This is a time to come together to encourage each other, pray for our children, staff, parents and reflect on the many blessings we are grateful for.

Erg Rowing Champions!

Congratulations to all our Erg Rowers on such a successful fundraising Sunday. Led by our Social Justice Prefects and Senior School House Captains, our goal was to raise $10,000, but the students raised $11,138! This money will be used to support victims in the Ukraine, people affected by the floods, and the remainder will go to the Hope Care Café in Kelso.

Students rowed a combined distance of over 765 kilometres. This was a mighty effort, and we are so proud of all those who got behind the project. These funds will make a real difference in assisting others in need at this time.

Literature Festival What a blast!

Our Year 3-11 students attended presentations by visiting authors, participated in writing workshops, and learnt how to improve the gathering of ideas, planning, structuring, revision and completion of a story.

Authors: Gus Gordon, Belinda Murrell, John Larkin, Anna Fienberg and Lesley Gibbes, participated in the Festival this week, and many students took the time to personally meet the authors, discuss their own writing as young people, ask questions and seek advice on how they can develop as writers – a very valuable, real-world skill!

Good Luck at the RAS Once again, the students in our Cattle Team will head off to the Royal Agricultural Show in Sydney next week. A large team of 25 students and 29 Limousin and Angus cows will be on display throughout the week. Our Cattle Team students have been dedicated and hardworking in preparing for the show, working and prepping the cattle over the past months. Thanks again to Mrs Dawes for her leadership and passion for this event, and best of luck to all the students.

Easter Services Across the Junior and Senior Schools, our Easter Services are planned for next week. For Senior students, these will be conducted through our regular Chapel times, and our Junior School will be held on Thursday, 7 April 2022 with of course, the traditional Easter Hat parade.

Rowing from Bathurst to Lismore!

Most of you are aware that the senior House Captains led their various Houses in the 12 Hour Rowing Ergometer Challenge last Sunday. Each House was allocated a rowing machine, and they rowed from 6:00 am in the morning to 6:00 pm at night. The event was held to raise money for the NSW flood victims, for displaced Ukrainian families, and to raise money for meals that our students serve at Hope Care Café. Participating rowers were sponsored by their families, and we also received donations from the school community. Our ambitious target was $10,000 to be distributed to the various charities.

The event was a great success, with $11,138 raised for needy families! The House break-down of funds raised was: -

Dunlop - $1,290

Mawson - $1,662

Cuthbert - $2,061

Booth - $2,390

Cowan - $3,735

Cowan won with 157.7km

Followed by Mawson 157km, only 700m behind.

Then Booth, 155.5km

And finally, Cuthbert, 144km.

Let me finish this article with a ‘fun fact’. If we drew a straight line between here and Lismore, the distance is 622km or to Brisbane is 740km. The students together on the day rowed 765km. They ‘metaphorically’ rowed our flood donation to those most in need.

Well done to the House Captains – you all demonstrated amazing leadership and commitment, and you have the blisters and soreness to prove it!

Well done to all the students and staff who supported this event. Finally, a BIG thank you to all those who gave money and meat for the barbecue so that our goal could be met, but more importantly, you are an amazing blessing to those who have found themselves in difficult times. Amen.

The money was distributed to the various charities according to the donors' wishes, with $2,950 to support victims in the Ukraine, $3,038 to support people whose lives have been affected by the floods, and $5,150 to support the meals in the Hope Care Café.

2023 Class Structure for Year 3 I am pleased to announce that the College Executive has confirmed that we will have two Year 3 classes in 2023. Our current Year 2 is single streamed, but due to strong interest for 2023, we have made the decision to have two streams in Year 3 next year.

This will provide us with the opportunity to grow and also make the class sizes smaller.

Winter Uniform At the start of Term 2, we change to the Winter school uniform. Students will still need to bring in their bucket hat to wear at recess, lunch and sport when it is sunny.

Students will still be allowed to wear their PE uniform to and from school on the days they have PE lessons or Active Afternoons. Please see the Junior School Campus Handbook on our website for details of Winter Uniform requirements.

Easter Service and Easter Hat Parade On Thursday, 7 April at 2:00 pm, all Junior School students will participate in a special Easter Service on the Chapel Lawn. Straight after the service, all parents of our Preparatory School students and Infants students (Kindergarten to Year 2) are invited to watch the annual Easter Hat Parade. The students will parade around the soccer field in the Infant's playground. Our Year 3 to 6 students will also be there cheering on the children with the Easter Hats.

STEAM and Innovation Our Innovation Centre is unique to our school and is the perfect place for students to experience and develop their confidence in STEAM as they collaborate, calculate risks, solve problems and develop their curiosity and imagination. This term, our more senior year groups have engaged in real-life projects whilst simultaneously developing their Information and Computer Technology capability.

Given it’s my last The Roar article for the term, I thought I’d give you a little snapshot of what students have been doing in this fantastic new learning space.

Stage 2 Camp As The Roar goes live this week, Stage 2 students will be setting up camp at Taronga Zoo for the night. The camp is one of the highlights of the year and is a great first night away from home for many of our Year 3 students.

Year 6 have built a prototype for a device that could be used to detect and warn people against a natural disaster such as a volcano. Students have been introduced to Glogster; a multi-media interactive poster where students combine images, graphics, audio, video and text on the one digital canvas.

Year 5 have been looking at how drones can be used to assist in natural disasters. Students learnt about drone safety, manual and programmed flight before testing their skills. More recently, they’ve been exploring GIS to analyse areas affected by the 20192020 bushfires.

Year 4 have been building prototypes of vehicles to explore the surface of the moon and creating their own Google Slideshow to explore the history of moon exploration and vehicles in space.

Year 3 have been getting their hands dirty, creating papier mâché models of local landforms as they learn more about erosion and explore ideas to minimise erosion.

Recently Year 2 began exploring the phases of the moon, which they’ve been learning about in Science and have been using ICT to investigate, create and demonstrate their knowledge.

Year 1 have been exploring early engineering concepts, including the effects of gearing and balanced and unbalanced forces on the movement of an object.

Students constructed a launcher for a spinning top and developed their own ideas to improve their initial designs.

Kindergarten have had lots of fun moving from Investigators where they develop their curiosity and imagination to building an amusement park with our STEM Park Lego kits to learn how to code with our Bee bots.

Literature Festival Our annual Literature Festival has been a resounding success once again. All Junior School students have engaged in a range of activities led by prominent authors

and illustrators, including Belinda Murrell, Lesley Gibbes, Anna Fienberg and Gus Gorton. Here’s a little account of what our classes have been up to: On Monday, Kindergarten enjoyed meeting Belinda Murrell and Lesley Gibbes. We were intrigued to learn about the inspiration behind Belinda’s stories and how her love of reading has transpired to her children. Kindergarten listened to Lesley read Dinosaur Dads and Fluke. Lesley shared her puppets whilst playing ‘What Am I’ games. Ms Murray Lesley Gibbes presented to Year 1 about her novel series “Fizz the Detective Dog” and "Fluke". She explained her inspiration for both these books were her personal experiences. The children loved hearing about her “What if…” questions and got into character. Year 1 was also lucky to see Belinda Murrell,who is the author of the ‘Lulu Bell’ and ‘Pippa’s Island’ series. When working with Anna Fienberg, Year 3 discussed the merits of keeping writing journals to record important events in their lives, how they were feeling at the time and who was involved. These journals are then a highly useful tool for an adult author of children’s book to draw on. Mrs Inglis Anna Fienberg captivated Year 4 with her stories of her mischievous cavalier and his taste for tissues and shared an insight into her mother’s dream that resulted in the birth of her character, Tashi, who she is so well known for. Belinda Murrell gave us a wonderful insight into the inspiration for the 27 books she has written so far, including her interesting and quirky pets to her marvellous travels around the world. Mrs Willis Gus Gordon took Year 6 on a journey of how he came to be an author and illustrator. They saw pictures of Gus’ studio and heard about the sources of his artist and creative inspiration. The session finished with some engaging instruction on drawing using basic shapes and techniques to convey emotion. Mrs Nicholls

Lego Education Spike Prime Challenge On Tuesday, I led a meeting of students in Years 4, 5 and 6 who are passionate and interested in robotics.

I’m encouraging these students to form a team and join in the 2022 Spike Prime Lego Challenge. The challenge will involve students developing and building a new vehicle for taking people on a journey.

In addition to building a prototype, students will also need to document their research, designs and programs, create a presentation and short video about their creation. NAPLAN Practice Test Update Our NAPLAN schedule for 2022 continued last week with practice tests. While not all of our practice test sessions were a ‘raging success’, they were very useful in identifying issues we may face with the real NAPLAN tests in Term 2 and problem-solving.

We did have a large number of students absent due to illness and isolation requirements. Unfortunately, doing mass practice sessions will not be given to catch up. However, students and parents can also access the public demonstration site to complete some simulation of the tests. This can be done at https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/publicdemonstration-site Some essential components of the online NAPLAN tests we require from the Year 7 and 9 students during the test window, 10-20 May are: 1) Fully charged laptops at the start of the day and power supplies to charge the device during the day, and 2) Headphones or Headsets or Earbuds – these must be in working order and brought to school for all students as they will be required to listen during the tests.

Police Youth Engagement Officer Last week, we had a visit from Constable Jane to our Year 7/8 Assembly. It was great to welcome her back onto the campus after a few years of not being able

to with COVID. Her presentation to the students follows on nicely with the Child Safety Handbook link that was written about in my last column for The Roar. Constable Jane spoke to the students about the legality and responsibility of young people with cyber technology. Her message was very clear and understood by the students. We look forward to her coming back to the campus next term to address the Year 9 to 12 students.

Try Day for 2023 Year 7 Our campus was a hive of activity last Tuesday, 22 March, for the Year 7 2023 Try Day. The breakfast and school tours with many of the parents were a great success, and it was wonderful to be able to welcome parents back onto the campus. The students (over 100 of them) had a full day of activities where they interacted with some of the teaching staff, the Team Leaders and some of our potential Year 11 leaders. The day would not have been a success without the support of many academic, administrative, support and maintenance staff. continued page 9

Winter Uniform in Term 2 A reminder is given to students and parents that upon returning to school in Term 2, students will be required to wear the WINTER UNIFORM. It will be time to put away the summer dresses and grey shorts and time to come to school in trousers or kilts, wool pullovers, blazers, winter coats, SASC track pants and soft shell jackets. Students are strongly encouraged to have all of their uniform items labelled and to utilize their lockers to safely secure their belongings. A reminder that NO uniform items from the previous schools are permitted. They were phased out at the end of 2020.

(Students wearing such items will be asked to remove them – this includes winter coats or Kooga’s, old rugby shorts/jerseys and hoodies).

Bathurst ANZAC Day Service and March All SASC Senior School students in Bathurst and surrounds are encouraged to attend and support the ANZAC Day services and march on Monday, 25 April.

Our Pipes and Drums will be performing and leading the march. The meeting place for the march is the RSL (Rankin St) from 9:50 am with the ‘step off’ from 10:15 am. The ANZAC service will then be held at the Carillion facing George Street. Students marching are asked to wear the winter school uniform including blazers and hats.

Easter Break Approaching Soon The Easter break is just around the corner. As we approach the end of Term 1, we encourage students to finish strong and work to the best of their ability in every task and every lesson right to the final bell.

When the break does come, we strongly encourage our students and families to take some time to rest and recover and to reflect on the life of Jesus over the Easter weekend. Be safe, be healthy, be good.

SASC Basketballers win big A huge congrats to our SASC Pumas, who won their Grand Final last night with a crushing 35 – 19 victory.

The Pumas consist of Charlotte Bennett, Noah English, Seb King, Harry Thorne, Ben McRobert, George Milgate and Sian Campbell.

High fives to Ms Gillespie, who helped the team go undefeated all season – not an easy thing to do!

Also, a big shout out to the SASC Leopards who fell short at the final hurdle in their Grand Final last night.

It was an all Scots All Saints affair in the final of the Central West ISA Singles Championships last Saturday in Bathurst.

Our very own Izaak Scott and Sarah Edwards won through to the final, playing some great tennis to beat their Kinross Wolaroi and Stannies rivals.

Izaak came out on top in the final and capped off a successful tennis season for the school.

Netball Reminder Please make sure you complete your netball registration as soon as possible. Parents and caregivers of our netballers were sent an Operoo at the start of the week with all the season and registration details.

MEMORIALS ON THE ALL SAINTS’ CAMPUS AND THOSE REMEMBERED The Alex Beckingham Garden: a garden of roses and annuals. Alex was a day student in Glover House, All Saints’ College, from Kindergarten to Year 10, who fought cancer for many years before her passing in 2001.

The Vin Suttor Garden: garden and seating near the flagpole in front of Kindergarten classrooms. The garden was named after T.Colvin (Vin) Suttor, an Old Boy (ASC 1925-6) ‘All Saints’ oldest living legend’ was a farmer from Mudgee and was instrumental in having flying taught at the school in 1963. Vin continued to be involved in the OBU, was on the School Council, was an inaugural member of the ASC Foundation, and his grandchildren came to the school.

The Andrew (Farmer) Fitzell memorial tree: Andrew was a boarder from Peelwood and attended ASC from 1994 until his passing in 1999. He was a Prefect and Vice-Captain of Kemmis House in 1998.

The Alistair Martin memorial tree: Alistair was a boarder from Rylestone from 2000 to 2005. He was a popular prefect and vicecaptain of Watson House.

Alistair died in 2008 at his home in Rylestone.

The Eliska Burns memorial tree: Eliska was a teacher and parent of the school. She

began teaching in the Junior School in 1988 as the Year 2 teacher. She was known as a very organised and enthusiastic teacher and her love of netball was passed onto her young students - as well as being a skilled player herself. She moved into the Resource centre as an assistant librarian in 1993 while completing a Librarian’s degree course. Eliska passed away after a brief illness in 1996.

The Jemma Caitlin Gordon memorial tree: Jemma was a day student in Glover House from Oberon. She began at All Saints’ in 2002 in Year 7 and graduated in 2007. Jemma was tragically killed in a single-car accident on her way to Nursing Studies at Charles Sturt University in 2008.

The Stiles Oval: This oval was constructed in 1948 to house more cricket, athletics and junior rugby games.

It was named after the fifth Headmaster, George Sydney Stiles, 1911-1919, when the School on the Hill was temporarily closed.

The Tracey Oval: This oval was constructed for the Junior School activities and named after the Third Headmaster Rev. Frederick Tracey, 1889-1898. It is now used by the Preparatory School and Lower Primary classes with play equipment and covered areas for outdoor activities. continued page 14

The Edgell Oval: This oval or playing area was purchased at the same time as Bradwardine House in 1958 and gave additional playing fields for both rugby and later netball courts and tennis courts, which were erected in the same area. The name Edgell was after the family who established the vegetable canning factory next door to the school. The Edgell family were strong supporters of the school and Old Boys of the school.

The School Chapel has a number of windows and plaques which are memorials in the names of various members of the school family who have passed. There are also many trophies, shields and honour boards which are dedicated to past members of the School Family. Some of these are displayed in the Watson Museum or around the school. Lists of these memorials are being compiled and stored on the Archives Register and Database, with photographs where possible and these lists continue to be ‘works in progress.’

The Watson Oval: This oval was completed in 1932 and originally called the Memorial Playing Field to Boys of the 1914-18 war. It was constructed voluntarily and supervised by William James Kell, 1896-1900 (TraceyBritten). Kell was a loyal member of the Old Boys’ Union and on the School Council from 1933 to 1939.

The Watson Memorial Wall is located next to the steps leading up to the oval, and the plaques are memorials to various members of the school family - namely teachers and Old Boys.

The Marjorie Emms Memorial Rose Garden is situated above the Watson Oval Memorial steps, and it is in memory of Marjorie Emms, who was the Headmaster’s Secretary during Mr Evans’ regime. Mrs Emms, as well as assisting with arrangements for school functions, also conducted dancing classes for the boys, donating the major portion of the fees to the school.

The Old Bathurstians’ Union Memorial Rose Walk leading up to the Chapel is for memorial plaques to remember past Old Bathurstians’ who had continued to support the school through their service on Old
