A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Covid-19 Update The College continues to carefully manage Covid cases across our schools and campuses. Thank you to all parents for your diligence in notifying positive test results, as this helps us monitor the situation in an informed manner.

As I write, there are two (from 80) members of our teaching staff in isolation. Both are scheduled to return early next week.

The positive test results vary from age group to age group. Two weeks ago our Prep children were being infected, this week very few were in Prep or K-6. (A total of seven from 320 children).

Preparing for Year 7, 2023 On Tuesday, we welcome over 100 boys and girls from Year 6 to experience a Day @ Scots All Saints.

This is our first ‘Try Day’ for students commencing in Year 7, 2023, and we look forward to a great day together.

The program for the day begins with breakfast in the Aikman Hall at the Senior School from 7:45 am for students and parents.

Car parking is on the front oval from 7:45 am.

This week Year 9 students, with 13 from 90 students, are in isolation with an average of five per year group: 7, 8, 10, 11, 12. (Total 25).

While these rates are considered relatively low, we must remain vigilant at all times and complete at home testing should any symptoms appear.

Journeying towards Easter and finding the Son of God Every Easter weekend, a selection of Jesus movies are broadcast on television. One of my favourites is The Greatest Story Ever Told. The director George Stevens made the film in 1965, and it contains the who’s-who of Hollywood. Max von Sydow plays Jesus, Telly Savalas was Pilate, Sidney Poitier performed Simon of Cyrene, and the celebrity list in the film goes on and on. One of my favourite scenes involves the legendary western star John Wayne, who plays the Centurion at the cross.

In it, Jesus is at the end of his life, and John Wayne’s character, surrounded by lightning and the roar of thunder, declares (in his only line): “Truly this man was the son of God!” (Mark 15:39). According to eyewitnesses, Wayne’s cowboy droll was so bad that Stevens realised that he had to re-shoot the scene. Rather than insult the famous actor, he told Wayne he was going to relocate the camera for a better shot. Stevens also reminded Wayne of the importance of this moment in the Centurion’s life as he realised who Jesus really was. He said, “Can you give me awe as you say the line?”

The cameras rolled again, and Wayne added the word to his performance but not the emotion. In his western droll he said, “Awe, truly this man was the son of God.” In my first The Roar article in this series, I quoted the Bible verse: The Lord says, “These people honour me with their lips, but their heart is far from me” (Isaiah 29:13, and Mark 7:6). What Wayne missed in his portrayal of the Centurion was the incredible, transformational moment of his character’s life - his heart would be changed forever.

For millions of people around the world, they too have come to the same startling conclusion: “Truly this man was the Son of God.” And this heartfelt belief has transformed their lives and opened up a whole new future of cosmic optimism.

Please support our school fundraiser Finally, I’d like to finish my article with a brief mention of next weekend’s fundraiser (on Sunday, 27 March). I invite you to support the group of students who will be rowing ergs for 12 hours in the Senior School Sports Centre. They are rowing in House teams with the aim of raising money for Hope Care meals (the local Soup Kitchen) that we serve in, the NSW flood victims and the families displaced in Ukraine. Please support their efforts with a donation and in so doing become a blessing to those doing it tough. Amen.

People's Choice Youth Art Prize The People's Choice awards for the Bathurst Youth Art Prize 2022 have been counted with almost 500 votes cast last weekend!

It’s that time of year again when all Prep and K-2 students are encouraged to design and create an Easter hat for our very special Easter Hat Parade to be held on the Junior School Football Field at 2:30 pm on Thursday, 7 April. NAPLAN Practice Window (Year 3 and 5) 21 March onwards In 2022, all schools will participate in NAPLAN online. NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning at school.

Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the format of the online tests during a practice test window, which commences on Monday, 21 March.

The window will allow staff to become familiar with the functionality of the online assessment platform and students to gain familiarity with the test format, functions and tools of the online tests in a test environment. NAPLAN will be held for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 from the 10-20 May. Year 5 will familiarise themselves with the online format on Thursday, 24 March and Tuesday, 29 March, whilst Year 3 will take part on Friday, 25 March.

Literature Festival Our annual Literature Festival is fast approaching once again. Students are looking forward to the Literature Festival which commences on Monday, 28 March. Our Junior School students will engage in a range of activities led by prominent authors and illustrators, including Belinda Murrell, John Larkin, Lesley Gibbes, Anna Fienberg and Gus Gorton.

Stage 2 Camp Excitement is building around the Stage 2 camp. Year 3 and 4 will head to the Wellington Caves, Taronga Western Plains Zoo and Burrendong Sport and Recreation Camp on 31 March and 1 April.

Public Speaking (Years 3-6) Students in Years 3-6 should be busy preparing their first speech of the year. Speeches will be prepared at home over a three-week period before students present them in front of their peers in Week 9. Speeches will be assessed against a set-criteria with the highest-ranked student from Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 being selected to present their speech at the CWA Public Speaking Contest to be held from the 23-26 May. Kreative Koalas Our Stage 3 Kreative Koalas group has been meeting every Tuesday this term, and last week they had to finalise and submit their ideas for a sustainability project. I was super impressed with the ideas that the group came up with. continued page 6

Ideas included packaging from building sites, recycling in fast-food outlets and plastic wrapping on supermarket items.

After much discussion, debate and voting, the group agreed to explore the local platypus habitat. If successful, the group will undertake a range of projects, including artwork on a fibreglass koala, digital learning journey, and community action project. Here’s a summary of our project submission: Platypus numbers in the nearby Macquarie river are on the decline. We want to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of local ecosystems, manage forests, halt and reverse land degradation and conserve water to ensure that platypus numbers remain viable.

Mathematics in the Junior School As a staff, we are always reflecting on and looking at ways to improve our practice. At the end of 2021, we formed a Numeracy Committee made up of teachers who are passionate about teaching and learning in Mathematics.

At recent staff meetings, staff have been delving

deeper into what we want our students to know and do, what we can do for those who find the learning challenging, and where to next for those who have demonstrated proficiency.

Our Year 4 and 6 classes are engaging in a different approach to Mathematics in 2022, which focuses on one strand at a time and purposely builds on the individual’s prior knowledge. We’re continuing to reflect on this new approach as we review best practice in teaching and learning in Mathematics.

Buddy time Year 6N finally met their Kindergarten buddies this week (KW), which made all the students very happy! The Kindergarten students took Year 6 to the Infant's playground and then drew a map with their buddy, highlighting the safe places to play. They are looking forward to seeing them again soon.

NAPLAN Update Our NAPLAN schedule for 2022 commenced this week with the majority of Year 7 and Year 9 students overcoming the first challenge, which was downloading the ‘Lockdown Browser’ software. We ask that students who may have been absent or had difficulty downloading the software to seek support from Mr Jarrett in the IT Department Office (near the library). Our students can also access the download from the English Home Page on Canvas.

Please note that when students launch the ‘NAP Lockdown Browser’, they will not be able to access other programs or applications on their device.

Next week, we will be conducting some practice tests for the students. These practice tests will give our students exposure to the online format of the tests. They will also allow our College and ACARA to test the capacity of the infrastructure in readiness for the actual NAPLAN tests in May. Child Safety Handbook The “NSW Police Legacy Child Safety Handbook” is a comprehensive resource to assist parents, carers as well as teachers on a range of topics essential to child safety.

The handbook has been updated to include key messages about storm and flood safety, COVID safety, children's personal safety and online safety.

Student-Led Conferences – Year 7 The Student-Led Conferences through ZOOM is approaching for our Year 7 parents/carers and students. The conferences are a vital component for keeping our students on track with their learning and also for keeping our parents informed of their child’s progress and learning goals. Please note that the Year 7 Student Led Conferences are scheduled for Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 March. Booking instructions for the conferences using the PTO platform were sent out to parents by Mrs Norris. Parents are required to book a timeslot suitable for them and their child to attend via ZOOM. On the afternoon/evening of your appointments, parents are required to sign in to PTO to access the teacher ZOOM links, which can then be forwarded to students including, boarding students who are encouraged to attend the meeting.

Stage 6 report The term is flying by with just a few weeks remaining. It is wonderful to see the students working well and applying themselves to their school work while contributing to the whole school community across their many leadership roles.

Annie Craig – Year 11 Annie’s passion and natural ability for women’s rugby are evident with her recent selection to the Brumbies Under 19 squad, who have a series of games surrounding the SuperW rugby program. Mia Baggett – Year 12 Mia’s love of netball has seen her rise through the ranks from local to district and now to state representation. Mia has been selected for the Under 19 NSW squad and is currently playing for the Swifts Academy. Mia is also contracted to play for the Sutherland Stingrays Premier League Team. Mia’s amazing organisation skills are coming in handy as she juggles her HSC studies and her commitment to netball. She is an amazing role model for all our young women at the College.

CSU Explore Day This week many Year 11 and Year 12 students participated in the CSU Explore days at CSU across their Bathurst and Orange campuses. This wonderful opportunity saw students participate in seminars of their choice across a wide range of degrees. Our students spent time learning about nursing, policing, teaching, communications, engineering, paramedicine, physiotherapy, medicine and health sciences. The opportunity to be on campus and experience uni life helps students visualise what their post school life could look like. It can relieve any anxiety or stress they may have and assist in giving them a focal point. We are very lucky to have a world-class university literally at our doorstep.

How would you like to meet a real live author?

Each year for several years, the Library has invited a number of authors to visit the College to talk to students about authoring and illustrating books, and in 2022, this will happen again. Most of the authors will be visiting the Junior School Campus, but a few will also talk to students on the Senior School Campus.

For this year, four authors and one illustrator will be visiting.

Anna Fienberg AM The Tashi series of books has been very popular with younger readers, some of whom are now current parents! She has also written a number of other novels, mostly for younger readers, but also some for older ones. Many of these novels have won awards such the Children’s Book of the Year Award and the Allan Marshall Award for Children’s Literature.

Gus Gordon Since 2005, Gus Gordon has illustrated over 80 children’s books, beginning with Jackie French’s To The Moon and Back. He has since collaborated with a number of other authors such as Philip Gwynne, and has published a number of books of his own. Gus’s own books largely features animals instead of humans.

Some of his other titles include The Catawampus Cat, Somewhere Else, I’m a Cow, Hear Me Moo, and Big Pet Day.

Lesley Gibbes For most of her life, apart from some time in Wagga Wagga, Lesley Gibbes has lived on Sydney, mostly on the Northern Beaches. She was a primary school teacher for several years, writing plays and skits for performance, and choreographing dances, before becoming a professional author. Lesley Gibbes is most notable for the Fizz the Police Dog series of books. There have also been a number of picture books and other novels, mostly for junior readers.

John Larkin Born in Yorkshire, England, John Larkin and his family emigrated to Australia in 1969. He is a graduate of Macquarie University after studying English Literature, Education and Creative writing. John Larkin has written a number of books for younger readers such as Spaghetti Legs, Goon Town, Lasagne Brain and Goontown. For young adults he has written The Shadow Girl and The Pause.

Belinda Murrell In 1841, Charlotte Waring Atkinson published A Mother’s Offering to Her Children, the first children’s book published in Australia. Her descendent Belinda Murrell continues the family tradition with many books published in Australia and overseas. She has written Adventures of Lulu Bell series of books, and the Pippa’s Island series—a total of 35 books in all.

ISA Swimming Congratulations to our Senior School swimmers, who have earned a place in the ISA swim team. From the All Saints' College archives

REMEMBERING SERVANTS OF THE PAST Fudeko Reekie is one of the longest-serving staff members at All Saints’ College from 1975 to 2009.

Fudeko joined the staff in 1975 under the headship of Mr Peter Gebhardt and since then worked under the leadership of no less than seven Heads of College.

Fudeko has been an integral member of the school. With her many talents, she has made significant contributions to the school through her teaching of Japanese and Art, cultural exchange organisation, mentoring of students and staff, artwork and publications.

She was also the driving force behind student exchanges between the Sydney Japanese School, the sister school Yachiyo Shoin, and Bathurst’s sister city relationship with Okhuma. She has been able to secure numerous grants over the years which have been used to add Japanese resources to both All Saints’ and Bathurst’s libraries as well as funds to build the Japanese Education Centre

which is now the Junior School Office, renamed The Fudeko Reekie Language Centre.

As well as organising cultural exchanges for All Saints’ students and the Bathurst Community, Fudeko has contributed to Japanese Education through her many publications for both Primary and Secondary students of Japanese. These texts are widely used in NSW schools, and she has often been a presenter at the Association of Independent Schools and Japanese Language Teacher’s Conferences. Fudeko also organised tours to Japan for Sister City exchanges and the All Saints’ Tour of Japan in 2006.

In her teaching, Fudeko worked hard to help her students benefit and enjoy the Japanese Cultural Environment by holding Japanese Open Days, Children’s Day, tutoring in Ikebana, silk painting, ink painting in Art and Artists’ Week as well as encouraging some of her students to go on student exchange or further study in Japan on a Gap year.

Over the years, many of her students achieved excellent results in the HSC, which they attribute to her excellent teaching and enthusiasm. continued page 13

prestigious award being the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun, the Emperor’s Honour Roll-Shunjujokun (Spring and Autumn Award). These awards are well deserved by a remarkable lady who has had such a significant impact on the life of the College and Bathurst.

Fudeko is now ‘retired’ from teaching but still very active in Bathurst with the U3A, gardening, as a grandparent, tending her bonsai, artwork and writing. In 2015 she wrote her memoir in Japanese and English, ‘A Wonderful Life’, reflecting a truly wonderful life she continues to live!

Early on in her time here at the school, All Saints’ was seen as ‘setting the pace’ for other schools in NSW and Mr Bob Bickerdike, the Head at the time, described Japanese Studies as ‘one of the jewels in our crown’.

Fudeko is a lady of many talents and interests and evidence of her artistic ability can be seen in various places around the school, in Bathurst and our past publications. She has been involved in the All Saints’ College Art Show every year and has had many of her artworks hung at various exhibitions. Her other talents are quite diverse -she plays a mean game of table tennis and has won many town competitions, is a keen gardener and a bonsai expert, as well as a jujitsu student.

Scots All Saints College students have had a great start to the year, showing wonderful progress and enthusiasm in their Speech & Drama lessons throughout Term 1.

CALENDAR DATES

Students have been working on many activities in class, progressing their sounds, articulation, vocal projection and expression.

Many students have started preparing for the IMEB Speech & Drama Examination program, which will be held later in the year. A number of students are also working hard memorising their pieces for the Bathurst Eisteddfod, which will be held in September.

It has been wonderful to see the children develop their creative and imaginative skills each week and build on their skills.

Well done to all students on a great Term 1!
