The next few weekends will provide wonderful opportunities to ‘show off’ our new college to the wider community. I encourage all parents and students to invite work colleagues, family and friends to be a part of these events. This weekend we are hosting ‘Relay for Life’ on the All Saints Campus and the Old Boys annual cricket fixture against the First and Second XI on Scots Campus. Both the All Saints and Scots Old Boys will field teams with matches commencing at 10:00 am on Sunday.

The Highland Gathering is on the following weekend on Sunday 24 March. This is a whole College event held in March each year on the Scots Campus with the Spring Fair similar but different to be held on the All Saints Campus in September each year. Both occasions are showcase events for our wider community providing opportunities to participate in the life of our College, to see our students, parents and staff in action and to envision the possibility of joining our College more permanently. In addition, the funds raised are crucial for improving the educational offerings and facilities of the College. I strongly encourage all parents to commit to this event and to support the dedicated team who spend months in preparation for the day.

The President of the Scots All Saints P & F, Mr Lindsay Wilde, has written to all parents with a list of donation items required and assistance needed to run the event. I encourage all parents to assist the College on the day or in the days leading in. continued page 2

The major events at the Highland Gathering include a NSW Pipe Band Competition, Equestrian, Show jumping, Highland Dancing and other dancing displays, Strongman Competition, games for the children and lots of stalls for the adults to enjoy along with great cafes and food.

Our Senior Music and Drama students have been working very hard on the College Musical, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, which will be held at BMEC on 28, 29 & 30 March. Tickets are on sale and I encourage everyone to make a real effort to attend this wonderful production.

The Senior School enjoyed a scene on Assembly this week and the show promises to be an outstanding production.

Highland Gathering Sunday 24 March School Stalls Jobs Call Out Our first all College major P&F fundraiser, The Highland Gathering, is fast approaching and we’re looking for the help of parents, students and staff to help to make it happen. You will soon see the student rosters for the school stalls and we need parents to help with them but we also have some important jobs that need to be done to keep everyone safe and organised.

Now is the time to get involved, have some fun, and meet some other parents and connect with our College community.

Job HG Sunday: We need a couple of people to follow our Risk Assessment procedure and walk the grounds on Sunday morning to identify any safety issues and help resolve them.

Collate the applications, mark out the sites. and welcome and direct the stall holders from 7am Sunday morning.

21 Thursday: 16:00 Putting up the Marquees and the Big Tent, Dance floor and stalls 21 Thursday: 17:00 Collect the castle from the Band shed and take it to the oval. Flatbed trucks welcome.

22 Friday: from 08:00 Build the castle. Ladies and gentlemen are welcome. It is always fun and challenging putting the castle up. Luckily, we have Scott who knows where all the pieces go. The Dance floor and other odds and ends 23 Saturday: Bunting, Parking and Furniture set up and all the last minute odds and ends.

Sunday 16:00 Pull the castle down. What takes We are looking to get a craft corner going to keep little hands and minds occupied while the pipes ring out. Skills with Glue and Scissors required.

11:30 to 1:30 and then 1:30 to 4:30 For the safety of Horses, Riders and Drivers we need some folk to attend the gate and driveway to ensure approved cars* and horses move safely past one another. These teams will follow on from the O’Connell RFS who are working there from 7:30 to 11:30. *Coaches, Disabled Patrons, Stall Holders and Classic Cars, Journalists.

Campus Assembly This Friday a Campus Assembly will be held on the Chapel Lawn starting at 9:00 am. Regular awards will continue to be handed out at this assembly. Everyone is welcome.

CIS Swimming Congratulations to all our swimmers who swam at the HICES Carnival last Wednesday. Harry Thorne, Ignacio Knight and Chontelle Burgess from the Junior School had a very successful campaign and will now attend the CIS Carnival next Wednesday along with Ava Purvis and Ruby Thorne from the Middle School. We wish them all well.

Summer Sport Under 9s, 10 White and 12s will play their final cricket games of the season this Saturday. There will be no training for these teams next week. Under 7s and Under 10s Blue will have their final game on 23 March.

These three teams will continue to train next week.

Winter Sport We’re in the process of finalising winter sport teams and information relating to registration will be sent home shortly. Just a reminder that if the College offers a sport students should be playing that sport for the school. This helps foster community and team spirit.

Stage 2 Camp Our Stage 2 students are looking forward to their camp on Monday. The bus leaves at 8:00 am from the front of Esrom House and students should be finalising what they need to take away with them. It’s sure to be an action packed three days and I’m sure many new friendships will be forged and lasting memories formed.

I can’t wait!

Harmony Day Harmony Day is held each year on 21 March. It’s a day to celebrate our cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Thank you to the many parents who have volunteered to provide a dish. You can bring the dish in at 3:00 pm or leave it with Belinda in the Junior School Office who can refrigerate it if needed. Please ensure your dishes are free of nuts or nut based products.

If you offered to provide an item from your country of origin and a brief written description outlining its name and purpose could you please leave that with Mrs Boshier in the Junior School Office by the end of this week. If you can place the item in a clearly labelled plastic bag with the item and description inside that would be greatly appreciated.

Students will take part in an activity where they learn about the significance of these items.

Highland Gathering I’d like to invite all Junior School families to attend the Highland Gathering to be held on the Scots Campus on Sunday 24 March. The Gathering is a wonderful community event and is always a great day.

Our highland dancers will perform throughout the day.

Junior School students need to wear their sport uniform to this event. This can be either their white polo or coloured house shirt.

Beauty and the Beast Junior School students will attend a rehearsal of Beauty and the Beast on Friday 29 March at 11:00 am. Further details will be forthcoming closer to the event.

Playground At our assembly last week, we talked about playground rules with the students. Students are not to play on equipment after school hours unless they are supervised by parents.

Middle School Mr Chris Jackman Head of All Saints Campus / Director of Middle School

We are already past the half way point of Term One and, with an action packed schedule ahead, I think the next five weeks will go just as quickly.

He has been pleased with the high level of interest shown by the students and is preparing his schedule for lessons.

Our Year 7 students had a wonderful experience on their Outdoor Education camp last week to Wiseman’s Ferry. They abseiled, built rafts and paddled them up the river, canoed, hiked, went on a zip line, tried their hand at archery and camped in tents. Mr Gates and I visited the campers on the Thursday and were impressed by the way they were working together to achieve their various goals. There were many smiling faces especially when they were on the large inflatable water park obstacle course. I would like to thank Mr Stocks, Mrs Pearce, Mrs Simcock, Mr Hunter and Miss Tomlinson for attending the camp with the students.

I encourage students to make the most of the many learning opportunities on offer in the Middle School. To be engaged, children need to be challenged and I love seeing the students extending themselves out of their comfort zone when trying activities that are new to them.

This week our teams participated in Round 2 of the Heads of Independent Co-Educational Schools (HICES) Debating Competition which was hosted by Blue Mountains Grammar School.

I encourage them to keep up their great work and continue to prepare well for their next event.

The lunch time water polo competition was a resounding success and Mrs Nelson was overwhelmed by the number of teams that were entered into both the Year 5-6 and the Year 7-8 competitions. I congratulate all of the students who participated and enjoyed the friendly rivalry.

Mr Gill Mackenzie has been in the Middle School over the last week providing students with a taste of what Pipes and Drums are all about.

Many thanks to the staff and students who helped make our inaugural Year 7-12 Swimming Carnival such a success. The new House t-shirts and swimming caps created a fabulous kaleidoscope of colour and a tremendous sense of community was present throughout the day. Year 11 Biologists become friendly with Mangrove locals On Wednesday 13 February, 26 Scots All Saints Biology students had an early start and bus trip to Homebush Bay and the Badu mangroves. On arrival our students were met by Ken, our guide of 13 years experience. Students were trained in techniques used to measure factors affecting the mangrove and crab populations, and the influence of tidal inundation on salt marsh, all the while, armed with mosquito repellent and Attenborough-like attitude.

The study also provided students with a taste of the techniques used to monitor estuarine ecosystems and perhaps, insight into ways of making these systems sustainable. Ken was an excellent instructor, challenging the students’ understanding and skill. We were his first class after the vacation and he was really impressed by the diligence of our students, so much so that he insisted they be taken to the ice cream shop on the drive home! This fieldwork served as an excellent stepping stone for the Biology course Depth Study and Assessment.

Our thanks go to Mrs Kristy Knight, laboratory technician, for accompanying us on this rather busy excursion. However, most of all, I would like to thank the students for their courteous and conscientious attitude.

Winter Sport – playing for the College We remind students and families, that if Scots All Saints College offers a sport that your child would like to play, it is a requirement that the student plays for the College in the first instance before they play for another club or team. The exception to this is if the College cannot field a team as a result of insufficient numbers. In this case students will be asked to play for another club. Please also note that students can play for the College in their chosen sport and also for a representative team should they gain selection.

We appreciate your support on this issue. If you need further clarification, please contact Mrs Nelson (Years K to 8) or Mr Gardner (Years 9 to 12).

Summer Sport/Winter Sport Transition Information At this time of the term we are in transition from our summer sport season to our winter sport season. Many of our summer sports have ended or are coming to an end in the next few weeks.

We draw to your attention to information regarding this transition period below. We are working on our team lists and coaching plans and hope to have these distributed in the next two weeks. We will also have information regarding the season and registration procedures.

Junior and Middle School Winter Sport The final Kindergarten to Year 6 tennis lessons will be on Monday 18 March.

The final Year 7 ‘Introduction to Sport’ session will be on Thursday 21 March.

Junior (Years 4 to Year 7) basketball teams will have their final training session on Tuesday 2 April.

There will be no sports training for Years 7 and 8 students (apart from junior basketballers) on Tuesday 19 March following the Inter-House Cross-Country carnival (on the Scots Campus – transport to and from will be provided).

Our Learn to Swim and Junior Dolphins squad on either a Monday or a Wednesday afternoon will finish in week 8 (18 or 20 March).

Squad training sessions for Rugby, Soccer, Netball and Hockey will be held with the MIC’s of the sport and other key coaches at the following times whilst teams are being finalized.

These squad training sessions will begin in Week 9 of Term 1.

Year 7 and 8 students will train on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 3:35 pm – 4:45 pm Year 5 and 6 students will train on Tuesday afternoons 3:35 pm – 4:45 pm Year 3 and 4 students will train on Wednesday afternoons 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 students are not required for squad training.

Team training for all winter sport teams will begin formally with all coaches Term 2, Week 1.

Senior School Sport Senior School (Years 9 - 12) netball teams have grading trials this Saturday (16 March) with externally appointed selectors. For those girls who are unable to attend please be aware that final selection trials for netball teams will occur on Thursday 21 March.

Pre-season Rugby fitness sessions have commenced. They are on Monday mornings from 7.00 am. All Year 9 to Year 12 boys are invited to attend.

All summer sports finish training this Thursday 14 March.

Basketball teams that make finals will be encouraged to continue training sessions in the mornings. Please note that the Swimming squads (morning group and after 5.00 pm group) will conclude on Thursday 21 March.

The Year 7 - Year 12 Inter-House Cross Country will be held on Tuesday 19 March with races for Middle School students starting after lunch and finishing by 3.00 pm and Senior School races starting from 3.00 pm and going through until approximately 4.30 pm.

Rugby and netball squad training will commence for all rugby boys (Years 9 - 12) on Thursday 21 March.

Arrangements are currently being made for hockey, football (soccer) and fitness and students will be notified through the daily notices.

Rugby Skills Day (Years 7 - 12) – this is going to occur on Saturday 23 March. We apologize for the clash that this presents to the boys in the cattle team and the Blayney Show. We are working with NSW Waratahs and other rugby specialist coaches to run other rugby skills sessions prior to the end of the term.

Old Boys Cricket We look forward to the inaugural Scots All Saints College Old Boys vs the 1st and 2nd XI cricket matches this Sunday 17 March. A final request for any Old Boys from All Saints or Scots to contact Greg Radford (gjradford@ bigpond.com) to see if they can get a game or even come along and help with umpiring or just watch. The matches will be held on the Scots Campus this year with games commencing at 10.00 am. Spectators are most welcome.

Disney’s Beauty and The Beast comes to Bathurst More than 60 Senior and Middle School students from Scots All Saints College will take to the stage to present Disney’s classic musical, Beauty and The Beast at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre (BMEC) on 28, 29 and 30 March, 2019.

Dress rehearsals continued this week at the Performing Arts Centre on Scots campus as students prepare to delight the regional community with their musical, acting and singing talents.

Swimmers shine at HICES swimming carnival Scots All Saints College sent its first ever representative swimming team to the HICES swimming carnival recently.

The 24-strong team represented our school with maturity, determination and cheerfulness and were wonderful ambassadors, offering so much in and out of the pool.

The HICES carnival attracts 15 co-educational Independent Schools from across Sydney, the Central Coast, Snowy Mountains and of course our friends in the Western Associated schools.

Scots All Saints was placed in Division One and while our school is a very healthy size, it is still the smallest of these schools.

This made it all the more exciting when the final point score was announced for the percentage shield and Scots All Saints College was crowned the winning school!

Swim captains Ava Purvis and Zephir Valsain, resplendent in their new SASC sports uniform, collected the shield on behalf of their proud team mates.

Special mention must go to Ruby Thorne, Chontelle Burgess, Iggy Knight and Harry Thorne who recorded not only the fastest heat for their races but were also the fastest swimmer overall in their age group in one or more events – an outstanding achievement!

Ava Purvis also deserves a mention for qualifying third overall for the 12 years freestyle.

Ava, Ruby, Harry, Chontelle and Iggy will now represent Scots All Saints College and HICES at the NSWCIS carnival and we wish them the best of luck.

It should be noted that every swimmer in the team contributed to our fantastic performance at HICES so congratulations to all.

Make a difference at Relay for Life In what will be the 20th edition, this year’s Bathurst Relay for Life will see fundraisers walk through the night to raise money for cancer this weekend.

Held on Watson Oval at All Saints Campus, Relay for Life raises money for cancer research and the support of patients and programs to help prevent cancer.

Cancer Council Western NSW community relations coordinator Katherine Bodiczky said numbers are lower than last year, but expects them to pick up on the day.

“We’re a bit lower than last year, but Bathurst being a last minute community, we’re expecting more to sign up on the day,” she said.

“We had over 500 registered last year, but we did get 60 sign up on the day.”

There are currently 344 participants registered, including 34 survivors and carers.

There are also 36 teams registered, but not all participants will belong to a team.

The target goal for 2019 is to raise $80,000 but only $22,341.91 had been raised as of Monday morning.

Ms Bodiczky is hopeful that the event will raise at least $50,000.

Relay for Life will start at midday on Saturday, 16 March 16, and will run to 9:00 am on Sunday, 17 March.

It’s not too late to register, with registrations still being accepted on www.cancercouncil.org. au.

Otherwise, registrations can be taken on the day.

An estimated $65,000 was raised during last year’s event, which was also held at the All Saints Campus.
