I wish to thank all staff, students and parents who organised and / or attended a range of functions during the Parent Weekend. These once a term weekends are vital in creating a College of excellence with a strong sense of community engagement.

I enjoyed meeting many parents and visitors to the College at a range of events including Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day, the Year 12 Parent and Student Social Function, the ACER Scholarship Examination and All Saints Campus tour, the Boarders’ P&F Meeting and the Chapel Service on Sunday.

The induction of House Captains (Year 6) and Student Leaders (Year 8) at the Chapel Service was a particularly special moment.

I am very much looking forward to the Senior School Year 7-12 Swimming Carnival tomorrow at the Bathurst Aquatic Centre. Such events are crucial in terms of building College spirit, student engagement and leadership and a sense of identity and pride for the students. I encourage strong participation and support for Houses and the staff organising the Carnival. I am confident it will be a very special day.

In other sports news the Senior A Girls’ Touch Football team will travel to St Paul’s at Penrith for their final while the Second XI Cricket team will be away to Blue Mountains Grammar School.

A few general reminders for the year:

Out and about with the Headmaster The Highland Gathering is coming up in just over three weeks on Sunday 24 March. This is a whole College event held in March each year on the Scots Campus with the Spring Fair similar but different to be held on the All Saints Campus in September each year. Both occasions are showcase events for our wider Bathurst community providing opportunity to participate in the life of our College, to see our students, parents and staff in action and to envision the possibility of joining our College more permanently. In addition, the funds raised are crucial for improving the educational offerings and facilities of the College. I strongly encourage all parents to commit to this event and to support the dedicated team who spend months in preparation for the day. Scots Campus tours have been organized for the day at 12:00 noon and 2:00 pm so if you have any friends or family who are interested in joining a tour or learning more about enrolling at the College, please meet at the Scots All Saints College marquee.

Our Senior Music and Drama students have been working very hard on the College Musical, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

Tickets are on sale for the production to be held at BMEC on the last weekend in March. The standard will be high, so don’t miss out on purchasing you tickets.

Calendar correction The College Calendar incorrectly states that there is a School Picnic on the 8 March 2019.

Please be advised that the picnic has already been held and there will not be a picnic on this date.

All students are required to be neat and appropriately attired at all times. Whenever students are wearing their school uniform at the College or in public, they must wear the full school uniform with pride. Winter uniform is worn in Terms 2 and 3. Summer uniform is worn in Terms 1 and 4. Students are required to be in full school uniform when travelling to and from school.

Hats During Terms 1 and 4, students must wear a school hat when outdoors in the sun, particularly when participating in physical education and sporting activities. The Physical Education Department will provide sunscreen when students are participating in outdoor events during these terms. Students must wear a College sports cap.

Shirts and Blouses Students must ensure their shirts or blouses are kept tucked-in at all times.

Blazers Blazers are a part of the full winter school uniforms, therefore blazers are required to be worn during Terms 2 and 3. Students must wear their blazer on the following occasions: • At assemblies and at other formal occasions in Term 2 and 3 and on special occasions when advised on and off campus.

• When travelling to and from the College during Terms 2 and 3.

• On excursions, unless the staff member in charge directs otherwise.

• College winter jackets may be worn over blazers.

Hair Students must keep their hair clean and tidy at all times and wear it in an appropriate style. Hairstyles that involve shaving all or part of the hair or undercuts and steps are not regarded as appropriate. Navy, blue or red ribbons only may be worn. Boys must wear their hair above their shirt collar. Fringes must not cover the eyes. Girls may wear their hair below their shirt collar provided that it is tied back. Hair must be kept off the face - small unobtrusive combs or hair clips may be used for this purpose.

Jewellery When wearing the College uniform students may wear a plain wristwatch. Girls who have pierced ears may wear one set of gold or silver studs or sleepers. Year 11 and 12 girls may wear one set of small white pearl studs. Piercings must be in the earlobe only. Apart from ear piercing for girls, all students must not have any other visible forms of body piercing (eyebrows, nose, lips, tongue, etc). When wearing the College uniform students may wear a necklace of religious significance, but it must not be visible and permission must first be obtained from the Principal. Students may not wear bracelets, bangles, rings and anklets. Parents or guardians must inform the Headmaster if a student is required to wear a medic alert bracelet, necklace or therapeutic piercings.

K-6 Special Assembly This Friday at 9:00 am we will hold a special K-6 Assembly in the Kemmis Building. Age Champions from our recent swimming carnival will be announced. We’ll also be presenting one of our new awards - the Junior School Spirit Award. This week our focus has been on bringing smiles to the faces of others. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The start of the school day It has been wonderful to see lots of students reading in their classrooms before school. I certainly encourage students to do this if it works in with the busy morning routine for their families. Just a reminder that the morning bell goes at 8:50 am and the first period starts at 8:55 am.

WAS and HICES Swimming I’d like to wish all of our swimmers participating in the WAS and HICES swimming carnivals all the very best. I’m sure they’ll make us all very proud.

Strings Launch Year 2 and 3 students and their families are invited to our Strings Launch next Tuesday 5 March from 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm. Students will be provided with their instrument and are very excited to show off some of their new skills. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Winter Sport Trials It’s that time of year where we are asking students to nominate a sport they would like to play throughout winter. Please respond to the form sent out via CareMonkey if you haven’t done so already.

Playing a school sport is a great way to develop skills and build friendships and community.

CareMonkey CareMonkey is now being used as our main method for distributing notifications and permissions in the school. We are also encouraging you to use CareMonkey to notify of absence. Please do not use School Stream to notify an absence.

Year 3 and 4 will head to the Crusader Camp at Galston Gorge between 18 and 20 March. Please complete the relevant forms sent home via CareMonkey as soon as possible so we can collate the data for the camp.

Harmony Day Harmony Day is held each year on 21 March. It’s a day to celebrate our cultural diversity and is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. The message of Harmony Day is everyone belongs and in 2019 we’d like to encourage you to become involved. I’ll be seeking interest from parents to become involved via CareMonkey so please take a look at this and if you are interested then we’d love to hear from you.

Beauty and the Beast Junior School students will attend a rehearsal of Beauty and the Beast on Friday 29 March at 11:00 am. Further details will be forthcoming closer to the event.

Middle School Mr Chris Jackman Head of All Saints Campus / Director of Middle School

What a busy two weeks we have had since I last wrote an article for The Roar. It is hard to believe that we are approaching the middle of Term 1 but with so many exciting and new events happening time sure does fly by!

Last week we had a most successful Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day for Years 4, 5 and 8 students. Our special visitors spent the morning at a Chapel service and in class with their grandchildren. Our special friends participated in origami and music and also enjoyed a delicious morning tea. We greatly appreciate the support of these special members of our College community and it was wonderful to see everyone having a great time.

On Sunday we had our first All Saints Campus Chapel Service as part of the Parent Weekend.

There were more than 700 people in attendance to see our Year 8 Student Leaders and Year 6 House Captains inducted. It certainly was a wonderful way to celebrate the life of Jesus and the great school community we have.

This week the Year 7 and 8 students will be heading to the Bathurst Aquatic Centre for their swimming carnival. I wish them all the best as they represent their new Houses.

Radio Waves for Year 8 Captains Year 8 Middle School Captains, Zane Newham and Emily Brown met 95.1FM and B-Rock Radio Broadcaster, Nic Cook earlier this week when recording a Scots All Saints College radio advertisement to promote the upcoming whole College fundraiser, the Highland Gathering and Scots Campus tours to be held on 24 March from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

If you are listening to Bathurst radio in the lead up to the event you may hear our Captains promoting the key features including pipes and drums competition, Highland Dancing, Highland games, good food, stalls and the great family fun day out hosted by the Scots All Saints College P&F, students and staff.

Next week our Year 7 students will be travelling to Wiseman’s Ferry for their Outdoor Education Camp. It will be a wonderful opportunity for the students to form new friendships, develop resilience and use their initiative to solve problems. I look forward to hearing from them on their return next Friday.

Term 1 is progressing in a positive and happy way.

Students and staff are settling into the new routines and there is a nice buzz about the campus. Many thanks to the staff who have organised guest speakers, excursions and special events for Term 1 – all of these events add value to the learning experience and I know our students have appreciated these opportunities.

Our inaugural Scots All Saints College 7-12 Swimming Carnival is on tomorrow (Friday 1 March) at Bathurst Aquatic Centre. It’s always great fun to see the students performing in the pool – all that energy and youth! This year of course we’re also looking forward to seeing the new House shirts on display and hearing the chants the students have been working on. Please ensure you have communicated with the College regarding your child’s transport needs, as per the information provided on CareMonkey. Just a reminder that students must be wearing enclosed shoes to and from the carnival.

The Big Night Out is also on Friday night 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm in the Aikman Hall Scots Campus. Many thanks to Mr Jon Clipsham and the students who have been working hard to ensure this annual event goes smoothly. Tickets are $10. Scots All Saints College students and parents are welcome to attend.

Birthday wishes for Miss Lorna Ray This week we celebrate the birthday of Miss Lorna Ray now 90 plus years. As a long term neighbour to the Scots Campus since before it was turned into a school in the 1940s, Miss Ray and her family have made valuable contributions to the school over it’s history.

When Scots Branch School opened in 1942, Miss Ray was away working in Sydney, but her family helped by looking after the large group of small boys who had moved in next door. This was despite the fact that they occasionally raided her family orchard!

Her father, Mr Edwin Ray, provided practical assistance to the Branch School through lending his slasher and other equipment that was needed to maintain the grounds and ovals. A local committee was established to assist with the administration of the Branch School. Mr Ray was a member of that committee. With the Rev Alan Dougan, Mr Ivor Hector, Mr Doug TrevorJones and others, Mr Ray was one of the local community members who campaigned for the Presbyterian Church to establish a permanent school in Bathurst which it did in 1946. Mr Ray was Deputy Chairman of the Council of The Scots School.

Miss Ray’s sister, Mrs Nan Hunt was also well known in the Bathurst district, and was a noted author of children’s books.

Swimming Carnival 7 to 12 We are looking forward to the inaugural Scots All Saints 7-12 swimming carnival this Friday 1 March. Our PE staff, in particular our Head of Sport Mr Gardner, have been busy collecting trial times for the students to arrange the race start lists. Our house captains have been preparing posters and chants whilst our Year 7 and 8 students have been preparing house dances.

Being a new carnival format at a new location we expect time to be very tight. Therefore, the 200m Freestyle will be held early (from 8:45 am) and the 200 Individual Medley will be held after the house relays (this could be around 3:00 pm).

Students keen to show their skills in these races are asked to be ready for them. A note outlining transport, uniform etc. was sent out via email and was given to each student on Wednesday.

Can you help at the P&F BBQ/Canteen for the 7-12 swimming carnival? If so, please introduce yourself to the parents who are volunteering and offer your services. It is a great way to get to know other parents and friends whilst also enjoying the swimming races.

Winter Sport Choices Thank you to all the parents/students who have completed the winter sport survey. Those who have not yet completed the survey (sent via CareMonkey email) are asked to do so as soon as possible. We hope to get sport lists prepared quickly so that the appropriate registration procedures can be sent out to parents to be completed by the end of the term. If you are facing difficulty completing the survey – please contact our Head of Sport Mr Gardner (scott. gardner@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au) or our Junior and Middle School Sport Coordinator Mrs Nelson (kay.nelson@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au).

Preseason Netball Clinics We are hoping to have a Preseason Netball Clinic Saturday 9 March. Plans for the clinic will be finalized this week and confirmed early next week. At present the plan is to have Years 9-12 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and Years 5-8 from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm. Again, final confirmation to come early next week.

Senior Netball Trials Trials for the senior girls (Years 9-12) netball teams will be held on Saturday 16 March at the Scots campus from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.

Rugby Skills Days We are hoping to organise a Rugby skills day for all players (Year 6 - 12) on Saturday 23 March.

Further details will be forthcoming once confirmed.

Old Boys Cricket

Save the date … Sunday 17 March will be the inaugural Scots All Saints College Old Boys vs the 1st and 2nd XI cricket matches.

All Old Boys interested in playing are invited to contact Greg Radford (gjradford@bigpond.com). The matches will be held on the Scots Campus this year with games commencing at 10:00 am.

Grandparents’ & Special Friends’ Day Years 4, 5 & 8

Grandparents and Special Friends came together on All Saints Campus last Friday to connect with their grandchildren and learn more about what they do at school by exploring activities such as origami, music, library and science.

It was a wonderful, fun way for grandparents and special friends to share their grandchild’s love of their school and to support them in their educational journey, knowing more about what they do on a day to day basis.

More than 150 grandparents and special friends travelled from all over NSW to come to the event for students from Year 4, 5 and 8.

During the library sessions our guests were given a brief rundown of the role of the library in promoting literature and a love of reading; developing solid information literacy skills and an overview of our digital citizenship program. In addition, there was an extensive display of books available for purchase and subsequent donation to the campus library.

We would like to sincerely thank our guests for their attendance and very generous donations to the library. Approximately $2,500 worth of books complete with donation stickers will be on the shelves ready for borrowing by the nominated students as soon as practicable.

Hands on help for horses Our equestrian students have enjoyed learning the basics of equine first aid. Thank you to Georgia Hamilton who is an experienced equine vet nurse for giving the demonstrations. Students put their new skills to work by taking respiration rates, heart rates, checking digital pulses, capillary refill and gut sounds of the various horses. We would also like to welcome Georgia to our equestrian team.

Pink Stumps Day at CCGS The First XI Cricket team travelled to Central Coast Grammar last Saturday.

CCGS ran a Pink Stumps Day to raise money for the McGrath Foundation and they issued our players with some pink caps. Even our official scorer, parent Matt Chirgwin, who has come along to all our games during the season, was given his own hat!

All Middle and Senior School students are required to have a device to use for educational purposes within the classroom. Mobile phones will not be accepted as an educational device.

Last Thursday Scots All Saints College played host to the opening round of the HICES Debating competition across the Scots and All Saints campuses.

The HICES Debating competition is designed to provide students with the opportunity to debate key issues of the day with their peers.

Debaters from Macquarie Anglican Grammar School, Blue Mountains Grammar School and Kinross Wolaroi School converged on Scots All Saints College for an afternoon of robust intellectual engagement.

Scots All Saints College fielded five teams in the Senior and Open Divisions of the competition.

The team of Jack Dickenson, Baileigh Honeysett, David Hardie and Lachlan Beath faced off against inter-college rivals Austin Markwick, Simi Atluri, George Butler and Sophie Cox. The entertaining debate was closely contested but the experience of the latter team saw them take the win.

Keeran Rajkumar, Belinda Kidd, Robert Jeffries and Jessica Settree gelled well as a new team to execute an impressive victory over Macquarie Anglican Grammar School.

An equally impressive win was achieved by Jonah Siede, Digby Sharpham, Isobelle Sotter and Charlotte Russell over their Kinross opposition.

In the Open Division, Holly Hare, Natalia Burgess and Harry Dickenson showed real promise against Macquarie Anglican Grammar School in their first outing as a team and were unlucky to suffer a narrow loss.

Overall the day was a huge success for our debaters and a wonderful opportunity to showcase our new operations as Scots All Saints College.

I would like to thank Mr Andrew Maher, Ms Christine Sams and Miss Amelia Hodge for their assistance with adjudication on the day.

The next round will take place at Blue Mountains Grammar and we look forward to continued growth and success.

Put the Happy into Homework So it’s that time again when we are back into school and whether we like it or not we have the task of doing homework again, but instead of procrastinating I am here to help you with making homework less of a pain.

Here are some tips to help you enjoy homework more and get it finished faster: • Plan your time - make time for homework after school • Work smarter, not longer - make sure when you do work you are at your most productive so you don’t waste time • Set goals and reward yourself when you finish

State Conference is an event for anyone with an interest in international affairs. It’s a chance for you to meet like-minded peers and share your thoughts on issues affecting the global community. By the time you leave, we guarantee you’ll be better aware of what goes on in the world around you and more importantly about the role you can play in shaping its future.

Beauty and the Beast In just over a month, Scots All Saints College’s first musical Beauty and the Beast is set to take stage at the BMEC. With both schools performing the musicals Godspell and Oliver! last year respectively it has been interesting to see talents from All Saints and Scots combine and work together creatively.

Rehearsals after school have been diligently perfecting choreography, dramatic scenes and musical numbers.

The musical itself is based on a beloved Disney classic packed with extravagant songs, charismatic, wellloved characters and a renowned storyline. The original film’s empowering messages and comedic moments are better enhanced through theatre and drama, giving students a chance to show what they’re capable of both on and off stage. The musical has also seen a profound fusing of the students from the previous two schools, giving them a chance to befriend and interact with peers from all walks of life who have one commonality, a love for creating and performing a sometimes overlooked art form.

Students and staff alike from both campuses should commend themselves for how hard they’ve worked to put this all together.

Whether they’re a chorus member, a part of the main cast or a member of the prop and tech crew, they’ve helped bring a fantastic world to life that is sure to impress the members of the Bathurst community when it comes time to perform!

Bathurst Bulldogs Junior Rugby Union Club are running a Twilight 7s rugby tournament including skills sessions for a six week period. This is a fabulous opportunity for our students to develop and strengthen their rugby skills in the Junior years U7s – U/13s. Boys and girls are welcome.

Training and games for U/11s and U/13s is from 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm on Wednesday and Friday at the Bathurst Bulldogs rugby grounds.
