We are delighted to once again welcome some of Australia’s most successful writers of fiction for children and young adults to the College for our Annual Literature Festival. From Monday 28 to Wednesday 30 March, our visiting authors and illustrators will be working with all of our young people across both campuses, covering Prep to Year 11.

The program is designed to inspire and motivate students to be great readers and writers, and our special guests will engage them in a wide range of seminars and workshops over the three days.

A very warm welcome is extended to Belinda Murrell, Lesley Gibbes, Anna Fienberg, John Larkin and Gus Gorton.

COVID-19

Thank you to the parents and students who attended our TRY DAY for Year 7 students, 2023.

From all accounts, it was a huge success, and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves. (I was extremely disappointed not to be there, but COVID struck me personally last Friday).

Please continue to monitor for COVID-19 and let the College know if your child tests positive. The weekly number of cases across the various age groups remains stable thanks to your diligence in monitoring, testing and isolating as required.

This Sunday – The House Rowing Erg Challenge Hopefully, you are all aware that this Sunday is the Rowing Erg Challenge in the Sports Centre to raise money for NSW flood victims, Ukrainian families and the Hope Care Cafe.

Each House shall aim to row an erg for 12 hours and complete 100km.

Students involved have been emailed a rowing roster with their allocated time. Students must arrive 30 minutes before their allocated time to ensure a smooth transition of rowers.

Students are to wear their House shirt and sport shorts.

They are also encouraged to bring a water bottle, small towel, and ‘sporting gloves’ (i.e. mountain bike riding gloves) – they can purchase a pair of cotton gloves on the day for $1.00, so that we can maintain a high standard of hygiene.

3. Cash donations and sausage sizzle: There will be a sausage sizzle on the day being run by the Mawson House captains, so families can purchase some food between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm. Cash donations can also be given during the day - just write the House name on an envelope with the enclosed cash, and this shall be added to the House tally.

The House Rowing Erg Challenge will be held on Sunday in the Senior School Sports Centre from 6:00am until 6:00 pm.

Year 7-12 HOMEWORK CENTRE

The Rowing Erg Challenge is an opportunity for the school community to give financially to those who are struggling – after the floods, in Ukraine, or within our own community by helping to purchase food for the Hope Care Café – that our students serve in.

So far, we as a community have raised almost $6,000 towards our $10,000 target. Cowan is leading the way with around $1,700. They are followed by Cuthbert with $1,200. Then Booth, Dunlop and Mawson are all around the $1,000.

You can financially support the students and our charities in a number of ways: 1. Give directly to the ‘Red Cross Flood Appeal’ or ‘the Ukraine World Vision Appeal’. This has the advantage of tax deductibility. Then email me with a copy of the receipt for the amount you gave and the House you support (Booth, Cowan, Cuthbert, Dunlop and Mawson). I shall add it to the House tally.

2. Give through the school’s Banking System: Using the same bank details as the one through which you pay fees, add the reference ‘[House Name] Soup Kitchen’ (eg. Cuthbert Soup Kitchen or Booth Soup Kitchen).

Harmony Day On Monday, our Junior School celebrated Harmony Day. Students were encouraged to dress up in orange or wear traditional cultural clothing. Harmony Day is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism and the successful integration of migrants into our community.

Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world, and Harmony Day is a day to celebrate this and work to maintain it. The message of Harmony Day is everyone belongs. It is all about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background.

Parent-Teacher Interviews Kindergarten to Year 6 interviews will take place in Week 9 beginning Monday, 28 March.

Junior School Cross Country Carnival The Junior School Cross Country Carnival will be held on Monday, 2 May 2022.

Easter Hat Parade - Thursday, 7 April It’s that time of year again when all Prep and K-2 students are encouraged to design and create an Easter hat for our very special Easter Hat Parade to be held on the Junior School Football Field at 2:30 pm on Thursday, 7 April. Students are encouraged to be as creative as they would like. Hats should be brought into school and given to the classroom teacher on Monday, 4 April. An Easter Service will also be held on Thursday.

Literature Festival Our annual Literature Festival is fast approaching once again. Students are looking forward to the Literature Festival, which commences on Monday, 28 March. Our Junior School students will engage in a range of activities led by prominent authors and illustrators, including Belinda Murrell, Lesley Gibbes, Anna Fienberg and Gus Gorton.

Stage 2 Camp Year 3 and 4 will head to the Wellington Caves, Taronga Western Plains Zoo and Burrendong Sport and Recreation Camp on the 31 March and 1 April.

They were very impressed with how kind Year 4 students are!

Most recently, ‘cooperation’ has been the focus in Year 4, and students discussed what team work looks like and sounds like, as well as the acronym TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More). Students had to cooperate and work together to navigate a hoop around a circle of students with linked arms. It was great to hear the positive and encouraging words students were using to help each other.

Careers Advice Mrs Helen Jones

University FACTS Day – Year 12, Friday 29 April The annual FACTS (Facts about Careers and Tertiary study) will be held at CSU Bathurst during Week 1, Term 2. We are sending ALL Year 12 students to this event as the majority of NSW Universities will be in attendance, plus there will be representative from TAFE NSW, Department of Human Services, Newcrest Mines, ADF, NSW Police Force, Private Colleges, employment agencies, selected trades and other stalls. This will help our Year 12 students to make decisions on their Pathways for 2023.

Look out for the parental permission note via Operoo soon.

White Card (NSW WH&S Induction Card) – Wednesday 4 May. This useful qualification is nationally recognised and opens up great opportunities for casual labouring jobs over the summer. Any Year 10 student looking to do work experience within the Trade Sector (EG: Plumbing, building, electrical) will need to have a White Card for their work experience placement. It is required in Years 11 and 12 if you choose VET subjects that require work placement.

The White Card gives you access to a wide range of job opportunities. Many think that this is needed only if you are working in construction, but it is required for anyone that needs to access a work site with multiple trades. For example, surveyors, architects, landscapers, fencers, archaeologist, and even owner builders!

If your son or daughter wishes to gain this qualification, please register their name with Ms Jones. The cost is $120 and will be billed to your account. It will be held at school and will run for the whole day (8:45-3:00 pm). Max 20 students per course.

Success at the Blayney Show

On Saturday, 19 March, the Sheep Team and Cattle Show Team had their first outing of the year at the Blayney Show.

CATTLE SHOW TEAM Blayney Show was our first show for the season. It saw our team exhibit 23 steers with great success, as both the middleweight and heavyweight classes SASC steers took out the top five places and then went onto to take out the Champion Steer (prepared by Millie Triggs and Olivia Pitt) and Reserve Champion Steer (prepared

by Ruby Dunn).

It was a challenging preparation with many of our students who were mentors coming down with COVID in the week prior, but our junior students (many of whom it was their very first show) stepped up and did an amazing job. The future of our team is very strong!

Our students went on to compete in the Junior Parader’s competition, up against a strong field.

Many of our students came home with many ribbons, but special mention goes to Fraser Gill, who won first place in a huge intermediate class.

Many thanks must go to our helpers on the day – Aly Cranston, Grace Dawes, Bruce Inwood, Shane Ryan, Matilda Ryan, Bailey Ryan, Felicity Webb and Leigh Scott – these people made the day possible and we are greatly appreciative.

We must also thank our loyal suppliers of quality steers – Summit Livestock, Uranquinty, Sunny point Meats, Oberon, Leigh and Linda Scott, Meadow Flat and Mr Phil Kirk, Peak Hill. Without these producers, our results would not be possible.

The teams are now in the final weeks of preparation for Sydney Royal, and we will exhibit 27 steers.

We have also begun calving, and already have some super calves for the 2023 show season.

SHEEP SHOW TEAM After getting the ewes all settled into their pens and any final grooming completed, the sheep team members waited patiently for their turn ‘on the mat’ as the other breeds were judged. Some team members were also able to step in and help exhibit animals for other studs who required an extra set of hands, learning some valuable animal handling skills from some not-so-well behaved rams. continued page 6

Against some stiff competition, our ram was awarded the Champion Australian White Ram and was exhibited proudly by Will Wilson and Robert Scott.

Our ewes also did well, collecting several first place ribbons for their age classes but ultimately missing out on the interbreed ewe.

In the handlers class, where students were judged on their showing abilities, we had plenty of success, with 2nd and 3rd place awarded to Lyla Hellyer and Lacey Booth, respectively (juniors) and 2nd and 3rd place awarded to Siana English and Scarlett Poll (seniors).

I would like to commend the team members for their enthusiasm and hard work in preparing the sheep throughout the term. This was their first experience with livestock showing for many students, and they exhibited their animals with significant maturity and teamwork.

The sheep team are now eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Aussie White lambs, which are due at the beginning of May. They will begin working with their Merino wethers, which they are preparing as part of the Merino Wether Challenge.

JUNIOR JUDGING DAY On the Friday before the Blayney Show, the Year 9 students from both the Cattle and Sheep teams joined 120 students from other local schools to participate in a Junior Judging event hosted by the DPI at Blayney Showgrounds.

This involved partaking in a series of workshops led by industry professionals about the assessment and judging of cattle, meat sheep, wool, grains and public speaking.

They then undertook their own judging for each of these products based on what they had learnt, with the finalists required to do a speech in front of their peers to justify their selections to the judge (a task which many students were very nervous about but that they learnt a lot from).

As a result of their efforts, the following students were placed in the 14 years age group: - Angus Ryan – 1st place beef judging - Belle Fitzpatrick – 1st place meat sheep judging - Mia Anderson – 2nd place meat sheep judging - Millie Nevill – 3rd place meat sheep judging - Emily Miles – 3rd place wool judging A big thank you to Megan Dunford and the Department of Primary Industries for organising this event, as it’s always a hugely valuable experience for our young agriculturalists and one which is very useful to them as they exhibit livestock in their senior years.

Oh, what a night!

The Scots All Saints College Parents and Friends Association would like to express our sincere appreciation to Christopher and Xanthe Morgan at Abercrombie House for being so accommodating given the weather for our annual Evening Under the Stars event. At the last minute, the Abercrombie House Team pivoted and created an indoor and verandah event seamlessly! Enormous thanks also to Amanda Kemp at the College for her support liaising with the P&F to create another wonderful night. I would also like to thank John Weeks and the College’s COO Matt Banning, for their contribution and support to this great event.

The Evening Under the Stars is a much-anticipated event on the Scots All Saints College calendar.

Incredibly, it has been one event that has run over the last three years, given all things Covid. The evening gives parents of enrolled students from Prep to Year 12 an opportunity to experience the splendid views of Abercrombie House and great food and conversation, allowing old friendships to be reignited and new friendships made.

Thanks to the College’s own Lauren Cant, School Captain of 2022, for entertaining the crowd in challenging circumstances, with many spread throughout the lower floors and outside grounds of Abercrombie House. Sensational efforts, thanks Lauren!

Year 7 Chicken Breed Research

Year 7 Agriculture and Food Technology students have just completed a project where students were required to research chickens and the living requirements of layer chickens.

They have used their research to design a hen house suitable of housing ten chickens.

Students were required to source recyclable materials and use an appropriate scale to create an accurate 3D model.

Chicken Breeds A comical take on chicken breeds research by Zoe Banning We all know what a chicken is. Most of us have probably eaten one or two.

Today I am going to be sharing with you the amazing world of the chicken breed.

Do you know how many chicken species there are in the world? Neither do I, but google says that there are more than 500 varieties of chickens.

Do you know of any chicken breeds? I am not talking about the deep-fried chicken you get at KFC. No! You may have heard of the Silkie, Orpington, Naked Neck, New Hampshire Red or the Barnevelder because apparently, these breeds are the ‘Top 20 Chicken Breeds for Your Backyard Coop’.

Have you ever wondered when chickens were first introduced to Australia? Well, according to Omlet. com.au, chickens came on the first fleet, and since then, they have become immensely popular, not just popular immensely popular.

What are you going to have for dinner tonight? Beef? Nah. Pork?

Nope. How about chicken!? Yes please! According to petkeen.com.au, Cornish Cross, Australorp, and the Bresse are the top three out of the ‘Top 20 Best Meat Chicken Breeds’. So maybe next time you go to Woolies, look out for those breeds instead.

12-Hour Rowing Competition Mr Bennett has organised a rowing competition.

The five Senior School houses will try to outdo each other in a continuous 12-hour run on the ergs. He is very excited and really wants to see the whole school involved.

Mr Bennett talked about how much he loved rowing.

“It’s a great opportunity to support those who have suffered this year,” he said. “Rowing is one of the sports I enjoy the most.”

Mr Bennett has 14 years of experience with rowing at previous schools, even winning championships.

The 12-hour Rowing Competition will be contested between the five Senior School houses. The race to donate $2,000 per house has already reached over halfway. There are many ways to donate to this cause, detailed in The Roar this week. Many thanks to Mr Bennett for organising this for the school.

Literature Festival 28, 29 and 30 March 2022 Five exciting authors and illustrators will be giving talks and workshops over the three days

Anna Fienberg AM The Tashi series of books has been very popular with younger readers, some of whom are now current parents! She has also written a number of other novels, mostly for younger readers, but also some for older ones. Many of these novels have won awards such the Children’s Book of the Year Award and the Allan Marshall Award for Children’s Literature.

Lesley Gibbes

John Larkin

For most of her life, apart from some time in Wagga Wagga, Lesley Gibbes has lived on Sydney, mostly on the Northern Beaches. She was a primary school teacher for several years, writing plays and skits for performance, and choreographing dances, before becoming a professional author. Lesley Gibbes is most notable for the Fizz the Police Dog series of books. There have also been a number of picture books and other novels, mostly for junior readers.

Born in Yorkshire, England, John Larkin and his family emigrated to Australia in 1969. He is a graduate of Macquarie University after studying English Literature, Education and Creative writing. John Larkin has written a number of books for younger readers such as Spaghetti Legs, Goon Town, Lasagne Brain and Goontown. For young adults he has written The Shadow Girl and The Pause.

Gus Gordon Since 2005, Gus Gordon has illustrated over 80 children’s books, beginning with Jackie French’s To The Moon and Back. He has since collaborated with a number of other authors such as Philip Gwynne, and has published a number of books of his own. Gus’s own books largely features animals instead of humans.

Some of his other titles include The Catawampus Cat, Somewhere Else, I’m a Cow, Hear Me Moo, and Big Pet Day.

Belinda Murrell In 1841, Charlotte Waring Atkinson published A Mother’s Offering to Her Children, the first children’s book published in Australia.

Her descendent Belinda Murrell continues the family tradition with many books published in Australia and overseas. She has written Adventures of Lulu Bell series of books, and the Pippa’s Island series—a total of 35 books in all.

THE PREP SCHOOL RE-OPENING -25 YEARS ON Going back to its days as The Scots College Branch School, The Scots School was a junior school with boys in Years 1-6 and junior secondary. It was regarded as a feeder school for The Scots College in Sydney, to where many Scots Bathurst boys went to complete their schooling. In his diary that was the subject of an article earlier this year, the Headmaster 1949-1952, Alan McLucas recorded he had higher ambitions than this, and in due course Scots began taking students to leaving certificate level and Year 11, as well as continuing with infants and primary school boys. The Junior School teacher for much of the period was Mr John Bulkeley.

In the middle 1960s, a decision was taken to close the Junior School and concentrate on secondary school students. However, in 1996, this decision was reversed, and in 1997 Scots once more welcomed Junior school students.

Much of the setting up of the school and the work for accreditation was done by Mrs Marg Byrom. She was one of two staff appointed to run the Prep School. The other was Mr Brad Donald. Mrs Byrom was a well-known Scots parent and local junior school teacher. Brad Donald graduated from Charles Sturt University and was already well known to the Scots community as a Resident Staff Member in Thompson House, serving a brief period as Head of the house. He left teaching to become Development Officer in the Central West and has since gone to coach the Queensland women’s rugby league team, and since 2016, the championship-winning national team, the Jillaroos.

The Scots Preparatory School re-opened in 1997 after a break of nearly 30 years. The photograph shows the boys and staff members of the Preparatory School during its first week in February 1997. The Prep School, as it was then known, opened in February 1997 - and celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. By the time of integration with All Saints in 2018, there were a hundred children, and in the meantime it had gone co-educational. After Mrs Byrom left, Mrs Kerry Robinson, Mr Adrian Lee and Mr Anthony Roohan all led the team in the Junior School as it later became known.

HICES Debating Round One Last week marked the beginning of the HICES Debating Competition for 2022, with Round 1 underway for our debaters in Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. Due to the shifting landscape, this year’s debates will be conducted over Zoom, which means less travel for our debaters and more opportunities to debate schools from further afield.

Our first debate was held on Wednesday, 16 March for the 7/8 team of Stirling Miller, Olivia Mills, Suhaila Murshed and Eliza Rennie, who came up against International Grammar School in Ultimo, arguing the merits of matching the length of the school day to the age of the student. Some robust discussion ensued, and SASC emerged victorious. Next up on Friday, 18 March saw our Year 11 team of Ella Kay, Charlotte Bertwistle, Luke Woodhead and Emily Brown rise to the challenge of considering the proposition of placing a minimum age requirement of 21 on admission to university.

proposals, but ultimately our SASC team secured the win. Our final debate for Round One was in the 9/10 division on Monday, 21 March, and our team of Chido Mutyiri, Hannah Howes and Elizabeth Walsh engaged in spirited discussion around the idea of mandatory community service as part of the school curriculum. The topic was challenging, but the SASC team were up to the task and argued their way to a win over Macquarie Anglican Grammar School. After an impressive start to the competition, we now look forward to Round 2, which will take place before the end of term. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Maher for his assistance with adjudication across Round 1.
