Parents’ Party Under the Stars It was a wonderful, relaxed evening at the first parents’ social event of 2020 last Saturday night. Denise and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversations with many parents from across the College as we shared local cool climate wines and a delicious menu prepared by our catering staff. The weather was perfect and the Karralee garden was beautifully decorated creating a terrific atmosphere for our ‘get to know you’ welcome event. Feedback has been 110% positive and we are thrilled everyone who attended had a great time. The College plans to work collaboratively with the P&F to host similar events in the future. Thank you to the P&F event organising committee, together with College staff for their efforts in delivering such a successful College community event. Photos from the night can be found on page 10.

Sporting Achievements We have so many talented young sportspeople at our College. I would like to recognise a number of students from across the College who have represented Scots All Saints in various sporting teams and pursuits.

Earlier this week, at the WAS (Western Associated Schools) Hockey trials in Orange, six of our girls were selected to be part of the WAS opens hockey team – Bridget Ellis (Year 12), Lily Kable (Year 8), Callie Molkentin (Year 11), Ellie Moorhead (Year 10), Clare Mawhood (Year 10). Belinda Kidd (Year 11) was selected as a shadow player. We wish these students all the best as they prepare for the AICES (Association of Independent Co-Educational Schools) NSW carnival next Tuesday, 10 March. A special mention to Lily Kable (Year 8) who was also recently selected in the NSW U15s A team.

The AICES Girls Basketball championships were held on Tuesday with representatives Callie Molkentin (Year 11), Phoebe Moller (Year 10) selected.

The ISA Girls Touch Football Opens and Juniors competed at St Paul’s Grammar School in Cranebrook, Sydney. It was pleasing to hear the Senior A and Senior B, Junior A and Junior B teams all made semis. Senior A's went down 4-2 to KWS and the Senior B's lost 6-3 to Barker in the semifinals. Impressive wins saw the Junior A and B both make the grand finals - where Junior B - went down narrowly to St Andrews Cathedral School 3-1. Congratulations to the Junior As who took the win 7-4 against Oxley College bringing home the inaugural ISA Girls Touch Football Championship shield!

Students ensured it had a safe trip to Bathurst.

Congratulations to all of these students and those who are representing Scots All Saints with tremendous pride and sporting excellence on and off the field. And for those competing in their Summer sport grand finals this weekend, we will all be cheering you on! Go Lions!

Tremendous success for Tyler Many of you may not realise we have a cycling champion amongst us here at Scots All Saints. Tyler Puzicha, Year 10, has just completed her NSW State Championships campaign where she won her 500m Individual Time Trial. She qualified fastest in the 200m fly which seeded her for the Sprints. She won every round of her Sprints coming away with the State Championship. She won her Keiran heats and final. She has been automatically selected in the NSW State Team to compete in the National Junior Track Championships in a few weeks’ time. To put this in perspective, her mum tells me her times this weekend as a Junior were faster than the U19 and Elite women’s times at their State championships last week. Tyler also holds two Australian records since 2018-2019 making her the fastest Junior Girl in Australia. Well done to Tyler. We look forward to watching on as she progresses to the National Championships and wish her all the best.

Swimming Carnivals Update Our Junior WAS Swimming Team (Years 3-8) competed at Kinross Wolaroi (KWS) in Orange yesterday. The carnival was an excellent opportunity to catch up with our friends from KWS, OAGS, MAGS, BMGS. Our team of 26 students demonstrated finesse in the water with excellent performances from the senior members of the team. Our junior swimmers showed terrific determination. They will all go on to compete at HICES next Monday, 9 March.

Our Senior Swimming Carnival (Years 7-12) was a very colourful affair held last Friday at the Bathurst Manning Aquatic Centre. It was great to see most of our students competing to represent their Sporting House. The Scots All Saints College senior swimming representatives will now compete at the ISA (Independent Sporting Association) Carnival at Homebush next Wednesday, 11 March.

We wish our swimming teams all the best.

What is your role at Scots All Saints College?

Agriculture and Business Studies Teacher.

What attracted you to our College?

Alister Meek HSIE/Agriculture/Tech Teacher

I completed one of my teaching placements at Scots All Saints College late last year and really enjoyed the whole experience. I had also met some of the College’s students at agricultural shows in the past and was impressed by the way they conducted themselves and represented their school.

What was your first job and what did it teach you?

My first job was at Blayney CRT (rural supplies store) in the afternoons after school, which taught me valuable peopleskills as well as how to use a broom.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I’m currently renovating the house I live in, which I’m enjoying as I’m always learning something new and it gives me an excuse to catch-up with my 'tradie' friends when they come to fix the things that I break. I’m also a pretty keen gardener.

What are some exciting things happening in agriculture in 2020?

What’s your favourite sport and who do you support?

Who is an inspirational leader you admire?

I’m a big ice hockey fan from my time spent living in Canada, and my team is the Toronto Maple Leafs. I also love watching Australia compete in any sport so I’m looking forward to the Olympics this year.

Dick Smith, as he’s a self-made man who has used his success and influence to support a huge number of environmental and charitable causes.

Thanks to those teachers and students who have made me feel welcome so far, and I look forward to meeting the rest of the SASC community in the future.

Student Wellbeing Mr Tom van Gend Head of Student Wellbeing K-12

House Identity The vast amount of work done by staff and students last year in the wellbeing area has seen the 2020 school year commence well beyond where we were at the beginning of last year.

The focus for 2020 is therefore to review and refine established processes and programs, and to supplement these with other initiatives that we hope will provide an increasingly positive school experience for our students.

The House system is important within the College. Pastoral care at the college is organised based on student academic years; this provides for student wellbeing programs that are both targeted and age-appropriate for the recipients.

In contrast, House activities provide opportunities for students to come together across year groups to form friendships and to participate co-operatively in organised activities.

Recent examples of this were the highly successful Inter-House Swimming Carnivals.

During 2020 we hope to build this spirit of House identity so that it permeates more activities than the traditional sporting carnivals.

One focus this term has been to develop the identities of each of the five Houses within the college.

Students may have read the page within their diaries that provide some biographical information about Brian Booth, Edith Cowan, Betty Cuthbert, Sir Edward Dunlop and Douglas Mawson. The Year 12 House Captains spent some of their recent vacation time conducting deeper research into each of these outstanding Australians. They also considered the character strengths that assisted each person in their accomplishments.

These strengths have become the central theme of each House’s motto.

In coming issues of The Roar, the identities of each House will be presented to raise awareness in our college community.

Brainstorm Productions – Wednesday 25 March On Wednesday, 25 March 2020 Brainstorm Productions will be presenting their student wellbeing program 'The H Team' to students in Kindergarten to Year 4. This presentation will commence at 12 noon in the Bickerdike Centre.

'The H Team' fosters teamwork, impulse control, and resilience, to create healthy and harmonious school communities.

Brainstorm Productions will present 'The Flipside' to students in Year 5 to Year 8 commencing at 2:00 pm on the same day in the Bickerdike Centre. 'The Flipside' challenges students' perspectives on what's humorous, toxic, private, humiliating, informative, safe or appropriate online. The performance encourages them to think critically about their online values and behaviour, and provides strategies for respectful communication.

Details relating to each of these important presentations have been distributed to parents via CareMonkey.

Please note that arrangements have been put in place to transport Middle School students involved in the musical 'Annie' from BMEC to the All Saints Campus to attend the presentation. At the conclusion of the presentation they will be transported back to BMEC to resume rehearsals.

Strength and Conditioning Our strength and conditioning groups have continued to enjoy themselves with healthy numbers at each of the sessions. The students are certainly feeling the benefits with rapid improvements in their fitness levels. We hope that the students continue to push through the first few weeks as they develop their strength and fitness levels. This week we add a Year 7/8 group to the Senior Campus on Friday mornings under the direction of our Strength and Conditioning Coach Luke Newman. In coming weeks we will be adding an enthusiastic group of Middle School students to sessions at the Middle and Junior School Campus under the direction of Mr Walsh.

Rural Fire Service Cadets (RFS) Our RFS students have been learning the procedures and protocols in their RFS recruit training. The students rely heavily on good team work and strong communication with the firefighting drills.

They have been learning how to pump the water from the truck, use a portable pump, bowl out the hoses, fix all the connections and squirt the water.

It is great to see their development in this program. Well done students.

Winter Sport Choices We thank the majority of students for completing the Winter sport survey. Disappointingly we have had to chase some students to get the survey completed. We are now working with the Heads of Sport to compile sport lists and plan coaches and teams. Information letters for each winter sport activity will be distributed to parents in the coming weeks.

ISA Cricket Representative The last week was a big week for Ben Cant (Year 12) representing the College in the ISA 1st XI cricket team with matches against CAS (Combined Associated Schools), GPS (Greater Public Schools) and ASC (Associated Southern Colleges - Canberra). The team was very successful winning a close match against CAS (Sunday 23 Feb), where Ben played a crucial role taking 3 wickets and scoring a rapid fire 25 to help the team to victory. Against GPS (Wednesday 26 Feb), Ben again showed his class with 33 runs and 1 wicket. Unfortunately, the team lost the match to the a very talented GPS team. In the 3rd game in 8 days (Sunday 1 March) the ISA boys gave the ASC team a lesson in batting on the picturesque Bradman Oval in Bowral - Ben again demonstrated great skill with the bat scoring 36 runs and tidy bowling figures. We congratulate Ben on his outstanding representation of ISA and of the College. We also thank Ben for his dedication to cricket at the College and to the wonderful leadership that he has demonstrated. Well done Ben!

Mini Swim Meet On Friday 21 February a Mini Swim Meet was held at the Senior Campus pool. We combined many of our senior swimming squad members with swimmers from the Titanium swimming club that also uses the Scots Campus pool. It was a great opportunity for many of our students to get some practice prior to the Inter House carnival and a good chance to meet many of the young Titanium swimmers. We thank the students for supporting the meet and the staff that assisted with running the carnival.

This Friday we are inviting the Junior and Senior School Swimming teams to another Mini Swim meet for some more practice prior to the HICES and ISA swimming carnivals. Races will start from 4:30 pm at the Scots Campus pool.

All swimming team members are encouraged to attend.

Waste free recess/lunch After the success of last year’s Waste Free Recess where students and families reduced waste by 75%, students from All Saints Campus are now looking forward to participating in a Waste Free Recess and Lunch this year.

A Waste Free Day is planned for each term. Term 1 will be Tuesday 10 March. Pack snacks and lunch in re-usable containers, use cloth napkins or beeswax wraps to cover your food.

Grab a drink bottle or keep cup. Waste free can be healthier and more affordable saving money on unnecessary packaging.

12 Years Water Polo wins a Bronze medal

The Scots All Saints College 12 Years Water Polo team had terrific success at the WPNSW 12 Years festival held in Orange over the weekend.

Our students have participated in 6 Water Polo clinics coached by former Olympian Nikita Williams throughout Terms 4 and 1.

In this time their skills and game concepts have flourished. There were ten mixed teams participating in the festival over the weekend. After some successful round games, the SASC team played in an exciting Bronze medal match.

SASC players admirably stepped up to the challenge claiming victory in that game, walking away with the Bronze medal.

Art After School Workshops Middle school students are loving the Art After School workshops with local artists Fiona Howle and Jock Alexander. Every Wednesday afternoon from 3:30 students are engaged for an hour of creative and skills based art making. Learning refined drawing and paint techniques as well as creative and imaginative material practice.

Speech & Drama Term 1 Update The Speech & Drama students have had a great start to 2020 developing their skills and progressing with their performances.

This term, students have been working on projection, articulation, facial expression and experiencing all aspects of drama in classes.

Some students are currently preparing for the Gulgong Eisteddfod which will be held at the end of May. Students have also been working on 2020 Eisteddfod pieces and starting on the IMEB exam programs. Well done to all students on great progress this term!

A big congratulations to the following students who have had some exciting news this term: Recently, Sybilla Chapman (Year 5) performed in the Banjo Patterson

Australian Poetry Competition in Orange and was awarded 1st prize in the Primary student class. Sybilla wrote and performed her own Australian poem and was very excited to come away with the Helen Locke Memorial Prize along with a $200 cash prize. This was the second year running Sybilla has won this competition. Fantastic work, Sybilla!

Congratulations to Natalia Burgess (Year 12) who was recently awarded The Young Citizen of the Year Award for 2020 for her community service work and dedication. She was also a top 3 finalist in the Youth Arts Awards for speech and drama.

Natalia was presented with both awards at the recent Australia Day Celebrations in Bathurst. This is a huge achievement! Well done, Natalia!

Senior HICES Debating Round One Monday 24 February saw the Scots campus play host to Round One of the Senior and Open division of the HICES Debating Competition.

The competition is an excellent opportunity for students regardless of experience, to test their mental mettle through a series of impromptu debates.

Scots All Saints College has a long history across both campuses of distinguished participation in the competition and this looks set to continue in 2020. Students from Kinross Wolaroi School in Orange, Blue Mountains Grammar School in Wentworth Falls and Macquarie Anglican Grammar School in Dubbo travelled to the Scots campus to contest the opening round with both skill and enthusiasm.

The Senior round saw the teams of Xavier Adams, Harrex Upston, Jessica Mills and Jamie Healey (Year 9) and Gabrielle Toby, Joseph O’Neill, David Hardie and Jack Dickenson (Year 10) debate the topic “That we should spend more on managing our environment than on our defence force”. Our Year 9 team, with the benefit of experience, were able to craft a convincing case and secure the victory over their opposition from Kinross Wolaroi School. Our Year 10 team, featuring some newer players, found the experience as a newly formed teamed invaluable and are keen to learn from the loss they sustained to Macquarie Anglican Grammar School as they head into Round Two. Our Open teams consisting of Austin Markwick, Simi Atluri,

Jonah Siede and George Butler and Keeran Rajkumar, Jessica Settree, Isobelle Sotter and Isaac Cove tackled opposition from Macquarie Anglican Grammar and Blue Mountains Grammar respectively on the topic “That 5G should not be offered until it can be rolled out simultaneously nationwide.”

Both teams were efficient in their execution, recording a victory for Round One. We look forward with great anticipation to Round Two which will be held at Blue Mountains Grammar School in March.
