Our first Parent Weekend of the year is this weekend, 22-24 February. The purpose of the Parent Weekend is to encourage the whole College community to make a special effort to attend events and to mix with other parents, staff and students to build our community. In creating the College Calendar, the staff tries to arrange a number of special events for these weekends. The weekend concludes with a Chapel Service with a very particular focus each time.

Every Parent Weekend is for the whole College but the Chapel Service will be specific to one campus each term. The Term 1 and 3 Chapel Service will be on All Saints Campus and the Term 2 and 4 Chapel Service will be held on Scots Campus. Students who attend the College on these campuses are required to come along and we encourage all parents to join them. The Chapel Services have a very specific purpose in addition to giving thanks, building community and supporting the Christian Mission of the College.

There are a number of events planned for this Parent Weekend as follows: • Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day on Friday 22 February for students in Years 4, 5 and 8.

• Year 12 parent social function at Scots Campus on Friday night.

Out and about with the Headmaster • The ACER Scholarship Examination will be held at 9:00am on Saturday in the Kemmis Building; applications for scholarships have closed. Those sitting the examination need to arrive at the All Saints Campus at 8:30am.

• While students are sitting the ACER Examination, Mr Jackman will lead a tour of All Saints Campus for parents with information opportunities as we move around the grounds.

• The Boarders’ P&F will meet in the Library on Scots Campus at 4:00pm on Saturday; all boarding parents are encouraged to attend.

• The Parent Weekend Chapel will be held at 9:00am on Sunday on the Chapel Lawn at All Saints Campus.

All Saints Campus Leaders’ Induction Service On Sunday 24 February a special Chapel Service will be held where the Year 8 leaders of the All Saints Campus and the Year 6 House Captains will be inducted.

The service will begin at 9:00am and run for about 45 minutes followed by a morning tea. All students from Kindergarten to Year 8 are required to attend and will be sitting in their year groups. Students will need to be in the full summer uniform with their wide brimmed hats (where available).

Pre-Kindergarten students and their families are also very welcome with the Pre-Kindergarten students to be seated with their parents.

This is a very special occasion for our College and so we look forward to seeing you there.

It was my great pleasure to present cricket caps to members of the First XI Cricket Team at Senior School Assembly this week. The new caps were presented to students who have played five matches for the First XI this season.

The caps display the ‘gold lion of excellence’ which is a symbol of achievement and an accolade for all firsts’ teams. The ‘gold lion of excellence’ will also be used in other ways at

our College to represent outstanding achievement and success. In many ways it is like a gold medal but using our own College symbol. It also appears on their sporting tops.

I wish to thank parents, friends and staff of the College who made a special effort to attend the All Saints Campus Picnic on a beautiful evening last Saturday. It was a wonderful social occasion in a beautiful setting.

Gillian and I enjoyed moving around the parents and students and speaking to many in attendance. The two schools that have come together in this merger to create Scots All Saints College both enjoyed a wonderful community. We all need to continue to work together to ensure our community feel is retained in the new College.

With your continued to support and efforts, I’m confident this will be the case.

space to inspire Time at the All Saints’ College: 14 years 2005-2017 (Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12) What are you doing now?

I am currently in the Royal Australian Air Force based at Williamtown in Newcastle NSW. I am employed as Airbase Protection and we work with the Military Working Dogs and Handlers.

I also run a business online which helps teach people how to market and represent themselves and their personal brand more effectively.

What I enjoyed most about school?

I am a believer of taking every opportunity that is presented to you and the broad range of co-curricular activities that were available was by far what I enjoyed doing the most. This ranged from mock trial, to rugby union and cricket, international music trips and hikes through the NSW high country.

What did you value the most about what you learnt?

It’s not exactly what I learnt that I value the most, but how I learnt it and the genuine care that the teachers had for every single student. This really set us apart from a lot of other schools.

How has school prepared you for the real world?

School taught me how to build meaningful connections, be able to talk to many different people with ease and deal with little conflicts that come up. It also gave me confidence with public speaking and presenting to large audiences. It has taught me the value of treating people with respect and how that can have a flow on effect to the way others treat you.

What is one word to describe your time at the College and why?

Amazing.

Being at the College for 14 years really allowed me to build great friendships. I am so privileged and grateful for every opportunity that I was given, every trip I went on. I genuinely enjoyed waking up and going to school each day and I think that is something that every kid should be able to experience and in a community like this there’s no doubt that they will.

Cameron Redpath Royal Australian Air Force “It’s not exactly what I learnt that I value the most, but how I learnt it and the genuine care that the teachers had for every single student. This really set us apart from a lot of other schools.”

What has inspired you on your chosen career path and why?

I joined the Air Force straight out of school through the Gap year program as I wanted an adventure. I have always been around planes growing up and the Air Force stood out for me rather than the other services.

My work online is inspired by helping people and seeing the genuine change that you can have on someone’s life where they go from really struggling, to abundance in every aspect of their life What is the message to other students at the College?

Definitely take every single opportunity that you get presented with. Whatever task you are doing at any point in time, apply yourself as much as you can because ‘luck’ is what happens when opportunity meets preparation.

Be grateful for all the things that you have.

Gratitude is one of the most powerful things out there. I wish I had realised this when I was still at school but in life, mistakes are how you learn. Do not be afraid to have a go at something, put your hand up to do something or just simply try something new. Because fear will kill a lot more of your dreams than failure ever will.

Inter-House Swimming Carnival K-6 The very first Scots All Saints College Inter-House carnival took place last Friday in brilliant conditions.

The colourful house shirts, the house tents, war cries and the general excitement amongst the children contributed to a fabulous atmosphere. The carnival began with the House war cries and whilst all Houses were very organised with this activity, it really came down to the originality and the volume and enthusiasm generated by the students.

Congratulations to Dunlop House for their success in this area.

Our delightful infant students had the opportunity to race across the pool with the assistance of the Yr 6 lifeguards. Whilst we clearly have some future swimming stars who are well and truly on their way, it was the courage and enthusiasm displayed by all that was so impressive.

After the infants exited the pool area and moved on to some sprinkler fun, the remaining students in Year 2-6 prepared themselves for the championship races. All students had the opportunity to swim the freestyle event and the fastest six students swam in the form stroke finals. The day concluded with the relays where double points were up for grabs.

All records from All Saints College and The Scots School prior to 2019 will be archived and printed in the swimming program. Every student who won an event during this carnival will hold the new Scots All Saints College record for that event. So effectively there were 54 new records set on the day.

Congratulations to Ava Purvis, Ruby Thorne, Harry Thorne and Chontelle Burgess who won all six of their individual races.

Congratulations to Booth House who won the House shield with 442 Points. All students must be commended on the way they involved themselves throughout the day and for demonstrating such wonderful House spirit.

Finally, a huge thank you to the staff, parents and friends who were able to assist throughout the day either on the pool deck or in the P&F canteen.

PARENT WEEKEND

Campus Leaders’ Induction Service On Sunday 24 February a special Chapel Service will be held where the leaders of the All Saints Campus and the Year 6 House Captains will be inducted.

The service will run from 9:00am until around 9:45am followed by a morning tea. Both will be held on the lawn outside the All Saints Chapel. In the case of inclement weather the service will be held in the Bickerdike Centre.

All parents and friends of the College are welcome and encouraged to attend.

All of the students from Kinder to Year 8 are required to attend and will be sitting in their year groups. Students will need to be in the full Summer uniform with their wide brimmed hats (where available).

Pre-Kinder students and their families are also very welcome with the PreKinder students to be seated with their parents.

Careers Advice Mrs Helen Jones

An individual’s career journey is rarely what they expect it to be, and this can be said for my own personal career to date. It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I join Scots All Saints College in its foundation year.

Communication is a big part of any successful career and part of my role will be to disseminate all current information to parents and students regarding different post-school options. Students can find me nextdoor to the library on Scots Campus, which is a perfect location for senior students on their study breaks to drop in and have a chat. Being highly visible and accessible is important in building my relationship with the students.

I am able to assists students with careers interviews, interview preparation, resumes, job applications, University/scholarship/ accommodation options and applications, Gap year options, acquiring a Tax File Number (TFN) and Unique Student Identifier (USI).

After School ILC Homework Centre Senior School Senior Campus Homework Centre will be open Mondays from 3:30pm to 4:45pm at the Scots Campus Library. Humanities, English, Science and Mathematics specialists will be available.

Bring work to complete and a water bottle.

Biscuits will provided for afternoon tea.

Lithgow back with a new name, same smiles Scots All Saints College Lithgow has had a positive start to the year with a large intake of new students.

“Both our pre-kinder class room and K-6 classroom have got new students who have settled in quite quickly,” K-6 Teacher Erika Pringle said.

Highland Gathering Sunday 24 March School Stalls Jobs Call Out Hi Everyone, Our first all College major P&F fundraiser, The Highland Gathering, is fast approaching and we’re looking for the help of parents, students and staff to help to make it happen. You will soon see the student rosters for the school stalls and we need parents to help with them but we also have some important jobs that need to be done to keep everyone safe and organised.

Now is the time to get involved, have some fun, and meet some other parents and connect with our College community.

At the event - Sunday 24 March: We need a couple of people to follow our Risk Assessment procedure and walk the grounds on Sunday morning to identify any safety issues and help resolve them.

Collate the applications, mark out the sites. Welcome and direct the stall holders from 7am Sunday morning.

Thursday 21 March: 4pm Putting up the Marquees and the Big Tent, Dance floor and stalls Thursday 21 March: 5pm Collect the castle from the Band shed and take it to the oval. Flatbed trucks welcome.

Friday 22 March: from 8pm Build the castle. Ladies and gentlemen are welcome. It is always fun and challenging putting the castle up. Luckily, we have Scott who knows where all the pieces go.

Saturday 23 March: Bunting, Parking and Furniture set up and all the last-minute odds and ends.

Sunday 24 March 4pm Pull the castle down. What takes hours to put up comes down in no time with enough helpers.

We are looking to get a craft corner going to keep little hands and minds occupied while the pipes ring out. Skills with Glue and Scissors required.

11:30am to 1:30pm and then 1:30pm to the end of Equestrian For the safety of Horses, Riders and Drivers we need some folk to attend the gate and driveway to ensure approved cars* and horses move safely past one another. These teams will follow on from the O’Connell RFS. *Coaches, Disabled Patrons, Stall Holders and Classic Cars, Journalists.

Year 9 Cadets Last Wednesday 13 February was our first gathering for Cadets. Year 9 to 12 students were briefed on procedures for Cadets and introduced to the staff and Cadet Leaders. We also had enough time to issue the boys and a few girls their Cadet camouflage (cams) uniform (button up shirt, trousers, boots and hats). The remaining girls and any students absent last week were issued their uniform this week.

Information on Cadet Uniform The Cadet cams are issued by the Australian Army for cadet use for free. They are to be cleaned and worn correctly and returned at the end of the year. We expect students to respect their uniform and look after it, as if it is damaged (normal wear and tear expected), lost or not returned at the end of the year – the students will be charged for it. Our quartermaster (Mrs Gates who controls the Q store) keeps a record of the uniform issued which the students sign for and is able to assist any students that may have issues with uniform (e.g. incorrect fitting, etc.)

Year 9 students are permitted to wear their Army Cadet uniform to and from school starting next WEDNESDAY 27 February as by this date all students should have been issued the uniform.

Year 8 students will need to get changed before Cadets on a Wednesday afternoon.

Undershirts - Cadets will be required to wear an undershirt (pale green or green cam pattern) under their button up cadet shirt.

Whilst we did have a few of these to issue, they were only in an XL size and we only had a few to give away. Undershirts can be purchased from stores such as ‘Aussie Disposals’ on William Street for $15 to $20.

Year 9 Camp We are currently trying to finalize a date and location for the Year 9 camp, which we hope will fulfil the requirements for Cadets, Duke of Edinburgh and Outdoor Education. It is more than likely that this camp will be in late Term 3.

When more details are confirmed we will be able to provide information on requirements and costs.

Rural Fire Service Cadets Students from Year 9 and up are offered the chance to be trained by the Rural Fire Service in fire control and management. This is a free program, aimed at our rural students and any students looking to fulfil the community service requirement of the Duke of Ed program. Training does not mean that students will be called to fight fires – however a school challenge competition is held later in the year for the students to demonstrate their team work and newly acquired skills. Training for RFS Cadets is on Monday evenings from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on the Scots Campus - Top Oval (car park area near the indoor pool).

Winter Sport Choices Winter sport choices information and a survey have been distributed by email through CareMonkey. Please read the information carefully and reply to the survey by Monday 25 February. Once we have collated the data from the winter sport choices surveys, we will be able to plan the teams we can offer with the sporting competitions that we have available to us. An information letter for each sport with details on the registration process, costs, requirements, training etc. will be sent in the coming weeks.
