A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Year 12 – 2021 We have reached the half-way point of the 2021 HSC. So far, it’s been ‘smooth sailing’ with no COVID-19 issues of concern.

Each day, groups of Year 12 have arrived early, wellprepared, positive and supportive of each other! They are remarkable young people, given the many disruptions and uncertainties they have faced.

And, good news… no, GREAT news is now arriving as universities release unconditional, early course offers based upon Trial HSC results and other information submitted months ago!

So far, for courses ranging from accounting, medicine, law, teaching, international studies, psychology, engineering, nursing, sciences; Year 12 students are being offered positions from all universities across NSW/ACT. So far, 70% of Year 12s have an unconditional offer. Congratulations!

STEM Week at the Senior School The integration of skills and knowledge gained from individual subjects to solve real-world problems is a key focus of our teaching and learning philosophy here at Scots All Saints.

Psalm 139: Mind Blowing!

17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!

18 Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand – when I awake, I am still with you.

One of the hallmarks of Western Society is to simplify things down so that we can manage the sheer volume of information that confronts us each day. For many years, I worked in television, creating Christian programs. One of the constant challenges was how do I share the gospel in such a way that it is simple enough that anyone could understand it while at the same time not dumbing it down to such a level that it is no longer the gospel. If this is a challenge when communicating God’s message, how much more complicated is it to understand the thoughts of God? This is King David’s (1000 BC) point in the above verses. As he ponders God’s thoughts, he is ‘blown away’. So overwhelmed, he falls asleep from sheer exhaustion.

In our current cultural climate, self-reflection is the dominant spiritual practice. Modern technology and

communication platforms dominate our lives, such as the iPhone, social media, internet algorithms that analyse our web searches, and self-help books. And so, both David’s practice and his conclusion are foreign to many of us.

You’ll note as David reflects upon God, he is ‘blown away’ and falls asleep. Yet when he awakes, he still finds himself still in community and relationship. In contrast, our selfindulgent culture tends to leave a person feeling isolated and alone despite their hundreds of Facebook friends.

This of course does not need to be the case. We can know far more about God than David could possibly imagine, as God has revealed himself through the life and work of Jesus Christ. As the Apostle Paul points out in Colossians 2:9, the fullness of God was pleased to dwell in his son.

This does not mean that we know everything about God, but rather we know enough to enter into a real and lasting relationship with him.

Like King David, the 18th Century hymn writer Isaac Watts also reflected upon the thoughts of God as he pondered the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He wrote: “When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride (or, ‘upon all my selfindulgent-reflection’!). … Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.”

Amen.

Farewell Mrs Hughes

It was about this time last year that we wished Mrs Hughes and her husband Martin well as they prepared for the arrival of baby Brody. Twelve months later, we’re wishing Karen, Martin, and Brody well as they return home to Scotland. Mrs Hughes (then Miss Arthurs) joined us in 2018 and will be fondly remembered for her caring and engaging approach with all students. She was a valuable and talented member of our teaching staff and will be dearly missed.

Orientation Days

Stage 2, 3 and 4 Triathlon- Thursday 2 December The School triathlon for students in Stages 2, 3 and 4 will be held on Thursday, 2 December.

Students are invited to participate as an individual participant or as a part of a team. The event will be held in the school swimming pool and the bike and run legs on Watson Oval. It is an exciting event, and we encourage all students to be involved in some capacity, although it is not compulsory. Mrs Nelson will visit classrooms next week to discuss the event and answer questions.

A detailed letter will also be sent to parents in the coming days. I encourage all Stage 2 students to consider entry in this exciting event.

Junior School Presentation Day Assembly Friday 3 December

Prep School We are looking forward to our 2022 Prep classes taking part in their Orientation Days next week. Children should wear comfortable clothes with enclosed shoes and bring a water bottle, broad-brimmed hat and a healthy nutfree morning tea. Parents can drop off from the Prep gate from 9:20 am and collect at 12:00 pm on their allocated day.

Kindergarten and Junior School Orientation Day Wednesday 1 December All of our Kindergarten to Year 7 2022 students will have an Orientation Day on Wednesday, 1 December. This will commence with registration at 8:45 am in the marquee outside Esrom House on the Junior School Campus for

our 2022 Kindergarten students and any other new students. Kindergarten orientation concludes at 12:15 pm, whilst Junior School orientation will continue through until 3:15 pm. All classes will spend a large part of the day with their 2022 teachers.

The Junior School Presentation Day Assembly will be held on Friday, 3 December on the Chapel Lawn at 9:15 am. Students are to wear full summer uniform (including their hat). All Junior School students will return to class for the remainder of the day after the Presentation Day Assembly. Our Presentation Day Assembly will be filmed as parents and visitors are not allowed to attend due to COVID restrictions. Under updated Level 3 restrictions, fully vaccinated visitors (including parents and carers) are only allowed to attend if completing a specific role (such as presenting) and at the invitation of the school. continued page 4

NAPLAN Readiness Test From next year, the College will complete NAPLAN online.

Year 3 writing will still be pen and paper, but everything else will be online. During Week 9, we will be completing a test of the College’s IT infrastructure to support the testing program. Students who are currently in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will take part in the test. Whilst it might be a good practice for students completing NAPLAN in the future, this will simply be a test of the College’s infrastructure.

Public Speaking Program - BYO Board Game - Monday 6 December The final task for our Public Speaking Program for 2021 is our Board Games Afternoon. The Afternoon was a very successful addition to our program in 2020 and it’s back for another year.

Students develop so many skills through playing board games; brain development, concentration, language and teamwork skills, problem-solving, and sportspersonship are just a few.

On Monday, 6 November, we’ll be setting aside a session for students to play a range of board games with their peers. Students can simply bring along their favourite board game (age appropriate) and settle in for a session of fun, problem-solving, critical thinking and communication. So dust off the board games and get set to bring your favourite one in boys and girls!

Home Readers Whilst students haven’t been using home readers since returning to school, there still might be a few readers at home. Could I ask that all home readers are returned by Friday 3 December. Staff will undertake a complete audit of readers in preparation for 2022.

Last day of term and Student Reports All students (K to 8) on Campus West will finish the term at 3:15 pm on Tuesday, 7 December. Reports will be handed to students at the end of the school day by their class/core teacher.

Australasian Problem Solving Maths Olympiad Congratulations to all the students in Years 5 and 6 who participated in the Australasian Problem Solving Maths Olympiad this year.

The students worked diligently throughout Terms 2 and 3 each Wednesday morning before school to develop their Maths problemsolving skills and be part of a highly regarded external competition.

Congratulations to Charles Croaker and Matthew Slater (pictured), who were awarded a trophy for being the highest points scorers for Scots All Saints College in the competition.

It is hard to believe that we only have a few weeks left of the 2021 school year. Below is some information on some important events for the students between now and the end of term.

All of our students in Kindergarten to Year 7 2022 will have an Orientation Day on Wednesday 1 December. Our current Year 6 students will spend the day on the Senior School Campus while welcoming our 2022 Kindergarten students to the school. All other classes will spend a large part of the day with their 2022 teachers.

Our Presentation Day Assemblies will be filmed as parents and visitors are not allowed to attend due to Covid restrictions. All students need to be in full summer school uniform for these assemblies including their school hat.

The ‘Success’ unit considers ability strengths and character strengths. At its core is the concept that not everyone is good at everything; which is a message which often resonates with teachers and parents. The strengths are drawn from Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences, which is well-known within the world of education. The Multiple Intelligences Theory cites strength ranging from traditional or intellectual strengths (academic), but equally acknowledges areas like music; interpersonal relationships and kinaesthetic (or body movement), and each strength has character traits associated with them. The students completed a survey to help them identify where their strengths lie.

While it was a fun activity and not especially scientific, it was fascinating to see students collate their results and link their strengths with activities they enjoy and experience success. Equipping students with this knowledge can help build their confidence and motivate them to work towards their strengths both at school and in life.

Stage 4 The term is quickly picking up the pace for both students and teachers alike. Assessments are being handed in, and Stage 4 students are preparing for their end of course examinations, which will take place on Monday, 29 November and Tuesday, 30 November.

The timetable will be distributed shortly, letting students know the order of the examinations in Week 9. A good tip for preparing for the exams is: During Core Class sessions, the students have been given time and guidance on how to prepare for the upcoming exams. The information from those sessions can be found at the link below, which is on the school Canvas site (https:// studyskillshandbook.com.au/inside/index.php).

The activities and short clips are all very informative and good talking points.

This week the whole school watched and partook in a Remembrance Day service in class groups. A service was created and posted on Canvas by Mr Bennett and student leaders for the whole school to watch and then to have a minute’s silence. A big thank you to Mr Bennett and his team for their efforts in creating this opportunity for all the students and staff.

Exams and Assessments There is certainly a feeling of academic endeavour at the moment. Years 9 and 10 students are busily preparing for their exams over the next few weeks.

The Class of 2022 has started their HSC assessments, and many of the Class of 2021 have completed more than half of their HSC exams; some will even finish their HSC exams this week. Today at the Team Leader meeting, Isabella Taylor and Dylan Boniface, our academic prefects, spoke to Year 9 and 10 about exam preparation. They passed on many useful tips!

Year 9 All the very best to Year 9 for their exams starting next week.

Following the exams in Week 9 (week commencing 29 November), the students will participate in a week of STEM activities. All students will be assigned to a group and engage in a series of project-based learning activities. In a Stage Meeting recently, Ms Leaf introduced this initiative to the students with this recording https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=fH5iLx_jCUk. Project-Based Learning will become an essential part of our curriculum at the College in line with the NESA Curriculum Reform https://nswcurriculumreform.nesa.nsw.edu.au/ home/homePageContent/view due for implementation in 2024.

The STEM activities will run from Periods 1 -5 each day of Week 9, and then students will go to normal classes after lunch. On Monday and Tuesday, Year 9 will participate in a series of online tests using the NAPLAN platform. Next year, as a College, we will migrate to online testing for NAPLAN and NESA minimum standards tests. The College's expectation

these exams, and Year 9 will be the year group on Senior School Campus undertaking this testing. Please note that these are just practice tests, and the sole purpose is to test our school network infrastructure to ensure we are ready for these online exams next year.

Year 10 All My Own Work Prior to starting Year 11 studies, all students must complete a NESA program called All My Own Work https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/ nesa/11-12/hsc/hsc-all-my-own-work. They have already started doing this program and will continue working on this until the end of the term.

Stage 6 report Year 12 is well underway with the HSC and hopefully sees the light at the end of the tunnel. So great to see Year 12 back on campus, and from all accounts, students have been happy with the exams and their preparation.

Year 12 Val invitations were sent out last week via email, and many families have already sent through their RSVP. Every student can bring four guests, and the College is covering the costs of the student ticket.

All attendees will need to bring a mask on the night and proof of vaccination.

Friendly reminder that all students need to have permission to drive before they bring their cars to school. The form can be collected from our Team Leader's office, and the completed form must be submitted to Mr Weeding’s office.

Our new school leaders are settling into their new roles and will be actively supporting Orientation Week at the end of the term. They will also be assisting with STEM week, working with staff and Year 9 on their STEM projects.

Introducing our Academic Prefects

My name is Dylan Boniface, and I have been appointed Academic Prefect for the 2022 school year.

I am filled with glee for the opportunity to have a lasting

impression on the College and help improve all areas of academia throughout the student body.

When I am not on campus as a fulltime boarder, my home is in Sydney where I enjoy spending time with family, playing games, and going on walks with my two dogs. As a boarder, I have experienced the challenges of being away from home ever since I started at the College in Year 8. However, I have been able to gain an appreciation for life west of Sydney and create lasting friendships with the mates I board with.

For sport, I play tennis, however,

more recently I have been working on my Drama major work in preparation for the HSC. In addition, I am an avid participator in school musicals playing ‘Lumiere’ in our 2019 production of Beauty and the Beast and am excited to start work on our 2022 production. In terms of my portfolio, I always try to achieve my best academically and promote others to fulfil their potential.

My school subjects include Drama (Accelerated), Economics, Business Studies, Maths Advanced, English Advanced. in Sydney. I am studying Maths Extension, Advanced English, Physics, Chemistry and Music Extension as my current subjects for Year 12. I have been accelerating Music 2 since Year 10 and have just recently completed my HSC for this subject.

I hope to play a vital role in developing academic projects over the coming year that will continue in the future.

My name is Bella Taylor, and I have been appointed to the position of Academic Prefect. I moved to All Saints’ in 2015 and remained there until the two schools merged in 2019.

This was a huge change, but one that created so many opportunities.

Dylan and Bella's Year 9 and 10 exam tips Perspective on 9/10 exams and Multiple choice • The Year 9 and 10 exams are good practice for the exams you will get in Year 11 and 12, and studying for them will help you develop a way to study in future grades. In the long run, not putting in any effort into these exams won't directly affect your ATAR, but it will make the jump to the expectations of Year 11 and 12 a lot harder.

that is underestimated in difficulty by the whole state will help you boost your ATAR. • Multiple choice is a section where you can easily make up time by practising it, allowing you more time to achieve in extended response sections in future exams.

How to do Multiple Choice: • Read the question carefully as it is easy to make a silly mistake in this section.

• Read the answers, eliminating two answers that are most obviously wrong. continued page 8

• Deduce which answer is the MOST correct out of the two remaining answers • If you are stuck for more than 1-2 minutes, move on. It is not worth the time, and there are a lot more marks that you can gain in later questions, especially if there are extended or short responses, and as mentioned, multiple choice should be a section where you gain time.

• In saying that, in the 9/10 exams, do not rush as they are 100% multiple choices, and so your time should be spread evenly across the questions

• You can also test people in your grade, form groups of two or more and write five multiple choice questions each, pass them onto each other and discuss the answers. This will reinforce your knowledge and help test your other classmates.

• Finally, if you are stuck, do not be afraid to ask your teachers for help, whether in class or by email, they want to help you and it is what they are here for, and chances are other students are asking similar if not the same questions.

How to study for exams

Uniform Shop bookings

• One of the hardest challenges of studying is learning how to put away your phone and gain motivation. Ways to combat this: • Use Apps that motivate you to put your phone down, e.g. apps that grow a virtual tree and get bigger the longer you study.

If you have a Uniform Shop booking, to attend, you must be double vaccinated, sign in with our QR code and wear a mask. We ask that you go from the car park straight to the Uniform Shop and then back to your car again.

• Turn off your Snapchat notifications and go on do not disturb • Ask your parents to hide it for an hour.

• Reward yourself for every hour you don’t look at your phone e.g. one episode of Netflix for every hour of study.

• Revise your classwork, summarise or revise anything you are unsure of. In Year 11 and 12, summarising is a key study skill. Creating summary notes of your class work as you progress through the content is an easy way to engage with your work and create a cohesive place to revise at the end of the year.

• Ask your teachers for a syllabus if it applies to your subject, for example, sciences usually have a comprehensive syllabus they work off.

• The easiest and most effective way to study for exams is by doing practice exams, asking your teachers for any they have, or going on the internet and finding some there.

Mitsuki begins an exciting new journey Mitsuki Osaka, Year 11 Japanese student, has left Scots All Saints College to begin an exciting journey.

Mitsuki will initially travel to Sydney to bid farewell to her homestay family and her Guardian/agent. Then, from Sydney, she will fly home to Japan. She has not been home for almost two years, so this is very exciting for her to be with her family once again.

To add to the excitement, the entire family is planning on relocating to England early in 2022. Mitsuki will attend a foundation/Diploma course then proceed onto university to pursue a career in Hotel Management.

Mitsuki has been a delightful student, a positive addition to the school community, showing care, compassion to her fellow day & boarding school friends and bravery coming to a regional boarding school, leaving her home far behind her and embracing country living. While Mitsuki has been with us, she took up music, and Mrs Sargent assures me she sings beautifully.

Mitsuki also took twice-weekly horse riding lessons. She thoroughly enjoyed horse riding, especially purchasing all the correct clothing! She didn’t mind the dust or pests and learnt how to care for a horse, and her riding technique was very good.

The girls and Mrs Woodlock, Ives House, gave her a lovely farewell with laughter and tears, wishing her all the very best as she moves forward onto her new exciting path.

Mitsuki takes with her many pleasant memories, happy shared experiences, and strong friendships.

FAMOUS ARTIST BRETT WHITELY

An edition of “The Roar” in 2019 had an article on Brett Whitely the famous artist, who was a student of The Scots School for two periods in its early history.

Whiteley is topical again with the Bathurst Regional Gallery featuring an exhibition of his works during the coming Summer from 20 November 2021 until 6 February, 2022.

Brett Whiteley arrived at Scots at the beginning of 1948 as a nine-year old student in Year 4. In the course of the next few years, his talent for drawing emerged. An Old Boy who attended the school at the same time recalled in a phone call to Mr. Maher a few weeks ago that Whiteley was a compulsive drawer. His preferred medium was butchers paper. He exhibited his drawings on the walls of the old Science laboratory (now the Year 12 Common Room on Campus East).

Eventually Mr East, the Science teacher, became exasperated with them and had them removed.

On Sundays, Brett and fellow student Vernon Treweeke would paint scenes around the school. Treweeke would also have a career as an artist, gaining the reputation as the father of psychedelic art in Australia.

From the beginning of 1954, Brett Whiteley attended The Scots College, Bellevue Hill. His time there, however, was cut short after an incident where he shoplifted some art supplies. He spent the rest of 1954 and 1955 at Scots Bathurst, almost guaranteeing the employment of an art teacher, Ellen Waugh.

There are photos in the school collection of Brett Whiteley in the School’s cadet unit. Old Boys recall that he was the recipient of a prize for shooting, which in the 1950s was a school activity. He was also considered a valuable scrum half in Rugby.

The exhibition at the Bathurst Regional Gallery has been curated from the collection of the Art Gallery of NSW and the Brett Whiteley Studio in Sydney.

Joslyn and Lillian win Ives Award Each month the Ives House girls vote on who should be the recipient of the Ives Award.

The Ives Award, known in the boarding house as 'Living with values Ives House'.

College Covid-19 Safety Plan

This month the girls unanimously, amid great applause, decided that Joslyn Wong, International Prefect and Lilian Oke would win the award as they had shown all the qualities that fitted the values of the boarding house. Some of these values included kindness, compassion, tolerance, loyalty, courage and friendship to the school community, and they particularly set the example of these traits in the boarding house itself to everyone.

Mrs Woodlock said the evening went well, and when the applause settled down, each of the girls in the house expressed a kind thought about the award recipient. Some words used to describe Joslyn were – kind, polite, loyal and brave.

The girls have also formed a strong friendship, sharing experiences and life stories from two different perspectives – one a high-rise city girl and the other a rural farming girl.

Both girls have diverse interests and have enjoyed the interaction of sharing their experiences, which has enriched each of their own characters and views of the world at large. They have brought their shared experiences into the house and become a fixture and example to the other girls.
