Great news from the Commonwealth Government! Early in 2020 the College made a submission to the Commonwealth Governments’ Block Grant Authority (BGA) for a grant to support new science facilities for our senior students.

As part of the College’s unfolding master plan, which is driven by the curriculum needs for our students, modern, flexible science laboratories were identified as a key requirement.

Following a design process, a detailed submission was made to the BGA which allocates funding specifically to independent schools. It is a great boost to the College that following the evaluation process, the BGA has awarded $950,000 towards the new science centre. The total cost of the new centre will be $3million.

The new science centre, on Campus East, is to be located adjacent to the current TAS Centre and will have bright spacious laboratories facing the main College courtyard. A walkway between the science centre and the TAS building will link the two so that students can work collaboratively on a range of crosscurricular STEM projects and activities.

The goal is to complete the new centre and TAS

upgrades during 2023. Upon completion there will be a continuous offering of STEM activities from Kindergarten to Year 12.

This will provide our children with a unique opportunity to engage in projects and activities which not only focus on the study of sciences, technologies, engineering and mathematics, but most importantly engage them in challenging ways to understand the linkages between all these disciplines and the relevance of what they learn in class.

There will be regular updates about this project and others in the months ahead.

Swimming Carnival Junior School students are all set for their Swimming Carnival at Campus West pool at 11:00 am tomorrow, 19 February. The carnival will commence with Kindergarten and Year 1 races across the pool.

Championship races for students in Years 2-4 will commence at 11:30 am. Lunch will run from 12:45 pm – 1:30 pm with all races concluding by 3:00 pm.

You would have also heard that parents are now allowed to attend swimming carnivals with a 50% seated outdoor capacity. If you are interested in coming along and supporting our young swimmers, here is what you will need to do: • When arriving on campus please sign-in by scanning one of the QR codes we will have featured around the pool area.

• Please only use the available seating (we will have the seats properly marked out for you).

• Remember to sign-out when you leave the campus.

• Could you please leave the campus after your child has finished competing.

• As always, if you have any cold or flu-like symptoms we kindly ask you to stay at home.

Unfortunately, we are still not able to have chanting and cheering. But you are more than welcome to clap like crazy!

Evening Under the Stars I’d like to invite all Prep and Junior School parents and guardians to an ‘Evening under the Stars.’ The College and P and F will co-host the ‘Evening Under the Stars’ at Abercrombie House on 6 March 2021, from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Prep and Kindergarten Afternoon Tea You may have noticed on the school calendar that an Afternoon Tea was scheduled for Wednesday 24 February for Prep and Kindergarten parents. We’ve decided to move this event to later in the term to allow time for the new Prep playground to be completed.

We’ll let you know the date as soon as possible and we’ll also ensure your child/children can be supervised whilst you enjoy the afternoon tea.

Clothes without names There have been a lot of students misplacing clothing items recently and many of these items haven’t had a name on it. Please ensure your child’s name is written on all items of clothing so they can be identified easily if they go missing.

Stage 2 Camp Excitement is building for the Stage 2 camp. Year 3 and 4 will head to the Crusader Camp at Galston Gorge between 15 and 17 March. Stage 2 parents would have received information recently in Operoo relating to the camp. Please complete the relevant forms as soon as possible so we can collate the data for the camp.

THRASS Information Night - Monday 1 March 5:30 pm - Kemmis Building Our Junior School uses the THRASS methodology to assist in our teaching of the English Curriculum.

THRASS is an acronym for Teaching Handwriting, Reading and Spelling Skills. It is a system for teaching learners of any age about the building blocks of reading and spelling, that is, the 44 phonemes (speech sounds) of spoken English and the graphemes (spelling choices) of written English. From Kindergarten, students begin to identify these 44 phonemes and the key graphemes that are used to represent them.

On Monday 1 March at 5:30 pm Mrs Frances Duffy from the THRASS Institute will present an information session on THRASS. The session will be of benefit to new parents to the school who are unfamiliar with the THRASS methodology or for those who would like an update on what THRASS is all about. ROAR STEM in the Junior School Our weekly STEM lessons have commenced in the Junior School and have the students buzzing.

Kindergarten are involved in a six week ‘Investigation’ unit. Each week, eight Investigative Learning Centres are set up across both Kindergarten classrooms and the Kindergarten veranda. These learning centres provide experiences for the children to build on developmental skills in a real and authentic way. Centres are based around the following skill areas: dramatic play, collage, construction, sensory, reading corner, writer’s workshop, interest table and tinker table. The tinker table has been very popular!

Stage 1 and 2 have been learning all about the components of digital systems. Year 1 have just commenced making a model of their own digital system whilst Year 2 have had to plan a digital solution to a real-world problem.

Year 3 have been learning to identify and explore a range of digital systems with peripheral devices for different purposes whilst Year 4 have begun to use a 'Makey Makey' invention kit to interact with a computer and connect components in a circuit.

Dear sports fans, It’s the hat trick no cricketer ever wants - three Saturdays in a row completely washed out.

That’s the bouncer Mother Nature has bowled at our cricket teams who are still itching to get back out there after the Summer break.

Throw in a bye for our ISA tennis teams, plus a washout for our ISA touch footballers who were scheduled to play at St Paul’s Grammar School, and you would think it’s been a bit quiet on the sporting front around here.

But think again.

This week we’re running three swimming carnivals for our Junior, Middle and Senior schools - back to back to back!

The tents are up, the coloured zinc cream has been generously applied and we’re ready to jump up onto the blocks.

Best of all, the NSW Government has given us the green light to welcome parents back to our carnivals.

Our local touch football and basketball competitions are getting to the business end of the season with a lot of our teams well in contention for the finals.

Finally, it may still be February but our Winter sports season is just around the corner.

We’ll be sharing all the details with you in the coming weeks – just let us wash off the chlorine first.

Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day Unfortunately, we will not be having Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day for our Year 4 and Year 8 students this year due to COVID-19 Restrictions and the fact that many of these guests are part of the most vulnerable cohort of our population. Keeping all members of our College community safe is our highest priority.

The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students.

Students compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: engineering, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and legacy.

The new school year is well underway and my congratulations to all staff and students who have contributed to a smooth start to 2021.

Fortunately there has been some relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, but some rules remain in place. We are continuing to encourage students to wash their hands and use the sanitiser provided while discouraging the sharing of food and water bottles.

Course pages for each year group. Students and parents should be regularly checking these to ensure personal study/homework schedules include consistent work on assessments in order to meet due dates without undue stress.

Hats All students are required to wear their formal hat to and from school. The College ‘bucket hat’ is the only approved hat for sport and must be worn: • At recess and lunch if outdoors • During any outdoor lessons (PDHPE, Ag etc) • During Active Afternoons There is a large supply of bucket hats in the uniform shop so I encourage all students to purchase one if they are currently wearing a baseball style cap.

Road and Bus Safety Parents and students are reminded that pedestrians must use the designated, marked pedestrian crossings on the campus.

Students travelling on buses with seatbelts (i.e, all College buses) must wear the seatbelts provided.

Welcome to The Safe SPACE The decision to amalgamate the Preparatory School onto Campus West saw the Pre-K rooms on Campus East vacated at the end of 2020.

I would like to thank Mrs Catherine McDonnell, Executive Assistant to our Head of College, for her invaluable contributions in choosing and ordering the furniture so that it arrived and was ready for the first day of school this year. There remains work to be done to complete the areas in terms of painting the walls and doors. I will be seeking student input in order to decide on colour schemes for these surfaces.

In keeping with the College’s commitment to support student wellbeing, the rooms were transformed during the recent holiday period into a dedicated wellbeing area, a special hub on campus where many resources associated with student wellbeing are now concentrated.

The Safe SPACE comprises three linked student areas.

The presentation room is the focus for Invictus lessons in Years 9 and 10, as well as Christian Studies lessons for Years 9 to 12. This room features audiovisual technology to facilitate lesson presentations. Students are seated at round, meeting-style tables to encourage group discussions. The stools can be moved between tables very easily, and are stackable in order to provide additional floor space when required. The other two 'break out' areas allow students to choose their mode of seating when working on group activities or when completing solo reflection.

The central area features comfortable lounges, while the other area provides a variety of stools and large, comfortable floor cushions. The student areas are also well appointed and located to provide a meeting place for students outside of class time – for example, for boarding student discussion groups and for student study groups. In addition to the student areas The Safe SPACE also houses the Student Health Centre and the College Counsellor’s office.

We are very fortunate to have a dedicated space for student wellbeing. The furniture within the student areas was chosen to break free from traditional student

Boarders Valentine's Day brunch On Sunday 14 February, the boarding community on the Campus East (Scots) gathered together in the Pavilion to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a festive brunch complete with themed outfits, decorations and treats.

The boys cooked up a wonderful barbecue that was enjoyed by everyone, and was followed by cupcakes, cookies and fresh fruit. It was a great way to spend the morning and celebrate together.

A big thank you to the kitchen staff, boarding staff and Year 12 students who helped make the day possible.

After School Care 2021 This year we continue to offer quality After School Care to students of Kindergarten to Year 6 from 3:15 to 6:00 pm on school days.

The exciting news is that After School Care will soon operate from a classroom in our new Preparatory School which will make pick up easy. Until we have finalized the building project in that room After School Care will operate out of the same venue as it did last year (the green fenced area below the library).

Please indicate in your child’s Student Diary if you wish for your child to attend After School Care on that day.

After School Care incurs a $15 charge per student or $20 per family (i.e. 2 or more children) per day. Penalty fees will be incurred at the rate of $10 for every fifteen (15) minutes after 6:00 pm.

Preparatory School (Pre-K) students will be supervised by the Preparatory School staff until 5:00 pm at no charge. If Prep students stay after 5:00 pm they will be booked into After School Care and charged $15 per day. Penalty fees will be incurred at the rate of $10 for every fifteen (15) minutes after 6:00 pm.

On Campus East we ran a Valentine’s Day reading promotion with a beautiful display including some wonderful romance titles and a selection of wrapped books for students to select a ‘blind date’.

Our Year 9 students participated in a ‘speed dating’ activity where they moved around tables with a different selections of books which they ‘dated’ for five minutes, with the aim of finding a book they could love.

A special note to Stage 6 parents to inform you that your students have been enrolled in the Edrolo courses. Edrolo is an online video lesson and exam practice resource for Year 11 and HSC students that covers all key content and knowledge areas in the subscribed subjects.

Edrolo is currently used by 1000+ schools in NSW and VIC and we are confident it is an extremely valuable investment, providing our students with a differentiated and targeted level of support as they embark on their final stage of secondary schooling.

From the Archives - All Saints’ College Old Bathurstians’ News On Saturday 13 February we had a visit from ex-students Budi Chayadi (1989- 1993) and wife Rita Sutiono (1991-1992), who spent time 'going down memory lane' at the school.

It was a very moving journey for them as they had their youngest daughter with them and friends who obviously loved hearing and seeing these two reminiscing about their school experiences.

Although they could not venture into the buildings, Marsden, Kemmis and Britten, they were able to take photos and were impressed by the big changes which have taken place since the 1990’s.

Budi and Rita live in Indonesia but regularly travel to Australia as they have permanent residency and their eldest daughter is studying at NYU at the campus based in Sydney. Budi is a
