The end of the school year and the approach of Christmas is a time for thoughtful reflection. For our children, a whole year has passed.

Everyone is different, a little taller, smarter, wiser! The year 2020 will always be remembered for the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

This uninvited guest turned our world upside down. But through it all our community has worked closely together so that as we come to the end of this school year, our children are all safe and well and have flourished.

As Christmas approaches with restrictions on our lives further eased, we have time to look forward to the joy and the meaning of this time of celebration. The pandemic might have impacted on much, but it has not changed Christmas!

As we prepare to close the school year, from all of us to all of you, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Might Christ be central to our celebration.

Music Showcase The Performing Arts Academy’s 2020 Digital Music Showcase is almost here and we are excited to share this LIVE with our community.

Over 200 musicians from the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools will entertain you across a range of ensembles and musical styles presenting a year’s worth of passion, hard work and achievement!

The College media students, led by Mr Thomas Druitt, have captured some special angles and shots and I know you will enjoy being immersed in our program!

Congratulations to the many staff and our amazing students who have combined across 2020 to create an amazing showcase we will never forgot. Enjoy the show!

Dear Mr Weeks, Many thanks for your leadership over the past term and a big thank you to all the teachers and staff for their dedication to all the children. Our children started at SASC this year, and we are so grateful that they are at a school with such a caring and nurturing environment and with an enhanced emphasis on learning and co-curricular activities.

I think the initiative shown in getting the kids back into the classroom as soon as possible, and the new sports program, have been very well received (especially in our household) and we just wanted to pass on our appreciation for making these tough decisions.

As 2020 draws to a close…

In reflecting on a year that will no doubt stay in our memories for quite a while, I was drawn to an article I wrote that appeared in The Roar at the end of Term 1 – when we were coming to terms with a world, country, state and region that was still adjusting to the shutting down of so many things in our lives that we were used to taking for granted.

In the article, I chose to present “the world according my family”, in the hope that in sharing our story, other families could see parallels in how they were adjusting to the ‘new normal’. As 2020 draws to a close, please permit me to update you on what the year has brought to my immediate family, along with some associated thoughts as we enter the festive season.

My wonderful wife, Virginia, celebrated a milestone birthday back in May. I am not willing to divulge the actual number of candles on the cake, but suffice to say that she was less than thrilled with the marker celebration. Virginia commenced a fitness regime on the same weekend as various restrictions started being put into place back at the end of February.

She has maintained this regime, through a combination of swimming, walking and pilates classes, every single day to the present. Through winter and its negative degree mornings, through sunshine, rain and – on a couple of occasions – hail, she has been up and moving before 5:30 am. She is a machine and I am totally in awe of her. It is one of the greatest blessings of my life that we have shared more than 26 years of marriage.

My older son Rob celebrated his 18th birthday with our immediate family. Other family and friends joined us via the internet. He was finally able to celebrate in person in July. He and Sophie – his girlfriend from Coffs Harbour – are still going strong, in spite of the pressures that distance and restrictions to travel placed on their relationship.

Last Saturday we were able to join him for his graduation celebrations at Stannies. He has accepted an early offer to study Civil Engineering and Surveying at the University of Newcastle, and has also received an early offer for accommodation.

One of our two 'beamish boys' (check your Lewis Carroll) is about to embark on his own life journey away from the nest and this realisation has been a tough one. His years with us have passed in what seems a blink of an eye and I would give half of all I own to have them over again.

The other half would be spent on re-living my sixteen-plus years with Rob’s 'little' brother Will – all six feet four inches of him. Will’s passion is the preparation and showing of cattle. His first and only opportunity to do this in 2020 was at Blayney Show back in February. However, his pool game has dramatically improved and he has taught himself leatherworking as well. He has rediscovered the joy of striking a solid drive with just a hint of draw over the ravine that runs across the course downhill from the second tee at Bathurst Golf Club. He plays cricket for his school on Saturday mornings, and with St Pats in a President’s Cup team (with some of the boys from Scots All Saints) on Saturday afternoons. He is still working on his 1974 Hilux Ute, and will soon start mowing and baling the oats crop that he sowed into our paddocks at home. On top of all this, he completed his Year 11 studies and has embarked on his final year of secondary education.

I did complete my re-imagining of the study and then found that I had too much 'stuff' for it all to fit, so the project has now spread into the garage. I figure that if I can’t visit theme parks for now, I’ll build my own model theme park instead. Lego provides plenty of scope for creativity combined with engineering here, and it also uses the numerous crates of sets that Rob and Will accumulated while they were growing up.

So much for events, what about thoughts?

reminders that amongst the hardships, there is still cause for celebration and for hope.

I am well aware that one of the reasons that Rob received early offers for tertiary study is the continued restrictions on international students coming to Australia to study. With less than a week of school to go this year, the overseas students here at Scots All Saints still face a very uncertain future. Some of them are not returning home for the holidays, as this would mean that they will be unable to return to Australia next year. They will soon have been in a different country away from their loved ones for over a year. I ask that we all keep these boys and girls and their families in our thoughts and prayers.

After the eerie, isolated Easter we all experienced with households ordered to stay away from each other, Christmas is looking as if it should be a better time. By its very nature Christmas is a time of hope and promise and I pray that both of these are realised in a better world situation in 2021 – a year in which we see the shrinking and eventual demise of the virus that has caused hardship, pain and grief for so many in so many different ways.

While 2020 has been a year of restrictions, in many ways it has provided opportunity for growth, and for thankfulness. We of the older generations have grasped the nettle of technology to learn news ways to work, to communicate, to socialise and to entertain ourselves and others (note that I stop short of including Zoom Karaoke here). Many of us have taken up new hobbies or rediscovered the joys of old ones. We have a renewed appreciation of the beauty of our own region and state for travel and holidays. After years of drought and the devastation of the bushfires last summer, we have received good and frequent rain. For the first time in 25 years of residence in the Central West, I can see lawn and gardens surrounding our home (all due to Virginia’s efforts rather than mine) Many of our families are enjoying their best harvest in a very long time. All of these little victories are

I thank all College staff for their continued and excellent care for our students in this most singular of years, and particularly thank our Head of College, Mr John Weeks and our Heads of Campus, Ms Tracey Leaf and Mr Chris Jackman, for their wise leadership and guidance in an educational environment that has been one of constant change. In a year of restrictions, our College has also been fortunate to have experienced growth and development in many different areas.

I am very grateful to all of our College families for your confidence in us and for allowing us to spend this year with your wonderful, beamish boys and girls. From my family to yours, best wishes for a Christmas celebrated and enjoyed with family and friends. We hope that your New Year is HAPPY – in so many ways.

Senior Campus Inter House Carnival and Athletics On Tuesday 1 December we held a Senior Campus Inter House Carnival including some athletics. In anticipation of a warm day, our students were well advised of the need to prepare for the heat and we are pleased to advise that the students and staff followed the advice and we got through the day without any issues. It is a real credit to the students and staff for their attitude and common sense to protect themselves from the sun with sunscreen, wearing a hat, seeking shade when possible and drinking plenty of water. The morning sessions saw the bulk of the track and field events contested. We also had a ‘rap challenge’ during the recess break.

We have some very talented and emerging ‘rappers’ who were very willing to rip out a few verses about sun protection and skin cancer on the mic! The event was won by Cowan House.

Other novelty type events included the inter house tug of war, won by Booth House, the sack race relay won by Dunlop House and the Bus poetry recital also won by Dunlop House. Apart from the students enjoying the ‘sprinkler cool down’ during lunch break the highlight of the afternoon session was the Inter House relays. We had very closely contested open male and female races and a very exciting 6 by 100m mixed relay where each house had a male and female representative from each year group. The

way the students represented and supported their houses was amazing.

Again, we thank the staff for their roles with officiating, data collecting and supervising at the carnival. Special thanks to Mr Gardner and Mr Bailey from the PE team for getting things set up.

We are also very appreciative of the efforts of the maintenance staff for preparing the McKibbin Oval. It is without doubt the best it has looked in a very long time, possibly ever! Finally, a big thank you to the students, led by their house captains for the attitude and manner in which they enjoyed the day.

Any additional training sessions for 1st teams on the Senior Campus will be additional after school.

There will be the need for students (current Years 8 – 11) who are in activities other than Core Sports to select their activity for Term 1, 2021. We hope to be able to provide a wider range of activities and some students have expressed an interest to change activities. Students will be sent a Google Form through their school email account and are asked to complete their choice by the end of Term 4.

Macquarie Care Visit On Thursday some talented Middle School musicians from the Scots All Saints College Amadeus Academy had the opportunity to perform for the residents of the Macquarie Care Centre.

It was the first time this year the students have been able to connect with the residents and entertain them. The musicians gave the residents lots of Christmas cards from the Stage 3 students, wishing them well for the festive season and New Year. Well done to Patrick, William, Sam, Leo and Charlie for their playing and thank you to Mr Jon Clipsham and Ms Elizabeth Sargeant for their conducting and accompaniment.

Board Game Day Last Friday, our Junior School students took part in a Board Game Day. The Board Game Day was the final component of our Public Speaking Program for 2020 and there were plenty of skills on display across our classrooms along with lots of fun and laughter. Students were encouraged to bring along their favourite board game and settle in for a session of fun, problem solving, critical thinking and communication. It was great to see the concentration, language and teamwork skills, problem solving and sportspersonship that was on display. It sure was a lot of fun.

Triathlon Our amazing students in the Junior and Middle School this week had the opportunity to participate in the West Campus triathlon. Competitor numbers were healthy with over 180 students involved as either an individual participant or as part of a team. For anyone who has competed in a triathlon before, they will know that this event can be particularly challenging. Competitors will have their strengths and weaknesses and whilst one leg of the race may be a breeze, another leg can be particularly demanding. Usually in all cases, through their awe-inspiring effort, competitors are exhausted by the completion of the race. Congratulations to all of the students who were able to dig a little deeper and step momentarily out of their comfort zones, just by participating. “Stepping out of your comfort zone is the best way to grow” (livelifehappy).

Matilda off to LA following Vocal Stars audition On 28 November, Year 8 student and boarder Matilda (Tilly) Poole auditioned for Vocal Stars.

The Vocal Star Program consists of working with famous recording artists, receiving online branding and marketing support, Q & A’s with industry professionals, song selection, image development, professional dance instructors, recording, performances, and media training.

The music talent event culminates in a lavish finale awards show and banquet dinner.

The audition process included a performance via zoom where Tilly had to sing and accompany herself for several of the music industry’s top coaches including George Caceres. George is a business developer and entrepreneur, #1 best-selling author, film producer, creator of Vocal Star, and business strategist. Tilly spent many hours rehearsing for peers, teachers and mentors to hone her skills. With a final sound check on the Friday before the audition, Tilly was ready to flex her vocal muscles.

At 5:00 pm that afternoon Tilly received an email indicating that she had successfully made it through the audition. The audition process consisted of over 300 applicants worldwide. Tilly had progressed through multiple interviews and auditions and as a result of her hard work and talent she will jet off to Los Angeles in July 2021 for the experience of a lifetime.

The Vocal Star team were so impressed with Tilly’s audition that they reached out to personally offer her a GOLD package which includes a six-day direct event in Los Angeles. Once in LA, Tilly will be involved in vocal training, showcase events and receive tips and techniques from industry professionals at top record labels including celebrity producers and musicians.

On behalf of the Scots All Saints community we wish to congratulate Tilly on her hard work and success. Good Luck in Los Angeles next year and most importantly, have fun!

Year 7 Outdoor Recreation and Adventure Camp

Last week Year 7 students enjoyed a 3 day/2 night Outdoor Education Group (OEG) camp at Wombaroo, north west of Mittagong NSW, participating in activities such as low ropes, high ropes, a vertical challenge, canoeing, orienteering, and other team based initiatives. These included a spider maze, mini Olympics and music trivia challenge. The students also enjoyed bushwalking, camp cooking and toasting marshmallows around a campfire.

The camp venue provided a refreshing outdoor adventure experience in a natural and pristine bush setting. The aim of the camp was to provide students with a sense of community and belonging, to develop respect and care for others, self-worth and confidence, and also give them the tools to improve their communication, physical and recreational skills. The students returned with a personal sense of achievement and further developed their appreciation of the Australian bush, its flora, fauna and waterways.

Accompanying the students were their Year 7 Core teachers: Mrs Catherine Dundon, Mr Hugh Hunter, Mrs Michelle Simcock, Ms Stacey Tomlinson and Year 7 teacher, Mrs Bronwyn Jackson.

Some student reflections: “After playing games we went to the vertical challenge first. It was so much fun. We had harnesses on, and we climbed up a tall structure while our team helped pull us up. It was my favourite activity. There were heaps of challenges to do on the high ropes like trying to hold a cup full of water and not spilling it whilst going around the

whole course. After our time was up on the course, we went back to play more games like kick tennis.”

Eden Azar “After orienteering we started setting up for our campout that night. I was in a tent with Sophie.

Setting up the tent was pretty easy. After that we went on a bushwalk to the bush church. It was a very peaceful and calm environment where we could reflect on the past couple of days. We got back to our campsite and began cooking our dinner.” Sritha Atluri When we went to the dam to do canoeing, we played Capture the Flag, Stinky Fish and Conquer the World. That was where you had to make all the canoes belong to your country. Oliver Campbell “For camp Wombaroo I was expecting that in most of the activities I wouldn’t make it through to the end or the top but I figured out that if you believe you can do something then you are more likely to excel in that challenge. One of my main fears is heights and for many years I have been afraid of going up to the very top of the high ropes course or the vertical challenge but at camp Wombaroo I overcame a little bit of fear with the help of Mrs Dundon.

In Music Trivia the group leaders would ask a question and we would have to find the answer in the song. Once we knew the answer we had to find the hidden group leader and tell them the answer.

They would then determine how many points we would get. In the middle of these rounds there were fun challenges that would earn us bonus points.”

Then you started climbing up a rope spider-web then up three large distanced logs. The final bit of the course was iron bars that we had to grab then pull ourselves up to reach the next step. I really enjoyed doing this activity because it tested my strength and when we came down it was like we were floating." Jaiden Cogdell "After lunch we went off to our first activity which was the vertical challenge. Two people were climbing and behind each person was a team pulling them/assisting them up the vertical challenge. Our group did lots of little challenges like each side having races to the top and each side pulling the person’s dead weight up to the top." Ally Duffell "The two activities I was least excited about were canoeing and orienteering. It turns out that they were my favourites. Orienteering was interesting. Orienteering was like a big treasure hunt. You had to go around the entire camp looking for a plaque with a number on it. Then you would write down a code. It was competitive as well, adding to the fun. Canoeing was fun as well. In the pond where we were doing it we played games. It required you to work as a team with each other, making it feel rewarding and fun." Alexander Goddard "Once we arrived at the camp, we were greeted by Clare, the OEG (Outdoor Education Group) camp coordinator.

She took us through some safety procedures and took us through a few games to stretch our legs. We split into our groups and were introduced to our group leaders. I had an instructor named Keilin; I liked her a lot, she was really nice. We came up with a group name. I wanted us to be called Pineapple Socks, but we settled on The Silly Salmons, with a call-and-response of Keilin saying ‘Silly’ then we all did a ‘Silly Salmon’ wiggle, trying to see who could do it the best." Isabella Irvine "Once everyone had finished the High Ropes we all said goodbye to Tannah and headed back to the dining hall. In the dining hall, we reunited with all of the groups to have a lunch of snags together. Even though it was nearly time to go, we squeezed in Mini Olympics. Over & Under, PFD Races & Skipping Rope were some of the activities included. Winners were announced, Group Leaders were thanked and then we were on our way back! Overall, Camp Wombaroo was an amazing opportunity to overcome fears, experience new things and be with friends in the outdoors." Deliah Wu

Reflection on Triumphs and Tribulations for Students With the end of the year fast approaching it is a good time to reflect on your approach to school this year and what you have learnt from the challenges you faced. COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe Dear Parents and Carers, We’ve officially made it to the final COVID-19 update for the 2020 school year. Once again I would like to thank the entire college community for your cooperation under trying circumstances this year.

This weeks’ update is really just a few points on how our presentation day assemblies will work in terms of COVID-19. Please take a few moments to familiarise yourselves with this information as doing so will make things more comfortable on the day.

• Please don’t attend any ceremony if you’re unwell or have been instructed to self-isolate.

• Each family may have two people attend for presentation day. Where those two people share the same household, we ask that you are seated together. Where the two guests don’t share the same household there will be individual seats available. This is to ensure that we maintain social distancing whilst also maximising the seats available for guests. Please don’t move the chairs.

• Upon arrival please park and make your way to the ceremony. You will notice marquees set up with tables.

Where possible, please use your smartphone to scan the QR code and enter your details (the same procedure as has been used in restaurants and clubs for some time now). For anyone who has trouble with this, there will be a paper form for you to complete. Once you have signed in, please use the hand sanitiser provided and make your way to your seat.

• After the ceremony please make your way back to your vehicle quickly to prevent large groups of people mingling.

• NSW Health also requires that we remind you that private end of year social events need to be hosted according to all public health orders.

• The ceremonies will be held outside. Please bring your hat, sunscreen and a water bottle. In the event of rain the ceremonies will be moved inside and unfortunately will not be able to be attended by parents or carers. If this happens we will advise you.

• Boarding parents are welcome to enter boarding houses to assist their children with packing. Again, we ask that you use your smart phone to sign into the boarding houses.
