12 Hour Rowing Challenge!

Under the direction of our Chaplain, Rev. Bennett and the Senior School Social Justice Prefects, the 12-hour Rowing Challenge has been launched.

The Senior School Leaders have set a target of raising $10,000 to support both the Hope Care Café and Soup Kitchen at Kelso, which we support each week with meal preparation, serving and hosting, and the NSW Flood Relief Appeal.

Five teams based on our Sporting Houses of Mawson, Cuthbert, Booth, Dunlop and Cowan will seek sponsorship for this event. In seeking to raise funds our student leaders hope to focus on others in need, build House Spirit, encourage fitness, and have fun!

Please give generously when our students come calling for support. The 12-hour Indoor Rowing Challenge will be held on Sunday, 27 March at the College.

have been delighted with the enthusiastic participation of our students.

Our representative teams are selected from these carnivals, and we wish them every success as they head off to these championships in the next week or so.

I would like to achnowledge all the hard work of our Sports Administrator, Mr Wilkinson and his team, who have run four school carnivals over the last two weeks.

Year 7, 2023 Planning is already underway for 2023… Can you believe it? 2023 enrolments are well advanced, and places are filling quickly.

Our first ‘Try Day’ for Year 7 2023 will take place on Tuesday, 22 March 2022.

I am looking forward to meeting all the students for Year 7 2023, along with any parents who would like to join us for breakfast at 8:00-8:45 am.

Formalities for the students begin at 9:00 am when registration takes place on the back oval in front of the Pavilion.

Signage will be in place to guide new parents to parking and registration.

Journeying Towards Easter – having a heart for others?

Dear Friends, Some of you may know that the Church celebrates Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday this week.

Historically, for 2000 years, Christians have given up food and fasted for 40 days as they acknowledge the generous love of God, who humbled himself in the form of a man, died on the cross for our sins and created an opportunity for eternal life. With this in mind, I am hoping that our school community can join in and embrace God’s generous nature. There are several endeavours underway at Scots All Saints – some of which you can pray for and some of which you can support in practical ways.

The cost to cook these meals is around $125, so I have set up a fundraiser to contribute to these meals and also to raise money for those who have lost their homes in the recent floods in northern NSW. On Sunday, 27 March, I am organising a physical fundraising challenge – to row (on the rowing erg) for 12 hours non-stop. The House Captains from Booth, Dunlop, Cowan, Cuthbert and Mawson are organising students from Years 9 to 12 to row at different stages from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm on 27 March. Each house is also trying to raise $2000 each.

Our end goal is to raise $10,000 – with $5,000 going to the Soup Kitchen meals and $5,000 going to the victims of the recent floods. Students who are participating shall be looking for sponsorship from either families or businesses.

Over the past three weeks, Year 12 students have served in Hope Care’s Soup Kitchen. Our hope is to continue this service throughout the year. There are two teams – a cooking team that prepares a meal between 7:30 am and 8:30 am. The second group of students then arrives at 11:30 am to serve lunch to around 20 less fortunate members of the Bathurst community who need a meal and some friendly company. This group of students also cleans up after the meal. This opportunity has greatly impacted many of the students involved, as they have had the opportunity to meet and care for others and listen to their stories. Our goal at Scots All Saints is to cement this service opportunity for our students.

The students and I would appreciate any support you can give them along this journey as they grow in their understanding and experience of serving others in need.

God is a generous God. Easter represents the breadth and length that God goes to for us. My hope is that we, as students, parents, families and as a school, may be inspired by the divine presence in our own lives so that we, too, can be a blessing to others.

College Core Values Over the last week, all of the Junior School classes have been exploring our Core Values of Respect, Faith, Compassion and Knowledge. They have created some wonderful classroom displays that demonstrate their understanding of these values and how they look in practice. These core values are what we stand for and are always discussed when speaking to students about behavior expectation and rights and responsibilities.

Broad-Brimmed hats, the application of sunscreen, use of shade during the hottest part of the days are three obvious measures that we have in place to protect the children from the sun. We value the support from our student’s parents and carers with this policy, especially when it comes to always checking that children have a hat at school.

Too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun causes sunburn, skin damage and increases the risk of skin cancer. Sun exposure during childhood and adolescence contributes significantly to the lifetime risk of developing skin cancer. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Skin cancers account for 80% of all new cancers diagnosed in Australia each year.

Melanoma is the most common cancer diagnosed for 15 – 29 year olds.

As we approach the mid-way mark of Term 1, students have settled into many of their units of work and are enjoying the many opportunities being offered to them. Each fortnight, I’ll endeavour to give you a little snapshot of learning across the Junior School.

English in the Junior School Each term, teachers plan a unit of work that relates to a text which is widely regarded as quality literature.

The study of a wide range of texts is central to the study of English and helps to foster a love language.

Whilst students read, listen to, and view a variety of texts that are appropriate to their needs, interests, and abilities, these units usually relate to a range of relevant textual concepts and processes. Here’s a little snapshot of what texts our students are focusing on this term. You might like to talk to your child about what they’ve been reading.

Public Speaking (Years 3-6) In Term 1, all Years 3-6 will prepare and deliver a speech as part of our Public Speaking Program.

Speeches will be prepared at home over a three-week period before students present them in front of their peers. NAPLAN Window In 2022, all schools will participate in NAPLAN online.

NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning at school. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the format of the online tests during a practice test window, which commences on Monday, 21 March. The window will allow staff to become familiar with the functionality of the online assessment platform and students to gain familiarity with the test format, functions and tools of the online tests in a test environment. NAPLAN will be held for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 from the 10- 20 May.

Mr Jackman and myself in setting goals and identifying areas for professional growth for the year ahead. Each teacher identifies a range of goals including those that relate to school priorities. It’s all about continuing to refine our craft as educators. We believe that if we continue to do this, we will continue to have a significant effect on student learning and outcomes.

Using ICT in the Junior School Integrating ICT (Information and Communication Technology) is just one way we assist students to develop the knowledge, skills, understanding, attitudes and behaviours to assist them to live and work successfully in the future.

The integration of ICT capabilities in the Junior School is an essential component of our educational offering.

Students develop Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capability as they learn to use ICT effectively and appropriately to investigate, create and communicate.

ICT capability supports and enhances student learning across all areas of the curriculum. Our aim is for students to use ICT with confidence, care and consideration, understanding its possibilities, limitations and impact.

We’re currently reviewing how we can best integrate ICT capability across all areas of learning and will keep you updated.

Premier’s Reading Challenge The Premier's Reading Challenge has begun for 2022.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 are welcome to participate and read some exciting books. The students are very excited to start the challenge again!

Linking our Core Values to our actions Mr Jackman has set the Junior School a challenge; to incorporate our College values of Compassion, Respect, Faith and Knowledge into a classroom display. The challenge is stimulating some great conversations among the students about the meaning of the values and how they relate to our actions in the Junior School. Sharing our understanding of the core values helps our students acknowledge what is important at our school and promotes our school culture. When we delve into our school values, the students can see that we appreciate the whole student; their academic accomplishment and skills (knowledge); the way they treat each other, their teachers and visitors to our school (respect and compassion), and of course, the role Christ has in our lives (faith). It is through these core values we are building a positive community at the College.

When I visited Year 3 this week, I could see through the illustrations of the students of the core values, they connect each value with the actions they see and model. The core values feed into our whole school pastoral care program, Bounce Back, and it was wonderful to see Year 3 recognising and working towards building positive character traits and positive behaviours and mindset. Great work Year 3!

Students signing In and Out We remind students and parents of the procedures for recording absences and for signing in late or signing out of school during the day. A full copy of the procedures can be found HERE. The area that we would like to draw attention to this week is where students are required to sign out during the day. If a student has to leave school early, a note or an email from their parents or guardians must be received. Emails are to be sent to the Senior Absences email address: seniorabsences@ scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au Students are to sign out at Mrs Norris’ or Mr Stock’s office for the absence to be recorded.

Car Park – Pick Up and Drop Off Again, I thank the parents and students for their co-operation with the revised traffic flow in the car park. The addition of painted direction arrows, lines and the pedestrian crossing has improved the safety for our students, staff and parents. We look forward to some new signage that will be added as soon as it arrives. Just a reminder, particularly in the morning drop off to park as far along the drop off zone as you can go, so that other cars can get into the drop-off zone rather than stopping on or near the pedestrian crossing. If you need to stop the car for more than 30 seconds, then you probably should park in the car parking area and wait for your child to find you in the car park.

Student Led Conferences Last week, our Year 12 students and parents met for the Student Led Conferences through Zoom. I, was very appreciative of the opportunity to discuss the learning needs and goals for the students in my Year 12 class and that the students could openly share their learning with their parents. The conferences are a vital component for keeping our students on track with their learning and also for keeping our parents informed of their child’s progress and learning goals. Please note that the Year 7 Student Led Conferences are scheduled for Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 March. The booking instructions for the conferences using the PTO platform will be sent out to parents by Mrs Norris. Parents are required to book a time-slot suitable for them and their child to attend via Zoom.

House Points This year we are displaying the battle for the House Competition in two ways. Firstly, the points will be displayed on the House Points Leaderboard in the Sports Centre and secondly as a visual representation with the House Flags on the Front Drive. Currently, the flags are in the order of Mawson, Cowan, Booth, Cuthbert and Dunlop. The points earned so far have been through our House Captain Flag Program. The House Captains are awarded points for putting up the Australian Flag each day, and the House flags up on Monday and down on Friday. We thank the house captains for supporting this program, and in particular, we thank Jack C for creating the roster. No doubt the order of the flags will change with the announcement of the House Swimming Carnival places and points.

Students can also earn house points with our upcoming Rowing Erg fundraiser and the Cross Country.

Swimming Carnivals It was great to see the students getting into the swimming carnivals last week. There was a lot of participation and some very close racing. We congratulate the students on their behavior and contribution to the carnivals. A special thank you is extended to Mr Wilkinson and the PDHPE/Sport staff team for their contribution to the three carnivals. We certainly hope that we can go back to a ‘normal’ carnival in the future. We look forward to hearing how our representative swimmers go with the upcoming WAS and ISA carnivals.

Stage 4 Report It was very exciting and encouraging to see so many Stage 4 students lining up to compete for their Houses in the swimming carnival last week. We were very proud of the standard of student behavior and their commitment to try their best, go outside their comfort zones and support one another.

A reminder that Year 7 student vaccinations will take place on Friday, 11 March. Please ensure that permission forms are returned to the Health Centre as soon as possible.

REMEMBERING SERVANTS OF THE SCHOOL

Trevor Press ASC Staff member 1966-2006.

A student was once heard to ask, “is there anything Mr Press cannot do?”

When we look over Trevor’s time here at the school, we are unable to answer that question easily as over the 38 years as a staff member at All Saints’ he has held many and varied positions and been involved in the many activities that take place at the school as organiser, instigator, co-ordinator, master and father, to list a few!

Trevor arrived at All Saints’ in 1966 as ‘a youthful eligible bachelor……with a small red ‘rubber band car’ which was regularly carried by students to various

parts of the school such as the Science Labs where Trevor was Senior Science Master from 1966 to 1974.

He was housemaster for 80 boys, 1970 to 1974, in Esrom House, which now houses Junior School Classes. After three years overseas as an exchange teacher, Trevor and Deidre moved into Watson House (Bean), where they stayed for six years as House parents.

From there, Trevor ran the Mathematics Department until 1989, when he moved into the newly built Kemmis House with his family until 1995. As a boarding House Head, he created his own job description to meet the needs of his students. As Tessa Jones writes, ‘There was no limit to Trevor’s creativity, energy, initiative and enthusiasm. Both Bean and Kemmis Houses blossomed with garden beds...

Medieval banquets for the boys were a yearly event… games of Mahjong, card tricks and birthday dinners were a frequent occurrence.’ continued page 13

Trevor was on the organising committee for the Presentation Ball, where he partnered the dance instructors for the lessons for many years as well as being the Master of Ceremonies for the night. He was the ‘voice of All Saints’ at sports carnivals and the Spring Fairs. He organised the Arts and Artists Weeks in the early days, as well as being a tutor on a number of occasions in some of the activities. He was editor and photographer of the school magazine the Vim and The Bathurstian for a number of years. He coached various sports but was coach and umpire of Netball in the later years, where he frequently took his teams through to Grand Finals. He was organiser of the Staff Cake Cooking Competition, the Melbourne Cup Hat Competition, was a member of the staff choir and was President of the Staff Association more than once.

Trevor taught drama, wrote, directed and produced plays, melodramas and revues for students and

staff. On his list of productions is “Wanted One Body”, “Our Town”, “The Royal Hunt of the Sun”, “Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat” and “Oh What a Lovely War”. He wrote and directed the staff melodramas on a yearly basis for many years, which were performed at the end of the year for the entertainment of the students and their families.

When Trevor and Deidre moved out of boarding to their home in Mt Rankin, they continued to entertain the school family with staff gatherings, Mathematics classes dinners and parties. He moved on to becoming a Marriage Celebrant for the next few years until ill health has prevented him from continuing.

Trevor’s contributions to the All Saints’ community should never be overlooked or forgotten, and even this article does not give the full picture of his time here as All Saints’ is so much the richer for his dedicated and generous service.

Tyler wins four Under 19 NSW titles at Track Championships Tyler Puzicha, Year 12, had a very successful and dominant display in the NSW Under 19 & Elite Track Championships on 25-27 February, coming away with four Under 19 NSW titles.

On day one, she won gold in the individual time trial, posting the fastest time and gold in the final of the team time trial.

Day two saw her post the fastest qualifying time for the sprints. She then won all her sprint rounds and came away with a gold in the final.
