A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

This edition of The Roar is dedicated to our Year 12 students who will begin the Higher School Certificate examinations on Tuesday, 9 November.

These examinations would, under normal circumstances be finished, but due to Covid-19 causing so many disruptions to schools, the unpredictability of infection rates and the time lag of vaccinations to ‘kick-in’ the start date was pushed back. We are fortunate to even be doing the HSC. The class of 2021, more than others, has weathered the Covid-19 storm over their two years of HSC preparation, both as Year 11 in 2020 and Year 12 in 2021. While the disruption to class in 2020 was minor, 2021 has been of far greater impact due to enforced lockdowns at such a crucial time – throughout Term 3.

However, with the multiple adjustments and dedication of our Year 12 teachers, all course work and assessment tasks have been completed ensuring that no student will be disadvantaged.

As I write, Year 12 teachers are still delivering HSC revision seminars on-site.

with their continued attendance on Zoom and involvement with the seminars. All this extra hard work will make a big difference to their results.

To all parents and carers we acknowledge your support, understanding and care of your children through these years of challenge made so much more so because of the many restrictions we have endured.

Next week, “fortress Scots All Saints” will welcome all Year 12 back to start the HSC. Many precautionary procedures have been put in place, and these have been communicated to Year 12 individually.

Behind the scenes, Mr Weeding and his team have multiple ‘back-up’ plans in-line with HSC guidelines should any issues occur.

On behalf of the College Community, Rev. Bennett has prepared a list of prayers and messages from students, staff and parents. We hope all Year 12 finds them encouraging and you realise just how much we care for you.

Dear Friends, Most of you are aware that our Year 12 students start their HSC exams next week. Within the context of a normal school year, these exams traditionally have been a rite of passage as students complete 13 years of schooling. For the 2021 cohort, it’s been a very challenging final two years, with much uncertainty around COVID-19 health restrictions and the cancellation of many of the enjoyable face-to-face aspects of school life.

Therefore, Mr and Mrs Weeks asked me to put together a Prayer Letter that reflects the collective voice of our community and God’s blessing that we all want to be poured out upon our school leavers. So I have incorporated the prayers and general well-wishes from various emails sent to me by staff and students from Preschool to Senior School. I invite you to pray the following words with me as Year 12 begins their final exams.

Gracious and loving Heavenly Father, we thank you for our Year 12 students. We, as Parents, Staff and fellow students, thank you for the opportunity that we have had to invest into their hearts, minds and imaginations throughout their time at school. We now offer these prayers up to you and ask that you bless these students as they journey through these final few weeks of school and exams.

Prayer: Thank you for treasured memories We thank you for their time at Pre-school; for the stories and lessons that we have shared and that they have learnt; and for the early friendships that they formed. And as Jacinta Rivett (Prep School teacher and Year 12 parent) writes, we pray that Year 12 will “take each moment and truly experience it; experiences allow for growth and wisdom.” Lord God, help these students to truly treasure past memories as they create new ones in the future.

Prayer: Thank you for emotional connection Heavenly Father, we thank you for the many Junior School staff who have worked with Year 12 during their formative years both here at Scots All Saints, as well as other schools. For them, as well as many parents and students, there is a rich emotional attachment. As Lynette Inglis (Junior School staff member) shares: “I had the absolute pleasure of teaching many of these outstanding students in Kindergarten, then again in Year 3 and Year 4. They hold a very special place in my heart... I remember them all in Kindergarten as if it was yesterday. I actually get a little emotional thinking of them all.”

Father, may our Year 12s feel loved and supported during this time, and may they know the love and care that many in our school community feel for them as their time at Scots All Saints comes to an end. As Anthony Roohan (Head of Junior School) writes, “Year 12, the students and staff of our Junior School wish you all the best as you undertake your HSC.” And Chris Jackman (Head of Middle School and a Year 12 parent) echoes these remarks: “All the best to our Year 12 students for their upcoming exams. Your preparation and hard work will put you in good stead. Enjoy the final days of your schooling at Scots All Saints, you deserve it.”

Prayer: Thank you for their leadership Lord God, generations of students shall follow in the footsteps of Year 12. We ask that the leadership, wisdom, dedication to study, and resilience that Year 12 has demonstrated, particularly over the last couple of years, will influence the lives of younger year groups; that they, too, may be inspired and aspire to greater things, irrespective of the challenges that life throws at them. Angus Parsons (Year 11 Chapel Prefect) wrote on behalf of the Prefects and students of his year group: “We pray for the Year 12s about to enter the HSC. We pray that they will stay focused and motivated leading into the HSC and that they will finish off strong.” continued page 3

Lord, we echo Angus’s prayer, especially with the distractions that can arise with the lifting of COVID restrictions. Please protect our students and our school, and enable Year 12 to focus on what’s before them.

Prayer: For our boarders Lord, we particularly thank you for our Year 12 boarders.

We want to acknowledge that many of them live a long way from home, and some have family living overseas, who they have not seen for more than a year. We thank you for the way the Year 12s have served the boarding community and for the friendships they have nurtured. As Lynne Woodlock (Boarding Director and teacher) writes: We thank you and ask that you “bless the friendships that have developed with staff and students.” We pray that they may continue to find the time and energy “to keep in contact and support each other after they’ve left school and to treasure the memories made while at SASC.” Lord hear our prayer!

Prayer - From our parents Lord God we give you thanks for the beautiful men and women our children have become. As they prepare to go out into the world might they come to see the wisdom of your teaching and know the surety of your love and support as Denise Weeks, Leader of our parent prayer group writes: “Throughout our years of prayer meetings, parents have faithfully prayed for all College students and their families.

Throughout the past year a special focus of prayer and concern has been for Year 12, 2021 who have encountered additional challenges. Know that we will continue to pray for all of you to have clarity of thought, determination to succeed and peace in your hearts. Might God continue to bless you now and always.”

Prayer - From the staff Lord we thank you for the opportunity to work with such wonderful young people. It is a privilege and a joy to see growth and development before our very eyes. Might the work we have done together bring them wonderful insights into who they are and opportunities to see how far they can go. As Mr Weeks, Head of College writes: “We are all on the journey of life. The end of school is a significant

destination. You have now arrived at this point. So look ahead, there are many roads before you, which one do I take? Know this, God has a plan for each one of us. Seek and you will find.”

Might you truly know God’s leading in the days ahead.

Prayer: For the future Finally, Father, our attention turns to their future. The last two years and the many COVID restrictions have brought so much uncertainty and brought terrible hardship to some families. Please help us to thrive in our relationships and in the care we show one another, even as we face an uncertain future. As Peter O’Neill (Head of Science) writes: “An old saying but a good one… and quite appropriate: ‘Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional.’ Lord, provide for Year 12, and us all, the strength of character to face life’s challenges and to rise above them. As Bronwyn Jackson (Head of Art) prays, “Praise God for his hindsight and wisdom.

With the lessons of 2020 and 2021, I pray that you [our Year 12s] will not forget these. That you will remember the little lessons, as they may become the bigger ones and that today’s big lessons will become your ‘normal’, for a better future for you and the generations in your wake.”

Lord God, as we conclude this prayer letter, we want to acknowledge that there will be some Year 12s who are apprehensive about their futures. Tracey Leaf (Head of Teaching and Learning) prays: “Lord, the present and the future can both seem at times to be scary and difficult to navigate, especially if our plans don’t go quite the way we expect. Thankfully, Lord, you have a personalised plan for each one of us!… Year 12, may God keep you safe and draw you close to Himself as you walk into the next chapter of your lives!”

And finally, Father, we conclude this extended prayer with Andrew Weeding’s (Head of Senior School) blessing: “I pray that in your exams you are able to flourish and express yourselves in a way that represents all the hard work and effort you have put in.”

Lord, we thank you that you always hear our prayers.

Return to School It was great to welcome all of our students back to school last week. Whilst there were a few nerves following such an extended break from the familiar school setting, students enjoyed the opportunity to re-connect with their friends and teachers. The students are doing a great job following our COVID19 guidelines, including: • Playing and eating in stages on the playground.

• Sanitising hands before entering their classroom and on departure.

I should also remind everyone that should students have any symptoms, they should stay at home. Our main priority is keeping our community safe.

Therefore, they should not attend school until they receive a negative COVID-19 test result and their symptoms have subsided.

Stage 1 students have been learning about materials used in building structures during their STEM lessons. This involved looking at some of the world’s largest skyscrapers through the VR googles and building replicas of some of these towers including the Burj Khalifa in Dubai!

Thank you to our parents of younger children who have waited at the front of Esrom House each afternoon as they pick up their children. We ask that parents who collect their child from this area continue to social distance, QR code in and collect their child as quickly as possible.

The Uniform Shop is currently taking online orders only. A Collection point is operating after 3:30 pm for parent pick up.

Wellbeing Activities return to school All of our classes took part in a range of wellbeing activities when they returned to school. Each day, our Junior School classes engaged in an activity that aimed to promote emotional wellbeing, resilience and recovery. Activities included a ‘We can Paper Chain,’ character strengths, images of hope and a gratitude postcard where students thanked those who helped them during remote learning. Revised Home Reading Badge system Given many students have had up to eight weeks of learning from home, we thought it was fair to revise our Home Reading Badge System for this year. As a result, students who have completed reading on 90 occasions will be eligible for a reading badge instead of the normal 120. It’s been wonderful to see many happy faces around the Junior School proudly displaying their badge!

Semester 2 Reports The educational response to Covid-19 during Semester 2 has seen our students engage in both school-based and home-based learning. This learning has been supported by the hard work and commitment of both teachers and parents/carers. The opportunity to provide a formal report this semester is important, however, adjustments have been made to the report because of the changes to learning during Terms 3 and 4. It will focus on the outcomes taught and assessed. The purpose of this report is to help parents and carers understand how their child is going at this time and what can be done to support future learning. All education authorities recognise the need for flexibility in usual reporting practices at this time, so we look forward to providing you with a formal report that will only use the A-E or equivalent grading for those learning areas where valid assessment judgements can be made.

Skipping Ropes During our recent ‘Working from Home’, Year 1 and 2 students were able to take home skipping ropes. Could you please check if you still have a College skipping rope at your house and please return to the Junior School office as soon as possible.

Middle School The students have settled in very well to the routines of face-to-face schooling this last fortnight after a long period of remote online learning. With only five weeks of the term to go, it is important that they make the most of their learning experiences. I look forward to having a smooth run to the end of term and, hopefully, we will not get too interrupted with any COVID lockdowns.

We are being very diligent at school with COVID Safety and Hygiene protocols, and the students are adhering to the guidelines. If your child has any flu-like symptoms, please do not send them to school. If they have hay fever, please provide a letter from your doctor.

Stage 3 Over the past few weeks in the Bounce Back program in Stage 3, we have been looking at keeping safe; specifically, ways to combat bullying as individuals and within our community. It is a topic which is visited regularly at school and it is important to keep discussing it as the students’ experiences and understanding develop over time.

Discussions have centred on bullying being unacceptable in our school and on how we are all responsible for making sure this happens. Our starting point for discussions was the Anti-Bullying Policy that is outlined in the Junior and Middle School Diary. Overall, the Stage 3 students felt the Policy covered the areas relevant to bullying at school. Students were asked to design a poster to promote our message of not tolerating bullying. The posters were done as part of our Online Learning and were a great mix of designs and messages. Well done Stage 3.

Orientation Days All of our students in Kindergarten to Year 7 2022 will have an Orientation Day on Wednesday, 1 December.

Our current Year 6 students will spend the day on the Senior School Campus whilst we will welcome our 2022 Kindergarten students to the school. All other classes will spend a large part of the day with their 2022 teachers.

Our current Year 7 and 8 students will have an orientation to the Senior School Campus on Friday, 3 December.

Our 2022 Preparatory students will also have an opportunity to spend some time with their new teacher and class during Week 9.

More information about these Orientation Days will be sent out to families soon.

Hats and Sun Protection Please ensure your child brings their hat to school each day. They must have a hat on to play outside at recess and lunch. I also recommend that the student apply sunscreen before they come to school.

Bullying No Way!

There is no excuse for bullying so here are some things that you can do to help protect yourself and those around you.

Tell Somebody.

If you or someone you know is experiencing bullying it is best to tell a trusted adult. This doesn't have to be a parent it could be a teacher, an older sibling or the school councilor.

Don't Show Them.

Even though it can be hard in the moment another strategy is to not let the bully get the sensation of seeing you react to them. It may not stop the bullying completely but they won't like the fact that your not bothered by them.

It Will Not Last Forever.

It can be hard but remembering the good things in your life when the bad things feel like they take over will help you. If you are experiencing bullying thinking about the good things in your life I feel will make you realize that you life isn't all bad and to keep reminding yourself that the bullying won't last for ever is also helpful.

Stage 4 After the rush of enthusiasm and excitement at reuniting with friends and classmates, Stage 4 students have quickly settled back into the routines of their classrooms. They have also shown a great deal of respect and responsibility in adhering to various Covid safety procedures that have been put in place.

Last Thursday, instead of the usual Active Afternoon activities, the students enjoyed a range of activities in their Core Class groups including, fitness, Bullrush, 2-ball soccer and a series of competitive relays.

As we move into warmer weather and cloudless skies, students are reminded to bring a water bottle, slap on some sunscreen and slip on their hats so that they can enjoy being outdoors for recess and lunch.

It is terrific to have the students back on campus and watch them catch up on weeks of missed social interaction. On their return, the students came back to many changes and I do commend them on the cooperation they have shown in helping staff enact our COVID safety plan.

HSC The HSC exams commence on Tuesday. All the very best to the Class of 2021.

Year 7-9 Exams The exam timetable has now been published. This should now give everyone added incentive with their classwork and homework for the remainder of the term. A large component of the exams will be multiple-choice. Making multiple-choice a focus is a strategy to enable teachers to develop this area of exam technique with their classes. Answering multiple-choice questions is not easy and involves explicit teaching of strategies to maximise marks. In the HSC, many exams have multiple-choice making up at least 20% of the total marks. I have been analysing HSC data for many years using the NESA issued program called Results Analysis Package. When doing this analysis, I always find it very common for students to underperform in multiple-choice compared to other areas of the exam. Multiplechoice is an obvious area where ‘value add’ can occur in the HSC, and to develop in this area, students need to understand the importance of answering these types of questions well before they start Year 12.

every student to supply their own mask. The College has masks as an emergency back up for those who don’t have one. I suggest students keep a reserve supply of masks in their locker.

Hats When students are outside, they must wear a hat.

Parents/carers are asked to ensure their child comes to school each day with the bucket hat, not a peak cap.

Co-curricular Prefects Last week, the students welcomed the opportunity to participate in Active Afternoons again. Still bound by sport restrictions due to COVID, Mr Wilkinson and Mr Adams organised a Walk and Talk activity that enabled the students to enjoy the company of others while engaging in physical activity. Throughout the walk, the students were given some challenges and activities. In this edition of The Roar, the co-curricular prefects introduce themselves and have written a report on the event.

Stage 5 report Today I was given an in-lieu class and got the amazing experience of ‘watching’ the Year 10 drama class practice their final assessment. As I experience the intensity and creativity these students can deliver, I wish I had more of a dramatic inner self. They worked cohesively as a group and the energy in the room was really evident.

As an educator of young people I truly believe there is a lot we can learn from students as they are also learning from us, the educators. I hope that I can inspire my students in the field of science as the drama students have inspired me, looking deeply into the art of drama and the workload required to perform to a believable standard. We often get caught up in our pigeon-hole world that it was rewarding to see something new in my day. Thank you, Year 10 drama, for making my day.

As we approach the end of the year, we have another great opportunity to put learning into practice. Year 9 will work through substantial STEM projects in a small group of their peers. This promises to be an interesting hands-on activity that will require a creative approach to applying technology and science. Year 10 have been in preliminary discussions about running some activities for our current stage 4 students as an introduction to the senior campus for next year. This will be an important step in helping students make the transition and provide a chance for year 10 to show some leadership skills. With a range of end of year assessments still to work through, there is plenty to squeeze in now we are back from lockdown. Keeping up the good hygiene and masks in class are two key ways we can help stay on campus for five more weeks.

Co-curricular Mr Justin Adams Director of Co-curricular

Walk N Talk Last Thursday for Active Afternoon, students participated in a Walk N Talk around the various ovals of the Scots Campus (East). Split up by COVID measures, each year group walked as sporting houses to gain house points for each lap completed.

The afternoon was made complete by COVID safe visits by our house captains to their peers across the year groups. Their encouragement was greatly appreciated and was used to engage students, building foundations for the competitions to follow into next year.

Collectively, students racked up an estimate of 2368 laps of the ovals, which equates to 947.2km – the equivalent distance of the Queensland border in just over an hour.

Students were encouraged to do bizarre tasks for extra points such as running backwards, the YMCA and even cartwheels! The competitive atmosphere was backed up by complementary lollies supplied by our supervising staff to provide that extra buzz for the end of the day.

Congratulations to Dunlop, who made the miles to knock Mawson off their current house supremacy podium. Could this be their year?

An Introduction of our Co-Curricular Prefects for 2022 Charlotte Lindsay My name is Charlotte Lindsay, and I am one of the forthcoming CoCurricular prefects for 2022. It is a privilege to have been given this role alongside David and Jack as we intend to grow further and develop the College Co-Curricular program. We hope to encourage and motivate students to participate in activities outside of school time.

Before coming to Scots All Saints College, I attended The Scots School for two years. I have been a boarder since Year 7 and love the boarding atmosphere that has been created since the two schools have merged. I have been heavily involved within the College, participating in Cattle Team for four years and competing in netball in winter and cricket/tennis in summer.

In Year 12, I will be studying Standard Maths, Advanced English, Biology, Agriculture and Primary Industries. When I leave school, I intend to take a gap year to go up to the Northern Territory and work on a cattle station. After my gap year I would love to come back and attend University and perhaps study a course in the Agribusiness sector. I am very passionate about Agriculture and would love to help the Cattle Team and the Equestrian Team grow.

Our short-term initiatives as a Co-Curricular team are to encourage and create school spirit. We will also be helping and organising activities for the upcoming Year 7 & 8 Orientation Day on the Senior Campus. continued page 10

David Hardie My name is David Hardie, and I am one of the Scots All Saints College CoCurricular prefects for the upcoming year. I am very grateful to be on the team and represent the College for the next 12 months, and I cannot wait to see what it has in store for us all.

Originally coming from a tiny village west of West Wyalong called Tallimba, coming to a place where there were many new and different people was a challenge for me in the earlier years of school. Still, through the Co-Curricular program the College offers, I have formed strong and long-lasting relationships with my mates here.

The College has a highly exemplary Co-Curricular program, and ever since Year 7, when I enrolled, I have been very proud to be a part of it. I take much pride in playing rugby at the College, and have played 3 summer sports, Cricket, Basketball, and as of most recently, Touch Football. These sports I have found to be incredibly fun and engaging, as well as promoting an amazing culture surrounding them all.

Being from Moree NSW, boarding has taken me through the College since Year 7, experiencing the many changes that it has faced over the recent times.

Despite these, I have formed unforgettable bonds with my mates and found an overwhelmingly positive sense of belonging and comradery in the process.

Rugby and Basketball are my two sports of choice, although my size and skill sometimes fall short, my coaches have always managed to find the better in me. The dedication of the College's sporting staff is second to none and never fails to find encouragement in the direst of situations. Due to these positive role models, I am always ready to have a go, no matter the size and skill of the opponents that I may face.

My school subjects include Economics, Chemistry, Music 2, Extension 1 Maths and English Advanced.

Most importantly, I have been a dedicated member of the Pipes and Drums since Year 7, participating in various College and wider community events. This is my favourite program of the Co-Curricular and education program at the College.

In terms of the music program, I love to take part in the big three ensembles in the College (Pipes and Drums since Year 8, Big Band since Year 8, and Symphonic Winds since Year 7). Although the pandemic has taken its toll in the last two years, we prefects, staff, and the students are all willing to work together and collaborate to keep everything running whilst following COVID guidelines.

The school subjects I take are Physics, Maths Advanced, English Advanced, Music 2 and Design and Technology.

FIFTY-FIVE YEARS AGO: THE EMPIRE ON WHICH THE MORTAR NEVER SET “The British may have had the empire on which the sun never sets. Here at Scots, we have the empire on which the mortar never sets”. According to Ian Pike, these words came from a Speech Day report by Cameron Alexander, who was Chairman of the Council of The Scots School, 1966-1982.

He was referring to a massive building program that transformed the Scots Campus from 1966 to the mid-1980s.

During the early part of this period, the Headmaster was Michael Aikman (1966-1973), whom the boys nicknamed Brickhead because of the amount of construction work that occurred in his time.

Before 1966, the school had seen some building work such as four army huts purchased from the closure of the Bathurst migrant camp, Cooerwull House (1952), the Aluminium Block 1956, and in 1956 the Swimming Pool and Dougan Wing. During 1966, the lower storey of the Science Block was built. By the time Michael Aikman left, plans already existed for the second storey that was opened in 1975 during John Hunter’s tenure. Also in 1966, the back section of Cooerwull House was added to cater for a growing number of boarders. This freed up space in Karralee that was renovated to become the administration offices. The Stable block was also refurbished.

Over the next few years, the Cameron Library and adjacent classroom was built and was the basis for later rebuilds in 1985 and 2018. The first stage of Bulkeley House was constructed, with the second stage following in 1971. The 1966. In 1972, The Kennel was moved to its present location to make way for Aikman Hall that was begun two years later.

The building program continued energetically during John Hunter’s time, with Thompson House (1979), the Dining Hall (1981), additions to The Kennel, and the Maths classrooms being added to the Dougan Wing (1982), the Tennis Courts (1983), the HSIE Quad and the construction of the Technics

Centre (1987) and Galloway House (1990). This work was largely paid for with a series of building fund appeals.

Michael Aikman took up a position as Headmaster of Haileybury College in Melbourne from 1974, where he remained until his retirement in 1998. His career before coming to Scots included being bowman for the goldmedal winning rowing eight at the Melbourne Olympic Games. He died in 2005. One Old Boy from his time recently paid tribute to him on The Scots School Old Boys and Girls Association Facebook page: Students flourished under Mr Aikman. He was like a breath of fresh air at a time when enrolments were declining and quickly gained the respect of students. I have extremely fond memories of my last years at Scots under his guidance.

The respect in which he was held was certainly borne out by the enrolment figures that rose from 130 at the beginning of his time at Scots to 209 when he left. They continued to grow during the 1970s and 80s.

Debating champions HICES has acknowledged the significant achievement of our Year 12 debating team in 2021.

Scots All Saints won 1st place in the Open Division in the Central and Western Region.

This formidable team were ready for further success until all debating competitions were cancelled due to COVID. Nonetheless, it is a wonderful effort, and many thanks go to Mrs Davis, Ms Sams (who mentored the team in Term 1) and Mr Maher for his continued and ongoing support of the debating program at SASC. Furthermore, Jonah Siede received a special award as the 1st placed champion debater of the Central West, whilst Simi Atluri achieved 2nd place. We do hope to have debating back up and running in 2022.

Academic debating skills are so very important for decent public discourse, and it is heartening to note that these fantastic young adults are so well skilled in this area, it augers well as they take up their positions in the world.
