years, the world has become much smaller at Seven Hills.

Seven Hills’ humanities offerings are just as vast as the world they encompass. Students have access to recent additions in literature courses and history classes—such as our new, semester-long environmental history and biotechnology classes. Seven Hills’ English and history departments are also working together to create a rich experience for ninth-graders studying Ancient Greece and other units. Fifth-graders on the Hillsdale Campus participate in an integrated unit of social studies, science, and Project Math to learn more about the realities of global water access. On the Doherty Campus, Unit II students are blending social studies and science in their new global discoveries unit.

Seven Hills students also enjoyed a broader infusion of world language courses, including adding a robust Mandarin Chinese language program to the existing Spanish, French, and Latin courses. Seven Hills also offers trips on a rotating basis to five different countries.

In her Chinese classes, teacher Mia Wu teaches Mandarin not only as a language, but as a vehicle to help her students better understand the social and political climate of China. “Being familiar with the language of

any country is just a small part of being globally aware,” said Wu. “Every day, world language students are gaining greater awareness of a bigger picture, and therefore, more attuned to our world’s realities.”

“The students have been able to look at history from another direction,” said Wabler. “They’re learning different ways to understand history, as well as people’s relationship with nature.”

In fall 2016, U.S. History teacher Brian Wabler unveiled a newly designed environmental history course, in which juniors and seniors take a closer look at the story of nature, how each environment tells its own narrative, and how it upsets and upturns various cultures. The course will continue to evolve this fall, as environmental history and environmental science will combine to be a year-long, interdisciplinary environmental studies class.

More and more, over the past five years, Seven Hills teachers continue to thoughtfully develop curriculum and learning experiences that offer many lenses through which our students see things, learn, and take in information.

Our students are reaching beyond our borders to understand historic and current events taking place abroad, and how these events affect their daily lives.

Complementary to the college counseling journey, Seven Hills’ four-year-old Experiential Learning program helps students understand who they are, where their strengths lie, and what they might

This healthy, dynamic blend of fostering students’ individualized self-awareness, along with their personalized pursuit of excellence manifests in organic and intentional ways. Seven Hills’ Four-Year College Counseling program pairs students with one of four college counselors who work alongside them, from their first few weeks of Upper School through the college application process in their junior and senior years. During their freshman year, students are learning to navigate the rhythm and flow of ninth-grade life, and as sophomores they will focus on extracurricular opportunities. Juniors learn to balance their responsibilities and explore college options, and seniors recognize the many lessons they have learned, applying their knowledge to what’s ahead.

ive years ago, faculty, administration, and members of the Board of Trustees knew the Upper School students of the 2020 era would navigate greater complexities than anyone their young age had ever before faced. As part of the Strategic Plan, this visionary group set out to create programs that would help students to build academic footholds to excellence, learn about themselves and what they love, and develop skills to be able to thrive socially and emotionally through adversity, as well as success.

Over the past four years, Director of Experiential Learning Nick Francis’ burgeoning Experiential Learning program has included an entrepreneurship class that culminates in a Shark Tank-style competition after students work with local business executives. It has led some to online courses, exchange programs, and summer internships tailored to their interests. Others pursued Concentrations in one of several interest areas, such as global citizenship, technology, the arts, entrepreneurship, environmental stewardship, or political engagement. The program has also sparked continuous introspection, as students interact with the real world and meet a number of professionals from varying backgrounds in Upper School assemblies throughout the year.

“We are helping students to be aware of and nurture the emotional aspects of their lives” Francis said. “We’re helping guide them toward exploration and ultimately helping them achieve a sense of purpose.”
