Annie – Tickets now on sale online via BMEC We are pleased to present the musical production of Annie featuring over 120 students from our Middle and Senior Schools collaborating, under the direction of Mr Jonathan Clipsham and his team of performance experts. Annie will showcase how the new Performing Arts Academy is enabling students to thrive through a blended experience of music, dance, drama and the technical components of stage production including lighting, sound mixing and set design. It should be a wonderful performance and Denise and I are very much looking forward to being there on opening night.

Annie will run at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre (BMEC) for three evenings from 26 – 28 March 2020. I encourage you to get in early to reserve your seats and support our students who have been rehearsing and fine tuning their performances to entertain our community. Further details can be found on page 11.

Co-curricular activities – Winter Sport Preferences We have reaped many benefits from our College coming together. This has been fully demonstrated on the sports field with many of our teams having successful seasons. Winter sporting preferences are now open and I encourage our students to nominate for a team to represent the College.

There is a now a diverse range of co-curricular opportunities on offer for all, ages and skills levels across our campuses. I challenge our students to step out their comfort zone, get involved and try something new to take advantage of offerings.

There really is something for everyone. I am

delighted that we have new lunchtime clubs starting up across the College including a Languages Club, Water Polo and a new Coding Club. (See on page 10). These opportunities enable our students to discover new skills, build talents and make new friends.

Someone once said ‘you won’t know, unless you go’ and this is so true in so many ways.

A reminder that the Year 7 – 12 Senior Swimming Carnival will be held tomorrow, Friday 28 February at the Manning Aquatic Centre, Bathurst. Parents are welcome to come along and cheer for our students.

Ives House renovations unveiled to the media Senior girls from Ives House joined Director of Boarding, Mr Anthony Le Couteur and Head of House, Lynne Woodlock to officially launch the newly renovated living and learning space to local media this week.

Year 12 Boarding Prefect, Meg Davis described the refurbished building as ‘wonderful’ and a ‘home away from home’ for the students.

room and gym, the girls are all very excited about their new facilities and have settled in well.

Mr Le Couteur said it is important for our boarding students to have an environment that is comfortable and as close to their home as you can get. He said this new house is a model for state-of-the art boarding accommodation for school students, providing a sense of belonging to give students the opportunity to thrive and flourish.

Regional visit a big success Thanks to everyone who attended our Scots All Saints College regional visits and made the journey so memorable. Our team enjoyed visiting with you, your hospitality and good conversation.

Ex-students share stories It was a lovely night at the Cowra Japanese Gardens last Friday evening, where Director of Boarding, Mr Anthony Le Couteur met with a number of past students and shared stories of what it was like to board at the College in previous times.

Peter Chivers is an ex-student from All Saints’ College (1959). He fondly remembers his time as a boarder from Barton House. Back in the 1950s, he recalls fees for one term cost 45 pounds and his father would sell the wool from three merino wethers to cover cost. Peter himself would catch rabbits over his summer holidays and earn enough Anthony Le Couteur, Gem Green (Norrie, ASC 1994), from the skins to pay his own fees for Term 1 each Lily Wright (ASC 2014), Tom Ford-Nobes (ASC 2015), year!

Lily Wright, now living and working in Cowra, graduated from All Saints’ College in 2014 and expressed her love for living in regional NSW. Gemma Green (nee Norrie) has a strong connection to Scots All Saints College. Gemma was an All Saints’ College Captain in 1994 and her husband, Stuart Green was Captain of the Scots School in 1988. It’s hard to believe that we’re nearly half way through the term already. The students have had a very settled start to the year and it is wonderful to see all of the learning taking place in the classrooms. I’d like to wish our students all the best for the upcoming WAS and HICES Swimming Carnivals.

Premier’s Reading Challenge At our assembly last week, we launched the Premier’s Reading Challenge. This year we encourage all students to take part in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Through the challenge, we aim to encourage a love of reading and enable students to experience the joys of quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student, to read and to read more widely. The Challenge commences on 2 March.

2020 Public Speaking Program This week you would have received some information relating to our Public Speaking Program. This year our program will differ to that of previous years and provide students with the opportunity to develop a range of skills. Each term students will be presented with a different task that they will prepare at home and present to their peers. Students will have three weeks to prepare for their first task and will present to their peers in Week 8. Please speak with your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

Harmony Day - Friday 20 March On Friday 20 March we will celebrate Harmony Day. It’s a day to celebrate our cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. Just as we did last year, we would love parents to be involved. Please refer to the CareMonkey notification for how you can become involved. Once again there will be a special afternoon tea and activities for students throughout the day.

Brainstorm Productions - 25 March On Wednesday 25 March 2020 Brainstorm Productions will be presenting their student wellbeing program 'The H Team' for Kindergarten to Year 4.

Brainstorm Productions help more than 360,000 students each year with bullying, cyber safety and resilience programs via a range of award-winning theatre performances. Brainstorm Productions' aim is to reduce the prevalence of bullying in schools and improve student behaviour and wellbeing.

Pre-K News The Great Big Enormous Sunflower Pre-Kindergarten re-enacted the Great Big Enormous Turnip story to harvest our sunflower grown by our 2019 class. We investigated the roots, stem, leaves, head, flowers, seeds and even insects that we found.

The children are looking forward to planting their own sunflowers next Spring as well as replant some more for the 2021 class.

HICES Debating

Year 7 to 12 Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to all of the students who represented the College at Round 1 of the HICES Debating Competition hosed by Scots All Saints College earlier this week. I wish all of our debaters all the best for the remainder of the competition.

Tomorrow, Friday 28 February, the Year 7 and 8 students will be participating in the Years 7 to 12 Inter-House Swimming Carnival at Manning Aquatic Centre. The students have been busy organising their House dances so I look forward to seeing them performing on the day.

HICES Leadership Day

We welcome the Grandparents and Special Friends of students in Year 4 and 8 to the College on Friday 13 March. This provides a wonderful opportunity for the students to show their Grandparents and Special Friends their school and to spend some quality time together.

Our Year 6 House Captains attended the HICES Leadership Day on Tuesday, 25 February at St Paul’s Grammar in Cranebrook. They were involved in many inspirational activities that will help them lead their Houses for the year ahead.

Year 7 and 8 Camp Information Night On Wednesday 27 February, Mr Steve Fox from the Outdoor Education Group will be conducting an information night for parents about the Year 7 and Year 8 Camps this year.

The meeting will be in the Kemmis Building with the Year 7 session beginning at 6:30 pm and the Year 8 session beginning at 7:30 pm.

We’re almost at the mid-term mark. As one would expect, our daily routine is running smoothly and I am pleased at how well our young people are embracing the academic and co-curricular opportunities presented. This week our Year 9-12 students were involved in Elevate Education sessions.

These sessions covered a variety of skills designed to improve study skills, effective preparation for exams and note taking. This year we had an exceptional presenter and the students were positive in their engagement and responses to the materials presented.

Swimming Carnival We are all looking forward to the swimming carnival this week. A note has been sent to parents outlining the requirements regarding swim wear, sun protection, meals and transport. If you did not receive this letter or have additional questions, please contact Rebecca. norris@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au Uniforms - Hats There has been a pleasing increase in the number of students wearing the correct College hat. INTER-HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL 2020 AGE CHAMPIONS 8 years – 12 years

Each week our students are out and about on multiple occasions engaging in worthwhile physical activity. This might be through their participation in PE lessons, sports training, equestrian lessons, playing informal minor games at recess or by representing the College in their chosen sport and so the list goes on. Evidence suggests that the physical, social, cognitive and emotional benefits of regular physical activity are incredibly important to the developing child. Here at Scots All Saints College we are providing many opportunities for our students to be engaged in regular and worthwhile physical activity. They will reap the rewards!

The K-6 Swimming carnival was a great success with all students involved in some capacity. It was delightful watching our infant swimmers race across the pool in the ‘Splash and Dash’ events.

This opportunity gives our younger students a taste for what is to come in future years. Given that we are only in the second year of the Scots All Saints College Inter-House sports competition, many records were broken on the day. As the years tick by, fewer and fewer records will be broken and many set in 2020 will be very difficult to break.

Congratulations to all students involved in the carnival. Special mention must go to Ruby Thorne who not only won all of her events but broke 6 new records. Congratulations to Booth House who were victorious on the day.

The Scots All Saints College Swimming team (Year 2 – Year 6) has been selected and notified. This team will compete at the WAS and HICES carnivals in the next couple of weeks. I wish all members of the team the best of luck as they prepare for and compete at these carnivals.

Winter Sport options have been sent to parents of students in the Junior and Middle School. Many parents have already discussed options with their child and together they have elected a Winter Sport. Winter Sport options will close off this Friday 28 February. If you are yet to respond, please refer to your email and invitation to select a Winter Sport for your child.

Mr Roohan will be trailling Year 5 and 6 boys who are interested in the HICES football selections. These trials will take place at school on Monday and Tuesday during lunch. Information has been distributed to students who have expressed interest.

The lunch time water polo competition is really shaping up. Teams will be notified if they have made it into the finals to be played during Week 7.

Good luck to the U12s Water Polo team who will take on many Metropolitan and Regional teams at the NSW U12s Water Polo Festival held in Orange over the weekend.

Best of luck to the Girls 13 Blue Touch Football team who will be flying the flag for the College in the local Touch Football finals next Monday afternoon. A number of Year 8 girls will also be representing the College at the ISA Touch Football finals this weekend, good luck girls.

Congratulations to Miller Rivett, Angus Argent-Smith and Todd Nelson (Scots Campus) who represented the College and competed in the NSW All Schools Individual triathlon this week. This event is particularly huge in the NSW triathlon calendar. With up to 150 competitors in each event our boys placed very well, Miller 28th, Angus 56th and Todd 71st.

Whilst it is wonderful seeing our students involved in a plethora of activities, I would also like to reinforce that it is very important for students and families to stay fully committed to their chosen Summer Sport for the remainder of the season. If a student requires an

exemption from training or games, please alert the coach or Mrs Kay Nelson as soon as possible.

Student radio stars Thanks to the staff and announcer, Tim Williams from 2MCE-FM Radio Bathurst and Orange who hosted our All Saints Campus Captains and Vice Captains on the radio last Monday.

Our students did a wonderful job in their first live on-air broadcast and enjoyed reading the weather, talking about the upcoming events at the school including Annie – the Musical, the Year 7-12 swimming carnival and the Parents’ Party to be held this weekend. This was an amazing experience for our students.

The students did so well, Scots All Saints College has been invited to co-host the broadcast once again next Monday 24 February 2020 from 8:00 am. Tune in to 93.2FM in Bathurst and 94.7FM in Orange to hear our Year 6 House Captains, Ruby Thorne, Emily Tallentire and Lyla Hellyer.

Join the Coding Club It is easy to find news where business leaders are looking for employees with coding skills. More broadly, coding skills can be encountered in factories where machines are controlled by computers, in accounting firms where scripts are run to analyse financial information and directly in Information Technology support roles looking after the computing infrastructure for large companies.

A new club for Senior Students has been introduced on Scots Campus to support students with an interest in pursuing further study in Engineering, Computing and Science fields.

Coding Club meets in the computer room next to IT support each Friday lunchtime with Mathematics Teacher, Mr Michael Germach and IT Manager, Mr Matthew Jarrett. The current focus is working through the Python Challenge. Python is not a scary reptile, but a programming language that is being used in a diverse range of application from writing games to business software. As the year progresses, we plan on introducing robotics with a view to competing in interschool competitions. As this is a club and not a mandatory subject, it is possible to tailor the activities to the interests of students.

Those students who are interested in Software Design and Development in Year 11 and 12 have an opportunity to build their skills through the Coding Club activities. All Year 9 to 12 students are welcome to come along every Friday at lunchtime to give it a try.

Our music program has had a wonderful start to the 2020 academic school year with instrument distribution, new students taking up lessons and the continuation of the Suzuki Strings Program.

The Music Centres are a hive of activity and we are looking forward to seeing each student further their skills throughout this year. It is so inspiring to see the students learning music and the positive impact on their learning in other areas across the college.

Our Tech Teams meet weekly on both campuses discussing this input or that drone feature! We welcome any students who are interested in running PA systems for events, capturing important events throughout the College and to support our Performing Arts Academy.
