A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks Modern schools … old issues in new forms! A few weeks ago I wrote about the broader work which schools do … we are not just about ‘reading and writing’ and ‘arithmetic’. Over the past few months a number of issues have emerged in our communities which are of concern for the health of our young people. One such issue is ‘vaping’. Confused by the term? Just ask a teenager or catch one of the many Youtube clips through a Google search. Twenty years ago we were still teaching children and the community of the significant health risks of cigarette smoking, thankfully most people quit and very few young people have taken it up. Fast forward to today and the E-cigarette has landed with enormous claims about its safety. No doubt you have seen some of these in action as a person inhales a large cloud of ‘vapour’. I suspect that in the near future there will be even greater restrictions placed with the sale and access of these E-cigarettes and the Vapes that go with them. So now we address this emerging issue, if as researchers say, the uptake is increasing? The answer is education, both from home and school. Let’s understand what this is, how and where it is available from and the health impacts. Central West da Vinci Decathlon Scots All Saints College is hosting the Central West da Vinci Decathlon on:

The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Students compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: engineering, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and legacy.
Students who excel in one or more of these fields are asked to contact Mr Cant (Years 5-8) , Mrs O’Neill (Years 9-11) or Mrs Horsborough (Years 9-11) to find out more information and to register your interest in participating.

Unfortunately the WAS Swimming Carnival for our Year 2–6 swimmers has been cancelled for 2021, but the HICES Carnival is scheduled to take place on 8 March. We’ll be sending out information to parents in the coming days.

All Things Sport Grab a plate because we’re serving up a COVID-safe buffet of sporting action this week. Let’s start by tipping our hats to these three legends who have been out and about, making a name for themselves (and our College!) with some awesome performances. Sian Campbell backed up from leading Team Dunlop at last Wednesday’s swimming carnival to represent the College at the CIS Primary School Basketball trials, making it all the way to the final 18 players. Cuthbert House Captain, Izaak Scott, took to the court at the CIS Primary School tennis trials on Monday alongside some of the best junior talent in the state. Izaak’s tennis is on the up after a big summer on the practice court and we’re sure to see some great results just around the corner. Watch this space. Finally, Harry Thorne attended the NSW Country Championships over the weekend. To make a long story short – he nailed it. Silver in the 11 Years 100m butterfly. Silver in the 11 Years 100m breaststroke and finalist in the 11 Years 50m butterfly. To top it off, all results were personal best times. Swimming Just as we’ve towelled off from our carnivals last week we’re back in the pool. This Friday our top swimmers from Year 7–12 are off to Kinross Wolaroi School in Orange to compete in the WAS Swimming Carnival. Stay tuned for some great results. Netball trials are coming up at our Middle School over the next couple of weeks. Our Year 7–8 netballers will hit the court on Thursday 4 March during Active Afternoons. While our Year 5–6 students will have their trial on Thursday 11 March. Summer Sports Photos If you’re in our Senior School and have been playing Cricket, Touch, Tennis or Basketball this summer, get ready to say “cheeeeeeese”. We’ll be taking team photos on Thursday 11 March during Active Afternoons. We’ll let students know the uniform requirements for each sport closer to the date. Monday Night Touch Football We have one more round of Touch Football before finals time. Here are a couple of match reports from our esteemed coaches: It was a warm afternoon for touch football this Monday. The Pegasus started off slower than usual and the Divas capitalised on this with two early tries. This seemed to awaken the team who replied with two tries shortly after. Midway through the game the scores were going one for one with the score line tied at four. The teams then seemed to hold each other out for a good 10 minutes with both teams looking for an edge. The advantage fell the Divas way with five minutes to go when a player dived at the line to score. The Pegasus did not give up and had many attempts at the Divas try line but their defense held out. The game finished 5-4 in favour of The Divas. Our player of the match goes to Sophia Burke. Mr Chris Walsh The Megallanics won 19-1 in a game which exemplified the power of simple and efficient football. In such a high scoring game every player was a candidate for player of the match but Hannah Jonker stood out as she stuck to the basics, was very consistent in defence and got on the score sheet with a runaway try. Mr Lachlan Batley Let’s finish off with maybe the most exciting news of the week. It didn’t rain on Saturday! Our ISA tennis, ISA touch and local cricket teams were all able to get out there and do their thing – it almost felt like normal. Have a great weekend.

UOW Discovery Day Last week a wonderful group of Year 12 students capitlised on an opportunity to travel down to the University of Wollongong’s Discovery Day. This subsidised trip provided a chance for our intrepid adventurers to step out of their comfort zones and experience life as a Uni student. We arrived in the afternoon, were settled into our accommodation. We enjoyed a Mexican dinner before heading off to Ten Pin Bowling followed by a dessert night cap at Cold Rock Ice Creamery. The next day was a full day of lectures. Our students pre-registered for different lectures according to their personal interests. Students attended lectures ranging from engineering to teaching, pre-med to linguistics, law to cyber security, digital and social media to business. It was a fantastic day, that had a tangible impact for some of our students. Days like these are never a waste of time, when you can actually visualize yourself somewhere; you then have a focus and something to work towards. A very big thank you to Duane Bailey for accompanying us and congratulations to all the students who attended. You took time out of your busy schedule and have started gathering information to what possibly could be next for you!
Year 12 - Regional University Roadshow The Regional University Roadshow will be visiting Campus East on Tuesday 2 March. Representatives from the University of New England (UNE), Southern Cross, University of Newcastle (UON) and Charles Sturt University will attend. These representatives will provide information in regards to their own Universities, plus advice on the application process, scholarships, and living away from home. Year 12 Parents and Students – UAC ZOOM Presentation; “The ATAR and applying to University” Next Wednesday 3 March at 4:30 pm, you are invited to attend a Zoom meeting with our representative from UAC (University Admission Centre). UAC is the organisation that calculates the ATARs and administer the University admission process. The publication highlights trends in the Australian labour market and provides guidance about job search and the skills employers value. https://www.nationalskillscommission.gov.au/ australian-jobs-report USI – Unique Student Identifier About the Unique Student Identifier (USI) Every year, an estimated three million Australians build and sharpen their skills by undertaking nationally recognised training. From 1 January 2015, all students doing nationally recognised training need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This includes students doing Vocational Education Training (VET) in schools, TAFE, First Aid Certificates, White Card, Resposible Service of Alcohol (RSA), Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) and from 2021 University Entrance. A USI is a reference number made up of numbers and letters. Creating a USI is free. It creates a secure online record of your nationally recognised training that you can access anytime and anywhere, and it’s yours for life. The USI is linked to the National Vocational Education and Training (VET) Data Collection, and this means an individual’s nationally recognised training and qualifications gained anywhere in Australia, from different training organisations, will be kept all together. All students from Year 10 up should apply for this (we are doing this in Careers classes) and have for future reference – EG: Job applications Please go to http://www.usi.gov.au Careers Resources A good Careers resource for students and parents is 'Job Jump' – www.jobjump.com.au . We have a subscription to this site which provides current and state based relevant information. Watch this video to help gather your Uni preferences. From the archives
BEFORE THERE WAS A SCOTS A generation before there was a Scots School in Bathurst, Presbyterian education in the Central West was served by the Cooerwull Academy at Bowenfels. The Academy opened in 1882 and was the first Presbyterian school in New South Wales. Its founder was Andrew Brown, a Scotsman who was the first European settler in Lithgow, and used coal to develop Lithgow as an industrial centre. Brown used his fortune to open the Academy, that he named after a small blue flower that grew in the region that the local First Australians called Cooerwull. He also founded St Andrew’s College at Sydney University. The Academy’s first student was Leslie Lamrock, believed to be a relative of Adrian Lamrock, Principal of Scots 19982003. A notable teacher was Norwegian-born Carsten Borchgrevink, whose career as an Antarctic explorer is overshadowed in the English-speaking world by that of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Three Cooerwull boys had notable political careers: John Ross, William Fleming and Thomas Crawford QC. He donated some items from the Cooerwull Academy to Scots. John Bulkeley, also an old Cooerwullian, was appointed as a teacher to the then new Scots in 1946.

In 1916, the Cooerwull Academy was permanently closed. A large number of staff and some students had volunteered for military service in World War I, and the school could no longer function. After a period as a private residence, it was bought by the De La Salle Brothers in 1953 and resumed an educational career as La Salle College, which still operates. The Christian Brothers gave Andrew Brown’s family crest that had been on a tower at Cooerwull to Scots, and the Old Cooerwullians paid £70 to have it moved to The Scots School and installed above the entrance to Cooerwull House.

The book with the Academy crest is a poetry anthology awarded to Thomas Crawford for being first in Mathematics in 1896.

SPORT REPORTS It is that time of year again - the Premier’s Reading Challenge is about to start! Through the challenge, we aim to encourage a love of reading and enable students to experience the joys of quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.

COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe Dear Parents and Carers, You will have noticed that our weekly COVID-19 updates have become less frequent during Term 1. This is because COVID-19 has been relatively settled in NSW and it’s not our wish to burden you by providing the same information every week. We would however like to remind you of a few small things regarding our management of COVID-19 within the College. It is still the policy of the College that anyone who exhibits symptoms of COVID-19 be removed from school, tested and that they self-isolate until they return a negative test result. Negative test results should be forwarded to the Health Centre Felicity.Brown@ scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au. Additionally, we ask that parents and carers continue to stay off campuses unless dropping children to/picking up from the Preparatory School or picking up from After School Care. Parents and carers are however, welcome to attend the Uniform Shop as long as they sign in using the QR Code on the door. We are also currently working with the ISA regarding allowing parent spectators on campus for weekend sport, and hope to have a resolution on this within the next week. We will keep you updated regarding any changes. Please remember that any time that a parent comes on campus (except for attending the Preparatory School or After School Care) they are required to either sign in at reception or complete the QR code sign in that will be available at all activities and events. If you’re unwell please don’t come onto campus for any reason whatsoever.
