A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Welcome to Mr Weeding Late last year Mr Andrew Weeding was appointed as the first Deputy Head of College (P-12). This new role also incorporates the Head of Senior Campus (9-12) and will see Mr Weeding working with students, parents and staff on a daily basis.

Mr Weeding brings his extensive experience to the College and is really looking forward to working closely with the community. He has been a Boarding House Master, Head of Department (Science) and Head of Senior School in his professional journey.

Evening Under the Stars

A special social evening for Prep to Year 12 parents held at Abercrombie House.

He is in charge of HSC Chemistry marking and brings important insights into the operation and requirements of HSC studies and the strategies students need to employ to maximize their opportunities through effective preparation.

Mr Weeding is married to Megan and has a son – Oliver at university, and a daughter – Amelia who is in Year 11.

At the Senior School assembly, the students warmly welcomed Mr Weeding to the College. He in turn, outlined his personal philosophy towards learning, encouraging them to be the best they can be!

Students celebrate Chinese New Year Mrs Nelson (EALD teacher), Mr Tom van Gend, Ms Tracey Leaf and myself were very excited to be able to celebrate the Chinese New Year with students recently.

We all enjoyed a meal at a local restaurant the Chinese Inn, to show our continued support of the students and recognising this significant time of year for them.

Mrs Nelson is a frequent visitor to the Chinese Inn and the students thoroughly approved of her choice of restaurant.

The students were very happy with the variety of dishes and flavours and were very excited to be able to sit and eat in a restaurant.

In keeping with the traditions of the Chinese culture of giving a red envelope, we gave each of the students an envelope and in them were a few small items, along with fortune cookies and crisps shaped like kangaroos!

After dinner we went to the park and took a few photos of the students and Mrs Nelson, to remember the evening.

As a lovely dessert treat, Mr van Gend took us all to McDonalds for an ice cream before we brought the students back to the boarding houses.

It’s hard to believe that we’re half way through the term already. The students have had a very settled start to the year and it is wonderful to see all of the learning taking part in the classrooms. I’d like to wish our students all the best for the upcoming HICES Swimming Carnival on Monday. Our Junior Swimming Carnival was a great success and the students and parents created a warm and friendly atmosphere for all students to compete in. A big thank you to Mr Wilkinson and Mrs Nelson for coordinating the event.

On Monday evening, Mrs Frances Duffy from the THRASS Institute presented an informative session about THRASS. I hope everyone who attended the night found it informative. For those parents who ordered a THRASS chart via Operoo, the charts have been ordered and should arrive soon.

Some of our Preparatory School classes enjoyed a visit to our Kindergarten rooms last week and met the Kindergarten teachers and joined in for an afternoon of activities.

I’m looking forward to an ‘Evening under the Stars’ on Saturday night at Abercrombie House. I hope that lots of Junior School parents and guardians can join us for this occasion. It will be a great opportunity to meet one another and see what our community is all about.

After School Pick-Up Just a reminder that parents of students in K-4 should use the car park at the front of Esrom House behind the new black fencing when collecting their child/ children after school and when dropping them off in the morning. Parents of Preparatory students should use the car park adjacent to the new Preparatory School. Parents of K-2 students can pick up/drop off from the lawn at the front of the Junior School office but should remain physically distant and avoid prolonged mingling.

Public Speaking Program This week you would have received some information relating to our Public Speaking Program. The program provides students with the opportunity to develop a range of skills. Each term students will be presented with a different task that they will prepare at home and present to their peers. This week students will spend some time brainstorming and completing the planning template as part of their homework. Please refer to the handbook that was issued this week or speak with your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

Junior School Camps and Excursions Excitement is building around the Stage 2 camp. Year 3 and 4 will head to the Crusader Camp at Galston Gorge between 15 and 17 March.

K-2 classes will take part in agricultural based excursions in coming weeks. This initiative which is part of our STEM program aims to connect our students with local communities, producers and industries and bring real- life local farming experiences to our students. The program aims to challenge the way students think about food and where it comes from.

Stage 1 will travel to the Huntley Berry Farm on Tuesday 23 March where they will undertake a full tour of the farm, including production and marketing techniques and a small punnet of fresh fruit for every child.

Kindergarten are off to the College Farm on Campus East on Monday 29 March. Year 9 will assist Kindergarten as they place the sheep in the yards to weigh and observe the cows/calves. Kindergarten will also learn about some of the farm tools including the tractor, scales, cattle yards, shovels. Sounds exciting!

Further details of both K-2 excursions will be released shortly.

Premier’s Reading Challenge Recently students would have received information relating to the Premier’s Reading Challenge in their Library classes. Once again, we encourage all students to take part in the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Through the challenge, we aim to encourage a love of reading and enable students to experience the joys of quality literature.

ROAR It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. Whilst the Challenge commenced on 1 March, it’s not too late to join as students have until 20 August to complete it. Let’s join the challenge Junior School!

Digital Thumbprint Earlier this week all Middle School students listened to a presentation call 'Digital Thumbprint'. This presentation forms part of our Cyber safety education program. Students learnt about the implications of posting information and photographs online.

Year 7 and 8 Camp Parent Information Night On Thursday 11 March, Mr Steve Fox form the Outdoor Education Group will be conducting an information session for parents of students in Year 7 and 8 on the upcoming Outdoor Education Camps in the first week of Term 2. Year 7 will be at 7:00 pm and Year 8 at 7:30 pm in the Kemmis Building.

Our current Year 6 student will also participate in the program for the day. On Sunday 14 March our 2021 new Middle School boarders will be having a sleepover in the boarding house.

Learning valuable online safety skills On Monday, Campus West had a visit from Optus Digital Thumbprint to speak to all our Middle School classes about cyber safety and cyber bullying.

Developing knowledge and understanding in these areas is critical to helping our students stay safe online.

The interactive sessions concentrated on preventing hacking through password security; developing passwords to keep your information safe; two-step authentication of passwords and what information you should share in the ‘public’ domain.

Additionally, the session on cyber bullying identified the risks of online gaming and chat rooms and how to respond to online threats.

Hats As of next week, Monday 1 March, all students are required to wear their formal hat to and from school with the exception of Thursdays when they wear their sports uniform to school. At recess, lunch and during PE lessons students are now expected to wear either a College bucket hat or the formal hat. As they do not meet our sun safe policy, baseball style caps can no longer be worn at school.

Battle of the Bands

Since arriving at the College on Monday morning I have been overwhelmed by the amazing welcome I have received. The students have been most generous in helping me settle in, whether it be checking in to see how I am, asking if I know where to go or taking a moment to tell me a little a bit about themselves. The assembly on Tuesday was very special. The kind words that were delivered by Simi and Jonah, the beautiful prayers by Tom and Samuel and the amazing piece by Oscar made for a very memorable service. I had the privilege of then addressing the students with ‘personal best’ as the theme.

Together as students and staff we can all work towards achieving a personal best every day. I am most appreciative and thankful for God’s calling that has led me to this wonderful school.

In 2019 Scots All Saints College hosted the regional round of the da Vinci Decathlon for the Central West. This is a most worthwhile competition where students work in teams of eight throughout the day to tackle questions across ten academic disciplines. We encourage all students in Year 9 to 11 to participate. Combating Negativity Bias – The Importance of Positivity While they may be unpleasant, negative emotions have a very important purpose – allowing us to survive as a species. Humanity has relied on these powerful emotions to protect us from danger and remain an essential part of our evolution. However, there is a substantial downside to this survival mechanism. This evolutionary mechanism in our brains, known as the Negativity Bias, makes us pay more attention to the negative experiences or things in our life than the positive. There’s a good reason for this. For survival, our ancestors had to be more aware of life-threatening risks such as predators. Paying too much attention to the positive things around them (that did not pose a threat) made no sense when survival was a day-to-day proposition.

Fortunately, life is much safer in the 21st century. But, the Negativity Bias is still alive and well in the primitive part of our brain. Our brains are, in fact, hardwired to ‘Velcro’ the negatives and ‘Teflon’ the positives. This can cause problems for us by creating an unhealthy positiveto-negative emotional ratio, which can contribute to mental illness.

As parents and as teachers the way that we interact with the young people in our care is therefore very important. Given the bias that focuses on the negative, our interactions need to weigh in very much on the 'positive side' of the scale in order to achieve traction.

The ratio of 5 positive interactions for every 1 negative interaction – the so called 'magic ratio' of relationships – has been often quoted since the 1970s when Dr John Gottman and Robert Levenson commenced longitudinal studies of married couples in conflict.

A Google search of “positive to negative interaction ratio” provides a multitude of articles citing the Gottman ratio in other relationships, including parentchild, teacher-student and even business-client. these relationships, it is not unreasonable to assume that there will, at times, be conflict – especially if we view the cause of conflict as “unmet expectations”.

While there may be quibbling about the exact numerical ratio, there is general agreement that relationships are more likely to be stable – and even thrive – in situations where the number of positive interactions far exceed the negatives. I am sure that we, as parents and as teachers, can readily identify many ways that we might negatively interact with our children and students. For those wishing to augment the positive side of the scale, may I humbly present some alternatives: • Be interested. Add verbal and visual cues (positive body language such as smiling or nodding) to show you’re listening.

• Empathise. Empathy is one of the deepest forms of human interaction. Empathy not only helps the other person feel heard, it helps them feel understood.

• Show them they matter. It’s the small things that go a long way. Go out of your way to do something thoughtful.

• Intentional appreciation. Show and verbalise how appreciative you are – this shows the other person that you do not take them for granted.

Give specific positive feedback/praise.

• Respect their perspective. This is tough, especially when we are the one that’s right!

(Because we’re always right…am I right?)

Differing perspectives is what life is all about.

That’s how we learn to be better. Even if you don’t necessarily agree with the other person’s perspective, validating it and respecting that it’s there can go a long way.

• Laughter. Above all. Laughter.

One thing I am one hundred percent positive about as a father is that our kids are precious, and they grow up – far too quickly. So we need to love them, to treasure them, and to ensure that they know it by how we interact with them.

Year 12 - Regional University Roadshow

The Regional University Roadshow visited Campus East on Tuesday with representatives from the University of New England (UNE), Southern Cross, University of Newcastle (UON) and Charles Sturt University in attendance.

Year 12 students were provided information in regards to their own Universities, plus advice on the application process, scholarships, and living away from home.

Sportsmen of the past (1874-1934) Since the beginning, All Saints’ College has had a number of high achieving sportsmen amongst the Alumni in many different fields.

Some of the earlier Alumni sportsmen have been mentioned in the Steel and Antill’s book The History of All Saints’ College amongst Notable Old Boys section.

When the school first opened in 1874 cricket and horsemanship were favoured amusements of Western schoolboys. In its early years the school was hampered by the lack of playing fields as it was on the steep hill site where Bathurst High School stands. When the school reopened at Esrom after WWI the new Watson Memorial Oval was established as a tribute from the Old Boys to those of their number who fell in the Great War. Originally cricket had 'easily the first place in the games of the school’. With the reopening of the school, under the Headmaster, Rev. Watson, himself a splendid batsman and all-round cricketer, the ASC First XI won the Bathurst District first grade premiership for three consecutive seasons, entitling them to hold permanently the President’s Cup.

In Rugby in 1928 ASC defeated Wolaroi College 115nil, said to be a record in Rugby Union at the time.

The matches against St Stanislaus were always ‘keen’ but unfortunately in 1897 this fine series of intercollegiate matches was interrupted by a ‘dispute’ so for many years after the schools only met in club competitions.

In the early years, other sports, tennis, athletics, swimming, rifle shooting were part of the school’s curricula but did not produce the champions like the following alumni.

Sir Charles Gregory Wade, one of the first three boys of All Saints’ on its opening day January 1874 ‘in addition to his political, judicial and scholastic attainments was an outstanding athlete’, playing International football for England whilst at Oxford University 1883-1886. His younger brother Leslie Augustus Burton Wade, also All Saints’ an Alumni, played for NSW Rugby Union against Queensland in 1883 and 1888, and against Great Britain in 1888.

James Whiteside Fraser McManamey (18781880?) ‘was a splendid forward’ played for NSW against Queensland in 1882 and for many years was president of the NSW Rugby Union. continued page 12

Arthur Aubrey Palmer (1887-1889) after leaving All Saints’, went to Edinburgh University in 1889 to study Medicine and while there he represented Scotland for a number of years in First Class cricket.

A few years after leaving All Saints’ in 1889 Thomas Robert McKibbin played cricket for NSW and Queensland against England and for Australia against England with top averages.

In 1895-96 season he played for NSW against the other states and in 1896 he was a member of the Australian XI that toured England and in that tour held first in bowling and third in batting averages.

John Norman Smith (1893-1897) in 1896 broke the school’s record in throwing a cricket ball (108 yds 4 inches) and in broad jump (19ft.3in.) and later at the Australasian championships in 1897 he was second in throwing the cricket ball (112y ds) and second in broad jump (20ft.3/4 in.) He played football for Western Union against New Zealand in 1897 and for New South Wales v. Queensland in 1900.

Norman Arthur Kingsbury Wallis (1915-1918) was an outstanding yachtsman, who in 1930 represented NSW in the Bass Strait Interstate Race and made the first recorded passage by a NSW yacht to Lord Howe Island.

Ronald Gordon Stanley (1914-1918) ‘one of the best allround sportsman the school has ever produced’ played Rugby Union against the Maoris 1922-3, representing Australia and New South Wales. He also made his name

in Rugby Union as captain of the Trinidad team 193032 in the West Indies where he was a medical specialist. He played golf, tennis and billiards winning many trophies.

Ronald Regnor Biilman (1923-1925) played cricket for the school scoring 11 centuries, in the Western District XI v England in 1928 and in 1930-31 he played with the Combined Country XI v. West Indies.

As a footballer he represented NSW against Queensland and the Rest of Australia in 1932 and toured South Africa with the Australian Rugby Union XV (Wallabies) and again for NSW in 1934.

Rodney Rouse Dangar (1890-1892), a successful pastoralist and horse breeder, in 1932 and 1934 won the Melbourne Cup with his own racehorse, Peter Pan. Since 1934 there have been many more notable sportsmen amongst the alumni in a wider variety of sports and it is because the headmasters and staff of the time that All Saints’ students continued to enjoy success on the sports fields. Many of the headmasters and staff were good athletes themselves and encouraged the students with their enthusiasm and personal achievements.

COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe Dear Parents and Carers, Sports Spectators Update: This week our COVID-19 Update includes some great news. After consulting with the ISA, our COVID-19 team met last week and have resolved to make changes to weekend sport. From now on, when Scots All Saints hosts a home game we will permit one parent or carer per player to attend as a spectator. In order for this to happen we ask that each spectator uses the QR code to scan in and sign the declaration upon arrival, remain in close proximity to the game or match and of course, maintain social distancing whilst on site.

We know that parents and carers have really missed being able to watch our students with a home ground advantage and look forward to welcoming you back to enjoy these Game Day Protocol For Players

events. We will of course continue to monitor the situation and will adjust our guidelines as the COVID-19 situation develops over time.

With the COVID-19 continuing to settle we’re maintaining the status quo here at school however it’s still very important to remember that this is not the time for complacency. We’ve all seen how easily one case of COVID19 can spread through a community and wreak havoc, by following guidelines for testing, hygiene, contact tracing and social distancing we limit the impact of COVID-19 if it does enter our community. Entry Protocol at Campus West (Saints) Fields

No players, coaches, staff or spectators are to attend Scots All Saints College Campus West (Saints) Fields if they: • Are unwell or have flu-like symptoms. Please check the NSW Government website for advice regarding the full list of symptoms associated with COVID-19 infection: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/symptoms-and-testing.

• Have been in contact with a known or suspected case of COVID-19 or who are in self-isolation.

• Are living with someone deemed to be clinically vulnerable to the virus.

• Are deemed to be living with clinically vulnerable individuals.

Game Day Protocol For Players

Player will register with their coach/manager on a team sheet/roll and QR code

No shaking hands or high fives

Arrive no earlier than 30 mins prior and depart directly following the conclusion of their match

Do not enter Sports Grounds if feeling unwell

No spitting

Practise good hygiene - wash hands regularly and bring your own hand sanitiser

Players must turn up in playing gear as limited change rooms available.

Bathrooms are available
