Preparing for a New Year While our primary focus has been on managing the care and delivery of education to all our children throughout 2021, especially challenging because of COVID-19 restrictions, we have spent considerable time planning for the future.

Schools are in some ways “ever changing but never changing”. There are things that stay the same, while around us, there is constant change.

Managing and supporting the academic, emotional, social and physical growth of young people has and will continue to be a “never changing” part of a school’s role. The overall educational experience of the curriculum, through changing syllabuses and teaching approaches, the information of teaching and learning technologies is “ever changing”.

To balance all of these requirements, 21st century schools need to constantly review operations, structures, approaches, resources, both human and physical, to meet the ever changing needs of both the current and future generations of students.

The 2022 school year is just a few months away, but we are preparing for it now.

• Supporting our children through orientation programs begins next week.

We look forward to welcoming our 200 new children to our orientation day programs.

• Employing highly qualified staff across all areas is virtually completed, and we look forward to introducing them in the New Year.

• Providing programs of the highest quality and purpose will see expansion of many, including: Invictus, Biblical Education, Peer Support and Student Services.

On current projections, Scots All Saints will welcome almost 900 pupils, spread across our two beautiful sites for 2022.

The College is keenly focused on the New Year… something to look forward to.

Psalm 139 – A call to action and a plea for help 19

Surely, God, you will slay the wicked!

Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty!

They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name.

Do I not hate those who hate you, LORD, and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?

I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies.

As we continue our journey through Psalm 139, we come now to the second last section. In the above verses, King David’s words may come across as harsh, unloving, and even a little self-righteous. What David is highlighting for the reader is the tension between the holiness of God and the wickedness of humanity. Many of us have echoed David’s sentiment when watching injustice on the nightly news or even seeing evil on the street. We feel helpless, and often, we can only hope the perpetrators of crime will face the consequences of their actions.

This is what David is saying here. Even though he is King, he also is helpless. He cries out to God to do something about the injustice in the world and reminds God that he is on His side. As we shall find out when we read next week’s verses, David realises that the problem of evil doesn’t just exist out there – within the community, but also within his own heart. These verses above are both a call to action – “God, do something about the evil within this world”, and the verses that follow on from this are a plea – reminding God that despite David’s own ‘bloodthirstiness’, ‘evil intent’, and ‘rebellion’, he longs to be forgiven and to be in a relationship with God. David would die long before his desire was fulfilled in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.

As Christians, we acknowledge the corruption of this world and our own individual contribution to it.

However, the good news of the Gospel is that God’s judgment upon our ‘bloodthirstiness’, ‘evil intent’ and ‘rebellion’ is placed upon Christ, and in God's mercy, Christ's perfection is placed upon us. David’s desire was fulfilled through him.

STEM solving success 6G have been enjoying testing out the Lego Spike Prime Kits during STEM Lessons.

Students are engaged in hands-on learning experiences and are encouraged to think critically, and problem solve. Students have created and programmed using coding break dancing robots, safes, motorbikes and transporters, to name a few.

All Things Sport Mr Mark Wilkinson Sports Administrator

Hi there sports fans. Well, that was weird, wasn’t it?

The first full week of sport since August that wasn’t affected by wet weather or COVID. We’ll have some more of that please!

Junior School Active Afternoons As the current set of COVID restrictions don’t allow us to mix year groups, we’ve changed the structure of our Junior School Active Afternoon's program for the remainder of Term 4. Every Friday afternoon, year groups will have the opportunity to try a different sport. We’re talking Tennis, Basketball skills, Cricket skills, Dance and Brazilian Ju Jitsu!

Junior teams competing in local basketball and cricket competitions will continue to train during Active Afternoons.

As soon as the restrictions allow us to mix year groups, we’ll move back to our regular Active Afternoon's program, where students will enjoy the sport or activity they selected back at the beginning of the Summer season on a weekly basis.

2021 Middle School Triathlon Our famous Middle School Triathlon will be held on Campus West on Thursday, 2 December. We’re encouraging all Middle School students to give our 2021 Triathlon a red-hot go! The event is held on campus, and there are team and individual competitions that students can enter.

It’s free, and it’s a seriously fun way to end the year.

Before Parents / Guardians give permission, they must be confident that their child can swim 75m (Years 3 & 4) or 125m (Years 5 & 6) or 175m ( Years 7 & 8) unaided in both deep and shallow water.

Unfortunately, parents will be unable to spectate this year.

Here’s how things will work…

Swim leg - Students may wear College swimmers or other appropriate swimmers for the swim leg.

Goggles and a swimming cap are optional.

Bike leg – Students remain in their swimmers, and all must wear their House shirts. Students must have fully enclosed joggers. An approved cycling helmet that fits correctly must be worn for the cycle leg. Bicycles must be road worthy and appropriate for riding on a grass surface.

Mountain bikes would be most suitable. Bikes must arrive in excellent working condition. Please ensure that your child’s bike has working brakes, tyres pumped up and suitable handlebar grips.

Bikes that are not roadworthy will not be considered for competition. During the race, helmets must be on and secured before students get on their bikes. Helmets must not be taken off until students dismount their bikes.

Run leg – Students remain in their swimwear and their House shirts with fully enclosed joggers.

Students will also need to bring a towel and Sunscreen.

This sounds super fun. I wish I was a kid again!

Holiday Greetings In our last note for this year, I would like to take the opportunity to wish all of our students and families a wonderful Christmas and a relaxing holiday break. Let us hope that 2022 will be a smoother school year!

Expressions of Interest for College Sheep Team The College Sheep Team is seeking expressions of interest from students interested in being involved in the 2022 program.

Australian Mathematics Competition In mid-August 2021, some selected students in Years 6 to 11 competed in the Australian Mathematics Competition. The main focus of this competition is to encourage students to become better problem solvers in school to be creative solution finders in life. The competition reaches a global audience and attracts more than 250 000 entries each year. In 2021, we had a total of 168 Scots All Saints students enter the competition. This was an amazing turnout, and I would like to thank every student for their participation in this prestigious competition.

Our highest performer, “Best in School”, was Cameron Bogle Year 8, receiving a High Distinction in the Junior

French Language meets Visual Arts Year 8 Visual Artists narrate their works in French!

This past term, Year 8 has been working on various cubist artworks inspired by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. This has allowed students to explore and understand the context of the French language through a real language situation. It is very exciting that we are able to learn about art through the French language and vice versa. Using innovative VR technology, we can present handmade artworks through a virtual gallery, as well as audio descriptions prepared and articulated in French. One of the main focuses is the encouragement of communication in French, using art as a vehicle.

Year 8 students have had the opportunity to research and respond to guided questions, learn vocabulary and acquire the skills to write, and describe their artworks in French. Many have said that it helped them escape the reality of COVID around them and it was very relaxing to create the artworks.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED TO MARSDEN SCHOOL? articles, a Festival Weekend and a Saturday Morning Fete, Chapel services and many other special events took place during the year. On Monday 15 September Marsden celebrated its 50th Birthday with a traditional Birthday cake trimmed in the School colours of blue and gold.

This was a question asked many times over a period of at least 30 years after Marsden was closed, and there was never a real answer given, until 1977 when Marsden merged with All Saints’ College.

Marsden had just celebrated its 50th year in 1975, marked as the year when Mrs Kate Chivers replaced Marsden’s longest-serving Headmistress Miss Margaret Glover (Auntie Marg). Mrs Chivers commented on her role, saying ‘After nine years of teaching at Marsden, I knew what I was taking on when I accepted the position as Headmistress. It has been a very busy year, but a heartwarming one.’

At the outset of 1976, Marsden Church of England Girls’ School had an enrolment of 170 girls. One of the major tests she had to face was organising celebrations to mark Marsden’s fifty years. The girls welcomed them as they provided opportunities for excursions and also the chance to wear casual clothes. It was also the year the Marsden ladies beat the Scots First X1 in cricket! The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme also continued to motivate many students during the year.

Ever since the scheme started in 1968 in total, including 1975, 200 girls had gained their Bronze Award, 142 their Silver and 30 their Gold. By 1976 35 girls had received their Gold award. A fine effort for such a small school!

The end of 1976 saw, what was unfortunately, the final Speech Day of Marsden School. Despite a decline in enrollment over a few years, few present at this Speech Day realised that this was the last such gathering.

Thursday, February 17 1977, could have been a routine teaching day at Marsden, but it wasn’t. ‘It was a day of vivid recollections of traumatic happenings coloured by a whole gamut of emotions’. Staff and students were to assemble in the dining room at midday, so something ‘out of the ordinary’ was afoot. The announcement from Bishop E.K. Leslie, ‘that in view of the drastic reduction in the number of enrolments that Marsden cannot continue on its present basis after the end of first term’

was delivered. It wasn’t until Bishop Leslie announced that All Saints’ College and Marsden would merge, thus becoming All Saints’ College (incorporating Marsden School), it actually started to mean something. The financial difficulties caused by decreased enrolments overshadowed Marsden and other Independent Schools through the rural recession of the early seventies. Despite the larger debt, All Saints’ College was considered to be economically more viable.

Many different bodies mobilised to try to keep Marsden operating, with numerous meetings held to produce a more satisfactory alternative to the merger. The idea that the P. and F. buy Marsden was explored, but they were met with considerable challenges in that the suggested purchase price was considered to be excessive and that ‘they would not be given the first option to buy’. As a result, the possibility of Marsden continuing was no longer feasible. On realising that the parents could not produce a satisfactory plan to keep the school open, those connected with Marsden unhappily accepted that closure was inevitable.
