End of Year Awards and Presentations For all schools across the world, the end of a school year has traditional award ceremonies where we acknowledge excellence in student work, reflect on the 23 November 2020 school’s successes, farewell those who are leaving and share plans for the next Orientation Day year.

Please note the location of each assembly, as some are planned to be held outdoors, weather permitting.

This is in line with the COVID-19 plan that has been put in place for each.

In the event of wet weather the assemblies will be held indoors, but unfortunately due to COVID restrictions only students will be able to attend.

Please note that students will need to wear full school uniform and need only attend for their allotted assembly time. Additionally, each assembly will be ‘live-streamed’ and an end-of-year address will be available on our website.

Coffee & Prayer Meeting – change of date and time Our final Coffee & Prayer meeting will now take place on Thursday 26 November in the Scots All Saints Chapel on Campus West, Eglinton Road.

Chickens on campus As part of their food technology unit in Design & Technology, Year 7 and 8 have been incubating chickens this year and learning about the production cycle. Students in the Middle School have also started their own 'Chicken Club' where students get together at recess and lunch and volunteer to look after the chickens.

There are currently six chickens and four roosters who

are very well loved and cared for, even receiving left over food from the dining hall. The students involved sell the free range eggs for 50 cents each or $5 per carton and they are in hot demand from students, teachers and staff.

All the money being raised goes back in to the Chicken Club to buy grain and support the expansion of the program.

Student Wellbeing Mr Tom van Gend Head of Student Wellbeing K-12 Senior School Student Leadership Development Program The 2021 Senior School Student Leaders were already announced in an earlier edition of The Roar. However, the program is by no means limited to these 23 students.

Scots All Saints College is committed to providing opportunities for all Year 12 students to be part of the development program. The program provides the chance for students to develop skills within a supportive environment in working within a team to devise ideas and implement ideas for activities, events and initiatives to enhance the experience of students at the College.

It should be noted that tertiary educational institutions and employers are increasingly looking beyond HSC marks when considering applicants for positions (and scholarships). Involvement as a member within a leadership committee is an excellent way for students to demonstrate active contributions to their school community.

The College is also committed to providing opportunities for students from Years 9-11 in 2021 to be part of the Student Leadership Development Program. Students in Years 9-10 in 2020 were invited to apply to be members of one team within the leadership program. (Students in Year 9 2021 will be invited early in Term 1 next year.) Team members actively assist inducted leaders and committees within their areas of responsibility. Being in a team allows students to see first-hand the workings within a program of their choice, allowing them to build their experiences in one or more programs prior to Year 12. Of equal importance, it is a vital way in which student voice across year groups is represented.

student teachers have successfully completed their training and add greatly to our programs. We thank them for the excellent work that they are doing with the Learn2Swim program and the Junior Sharks and Junior Dolphins squads.

Remembrance Day Ceremony We thank the new Prefects and Captains Team for their contribution to the Senior Campus Remembrance Day Ceremony last Wednesday. The students worked extremely well together and were well-led by the College Captains, Simi and Jonah. The team helped with the preparation of the program, the allocation of speakers and musicians and with the set up and pack up of the ceremony. Well done leaders!

SASC Swimming Academy - Additional Coach and Morning Squads We welcome Rhonda Hausfeld to our SASC Swimming Academy coaching staff. Rhonda has a wealth of experience with swimming in the local area. As a Life Member of the Bathurst City Amateur Swimming Club and strong qualifications we are fortunate to have Rhonda on our team. Rhonda is a Bronze (level 2) accredited coach who also holds a Swim Development coach qualification as well as being an accredited NSW starter, judge and referee. Rhonda’s passion for swimming started at a young age and has been a big part of her life. She believes that ‘Swimming is for Life’. She is driven by being able to give students the opportunity to love the water and to provide students with the technical aspects to improve their swimming.

Rhonda will add to our High Intensity Performance Squad (HIPS) on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6.30 am therefore giving our SASC Swimming Academy swimmers 4 mornings of coaching through until the end of the school year and into the summer and Term 1.

Teachers of Swimming and Lifeguard Graduates We were very pleased to present to the graduates of the Teacher of Swimming and Lifeguard training their graduation kits at the morning assembly on Tuesday. The students embraced the opportunity to get excellent training and skills in the aquatic field and many of them have already lined up work for the Christmas Holidays. We again thank, Mrs Inwood for her leadership of this aspect of our SASC Swimming Academy.

Representative Cricket Players This season, we have had quite a few cricketers performing well with representative cricket for Bathurst, as well as grade cricket on Saturday afternoons.

The change in this season’s structure has certainly allowed for players to ‘play more cricket’ than they usually would. Our honour board of local junior representative cricketers for Bathurst includes Angus Parsons, Zane Newham, Jayden Spackman and Lewis Schoenmaker (Bathurst 16s), Charlie Rendall, Archer Ryan and Lachie Munns (Bathurst 14s) and Benjie and Ned Anderson, Grayson Jacobsen and Callum Munns (Bathurst 12s).

COVID-19 - QR Code sign in for out of school hours visitors Please be aware that we are moving over to a QR code system for recording attendees at out of school hours’ events on our campuses. This system will replace the sign on sheets that we currently have for visitors for weekend sport fixtures and swimming academy parents. We thank you for your co-operation with this important process for contact tracing. We encourage our parents and friends to continue to support the processes being used by local sporting associations (e.g. Basketball stadium, Bathurst Junior Cricket, Bathurst Touch, etc.).

Senior Campus Athletics House Carnival On Tuesday 1 December we will hold a Year 9 to 11 House Athletics Carnival. The aim of the day will be to give all students an opportunity to represent their house, enjoy each other’s company in physical activity and to have some fun. A modified program of events will be offered with all entries to events open on the day. We also expect a few inter house novelty activities including a Tug-o-War, Sack race relays, a mixed 6 x 100m relay as well many of the usual athletics events. We encourage our Year 9 -11 students to be ready for a great house day – please make sure that you have your house shirt, singing/chanting voice, sun protection (hat and sunscreen) and drink bottles.

Lunchtime Co-Curricular Activities Beginning next Monday 23 November and running all week will be lunch time table tennis and chess. We encourage students wanting to have a ‘game’ to come along to the Aikman Hall and the outdoor chess board (back of the English block) for some lunchtime fun and competition.

Triathlon Students from Years 3-8 are invited to participate in the School Triathlon on Tuesday 1 December. Whilst this event is competitive, it is also a fun way for students to experience a great recreational activity with their classmates. Given the complexity of the event there are some guidelines the students need to consider before they enter the race. Students can enter as an individual participant or as part of a team.

Given the overwhelming response, there has been a need to alter the clinic times. A letter will be sent to families early next week informing them of the time their child will be participating in the clinics, Friday 27 November and Thursday 3 December.

National Youth Science Forum:

Inspiring young scientists Two Scots All Saints College students have been successful in gaining acceptance into the highly regarded and tightly contested National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). The NYSF is a national forum which aims to inspire Australia's leading young scientists and provides them with the opportunity to visit world-class research facilities, meet leading scientists and undertake cutting edge technology experiences. Austin Markwick and Jac Burge share their thoughts on this incredible opportunity.

Mrs Sarah O’Neill, Senior Learning Support and Enrichment JAC BURGE YEAR 11: Earlier in the year I was presented with the opportunity to apply for the 2021 National Youth Science Forum. This organisation runs a number of residential programs to encourage young people in their passion for science, technology, engineering and maths. Despite a few changes, the NYSF application process was relatively similar to what it has been in past years, with a number of stages I had to complete to be accepted into the program. The first step I took was submitting an online form, answering several questions about my interests, why I wanted to attend NYSF, and my ideas for the future of STEM. I was then interviewed by members of The Rotary Club of Bathurst, who agreed to sponsor me for the program.

After my online application was accepted, I entered the next stage of the process. I had another interview conducted by several NYSF coordinators and Rotarians to secure a place within my district. After a long wait, I received my official acceptance into the 2021 NYSF program, which I’m sure will present me with many excellent opportunities to learn about and explore the role of STEM and its importance in our future.

AUSTIN MARKWICK YEAR 11: As someone who has upheld a strong passion for Science since a very young age, it is an honour to have been provided with the opportunity to participate in the 2021 National Youth Science Forum. Successful applicants were short-listed from the first phase and were eligible for a Zoom interview conducted by Rotarians from our local district and distinguished

members of the STEM field in Australia. The questions were very diverse, ranging from personal to scientific subject matter and were tailored to challenge both the spontaneity and scientific knowledge bases of students.

Following the interview phase, the panel were finally able to select those students who would be participating in the NYSF program.

Provided the current COVID-19 circumstances, the program is operating differently in 2021, without the residential aspect of previous years where students stay at university campuses over Australia and have access to the advanced research facilities of these locations. The program has been redesigned to provide the same interactive experience of previous years in a virtual format, with virtual laboratory tours and online interviews with industry professionals on the agenda. The program has been divided into an ‘Organic’ and ‘Physical’ forum. The Organic forum specialises in medicine, biology and environmental sciences, while the Physical forum is centred around the areas of physics, engineering and computer science. In the future, I aspire to study Mathematics or Physics at university and hopefully transition to a post-graduate research level, so I have strong intentions of participating in the Physical forum and I am certain that the program will not only extend my knowledge on the admirable capabilities of science, but also introduce me to life-long friends and industry contacts.

Year 7 Visual Arts In Visual Arts, Year 7 have been looking at the contemporary practice of Appropriation. That is the recontexualisation of existing images or artworks to communicate a relevant message for today’s audiences.

To make artworks students have been addressing a number of key questions: What current issue, message or theme do I want to communicate?

What historical Artwork will I appropriate to communicate my message?

How will I make the artwork and what mediums will I use?

All four classes have been very productive and have had a heap of fun in the last 3 weeks creating appropriated artworks. Some students used digital media such as

Stage 2 Enrichment activities A number of Stage 2 students have enjoyed participating in weekly enrichment activities which have provided an opportunity for these students to develop their higher order thinking skills.

The first group, under the guidance of Mrs MIlligan has focused upon critical thinking skills through the use of logic grid puzzles, an atlas scavenger hunt, creative thinking exercises and building circuits with the software circuits program Makey Makey. The group has also used an approach called orbital studies which has allowed them to guide their own research projects. This has given students the opportunity to research a particular area of interest related to the First Fleet and choose for themselves how they would like to present their information.

Another group has met to develop their mathematical problem solving skills. The group, known as EVALU8, has explored eight different problem solving strategies CRITICAL THINKING GROUP that can assist them in solving challenging problems.

Using real objects to assist After focusing on one strategy per week the group progressed to a broader range of problems that required them to identify which strategy to use to solve a problem. Sometimes they were required to combine a number of strategies in multi-step solutions. The students have benefited immensely from the group and have developed their skills significantly. College participating in Relay for Life arisen as the houses fight to create a bigger and better figurehead to represent their House’s strengths and values.

Year groups from Year 9 through to Year 12 have been devising and collating their ideas and gathering support in as many ways possible to pull ahead and fundraise more than any other to donate to the Relay For Life cause.

As the school community is well aware, Scots All Saints College is participating in our own version of Relay For Life this year in partnership with the Cancer Council and their new initiative #RelayYourWay. All houses have been added to the NSW Relay For Life webpage, and all you need to do to donate is search up the house name which has caught your attention the most and enter a price, making sure you are on the NSW site and not another state’s.

All donation amounts are up on the website for the public to watch as the race continues and the places fluctuate, determining who will win. And most importantly, how much Scots All Saints College will contribute to the Cancer Council this year. We encourage all families and friends to get involved and keep your eyes peeled on all media platforms as the Houses compete, selecting which ones to donate too and supporting the health sector in this time of uncertainty.

The House Captains have also been busy preparing services at school involving prizes, secret messages and of course food to develop team spirit and increase their chances of winning the most raised before the event has even begun.

As Friday 4 December, Week 8 gets closer, and examinations cease for the majority of tudents, tensions will start to rise as each house contests to be the best. Flashes of the five colours have been seen flying around the school and chants declaring pride echoing throughout the cohort as we practice.

P and F Meeting The next P and F meeting will be held face to face in Week 7 on Wednesday 25 November, 5:30 pm in the Kemmis Building.

Performing Arts News “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything” – Plato As we near the end of the academic year we are given a wonderful opportunity to share the superb talents of our students. We may not have heard them publicly many times this year but they are very excited to share with you their Digital Showcase.

Over the last weeks, the Performing Arts Academy has had ensembles practicing, recording in the studio, shooting film and working hard to bring together a wonderful online event.

The 2020 Music Showcase will be streamed across our communication mediums and we invite you to set up your lounge room to experience the magic our students have created.

Five of our best College musicians performed in an online concert featuring the 2020 Scholarship winners from the Mitchell Conservatorium.

Students performed solo feature works which were streamed live on Facebook.

The soloists were accompanied by our Amadeus Academy coordinator Ms Liz Sargeant.
