In the case of drone delivery, there are two main benefits: a decrease in delivery time (something Amazon likes to refer to as “rapid parcel delivery”) and a decrease in human labor and ground delivery costs. While still in testing, Amazon Prime Air is “designed to safely get packages to customers in 30 minutes or less,” shipping directly from warehouse to door and bypassing street traffic that delivery trucks have to navigate. Moreover, by using “sense and avoid” technology, Prime Air drones can safely operate beyond 10 miles from their origin on their own, negating the cost for a delivery driver to actually get the package to the customer on the other end.

THESE TESTS HOWEVER haven’t been without their hiccups: aside from questions about shared airspace between UAVs and larger craft such as commercial and passenger planes, delivery drones are being scrutinized by comparison to their traditional wheeled delivery truck counterparts. For example, a single delivery truck can carry multiple parcels and multiple customers and remain in the field longer to deliver them, while current drone designs only support light parcel loads and require pickups after each drop-off.

DRONES ARE THE FUTURE With all the crazy technology out there, it seems as if we’re living in a time of science fiction. From hoverboards to smartphones that allow us to carry a world’s wealth of knowledge in our pockets, there’s no shortage of imagination and innovation in the realm of technology. But if there’s one machine you should get familiar with, it’d be none other than those four-armed flying things in the sky: that’s right, I’m talking about drones.

Also referred to as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or simply unmanned aircraft (UAs), drones are rapidly becoming mankind’s best friend, being employed in more ways than you can shake a stick at. Outside of their original military applications (dating all the way back to the mid-1800s when the Austrian Empire bombed Venice with unmanned, ordinance-filled balloons), PAK'R MAGAZINE | 06

the past few decades have seen drones fill a variety of roles from aerial photography and information gathering, researching inaccessible or hard-toreach areas, and delivering goods and equipment quickly over short distances Despite this long history, drones used for commercial delivery only started gaining attention around 2013 when Germany’s Deutsche Post AG subsidiary DHL conducted tests on delivering small shipments of medicine and food to remote areas. The same year, Amazon announced its own intentions to build an air delivery program (now called Prime Air) amid initial skepticism. While it does have its detractors, drone application has only increased since -and with some of the benefits, they bring, this trend doesn’t look like it’ll be slowing down anytime soon.

Delivery companies and their researchers remain optimistic in that, if not finding more efficient ways to use current drone designs to deliver packages, heavier duty drone designs that can carry larger or multiple packages are also in the works, most notably by Google X’s Project Wing initiative that’s been openly tested since August 2014. Criticism aside, things are still looking bright for these UAVs. ARK Invest analyst Tasha Keeney suggested last year that drone delivery might actually be a sound investment in Amazon’s case, actually providing a profit from overall low delivery costs in comparison to other available methods: “Customers will enjoy low cost and convenience, while Amazon stands to make a considerable profit. At $1 per package, Amazon’s internal rate of return on its UAV investments should exceed 50%. Because delivery of a five pound package will cost $0.88, the margin will allow Amazon to break even after the first year, [...] achievable even with estimates for infrastructure, drone investment, and operating expenses, which are primarily labor driven.”

AMAZON, GOOGLE AND DHL aren’t the only ones hopping on the drone delivery trend either. Aside from getting medical supplies to inaccessible areas, a Dutch student developed a prototype UAV to quickly deploy emergency medical equipment such as heart defibrillators while a paramedic-operator can instruct those helping the victim from a remote location. Conversely, a British franchise of Domino’s has been experimenting with a “Domicopter” concept to bypass ground traffic and deliver delicious pizza directly to their customers. Whether or not the drones that fight heart attacks try to get in a fight with the ones that might encourage them remains to be seen.

As for the outlook on delivery drones, it’s safe to say they’re going to be around for quite some time. Though delivery companies aren’t the only ones taking advantage. One major concern in the United States has been the use of drones to smuggle drugs and contraband beyond international borders. To combat this, the Federal Aviation Administration (or FAA) has passed an interim rule that came into effect last December outlining registration requirements for all owners of drones weighing between 250 grams and 55 pounds. Failure to comply puts owners at risk of being charged with civil penalties up to $27,500 and criminal penalties of up to $250,000 as well as up to three years in prison. But have no fear: as technology evolves and our understanding and appreciation for drones and all of their applications improves, pioneering companies like Amazon and Google have been working with regulators to find solutions that best suit everyone’s interests. Just how that’ll come about… well… only time will tell.

AS SUPPLY CHAIN DIGEST DEFINES IT Distributed order management is "a commerce engine that provides a central solution for managing the information, executing the process, and monitoring to ensure customer orders are fulfilled accurately and cost-efficiently across a complex network of source and fulfillment systems and processes, as well as suppliers." In other words, it's a logistics model that unifies the process across the board between wholesalers, the retailers they do business with, and finally passing on those efficiencies to the customer.

Traditional order management, by contrast, lacks this picture of unity; a retailer has their inventory numbers, a wholesaler theirs, and both sides only exchange what information they feel is necessary.

Before the digitalization of business and cloud-based computer networks, this system had its place and worked well enough.

In anticipation of sales or heightened demand, store inventory managers would have to buy more stock in preparation for the rush. A lot of estimates and guesswork are involved, based on trends from past sales.

If you still managed to sell out though, tough; you're out of luck.

But that no longer has to be the case.

As computers and networks are built within the web of the Internet of Things, information visibility has become the norm.

We live in a time where virtually 90 percent of the world's data has been produced in the past two years alone. Numbers, information, and multimedia are commodities now with monetary value (this post included). With the current trend (not to mention convenience, speed, and accessibility that comes with it), those who fail to adapt will be buried under all those gigabytes.

So how does distributed order management keep you and other businesses from meeting a similar fate?

Despite apprehension about sharing inventory numbers and data privacy surrounding those figures, distributed order management offers distinct advantages in exchange for a bit of faith with your suppliers.

BY CONNECTING WITH YOUR 3RD PARTY distributors and granting them access to your inventory numbers, your suppliers can better serve you knowing you need more (or have too much) of something and can react accordingly. All this without you needing to count each product and report back to each distributor manually; no more guesswork, no more hoping your suppliers can cover you during peak seasons.

WITH DISTRIBUTED ORDER MANAGEMENT suppliers can proactively help businesses in a bind with this method. Some might already know this principle as vendor-inventory management.

In addition to increased inventory protections for both supplier and retailer (that is, the retailer won't run out of stock, and the supplier can make sure they have enough stock to then cover the retail shortage), distributed order management also affects customer satisfaction. Earlier this summer, the pet supply retailer and its subsidiary web domains announced the further implementation of DOM technology to better reach their customers: OMS, which PetSmart will be debuting later this fall, will "ensure PetSmart has a comprehensive, fullpicture view of product inventory" throughout their stores, warehouses, and distribution centers. This, in turn, opens new doors for customers like custom, subscription-based delivery services. After all, Fido needs food regularly too, not just on the first day you brought him home.

"[PetSmart's] digital presence and omnichannel strategy has become a key focus as it looks to better serve its customers and adapt to new shopping behaviors. The selection of Manhattan's [Enterprise Order Management Solution (or OMS)] is part of a large strategic initiative by PetSmart to significantly enhance PetSmart's omni and digital capabilities and to enhance the company's additional ecommerce businesses."

PAPER OR PLASTIC: WHICH IS THE GREENER OPTION?

While plastic has been demonized for its damaging effect on the environment, most people feel more comfortable with paper-based products like paper bags and cardboard. When one weighs out all the factors that go into the manufacturing, use, and recycling of both materials, however, paper isn't as green an option as people think.

Don't get me wrong: plastics waste is a huge problem that needs to be reined in if we're to preserve the planet we live on. As we said before, however, a lot of the problem can be solved with how we use this valuable material. In more simple terms, we just need to reevaluate how we produce, use, and recycle plastic packaging. The same could be said about paper which, arguably, is just as destructive to the environment in its own way.

SURE, PAPER PRODUCTS, AND CARDBOARD ARE MADE FROM TREES AND THUS, CONSIDERED A "GREENER" MATERIAL ON ITS OWN Just because the end product might seem more eco-friendly does not automatically imply that the process of making it is. In fact, paper production causes 70 percent more air pollution than the production of plastic bags while also contributing 80 percent more greenhouse gasses. And when it comes to resource use, paper bag production uses three times more water and four times as much energy than creating new plastic bags; even recycling paper bags is worse by consuming more fuel than just creating new ones. Indeed, making new paper bags produces 80 percent more solid waste than their plastic counterparts.

Though paper coming from trees might seem like a good thing on the surface (you know, trees and organic materials are "green"), paper production is a leading contributor to deforestation.

When it comes to fighting our rising atmospheric carbon dioxide count, we kind of need trees to reabsorb some of that CO2 and process it back into oxygen.

So which material is better? As Rob Kaszubowski, CPP, a Senior Packaging Engineer at Chainalytics put it:

THE SHORT ANSWER IS EASY: NEITHER! "Paper and plastic bags each have different components that make them a drain on natural resources and a strain on the environment. When it really comes down to it, each option has its pros and cons. [...] Both materials are recyclable, but the rate that consumers recycle them is minimal at best. Paper is degradable, whereas plastics take over 1,000 years to decompose. Yet, plastic bags require less energy to produce and recycle. The list goes on and on and teeters back and forth without really steering you to truly believe on is greater than the other."

However, don't despair. While current technology and consumer trends are largely to blame for our waste problems, changes that emphasize better trade, buying, and reuse practices can start making a big difference in the battle for sustainability.

Lowering Your Carbon Footprint...

With Plastic?

Though the same could be said about changes to the paper production and recycling process, since we're experts on plastics here at FP, we figured we'd stick to talking about what we're good at.

Indeed, we're committed to finding more eco-friendly variants of plastic packaging, namely with our line of green biodegradable films. Luckily, we're not alone in the fight for a greener, less wasteful future.

Riverford Organics of the United Kingdom, for example, has shifted gears from paper to plastic delivery boxes which, as company spokesman Guy Watson claims, could lower their company's carbon footprint by 70 percent.

"Householders continue to see plastic as wicked and paper-based goods as benign.

But when considered over the entire life of the packaging, paper and cardboard embody far more greenhouse gasses than their plastic equivalents. Paper products take substantial amounts of energy to make. Crushing a tree down into small fibers, mixing the wood pulp into a slurry, and then passing the wet mass through huge rollers cannot be done without the use of enormous quantities of power. Making paper and cardboard is almost certainly the third largest industrial use of energy on the planet. By contrast, plastic is light, durable, and its manufacture is generally not particularly energy intensive -- at least by comparison to paper."

IN AN INTERVIEW WITH THE GUARDIAN, WATSON EXPLAINS THE CHANGE IN THINKING:

WHILE THE PROCESS OF PRODUCING PAPER AND CARDBOARD IS, INDEED, VERY ENERGY AND RESOURCE INTENSIVE, Riverford's goal was to at least keep its cardboard boxes out of landfills, offering refill and recycling services to its customers after delivery. Though the boxes were intended for use in ten delivery cycles before finally being retired, they usually lasted about four rounds before they fell apart. As Watson noted, "[since] these boxes are 'free,' the householder doesn't look after them properly," so the condition of the container deteriorated much more rapidly than expected.

"It is the customer who is stopping [Riverford from] using long-lasting plastic for any form of packaging, not economics or carbon accounting," as The Guardian article asserts.

Since it's widely known that plastic, by comparison, doesn't rot and is much more sturdy and water- and air-proof than cardboard, using plastic delivery boxes instead seemed like the wiser choice.

Roughly 85 percent of Riverford's packaging is made up of paper-based products though most negative comments on the company's packaging refer to its plastics which only contribute about 8 percent to its carbon footprint.

Indeed, sustainable packaging innovation will continue to solve this problem, but if we are truly to overcome the waste flooding our landfills and oceans, this effort must come from all sides of the economic spectrum: from business leaders and distributors to the consumers at home and the recycling plants. It isn't that paper or plastic are particularly damning our environment. It is, however, our rampant and wanton misuse and waste of these materials that not only drains natural resources but replaces them with literal garbage.

Now, it's important to note that the consumer isn't the sole source of blame for inefficient materials use. While the lack of proper recycling and efficiency education plays a large role, again a major contributor to our waste problem is pretty straightforward: we need to keep these materials out of landfills, at least for as long as possible. Therefore, it is imperative to find substitute materials that can either be reused (like sturdy reusable shopping bags you can take with you on your grocery outings) or have a lesser environmental impact (such as biodegradable or organic-based films) than current methods.

I don't know about you, but I much prefer living in a world that isn't filled with trash.

CAN YOU SHOOT DOWN PESKY TRESPASSING DRONES?

Many find civil drone technology exciting and innovative, but there are plenty of people who are more annoyed than impressed. With nosy neighbors taking their camera-equipped drones out for a flight around the cul-de-sac, some worry about the invasion of their privacy and personal space. Some people have even taken it upon themselves to shoot down trespassing drones like $1,500 clay pigeons. Before you dust off the ol' shotgun, however, let's talk about how to properly handle intrusive drones without the use of firearms.

Make no mistake: with the rapid rise of drones and their recent introduction into civil applications, we live in a time of science fiction come to life. From medical emergency and disaster response to surveying and scientific observation, from pizza and product delivery to streaming sporting events and parties from a bird's eye view, there's no shortage of tasks for these modern marvels. Of course, with everything that's good, there's a little bit of bad thrown in the mix.

Aside from their roots as military equipment DRONES HAVE ALSO BEEN USED FOR LESS SAVORY ACTIVITIES SUCH AS DRUG TRAFFICKING AND OBSTRUCTING RESCUE WORKERS , AMONG OTHER THINGS .

But even people who use recreational drones innocently--that is, without the intent to cause harm--they still have a habit of getting in the way.

These flying robots come with a slew of legal questions that need answers. With the FAA regulating drones alongside helicopters, planes, and other aircraft, where does their jurisdiction begin and end? Private property rights have always defined two dimensions, but what about the airspace above the lot line? What's a reasonable response to a strange UAV hovering outside your window?

PLENTY OF DRONES ARE STILL USED AS WEAPONS after all, often with civilian casualties. To some, regardless of proper civilian use, this technology is merely a remote-controlled camera or weapon; it's only a matter of time before worse things happen.

While we tend to believe that more good than bad will come from this new tech, legislation still hasn't caught up to help prevent improper use.

But what can be done about trespassing drones now?

ONE MAN ' S DEFENSE IS ANOTHER ' S CRIMINAL MISCHIEF As some citizens take matters into their own hands, the outcome in how courts handle these cases is a toss-up. In 2014, a New Jersey man shot down his neighbor's drone with a shotgun as it hovered around his property. The neighbor claimed to be taking pictures of a friend's house that was still under construction, only to have his drone peppered with shotgun pellets. The shooter was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and criminal mischief; the shotgun used in the act was seized by the local police and the shooter posted bail. While the case dealt mostly with the man firing off a shotgun in a populated area, whether or not the drone's flyby was illegal was still left up in the air.

The man was arrested for firstdegree endangerment and criminal mischief. Unlike the New Jersey man of yesteryear, however, the judge cleared the rancher of all charges, asserting he had a right to shoot the drone down:

As far as defending your home from robot invaders goes, a successful legal defense is grounded in reasonable response.

Unfortunately, there's no consistent definition for that just yet.

I THINK IT'S CREDIBLE TESTIMONY THAT HIS DRONE WAS HOVERING FROM ANYWHERE, FOR TWO OR THREE TIMES OVER THESE PEOPLE'S PROPERTY, THAT IT WAS AN INVASION OF THEIR PRIVACY AND THAT THEY HAD THE RIGHT TO SHOOT THIS DRONE.

Redefining Personal Space

IF PROPERTY LAW WASN ' T COMPLICATED ENOUGH , THROWING THE RIGHT TO PRIVACY AND AIRSPACE SOVEREIGNTY IN THE MIX DOESN ' T MAKE FINDING SOLUTIONS ANY EASIER .

As the FAA claims jurisdiction of all airspace above ground, regulating drones like other aircraft, it's challenged the fundamental understanding of property rights: "According to the Federal Aviation Administration, every inch above the tip of your grass blades is the government's jurisdiction. 'The FAA is responsible for the safety and management of U.S. airspace from the ground up,' said an agency spokesman... But common law long held that landowners' rights went 'all the way to Heaven.' And today, it's clear that they have some rights."

THIS COMMON LAW is derived from 16th century England as cuius est solum, eius est usque ad coelum et ad inferos (whoever's is the soil, it is theirs all the way to Heaven and all the way to hell). Otherwise known as the ad coelum doctrine, this principle protected mineral and oil rights found in the ground under private property.

Other drone opponents use the Fourth Amendment, arguing that "excessive drone use to monitor regular civilians without 'probable cause' is a violation of freedoms and civil rights."

Others still call on the 1946 case of United States v. Causby which set the precedent for two major principles regarding airspace below the minimum safe altitude (or MSA) for aircraft to fly over buildings and people: property owners have "exclusive control of the immediate reaches of the enveloping atmosphere;" and they own as much of the air above their as they can "occupy or use in connection with the land."

Despite these long-upheld cases, however, drone defenders argue that none of them really pertain to drones. Causby was specific to property damage associated with being so close to a military airfield whose planes flew a lot lower to the ground than modern aircraft; the use of the Fourth Amendment as a defense is weak at best as 'probable cause' usually only refers to law enforcement and warrants; and ye olde English judges of the 1500s had nary a clue what air traffic was, save unladen European swallows.

But what if you're less annoyed and more threatened by a random UAV zipping around your house? If the preferred response is to let law enforcement handle trespassing drones, where does that leave

At the Federal level, Congress is currently working on a bill to further regulate recreational drone use. Of course, how long that'll take is anyone's guess. While we're waiting for the government to help create standards for civilian UAVs, the changes we need could come from simple changes in behavior. If you own a drone, don't be obnoxious with it, bother others, or disturb their privacy. On the other hand, don't be so quick to take pot shots at the neighbor kid's latest Christmas present. As always, reason prevails. It's just going to take some time to get everyone on the same page.
