The end of the 2021 school year is just over three weeks away. Despite the many restrictions imposed upon the school communities we continue to work through the maze to keep most end-of-year activities happening.

In brief, this is what is happening: 1. The HSC began this week after a delayed start. It finishes on 3 December 2021. ATAR’s for university courses will be received on 20 January 2022. The HSC results are released on 24 January 2022. Our students have been outstanding this week in applying themselves to the HSC challenge. Great stuff!

2. Remembrance Day Services occurred across both campuses today, 11 November 2021. Our thanks to Rev. Bennett for the detail he put into his presentations. It was very special.

3. End-of-year assessments and end-of-year reports will take place for most students P-10 over the two week period beginning 22 November 2021.

4. Year 12 Valedictory Dinner is to be held at Goldfields on Thursday, 2 December 2021. This will be a great celebration for all students, staff and parents following a very long year of study due to the COVID19 restrictions.

5. Orientation Days can now go ahead. Parents have been notified of all of these: Preparatory School Wednesday, 24 November 2021

Because of these COVID-19 restrictions, each of the final assemblies and award presentations will be filmed and available on the College website.

The final presentation assemblies will be held as follows: The final day of Term 4 for all students is Tuesday, 7 December 2021.

Psalm 139: God stands outside of time My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

We return to our theme this term, King David’s Psalm 139.

If you have just started reading the Roar devotions, we have been working through one of King David's (1000BC) famous Psalms. In this Psalm, David reflects upon how well God knows us. He has created us, sustains us, and is ever-present within our lives. David is at first hostile to this knowledge. Prideful, he prefers darkness and despair to engaging with God. However, the more he ponders, the more he realises the goodness of God. In today’s verses, David shares with the reader just how familiar God is with each one of us. Indeed, he is more familiar with us than we are with ourselves. David writes: All the days ordained for me were written in your book, before one of them came to be.

When biblical verses like this are read out, the question that surfaces for us is: "Do I have freedom and choice, or am I just living a pre-programmed life?” As I pointed out two weeks ago, the Psalm says humankind reflects the ‘image of God’ and therefore we are given his creativity, free will and choice.

God knows us so well and knows how we shall respond in any given situation because he exists outside of time. Those of you who are familiar with his name – “I am who I am” (Yahweh), will know that the past is the present for God, the present is the present for God, and the future is the present for God. David, and I, find this knowledge enormously comforting. No matter how far I might fall, God is there, calling me to repent and to return to an intimate relationship with him. I can choose my own path in life or follow God's path. He gives us responsibility for our own choices and decisions but delights us when we seek to follow Him. God never gives up on us, and we shouldn’t give up on ourselves either. Amen.

UAC - Important Dates Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) This week sees the first round of university offers to those students who applied under SRS. Remember that only one unconditional offer will be made on 12 November, but students may receive multiple conditional offers via email on the same day.

Educational Access Scheme (EAS) A quick reminder that EAS applications, including all documents, must be submitted by 17 December 2021 to be considered in the first ATAR offer round on 26 January 2022.

Now we’re back at school, we’re able to take a few happy snaps of our Winter sports teams. We’re asking our Junior and Middle School students to bring their Winter sports playing uniforms (Netball, Rugby, Soccer) on their allocated day. Photos for teams in our Senior School as well as our Hockey teams were taken before the lockdown.

Last week we had a moment. It was special, albeit brief. But for a few fleeting hours, we could do something we hadn’t done in months – play sport.

Here’s a fancy schedule I made all by myself in Excel:

Sadly, this moment didn’t last long as Mother Nature decided to be a pain in the posterior and dampen any plans we had of Active Afternoons and Saturday sport.

Unfortunately, this week paints a similar portrait (using watercolours, of course). In fact, our primary school basketball players had their games cancelled yesterday due to a leaky roof at the Bathurst Basketball Stadium. If you don’t laugh, you cry, right?

Let’s rewind to last week when we were lucky enough to get our basketball teams on the court in the local Bathurst competition. We had a number of players making their basketball debuts, which were brilliant to see. We picked up some great results to start off the season – super duper impressive considering we still haven’t had a single practice session. An extra special fist bump goes to Miller Rivett, Fergus Campbell, Will Helms and Mekhi Willot-Bird, who secured a handy win playing with just four players for the entire game. Unreal banana peel!

Cross your fingers and toes that the weather fines up soon.

I’m starting to rust!

Lily’s leaving for Europe After captaining her NSW state team to victory in the U15s national titles here in Bathurst earlier this year, Lily Kable has been selected in the U16s Australian team to tour Europe in June next year. What a lucky duck!

Actually, there’s no luck involved – just talent and hard work. Congratulations Lily on such an awesome achievement! I’d encourage everyone to get in contact with Lily with any duty-free shopping requests. I’d like one of those big Toblerones, please.

Vale: Mrs Kay Martin This week, there was some sad news with the passing of a former Scots identity, Mrs Kay Martin.

Kay’s connection with Scots began as a parent of four boys in the late 1970s. She was soon a leading figure in the Parents and Friends Association, where her enthusiasm and energy contributed to raising funds for a number of projects, including the Hunter Sports Centre.

In 1990 she was appointed to the Council of the Scots School, where she served until 1997. A few years ago, Kay and her husband John returned to Scots frequently when granddaughter Emma was a student.

Kay and John Martin at a dinner held in 2006 to mark the 60th anniversary of The Scots School.

Kay received an Order of Australia Medal to recognise her work in the community, including for Scots and for a long association with the National Party.

Rainforest study for Year 5 This term in Geography, Year 5 has been learning about rainforests around the world. In this unit, we learn about why rainforests are so important to humanity and the threats they face. The students were asked to design a t-shirt that demonstrates their knowledge of issues affecting rainforests globally and ways we can protect and conserve them for our future.

We were really impressed with their dedication to this task, which allowed them to apply their learning in geography and the skills they are developing in art in a creative way.

Amazing holiday farm experience for Joslyn During the last term break, I was invited to spend the holidays with Lilian Oke’s family.

So I took this opportunity and enjoyed many new experiences. It is very uncommon to have a farm in Hong Kong and very rare that people keep livestock.

Therefore, it was interesting to see shearing in real life, and I even had a go at it!

It was very hard to control the electric shearing clipper because the vibration was much stronger than I expected.

Luckily, the shearer helped me hold the sheep and guided me where to shear and not cut my finger off!

Another unforgettable experience was definitely motorbike riding and gun shooting.

They are both new experiences for me because I have never held a real gun before, not to mention shooting one. My family doesn’t have a motorbike either, so I was thrilled to ride one and not fall off!

Lilian’s mum’s friend was very generous and lent us his guns and motorbikes. Although everyone warned me about the shotgun recoil, I felt like someone had punched my shoulder so hard that I backed off a few steps when I shot the gun. But overall, it was a fun experience. Everyone shot a few targets, and I also got to drive a four-wheeler and ride a motorbike.

This was an amazing experience and one that I will never forget, and feel blessed by the warmth and generosity of the Oke family.

THE SECOND HEADMASTER EDWIN BEAN, 1878-1888

Edwin Bean commenced his duties as the second Headmaster of All Saints’ at the beginning of 1878. He was in his twenty-seventh year and recently married.

Before his appointment, he had been a senior classical master at Sydney Grammar School and belonged to a school of masters who introduced into Australia the elements of the public school spirit in England.

When Bean was appointed as headmaster, he received no fixed salary. The opening term in 1878 commenced with either 15 or 17 boys, and Bean spent his holidays travelling around those districts which he thought the school should serve and explained to possible parents what a public school education meant and why they should give their boys the benefit of one. He also received local support from kindred denominations, the Head of the Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Archibald Geikie, was a champion of All Saints’ College, having his own five sons educated there.

What was of primary importance to Bean was the formation of a first-class staff as well as buildings to house the growing number of students as by the end of the first year there were sixty-one boys enrolled. He was responsible for the inauguration of the school magazine The Bathurstian which first appeared in 1878, the formation of the school Cadet Corps, the school badge and the school motto “Deo auctere, Vim promovemus insitam” translated as “God being our leader, we develop the inborn spirit”.

By 1885, All Saints’ became recognised as one of the great public schools of the state. The headmaster was a diligent worker and good organiser whose habit was to grapple with any task immediately, whatever the odds against him, and was always ready to learn. He inaugurated an annual sports day, camps and walking tours to places of interest and, in 1882, the school library, the carpentry class and the dancing class. In addition, he instituted a debating class, Christmas theatricals and the annual camp. With these valuable contributions to school life, he was greatly helped by his wife, Mrs Bean, who organised sing- songs and every Sunday night used to have the boarders in her drawing-room reading to them and playing their songs and hymns.

time, his father's death occurred, calling for his return to England for a short period of time. Upon his return, a preparatory school was formed for junior boys to ensure a flow of well-grounded juniors into the big school.

After 11 years, Bean had built up one of the most prosperous secondary schools in the state; a success educationally and financially. But in achieving this result, his health paid a toll, and the overstrain and overwork compelled him, under medical advice, to resign his headmastership at the end of 1888.

Mr Bean endowed the Bean Prize at All Saints to be presented to the boy, who by his efficiency at work, games, and influence on the school's life is deemed by the headmaster most worthy to receive it. One of the School houses was called Bean House after Bean himself, and the Old Bathurstians’ Museum has one room named the Bean Room, which houses Bean memorabilia of the Headmaster and his notable Old Boy, his son Charles Edwin Woodrow Bean, Australian War Correspondent and Historian. There is also a memorial wall at the front of the school in C.E.W. Bean’s honour.
