A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Stay positive, focused and strong – we are here with you The past week It has been a very busy week for all of us as we continue to come to grips with a rapidly changing world.

Our confidence and faith in all that we know is being sorely tested. My wife, Denise and I are like you too. Our parents are in their 90s, our boys are married with young children. They have, like all of us, financial commitments.

Their wives work casually and that has dried up.

We all have real life experiences of the ‘hit’ to lifestyles of our families, friends and ourselves.

In this climate, I want to give you some confidence about what your College is doing for your children, your family and our staff.

1. Be confident that we support each family to send your children to school or to support them at home at this time.

continues uninterrupted. For the small number of HSC students who could not attend, alternative tasks will be provided so that they are not disadvantaged.

3. With an average 65% of students from Pre-K–12 in attendance each day, be reassured that all teachers and support staff are focused on their learning and additionally ensuring those students not here are connected through remote learning systems.

4. Be reassured that our boarders are safe, well and cared for by the heads of house, the residential assistants, our dining staff, house mothers and cleaners.

5. Have confidence in our health care professionals on our campuses who are monitoring the health of all our students and monitoring government advice every day.

6. Be sure that we will notify/inform you, the staff and the students immediately if there are any health issues of concern and that we will move into action quickly.

7. Know that the College is here for all our students and that continuity of education is our goal and feel confident to talk to us about any concerns you have, be they financial or otherwise.

8. Look ahead. This disruption will be temporary – be confident of that too!

United Nations Youth Timor Project 2020 Congratulations to Scots All Saints College Year 11 student, Isobelle Sotter, who has been selected to attend the United Nations Youth Timor Leste Project 2020. Isobelle is one of only 12 students selected from around Australia to participate in this amazing opportunity. The Timor Leste Project is an unforgettable 2-week tour of East Timor, exploring the complex realities of development in one of our closest neighbours.

As part of the Timor Leste Project, Isobelle will learn about sustainable development and the challenges of international aid. She will also spend time working with local communities and grassroots organisations, including working closely with the United Nations Youth partner school in Maliana, Encouragement House.

Unfortunately, the tour has been postponed to 2021, however, Isobelle is hopeful that she will be able to attend next year.

Inter-House debating success Over the past couple of weeks, the Stage 3 students participated in the Inter-House Debating Competition.

This week we congratulated, two students for their outstanding efforts in this competition. Well done to Maggie (Year 6, Cowan House) and Nolan (Year 5, Dunlop House).

that bees play in our environment and fresh food supply. It’s not all about the yummy honey! Students explored the life cycle of Butterflies and made Inky Insects using our thumbprints.

Thank you to all of the Junior School staff who have been working incredibly hard to cater for the needs of students both at home and at school. Recent health advice has not changed and our school remains open and a safe place to be.

The NSW Government has advised that parents have the option of keeping their children at home to access remote learning OR to continue to send children to school for the classroom learning.

For those students who are now working at home, teachers are posting a daily learning plan at 8:50 am each morning. Whether at home or school, students are now being assigned the same units of work.

Kindergarten Kindergarten have been working very hard during Literacy this term. We are reading 100 sight words aloud every day and this is instilling confidence in students, oral reading. Students have learnt to login and work independently on the iPads. We have had a class focus on kindness and charts are filling with stickers as students show kind gestures towards their peers. The speeches were amazing. Students loved having them filmed and uploaded to Seesaw. During Maths we have been enjoying number blocks and have created pictures and unifix cubes to match these. Buddy time with Year 4 has also been an exciting highlight with lots of fun activities.

Year One Year One thoroughly enjoyed celebrating our beautiful country and its rich diversity for Harmony Day last week. Students in Year One explored in detail the lyrics our National Anthem, examined what Harmony Day is and learnt about the many ways it can be celebrated in our community. We encourage you to look at the display that Year One have created outside their classroom.

Students have been working diligently to create stunning artworks from a variety of mediums based on Bronwyn Bancroft’s story 'Why I love Australia'.

Each student learnt about and used adjectives to write descriptive sentences to narrate their artwork.

Students have been able to share these creations with their families via Seesaw.

Maurice originally comes from Western Australia and apparently he is quite the celebrity in Ballarat where he is often the first one up in the morning and he loves posing for photos.

Lithgow In Lithgow students have been learning about the properties of materials in packaging. They then designed a package that would keep a fragile hollow Easter egg safe if dropped from a height. Anyone who was successful could eat it!

Year 3 Adopt a Koala Our Year 3 Koalas are very excited to be adopting a koala. Students have adopted ‘Maurice’ from the Australian Koala Foundation. Maurice lives at the Ballarat Wildlife Park and our adoption will help save habitat for Australia’s koalas.

Year 6 House Captains show their Initiative

Challenge and Opportunity In the Middle of every difficulty lies opportunity – Albert Einstein We are currently living in unprecedented times where the concepts of risk and worry seem to dominate most conversations and certainly all forms of media. As parents, you need to know that at school we are still providing the students with productive learning experiences in the classroom.

Although we have had to take precautionary measures to protect students and staff such as more stringent hygiene practices, suspending co-curricular activities and limiting the size of gatherings, we have had the opportunity to focus one hundred percent on the academic program. I understand that the students are missing the co-curricular activities that they enjoy but the teachers are working hard to take advantage of the opportunity of having them in the classroom more.

As part of our positive psychology program at school we always try to promote an optimistic mindset in the students. When you successfully navigate your way through challenging times you realise that you will always get there if you keep trying. Persistence and perseverance are key indicators of resilience and we encourage all of our students to think positively and grab this opportunity to focus on their academic work and grow in their learning.

A few weeks ago our Year 6 House Captains attended a Leadership Seminar at St Paul’s College in Cranebrook. They participated in a range of activities that helped them set some goals for the year. I recently met with these students to discuss one of their plans, a Year 6 Fun Day, that they want to implement later in the year. It is always pleasing to see our students using their initiative and coming up with ideas that will improve and add to their experiences at school.

Keeping our Students Healthy We have been teaching the students the importance of good hygiene to stay healthy.

Good hygiene includes: • covering your coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue • disposing of tissues properly • washing your hands often with soap and water, including before and after eating and after going to the toilet • using alcohol-based hand sanitisers or soap and water • cleaning and disinfecting surfaces • Avoiding contact with others if you are sick • staying more than 1.5 metres away from people Assembly Roster We have decided to cancel assemblies for the remainder of the term on advice from the Government.

Faith Respect Compassion Knowledge This week I had reason to stop and reflect on these four values that we often focus on in Assemblies and in discussions with our young people. Each of these values, on their own, are relevant in the way we respond to the circumstances in which we find ourselves at the moment.

Faith gives us the ability to look for strength and guidance outside of our own understanding.

Respect and Compassion enable us to be mindful of others in our community. Knowledge is the gift that often keeps us on a steady keel - with a balanced perspective. It is challenging to be navigating an unknown pathway.

In our setting, encouragement comes in seeing how our teachers and support staff are working together to keep routines as normal as possible for our students. We are also encouraged by the manner in which our young people are proactively adapting to this tough but temporary situation.

Staying Connected is Important To ensure that boarding students were kept up to date and provided with classwork last week during the closure of the boarding house, I emailed the students - and copied the email to parents. The reply that I received from one boarding parent highlighted a difficulty faced by our students who need to be away from school over the coming weeks.

School is, by its very nature, a social place. I remember that when I was in Year 11 and Year 12, I was perhaps too keenly interested in the social aspect of school. I did not miss a single day in either year – not because I was concerned about falling behind in my studies, but because I was worried about being out of the 'social loop'. (I apologise to my parents if they are reading this.)

If and when students are away from school, their teachers will provide directions, resources and feedback to keep their academic program on track - but there is a risk of students experiencing a real feeling of social isolation from their friends and classmates.

Teachers are not well placed to fill the void here, and nor would the absent students wish this. Rather, the absent students are craving to hear from their friends, to catch up on happenings, to hear about the silly, frivolous, 'nothing-to do-with-learning' things that make school an enjoyable place to be.

Whether on campus or at home, we are all part of the Scots All Saints community. I encourage students on campus to ensure that they remain connected with their absent friends, in order to ensure that the sense of friendship and belonging is maintained.

Luckily, this generation of students has a wide array of social platforms by which they can remain connected. I would suggest, however, that the most powerful form of connection is the old-fashioned phone call; words are good, but words with emotion by way of tone of voice are better. Some kind of face-time is better still – it is better to see a smile or a laugh than to hear it.

I would ask that parents encourage their children to ensure that they stay connected with their friends. In doing so, I would also ask that parents remind their children about responsible use of social media. We should be looking to share the positive and uplifting, not the negative and never the hurtful or anxietyprovoking.

We need to ensure that what we share about others is not damaging to their reputation, whether it be truthful or gossip.

We need to ensure that what we share about ourselves (whether in words, pictures or in video) is not putting ourselves or our reputations at risk down the track.

Success for Cattle Team at Blayney Show Junior Judging Workshop and Competition Day On Friday 13 March our amazing cattle show team ventured to the Blayney Junior Judging Workshop and Competition Day held at Blayney Showgrounds.

With over 130 students participating in Beef Cattle, Meat Sheep, Fleece and Oral Judging workshops, it was a very busy day. The students had workshops all morning with experts in each field and were asked to judge the stock. In the afternoon students who had performed well in the judging were asked to do an oral speech to discuss their reasons for their placings within each class. This can be very intimidating in front of a crowd but our students took the challenge with enthusiasm and showed how confident they were by achieving the most amazing results.

The results were as follows: In the 13 Years Beef Cattle Judging Paige Hatton took out the prestigious first place and Philippa Webb taking out second place.

In the 13 Years Fleece Judging Patrick McKiernan took out first place.

In the 13 Years Sheep Judging Lily Kable came first and Sophie McAllan second.

In the 14 Years Sheep Judging Victoria Webb took first place.

In the Intermediate class of the Beef Cattle Judging Patrick Saint placed second.

In the Senior Fleece Judging and Senior Sheep Judging Felicity Webb took out first place in both classes showing that she is our expert Sheep and Wool Judge.

Lillian Oke showed off her Junior Judging skills taking out first place in the Beef Cattle Judging and third place in the Sheep judging class.

In the Senior Beef Cattle Judging Shannyn Neville placed second.

Bill McDonnell, Jake Mawhood and Lucas Kamper also placed well in the Junior Judging classes.

These results are just amazing when they were up against 130 other students. They not only know how to prepare and exhibit stock but they can also judge them!! continued page 8

Saturday saw us take our 20 steers to the Blayney Show. With it being the lead up show to Sydney Royal there were 50 high quality steers. This line up was the best I have ever seen at Blayney Show. Our steers looked fabulous and our students reaped the rewards of their hard work. SASC Cattle show team took out both Grand Champion and Reserve Champion steers. Grand Champion was a stunning Limousin steer prepared and paraded by Sacha Spence with the assistance of Courtney Robert and Logan Nicholson. This steer was bred by our very supportive friend, Mr Phil Kirk from Peak Hill. Our Reserve Champion Steer was a lovely black steer who was paraded by Victoria Webb, assisted by Eva Green and Hannah Dunn. He was a steer we bought earlier in the year and was bred by Mr Ashley Clark from Lyndhurst.

All of the other steers were placed highly – special mention must go to the steers in the Heavyweight class – a huge class with SASC taking out just about all of the top places.

During the day we heard the news that Sydney Royal Easter Show was cancelled – we were extremely disappointed as this year's group of students and cattle shows so much promise. It is possibly the strongest steer team we have ever had. The students took the news well and we look forward to being even stronger in 2021.

Young Rural Achievers 2020 Prior to the cancellations of all shows our Cattle Team members participated in the 2020 Young Rural Achievers Competition which is always linked to Bathurst Royal Show. The students are required to submit a letter and resume and then they are interviewed by a panel and asked questions relating to Agricultural issues and the role they play in our rural community. They are also asked questions relating to their future goals in the Agricultural industry.

Many students enter this competition and our students have achieved amazing results against other schools in the Central West.

Congratulations goes to all students for the wonderful job they did in all areas of this competition. The skills they learn along the way in writing resumes and having interviews is of paramount importance.

“Ton ami c’est moi” (You’ve got a friend in me) Friday 20 March was not only Harmony Day, it was also Francophonie Day. This day recognises the potential of language and culture to unite people, to create spaces of solidarity, and mutual understanding, and to reflect together on our common future.

Stage One recorded their French piece for the postponed Harmony Day. The words are most appropriate throughout these unprecedented times of our lives.
