An Evening Under the Stars Over the past 12 months it has been extremely difficult, indeed impossible, for our wider community to come together. While many COVID-19 restrictions have been eased, there are still those which relate specifically to schools.

To hold a major event for our community ‘on-site’ is just not viable as the number of parents who could attend is limited, the service of food and beverages needs to be highly regulated and the COVID plan needs to be enforced with our own COVID marshals and so on.

But there are alternatives and I am delighted that together the College and the P&F will co-host the 'Evening Under the Stars' social gathering at Abercrombie House on 6 March 2021, from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

This is a fantastic venue to gather, the property is not subject to the restrictions placed upon the school, and under their COVID-19 approved plan can accommodate all our needs.

This will be our first whole community event for parents, guardians, staff, members of Council and supporters of the College.

75th Anniversary of the opening of The Scots School There was a new entrant on the education scene in the city when The Scots School, Bathurst opened at the beginning of 1946.

The site, Karralee, had been used from 1942-1945 by the The Scots College, Bellevue Hill, as a branch school away from a possible enemy attack on Sydney during World War II. This turned out to be with good reason. Some of the Branch School Old Boys were still at Bellevue Hill on the night of the Japanese midget submarine attack of May-June 1942.

Members of the Bathurst Presbyterian congregation in Bathurst decided as a result of the Branch School experience that Bathurst needed its own school, and successfully campaigned with the Church for this.

The Branch School premises of Karralee became the site of the new school, and Rev Bruce Galloway was appointed as first Headmaster. Other staff included Miss Phemister, Miss Lavelle and Mr John Bulkeley.

The foundation of The Scots School owes much to the efforts of Rev. Alan Dougan, who was the first Chairman of the School Council. The new school’s neighbour Mr Edwin Ray was the first Deputy Chairman of the Council. His daughter Miss Lorna Ray is still the school’s neighbour. Several other local identities involved included Mr Ivor Hector, Perry Taylor, and Mr Doug Trevor-Jones, who designed the school’s crest.

During 2021, Scots All Saints College hopes— COVID-19 conditions permitting — to be able to appropriately mark this anniversary.

Included here is the first official school photo taken in 1946, although Tim Hector, one of our original Karralee Boys tells me that it was taken when school had finished for the afternoon and the day boys had gone home. Innovation Centre construction on track The Innovation Centre on Campus West (Saints) is on track for completion by 31 March 2021.

SASC Swimming Academy News Our summer season (Term 1) is now into its full second week. We have over 110 students involved in our various programs and thank our parents for their support. At the end of 2020 we had 12 of our students complete their training as swimming teachers. Three of the students have now completed their training and received their accreditation. We congratulate Matilda, Sophie and Lucy on this achievement. These students now contribute to teaching our large number of learn-to-swim students. We also have another half a dozen students completing their practical hours and they are doing an amazing job.

In the last week of the January holidays we had an intensive 15-day program. It was great to have Kate McEwen back on campus to take the learn-to-swim students.

We wish the students in our SASC Swimming Academy squads all the best in the upcoming swimming carnivals.

The Junior carnival will be held on the 19 February, Middle School on 17 February and the Senior School Carnival on 18 February. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions for Schools and Carnivals we are not able to have spectators and the students are not even allowed to cheer or chant! I am sure we can develop some new ways of raising house spirit under these conditions. The House leaders have been challenged to come up with some ideas that fit within the COVID-19 guidelines.

Active Afternoons We have resumed our Active Afternoons program for Term 1 2021. On the Senior campus we remind students that they need to get changed into their sports clothes at lunch time. We are trialling allowing students to go home in their sports uniform. We expect students to support this change and to be in the correct sports uniform (SASC sport polo white shirt and SASC sports shorts). All students will be required to meet in the Senior Quad at 3:15 pm for a uniform and roll check prior to dismissal.

Please note that there will be no Active Afternoon on 18 February as the Senior School Swimming Carnival will be held on this day.

Wet Weekends We have not had a great start to weekend sport with two wet Saturdays in a row. We are reviewing methods of getting messages about last minute cancellations and changes to people and hope to communicate these as soon as possible.

Strength and Conditioning We thank the Senior students who have expressed an interest in Strength and Conditioning sessions.

We are currently finalising a timetable and will email details and class times to the students this week.

Highland Dancing Our Highland Dancing program will resume this week. Mrs Durie is going to run classes on the Campus West (Saints) from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

Students from the Senior campus may catch a cross campus bus to Campus West (Saints). All students will need to arrange to be picked up from Campus West (Saints) after the session. Interested students are required to enroll directly with Mrs Durie. An information letter is available from Mr Adams on the Senior campus and has been emailed directly to Middle School families.

National Road Cycling Success We have some great news on a former student and congratulate Emily Watts (2019 Graduate and 2018 Scots School Captain) on her amazing success at the National Road Cycling Championships. Emily won the Under 23 Elite Women’s road race and finished 5th in the Open Women’s Race. Emily also finished 7th overall in the Individual time trial and 2nd in the Under 23 Division.

All Things Sport Mr Mark Wilkinson Sports Administrator

We’re super excited to have our Active Afternoons up and running again every Thursday and Friday on both campuses. Elbow bumps for everyone who remembered to wear their sports uniform.

Swimming Heats We’ve been running swimming heats this week and our stopwatches have been recording some super-fast times. We’re really excited to have a long list of swimmers ready to take a sledgehammer to our current school records at next week’s carnival.

Speaking of swimming carnivals – here are some dates worth putting into your diary. The Middle School carnival is on Wednesday 17 February at Campus West while our Senior School Carnival is on Thursday 18 February at Campus East. Our Junior School Carnival is on Friday 19 February at Campus West. Our house swimming caps can be purchased from the uniform shop.

We’ll be sending out more details to students in the coming days regarding signing up for races and as always, we’re encouraging everyone to get involved and score points for their house.

Students are to wear their house shirts and plain navy or black swimwear. SASC swimwear is preferred and house-coloured swim caps to be worn while racing.

Water Polo Competition Our lunch time water polo competition is kicking off in Week 4 for our Middle School students. If you’re interested, check in with Mrs Nelson for all the details.

Washed out weekends Spare a thought for our school cricket, tennis and touch teams. Our first two weekends of cricket have been washed out. Fingers crossed for some more sport-friendly weather this weekend.

Western Area Swimming Championships This is Harry Thorne. He’s in Year 6 and as you can see he had quite a day at the recent Western Area Swimming Championships. Harry won 12 golds, one silver, one bronze and a sore neck from carrying home all those medals. Great work Harry!

Lily selected in 15s NSW Hockey Team Congratulations to Lily Kable from Year 9 who has recently been selected in the 15’s NSW team for hockey. The best part is Lily gets to represent NSW at the state carnival which will be held right here in Bathurst this April. Go get ‘em Lily.

WAS Basketball selection We’re showing a few of our senior basketballers some love. These talented hoopers have recently been selected in the WAS basketball team Phoebe Moller, Callie Molkentin, Hannah Dunn, Lucy Proctor, Andy Jackman, Joey O’Neil, Oscar Stocks, Luc Fenton, Jack Tribolet and Will Stanmore.

Getting to know you... Senior School Teachers Mr Luke Gillmer - HSIE Teacher

I am a teacher of HSIE with a focus on Legal and Business Studies at HSC level, Geography, History and Commerce for students in Years 7-10.

I grew up on a sheep farm in the Central West and completed my HSC in 2000 attaining an ATAR of 93.95. My teaching career started in 2009 after previously working in advertising. I started initially in public education in Western Sydney and have since worked in a range of schools both public and private in NSW, Victoria and Queensland. Academically I hold a Masters of Educational Leadership, BA Business, BA Sports Science, GrapDip in Education and a GradDip in Laws.

My philosophy of teaching is aligned with positive psychology theory. I want students to firstly feel safe and happy in my classroom so they can develop a desire to learn. My role is to guide them through their education developing tasks that challenge and engage them.

My hobby away from work is triathlon. From 2011-2013 I raced at the elite level in middle distance triathlon with my best result being 4th Place at Vancouver 70.3. I continue to have a love of the sport and compete in events from Sprint to Ironman distance. My greatest achievement in triathlon was competing in the Hawaiian Ironman World Championships.

Careers Advice Mrs Helen Jones Career Development Officer

Welcome back to all students! We have hit the ground running in careers and are looking forward to an exciting and rewarding 2021.

Year 12 – Career Interviews It is pleasing to see so many Year 12 students being proactive in their career planning and already booking their one-on-one careers interview. All Year 12 students will attend a minimum two appointments as we work together to develop their personal transition plan for their post school life. Taking the time to do this builds reassurance and gives direction, thus helping with the stress of what next? If your son or daughter is in Year 12 encourage them to book in a time.

Parents are always welcome to join the interview or call any time if you have any queries.

UOW Discovery Day Working out what do to do with your life can be very challenging and daunting and not only for school students. Often the thing that stops us from pursuing a particular path can be as simple as not fully understanding the steps needed to get there. They say ‘knowledge is power’ and this is very true in the world of careers. Many of our students are preparing to transition from school into the world of work soon and one of the best things we can do to assist them is to create opportunities to experience different environments and potential pathways.

We will be attending the University of Wollongong’s Discovery Day next week, experiencing a full day of lectures and immersing ourselves into Uni life! We Look forward to reporting on all the amazing experiences had and the tangible benefits gained.

TAFE 2021 Good luck this week to all our TAFE students who ventured up the hill for their first week of classes.

We have 11 new students attending TAFE this year studying a range of qualifications from beauty to automotive, from animal studies to electrotechnology and nursing. This is a great opportunity to gain a dual qualification – a subject for your HSC pattern of study and a nationally recognized TAFE certificate.

Work Experience Opportunity - ANU Astronomy The Mount Stromlo Observatory offers a limited number of work experience places to Year 10, 11 and 12 students each year. These placements are typically one week in duration and students work on an astronomical project under the supervision of professional astronomers.

On Campus West, students from Year 2 to Year 6 have been celebrating Valentine’s Day by speed dating with books. Students have a couple of minutes to get to know a book before moving on to the next one and hopefully finding a 'true love' to borrow for the week. Students in Year 7 and 8 have also celebrating love through a 'blind date' with a book. Students choose a wrapped book and only discover its identity once it has been borrowed. This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce students to some new books in our library!

Getting to know you... MIC Rugby Mr Rich Freeman - MIC Rugby & Touch Football, Boarding Activities Coordinator, Residential Assistant (Lyon House) Throughout my life rugby has been a massive part of shaping the person I am today. This is one of the magic things that sport offers us all, the comradery, passion, teamwork, competitiveness, discipline, respect and the opportunities to experience adventures around the world and interact with a diverse group of people. In joining the Scots All Saints family, it is this concept of team sport that I hold with such high esteem and why I view our rugby and touch football programs as fundamental components of a well-rounded education.

My passion is developing programs that put the child at the centre of their learning, designing opportunities through sport to develop decision making, creativity, leadership, self-awareness, and resilience that are becoming increasingly valuable traits for our students’ futures.

Originally from England, my coaching career began in high school and led me to study a Sports Management and Coaching degree. I have now spent over a decade in community, talent development and professional rugby environments, including Wasps Rugby, Harlequins and England Rugby where I was privileged to support hundreds of young players and coaches! A particular highlight was in the build up to the 2015 Rugby World Cup where I delivered a rather special coaching session in the back garden of 10 Downing Street with the then Prime Minister David Cameron and the Webb Ellis Trophy watching on.

In 2016 I moved to the warmer climate of the Southern Hemisphere to travel and experience new cultures, working in education, sport and boarding roles in Australia and New Zealand and volunteering as a teacher in a remote Fijian village. In 2018 I became MIC Rugby at Kinross Wolaroi School and loved the opportunity to shape the rugby program at the school, loving every moment from teaching tackling to first time players to watching students represent their country. As a World Rugby Coach Educator and Level 3 coach, I am passionate about developing people and am so excited to offer my energy and experience to support the Scots All Saints community.

At Scots All Saints College I perform a number of roles, firstly as the Boarding Activities Coordinator, aligning and organising activities for our boarding community, as a residential assistant in Marsden-Lyon House and as Master in Charge of Rugby and Touch Football, my goal is to mirror the ambitious nature of the school and create innovative, aspirational and holistic programs that offer every child the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a boarding and sporting education.

Rugby pre-season training kicks off next week Rugby will be starting pre-season training on Tuesday’s after school from 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm. The first session will be starting Tuesday 16 February on the Old Boys Oval, Campus East. Campus West (Saints) sessions will be held Friday after school 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm.

The French Connection At the end of 2020 the two Year 5 classes presented an all-French concert showcasing two adored English stories to their fellow Junior School peers – “Cher Zoo” (Dear Zoo) and “Jacques et les Haricots Magiques” (Jack and the Beanstalk).

Those that attended admired the performances and the French speaking abilities of the young students.

We are currently having the video version edited and it will be available for your viewing and entertainment, in the coming weeks.

I feel this year has begun with a much different momentum and the LOTE department is preparing with fervor!

2021 brings new opportunities and eclectic possibilities for students to be involved in French beyond the classroom: • The creation of the French TV channel “Bonjour Bathurst – Love French, Live French”, albeit a recent initiative, has gathered much enthusiasm from French students who enjoy the challenge of producing and writing stories and conducting interviews in French, whilst involving their peers, other faculty members and now French speakers in the wider community.

• French Club: This is a weekly occurrence, that I run during lunch time. The purpose of this group is to offer students an experience outside of the classroom to further develop their French skills. All Middle School students are welcome to engage with this program which makes learning languages fun, authentic and relevant to their lives.

• Alliance Française school competitions: Students are supported in the opportunity to partake in a range of entries, from film production to artwork.

This is a holistic and inclusive approach to the development of Language skills and an intimate understanding of French Culture.

Middle School Try Day – tell your friends We are holding our very popular Middle School Try Day and Boarding Sleepover for new students interested in commencing in Years 5-8 in 2022. The sleepover will be held on Sunday, 14 March followed by the Try Day on Monday, 15 March.

These events are designed to allow new students to join classes, meet the teachers and get to know other students.

This year we continue to offer quality After School Care to students of Kindergarten to Year 6 from 3:15 to 6:00 pm on school days.

The exciting news is that After School Care will soon operate from a classroom in our new Preparatory School which will make pick up easy. Until we have finalized the building project in that room After School Care will operate out of the same venue as it did last year (the green fenced area below the library).

Please indicate in your child’s Student Diary if you wish for your child to attend After School Care on that day.

After School Care incurs a $10 charge per student or $15 per family per day.

Preparatory School (Pre-K) students will be supervised by Preparatory School staff until 5:00 pm. If Prep students stay after 5:00 pm they will be signed in to After School Care and a charge of $10 will be incurred.
