There are those of us who can remember ‘school days’ as very rigid affairs with ‘tough love’ punishments and an extremely narrow curriculum.

Commencement Service

Junior and Middle School service will be held at 9:00 am on Campus West and Senior School at 12:15 pm on Campus East.

Even today, we still hear the call to ‘get back to basics’ (whatever that means).

The reality is that the world has moved on and schools are more than places that deliver a fixed academic experience. They are focused on the overall development of young people intellectually, physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually, to enable them to flourish independently and contribute to their community in a positive way.

Strengthening these qualities is a core focus this year.

On March 1 we will welcome Mr Andrew Weeding as Deputy Head and Head of the Senior School. His role is to focus on intellectual and social development.

A conversation with the Head of College continued

A modern approach to learning about the Christian Faith with Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 is being introduced. Known as WLF: Wisdom, Life and Faith, the course focuses on how the wisdom of the past impacts life today and how faith in God deeply enriches our lifelong journey. Our Chaplain will take the leadership of our spiritual health from Term 2 this year.

Our goal for 2021 is to continue to build, refine and balance the total school experience for the benefit of all our children.

The thing about just going back to basics is that if you just do that, you get a basic outcome!

Well that’s not good enough. We need wellinformed, thoughtful and caring young people, comfortable in their own skin with a clear, firm foundation of beliefs and values and confident to have a go at anything!

Middle School Try Day – tell your friends We are holding our very popular Middle School Try Day and Boarding Sleepover for new students interested in commencing in Years 5-8 in 2022. The sleepover will be held on Sunday, 14 March followed by the Try Day on Monday, 15 March.

These events are designed to allow new students to join classes, meet the teachers and get to know other students.

Junior School Mr Anthony Roohan Director of Junior School

It was wonderful to welcome and greet all of our students back last Thursday. We welcomed 32 new Kindergarten students to the Junior School and there was a mix of nerves and excitement as they entered their freshly renovated and furnished classrooms. In addition to our Kindergarten students, there are many new faces across the Junior School and I encourage all of our students to make them feel welcome and help them to settle in.

The soccer field has proven to be very popular, with many students taking to the field during break times whilst our younger students have enjoyed playing in the former Prep space which is a nice, quiet and calm area.

Our Prep students are enjoying their new classrooms and play space. The cubby house, slides and coconut rope are still to be installed and will complete this wonderful project.

I must also say a big ‘thank you’ to all of our parents for your help with book coverings. It’s a huge job but it assists us greatly in maintaining the quality of the books for the duration of the year.

Parent Information Nights Thank you to everyone who attended the Parent Information nights this week. We hope you enjoyed the opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and find out more about the year ahead.

Junior School Drop off/Pick Up Parents of students in K-4 should use the car park at the front of Esrom House behind the new black fencing.

Parents of Preparatory students should use the car park adjacent to the new Preparatory School.

Parents of K-2 students can pick up/drop off from the lawn at the front of the Junior School office but should remain physically distant and avoid prolonged mingling.

Now that the students have settled in we ask that parents pick up and drop off from this space.

Unless you are collecting your child/children in the afternoon, we ask that parents remain off campus grounds unless approved by the Head of Campus or Head of College to ensure we continue to keep our community safe.

Furthermore, I would like to remind everyone that supervision commences each morning at 8:25 am.

Junior School Swimming Carnival Our Junior School students have been busily preparing for the Swimming Carnival to be held on Friday 12 February. I’m sure everyone will be ready to do their best and earn some points for their team. Unfortunately parents will be unable to attend this year due to COVID restrictions. All K-4 students should wear their house shirt and swimming attire.

Kindergarten and Year 1 students will participate in their ‘Splash and Dash’ race across the pool at approximately 9:30 am with the more competitive age group events following.

All students 8 years and older will swim in at least the Freestyle event on the day. Students in Year 2 who are not turning 8 in 2020 will be involved in a noncompetitive race for 7-year-olds.

After School Care After School Care will continue to operate out of the previous space. We envisage the program will move to the Prep School site in a few weeks. Simply record in your child’s diary if you wish to use this service.

PE Lessons and Swimmers Students in Years 2-4 should continue bringing in their swimmers and a towel for PE lessons for the first five weeks. Kinder and Year 1 will have a final lesson next week for PE. Assemblies in 2021 Junior School Assemblies will be held every fortnight in 2021 and the first will be held on Friday 19 February.

Unfortunately parents will not be able to attend initially as part of our COVID Safety Plan. Assemblies are an opportunity to celebrate learning and effort across the school. Junior School Spirit awards will be presented at every assembly. This award is presented to a student from each class who has demonstrated behaviour and actions that correlate with the values of the school.

Endeavour awards will be presented to a student from each class who has demonstrated effort or improvement in his/her work habits and skills. Lion awards will also be presented to a student from each class for specific academic, social, cultural, sporting or behavioural improvement or excellence.

Home reading and morning reading Homework and home reading will commence next Monday. I encourage every student to read for at least ten minutes each night. Home Reading should be recorded each night in the relevant section of the diary.

K-2 students are also encouraged to read with their teacher before school. Teachers may introduce a roster system to assist coordinating this.

Commencement Service On Friday 5 February all students in the Junior and Middle Schools will attend our Commencement Service which will be held on the Chapel Lawn at 9:00 am. At this service we will be inducting our Year 8 Leaders and also announcing our Year 6 House Captains. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, parents are not permitted to attend this event.

Middle School Swimming Carnival This year we will be having our Middle School (5-8) Swimming Carnival on Wednesday 17 February at the College Pool. Students in the Middle School can come to school in their sports clothes (including their House shirt) on this day. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, parents are not permitted to attend this event.

Boarding House Captains Patrick Barnett Charlotte Mitchell Uniform – sports and PD/H/PE Middle School students can wear their sports uniform to and from school on Thursdays when we have Active Afternoons. On all other days of the week students are to wear full school uniform (including their formal hat in summer and blazer in winter) to and from school. On days when they have practical Personal Development/Health/Physical Education (PD/H/PE) lessons, students need to bring their sports uniform and get changed at the start and completion of the lesson. During the summer terms, students are required to bring their swimming clothes as well as sports clothes for practical PD/H/PE lessons.

Senior School Ms Tracey Leaf Deputy Head K-12/ Teaching and Learning

‘Day One’ of a new school year is always exciting and again this year it was wonderful to see the students arriving - a little taller, a little older and ready for a new academic year.

On behalf of the staff I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the Year 9 students and the new students in Years 9 to 11 who have joined us this year. In the Commencement Assembly the students were encouraged to “start as they mean to go on”, to set goals (academic, personal, spiritual) and to make the most of the opportunities that 2021 will present.

Students and staff were also reminded that as a Christian School, we believe that we are not on this journey alone. ‘Emmanuel, God with us’ is a great reminder at Christmas time, but also throughout the year as we journey into the unknown.

I would also like to welcome the staff who are new to Campus East: Mrs Bronwyn Jackson (Visual Art), Mr Luke Gilmer (Geography & Commerce), Mr Mark Wilkinson (Sports Administrator), Mrs Cassandra Pearce (Science) and Mrs Claire Spora (Term 1 replacement in English while Mrs Angela Davis is on leave). We are grateful for the blessing of knowledgeable and skilled staff as we continue our work of making Scots All Saints College a strong and effective learning community.

New Facilities A significant amount of work was undertaken on the campus during the holiday break and our heartfelt thanks go to Mr Jeff Reeks and the team for the many hours they put in to ensure the campus was ready for the start of Term One.

The newly established ‘Werona Agriculture Centre’, located near the campus farm is a wonderful addition to our agriculture program. The 'Safe Space’ was also developed during the break by Mr van Gend and Mrs McDonnell. Located on the ground floor of Cooerwull House, The Safe Space will be the home of our Invictus and Christian Studies Programs.

Uniform Matters The phase-in of the new SASC uniform is now complete and the students look fantastic. Thank you to parents for your efforts to ensure your students are now wearing the new uniform. Please note that students are required to wear the formal College hat to and from school.

Student Wellbeing Mr Tom van Gend Head of Student Wellbeing K-12

Today’s adolescents are growing up in a world vastly different from that of their parents. Life in contemporary Australia features “cultural pluralism, increased anxiety about personal and environmental risks, precarious employment, rampant consumerism, the information deluge, greater individualisation and increased instability in families” (Hughes, 2007). It is within this societal context that we are aiming to facilitate the journey of our students toward resilient adulthood.

The Invictus Wellbeing Institute is based in Australia and is partnered with Beyond Blue and Deakin University. The institute offers programs, training and research support to educational organisations. Invictus programs are being delivered in a growing numbers of schools in Australia, New Zealand and – more recently – in Europe.

The Invictus Wellbeing Classic Program is being delivered in 2021 to Year 10 students, while an Extended Program designed to be presented over two years has commenced with Year 9 students. Both programs invite students to participate in a rite of passage that uses memory events and explicit teaching to help embed the latest findings from positive psychology in order to help young people flourish. In a culture that can be difficult to navigate, Invictus teaches students that, rather than being the passive victims of circumstance, they have the freedom and agency to chart their own course towards a fulfilling life. Invictus Program is designed to equip students with a skill set that allows them to maintain a sense of positive wellbeing in the face of life’s challenges. The Program is built upon a strong theoretical framework which takes advantage of Dr Martin Seligman’s seminal work in positive psychology.

The programs are divided into four focus areas, or elements.

• People who respect themselves and their community are likely to develop and enjoy positive relationships. The Network element of the Invictus Wellbeing Program seeks to give students specific skills in order to empathise with the people around them. This element encourages participants to reflect on their own relationships and the ways in which other people can benefit from their company. Positive relationships are essential in any school or workplace and students who complete this element are well positioned to maximise their social cohesion and positive relationships.

• Mastering a new skill is an incredibly satisfying experience. The Master element of the Invictus Program seeks to cultivate practical skill. Students are encouraged to cultivate individual talents, therefore experiencing a sense of mastery, selfconfidence and mindfulness.

• Life requires us all to change, to grow and to discover. The Journey element gives young people the opportunity to experience the benefits of planning and preparation in order to manage change and enjoy growth. The element fosters self-reliance in a supportive context and allows participants to develop their personal decision making skills in order to equip students for the many adventures that await them in the future • Serving others lays the foundation for a vibrant and harmonious community. Service deactivates self-centered behaviour and brings satisfaction to both the provider and the recipient. True service is an act of partnership and does not demean the beneficiary. Intentionally structuring the Invictus Wellbeing Program with Service as the final element allows participants to practically apply their prior skills. By engaging in service participants gain an outward focused and holistic worldview. Every act of service ushers in a better world. continued page 7

Invictus work is deliberately tactile and off-screen. Journals are used by students to record their responses to questions posed during activities as well as their thoughts and reflections as they move through each element.

Within the Invictus Wellbeing Program, students are invited to voluntarily work towards the recognition of a university-endorsed Invictus Award. By completing challenges during any two elements students receive a bronze award, three elements leads to a silver award, and all four elements entitles the student to a gold award.

As mentioned previously, elements are anchored by 'memory events' that take place outside of the classroom schedule. These are compulsory events that serve to reinforce learnings and to foster memories associated with each element to better enable students to access the knowledge and skills they acquired during the program in the future. The memory events for 2021 are set out below:

To ensure consistency and quality of presentation, I will be presenting the courses for all Year 9 and Year 10 classes.

This will enable me to develop and refine program activities for our specific context and to ensure that all students experience a consistent interpretation and presentation of activities. I am very much looking forward to this terrific opportunity for me to develop positive relationships with all students as they navigate Stage 5.

Parents and Friends News A big hello and welcome to all current and new parents to the College from the Parents & Friends Association.

We trust you all had super break and refresher over the summer and Christmas period. 2021 for the Parents and Friends of SASC … well let’s see where it takes us! The intention for this is not to sound direction-less!

A big welcome back from the library staff at Scots All Saints.

Our libraries are staffed this year by Ms Cate Mitchell, Ms Gisele Williams, Mrs Lucinda Wells and Mrs Margaret Mackay.

About our libraries…..

The H J Richardson Library (Campus West Saints), caters for students in the Junior and Middle Schools with every class having a formal library lesson each week. These lessons cover areas such as literature, topic related research and information skills and digital citizenship. The students are actively encouraged to borrow from our extensive fiction and non-fiction collections. Our Year 7 and 8 students have a timetabled reading lesson each cycle where they are introduced to a wide range of both new and classic titles.

The Cameron Library (Campus East Scots), is a completely refurbished space catering for students from Year 9 through to Year 12. In addition to timetabled reading lessons in the English or Year 9 LEAP program, classes from different subject areas come to research and receive assistance with information skills relevant to specific assignments.

The seminar rooms are used by our Year 11 and 12 students on study lines.

Our information literacy program focuses on the provision of opportunities for our students to acquire both information skills and to develop inquiring minds to enable them to become lifelong learners in an ever-changing world.

We also promote a culture of reading across the College through a varied collection of print fiction and non-fiction books as well as a growing collection of ebooks, audio books and graphic novels.

Both libraries are well equipped with photocopier/ printers, laminating machines, laptops and ipads. In addition we have a large collection of magazines, games and jigsaw puzzles for lunchtime activities.

24/7 Library Access A reminder that students are able and indeed encouraged to access our library website pages from home. These pages provides a gateway to resources such as online encyclopedias and databases, pathfinders (resources collated for specific topics and assignments), an ebook and audiobook collection, referencing and research skills guidance and our library catalogue – Oliver which provides links to quality websites. The simplest way to access the library pages is via the links button on the CANVAS homepage Our annual Literature Festival is a celebration of reading and creative writing. This year’s festival will be held on the 7, 8 and 9 June. Watch this space for more information as the time draws closer!

SASC Sheep Show Team The College has recently purchased six stud-quality Australian White ewes from Tattykeel and is starting a sheep show team as a result.

This team will be involved in all aspects of flock management and will have the opportunity to halter-train and exhibit these ewes at both Blayney and Bathurst shows, as well as participate in the Merino Wether Challenge.

Any students from Years 9 or 10 who are interested in joining are to come and see myself or Mrs Dawes by the end of the week at the latest to collect a permission note. Alternatively, feel free to email me if you have any questions at alister.meek@scotsallsaints. nsw.edu.au

This year we continue to offer quality After School Care to students of Kindergarten to Year 6 from 3:15 to 6:00 pm on school days.

The exciting news is that After School Care will soon operate from a classroom in our new Preparatory School which will make pick up easy. Until we have finalized the building project in that room After School Care will operate out of the same venue as it did last year (the green fenced area below the library).

Please indicate in your child’s Student Diary if you wish for your child to attend After School Care on that day.

After School Care incurs a $10 charge per student or $15 per family per day.

Preparatory School (Pre-K) students will be supervised by Preparatory School staff until 5:00 pm. If Prep students stay after 5:00 pm they will be signed in to After School Care and a charge of $10 will be incurred.

COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe Dear Parents and Carers, Once again we are experiencing an easing of restrictions and are able to enjoy an increased sense of normality.

With this in mind there are a few small changes being made to the way we are doing things here at school.

From now on, parents will be able to attend the uniform shop during its opening hours without first booking an appointment. There is a uniform shop specific QR code in place and all parents and carers who enter the uniform shop are required to scan the code and sign in. If you are unable to use a smart phone to sign in you must first present to reception and sign in there.

Parents are to make their way between the carpark and the uniform shop and back as quickly as possible and must not progress past the uniform shop and further onto campus.

We are also permitted to host parents within the College outside of school hours which means that parents will be able to attend for some information nights, P&F meetings and some social events. The NSW Government has permitted these after-hours events so that parents can keep in touch with Schools whilst still separating parents and children for infection control purposes.
