A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks
A very different and difficult year, but we have prevailed! As the year draws to a close we, as a College Community, have much to be thankful for and to celebrate. Despite the many restrictions imposed upon us since February, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the College has been able to maintain our operations for all our students. Here at Scots All Saints we took a very determined approach to the many threats which beset us. We committed to working with NSW Health to make our environment and procedures as safe as possible to protect everyone’s health and maintain the delivery of all courses to all students. In this regard, I believe we have been very successful. Our community has been coronavirus-free to date and our services have been ongoing. It has been a mighty effort on behalf of all members of staff to achieve this outcome. I commend the work of our cleaning and grounds staff who virtually doubled their work-load to ensure extra cleaning in classrooms, grounds, school buses and boarding houses. To the Boarding house staff who literally opened a whole new centre and relocated students in 48 hours! The catering staff made many changes to routines and systems, the clerical and administration staff managed communications and additional support to everyone, the IT staff ensured rapid technology upgrades to ensure remote learning was successful, the clinic staff who monitored everyone’s health and liaised daily with NSW Health, and our tremendous teaching staff that collectively remained focused on your children, who were agile and flexible, adapting to the unexpected changes which were made throughout the year. This is Scots All Saints at its best! If you get the chance at one of the different speech day events, take time to let our fantastic team know your appreciation.

2020 Digital Music Showcase It is with great excitement we announce the Performing Arts Academy’s 2020 Digital Music Showcase. Over 200 musicians from the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools will entertain you across a range of ensembles and musical styles presenting a year’s worth of passion. Students and our amazing staff have shown resilience, grit and a dogged determination through a unique year to prepare for this Showcase and display to you the power of music! There are many highlights across this Showcase but one to draw your attention is the Year 2-4 Orchestra who recorded and performed ‘Count On Me’ by Bruno Mars. It was a logistical task to organise over 80 students to play in tune and time, let alone follow ever changing requirements. This promo features the introduction of their performance matched with footage from across the other ensembles. Due to the digital nature of the 2020 Music Showcase we have been able to be creative in our locations and filming techniques. The College media students led by Mr Thomas Druitt have captured some special angles and shots for you and the promo video below hints at some of these. I know you will enjoy being immersed in the ensemble, under a drum cymbal, flying high in a drone or watching the conductor from within the band! Congratulations to the many staff and our amazing students who have combined across 2020 to create an amazing showcase we will never forgot. Enjoy the show! Charlie's a top performer in Mathematics Competition Scots All Saints College Year 5 Middle School student, Charlie Croaker, was recognised as a top performer in regional NSW when he received the Year 5 District Award for Bathurst in the Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition. Term 4 has been rewarding for Charlie as he has received a number of great results in Mathematics. In addition to the District Award, he received a Distinction in the ICAS NSW Mathematics Competition and second place at Scots All Saints College in the Stage 3 section of the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematic Olympiad. Head of All Saints Campus/ Director of Middle School, Mr Chris Jackman said: “Charlie’s results in these external competitions are a fitting reflection of his achievements and ability in Mathematics. We strive for academic excellence in all subjects at Scots All Saints College and have a number of programs in place that support the students in achieving to their potential.”

Stage 2 Camp Despite the heat, Stage 2 had an awesome time on camp last week. Upon arrival at Taronga Zoo, students went on the safari truck ride and were able to get up close and personal with a range of safari animals including giraffes, elephants, blackbuck, eland and zebra. Following the truck ride there were many other exciting animals to visit including the ever-popular meerkats, African wild dogs, tahki, Sumatran tiger, hippos, rhinos and Mr Roohan’s favourite; the bongo! student enjoyed arriving at base camp after a hot day and had a huge BBQ dinner before heading out on a night tour. The students loved their tents with views over the billabong and despite the roaring lions and possums most of us got a little bit of sleep. Burrendong Sport and Rec was a hit as students experienced three activities including archery, raft building and the giant slip and slide. Students were given limited materials to build a raft before testing them in the pool. Most rafts were reasonably successful and stayed afloat whilst the slip and slide was a real treat too. The staff would like to commend all the students on the way they immersed themselves in the camp’s experiences and for the way they represented themselves and their school. Orientation Day Despite the wet weather, we welcomed 32 new Kindergarten students to our Orientation Day on Monday, along with a variety of students in other classes. All students enjoyed being ‘bumped up’ for the day and enjoyed a taste of learning for 2021. For more photos see page 10.
Home Readers Could I ask that all home readers are returned by Monday 30 November. Staff will undertake a complete audit of readers in preparation for 2021. BYO Board Game - Public Speaking Program - Friday 27 November The final task for our Public Speaking Program for 2020 is our Board Games Afternoon. There are so many skills that students develop through playing board games; brain development, concentration, language and teamwork skills, problem solving and sportspersonship being just a few. Tomorrow, Friday 27 November, we’ll be setting aside a session for students to play a range of board games with their peers. Students can simply bring along their favourite board game (age appropriate) and settle in for a session of fun, problem solving, critical thinking and communication.

Pre-Kindergarten Assemblies Graduation Assemblies have been arranged for each of our Pre-Kindergarten groups. Each PreKindergarten child will be presented with a graduation certificate to celebrate their work and effort throughout the year. Graduation certificates will be presented to Pre-Kindergarten students on the following dates: Friday 27 November - Ives House Lawn (outside) 9:00 am, Scots Campus Wednesday 2 December - Kemmis Building - 9:00 am Pre-K 3 day Thursday 3 December - Kemmis Building - 9:00 am Pre-K 2 and 4/5day All families are welcome to bring 2 people per student to their graduation assembly. PreKindergarten Assemblies will be brief and due to COVID precautions will not feature any singing or concert items. I look forward to celebrating your child’s learning and achievements on these dates. Lithgow Campus End of Year Assembly On Wednesday 2 December we would like to celebrate the achievements of our Lithgow students throughout the 2020 calendar year and also mark the end of an era at the Lithgow Campus with a special assembly. The special assembly for the Lithgow Campus will commence at 11:30 am outside the classrooms. It will feature end of year awards to acknowledge our students, several items from the students, a reflection on the history of the Lithgow Campus, prayer and a P and F lunch for the students. I look forward to marking the occasion and celebrating with our Lithgow students and families. Year 4 Graduation and Fun Day - Thursday 3 December Unfortunately, the Year 4 Graduation Dinner will not go ahead this year. Whilst we won’t be able to mark the occasion with a dinner, our Year 4 students will still celebrate this milestone in the Junior School with a BBQ lunch and fun day. Next Thursday 3 November all Year 4 students can wear casual clothes and should bring their swimmers and a towel as we celebrate with a pool party, disco and BBQ lunch. graduation certificate to mark the occasion. Junior School Speech Day - Friday 4 December The Junior School will have their Speech Day on Friday 4 December on the Chapel Lawn at 9:15 am. Students are to wear full summer uniform (including their formal hat). Students can invite two adults to attend and we will have procedures in place to ensure we are abiding by current COVID-19 restrictions. All Junior School students will return to class for the remainder of the day after the Speech Day assembly. In the case of inclement weather, we will take the students inside to present the awards and parents will not be able to attend due to social distancing restrictions. As our Speech Day assembly is on a Friday, students can change into their sport uniform after the assembly in preparation for Active Afternoons. Junior School Excursions On Tuesday, 1 December, Kindergarten and Year 1 will head off to Heritage Park. Students will listen to a story about some of the leading sheep and cattle breeds found in NSW in the famous Bathurst Sheep and Cattle Drome. They will watch the animals as they parade and move to their place on the stage. There might even be an opportunity to milk a cow, feed some animals, and learn more about life on a farm in the country. A tractor ride will also be included. On Thursday 3 December, Year 2 teachers and students will visit the Bathurst Railway Museum and The Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum to consolidate learning from History and Science units this semester. This excursion will also feature a picnic in a local park. All excursion venues have COVID Safety Plans. Kindergarten and Year 1 students should wear their sport uniform on their excursion whilst Year 2 should wear their normal full summer uniform. Last day of term and Student Reports All students (K to 8) on the All Saints Campus will finish the term at 3:15 pm on Tuesday 8th December. Reports will be handed to students at the end of the school day by their class/core teacher. I wish you all the best for a safe holiday Christmas break.

Pre-Kindergarten News Pre-Kindergarten 2 Day have explored some simple addition during Maths this week. In Library, the Christmas activities and books have begun! We read ‘The Naughtiest Reindeer at the Zoo’ by Nicki Greenberg and played ‘Pin the Nose on Rudolph’ with the fabulous Mrs Wells.
Pre-Kindergarten 3 Day enjoyed a beautiful Buddy Session last Friday on the Chapel lawn. What an amazing setting for our gross motor activities with our wonderful Year 6 students, who have been such great role models and friends to our Pre-K children. There was so much excitement walking to Music on Monday and seeing the crane in action to build our new STEM Innovation Centre.

Senior School All examinations are now completed for the year and staff are finalising marking and returning results to students. Overall we have been very pleased with how the students have approached their examinations and the results that are appearing in mark books. As always we would like to encourage students with the reminder that an examination is just one ‘snapshot’ of their achievement and performance against the Course Outcomes, at a particular point in time. Assessment results are never an assessment of the worth of a person. As educators we look for and celebrate growth in knowledge, understanding and effort. From that perspective I believe we have much to celebrate this year. Our senior students have exhibited resilience and determination throughout 2020 and we are proud of their efforts. Reports will be emailed to parents after December 9. End of Year Celebrations As I write we are busy finalising the preparation for the Year 12 Graduation Assembly and Dinner. We look forward to welcoming Year 12 and their (2) family members to the campus on Friday morning to celebrate their achievements and the conclusion of their formal education. We have moved this event outdoors which will allow all Senior School staff and students to attend. Students in Years 9-11 must wear their formal summer uniform on Friday. Hats are mandatory as we will be seated outside. If students have a practical PE/PASS later in the day, they may bring their sports uniform and change for the lesson.

Visiting Speakers Important messages are sometimes heard more clearly by students when delivered by someone other than teachers and parents. This week Year 9 and Year 11 have had the opportunity to hear presentations on topics relevant to their age groups. Our local Police Liaison Officer spent time with Year 9 this week discussing the personal and legal challenges that occur when young people use their phones and social media inappropriately. This is an important message that is repeated to all our students on a regular basis at school. I would like to encourage parents to have a conversation with their child about the message that was delivered. N2C – No Second Chance made a presentation to Year 11 on the dangers of mixing alcohol and driving. This presentation was a combination of personal story of tragedy and inspiration. At the centre of the message presented was the reality that good choices can mean that opportunities exist for young people to go on and pursue their dreams. Uniform Matters All Senior School students will be required to wear the SASC uniform from January 2021. Some students are continuing to wear items not permitted, including extra jewellery, hoodies, nonschool branded items and winter jackets. There is also a noticeable lack of hats, which are a mandatory item in the Summer terms (Term 1 and 4). I would again ask parents to assist us in maintaining the standards of our College by ensuring your child has the correct uniform and is wearing the correct uniform.

Artworks selected for prestigious ARTEXPRESS Exhibition Year 12 Visual Arts student, Stella Gavey has had her HSC Textile and Fibre Body of Work, “Tree Change” and “Tree Huggers” selected to feature in the 2021 ARTEXPRESS Exhibition. ARTEXPRESS is an annual series of exhibitions of exemplary artworks created by NSW Visual Arts students for the Higher School Certificate. 8616 students submitted Bodies of Work for the 2020 Visual Arts HSC Examination and 575 were nominated for ARTEXPRESS. Three students from Scots All Saints College, Bathurst were nominated for consideration for the 2021 ARTEXPRESS exhibition. Congratulations to Genevieve King (Collection of Works), Portia Killiby (Textile and Fibre) and Stella Gavey (Textiles and Fibre). Stella’s Textile and Fibre Body of Work, “Tree Change” & “Tree Huggers” has been selected for inclusion in the 2021 ARTEXPRESS exhibition at The Armory, Sydney Olympic Park in 2021. Stella Gavey’s Body of Work illustrated the tree change taken by her family. Aspects of the built and natural world symbolise the cathartic personal change induced by her new environment. The tactile nature of fabric and embroidery partnered with bright colours represents the joy and comfort found by immersing ourselves in the natural world. The exhibition comprises of artworks produced by Higher School Certificate students from
Government and Non-Government schools, metropolitan and regional centres. Education officers and art gallery curators, in association with the ARTEXPRESS Officer, select the artworks to be included in the exhibitions. A range of expressive forms described in the Visual Arts syllabus are represented in the exhibitions.
Gastroenteritis in the Bathurst Region It has been brought to our attention that there have been a large number of Gastroenteritis cases in the Bathurst region. Whilst the number of cases at Scots All Saints College is comparatively low we encourage everyone to exercise caution. Please help care for others by staying home if unwell and remaining at home for at least 48 hours after the last symptoms of vomiting or diarrhoea as even though you may be feeling better you are still infectious until this time has passed. To prevent the spread of gastroenteritis we recommend increased vigilance with hand hygiene (hand sanitiser and washing with soap and water then drying with a single use towel). Surface sprays

and disinfectants (those that kill viruses and not just bacteria) may also be of benefit because the virus can live on surfaces for a number of days and if the surface isn’t effectively cleaned the virus will transmit to the next person who touches that surface. Please don’t allow anyone with or recovering from vomiting or diarrhoea to prepare food as they are likely to spread the virus to others via the food or utensils. Washing towels, sheets and tea towels with detergent and in hot water (60 degrees Celsius or above) has also been shown to be effective in preventing gastroenteritis. Year 6 Outdoor Recreational Camp - Lake Macquarie Trembling at the top of a 12 metre high abseiling tower ready to jump down the rock wall. I can hear my friends chanting “You can do it, jump”! My feet crash clumsily onto the timber platform. There’s no turning back now! Waking up at 5:30am on a chilly Monday morning was all worth it once we said goodbye to our parents and loaded onto the College’s brand new coach excitedly for our adventure to beautiful Lake Macquarie. We stopped at Glenbrook approximately three hours into our trip for morning tea and a stretch at the park. Then we got back on the bus and two hours later we were at the refurbished Crusader Camp, welcomed by our energetic camp leaders. My eyes focus intensely on the tiny red circle as I release the bow string. We had to play a game where we hit each individual colour on the target wheel to make a cake. Archery was the first activity that our group did, it was really fun and there was plenty of cheering and laughter. In the evening after showers, we got to set up our tents that we would have been sleeping in if the past weather had not been so bad. We cooked our own stir fry for dinner in a Trangia, and then we went to the bonfire area and spent some time reflecting on the day while eating frozen yogurt for dessert. Afterwards we got split into our cabin groups and went to bed in the A frame cabins for six people. We excitedly woke up for our water activities day. The first group activity was canoeing. “Splash!”, our canoes were pushed into the water and we were lucky enough to paddle around to Jetty Bay. We hopped off and walked around the jetty and gazed into the clear, calm water. After our delicious lunch, it was time for rafting. We huddled into our groups while working out the best strategy to spend our money at the equipment auction. Frantically we scrambled to an area, as we only had ten minutes to build our rafts before we had to go test them in the water. We were assigned a captain and catamaran for the next hour. We set sail over the beautiful lake and brushed our hands through the refreshing water. We then took turns to steer the sailing boat while the camp leaders threw tennis balls as a cannon game and made waves around us on the jet boat. Sadly our day was done, so we headed to the showers, then after dinner we had a Scottish games night. First we played a sword and the stone game then it was throwing shoes at a water bottle, and finally we had to knock plastic plates off other people’s hands, then off to bed . With tired eyes and heavy hearts we arose knowing it was the last day, but we had one more activity to do, catapulting. We split into teams of four to build our catapults. “Three, two, one… fire!”. We watched in amazement as our tennis balls flew away into the distance as our team members sprinted to see who got the farthest. Sadly, we had to leave after lunch. Just one more meeting to say goodbye and thank our camp leaders for an awesome few days. We crammed our luggage into the bottom of the coach and hopped on for the five-hour bus ride home, chatting, singing and laughing into Bathurst. Camp was one of the best things that has happened for Year 6. We were extremely lucky to be able to go on this camp and we thank all the camp staff and teachers who made this possible. COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe Dear Parents and Carers, We’ve almost reached the end of the year and I would like to thank everyone for your vigilance and commitment to keeping Scots All Saints College COVID Free in 2020. We faced a mammoth task and a series of inconveniences but as is characteristic of Scots All Saints families, we worked together, did what we had to and have almost made it to the finish line without any cases of COVID 19. We look very much forward to the various Graduation and end of year functions. Whilst we want everyone to relax and enjoy these events, we are required to advise you of some of the details of our COVID Safety Plan for the day. If you could bear with us one last time for 2020 and follow the guidelines below we would appreciate it. Students will be briefed on what is required from them by teaching staff and Year Coordinators. COVID Safe Points for Parents: • Please don’t attend any assemblies or end of year functions if you are unwell with COVID symptoms unless you have been tested since the onset of symptoms and have returned a negative result. Similarly, please keep any students away if they are unwell. • The assemblies will occur outside (weather permitting) but will be moved inside in the event of inclement weather. Unfortunately, if the assemblies need to be moved inside we will not be able to accommodate parents or carers. • You may stand in front of your seat and take a photo of your child receiving their award. Apart from this, photographs and particularly group photographs are not permitted this year. • Only two people, e.g. parents or carers, may attend per family. Chairs will be set out in groups of two and where parents and carers share the same household they need to sit together. There will be some extra chairs available for those families where the two people attending do not live in the same household. Please only sit next to a person with whom you live. • Please arrive, sign in using the QR Codes that will be available, use hand sanitiser and take your seats straight away. At the end of the assembly please make your way to your vehicle and leave without stopping to catch up with other families. • As you will be seated outside please remember hats and water bottles if you would like to bring them along. • Boarding Parents will be permitted to briefly enter the boarding houses to help their children take their belongings to the car. However, we ask that you sign in using the QR Code when doing so. • The Valedictory dinners COVID Plan is being managed by the venue with our approval. Please follow the instructions of the staff at the Goldfields. • NSW Health has advised us that we are required to remind you that before or after events should be limited to household members where possible or to a group of no more than 10 participants, and must comply with restrictions on gatherings under the Public Health Order.
