A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Remembrance Day – 11/11/2020 Across our College campuses our students and staff gathered to express our gratitude to the women and men of our Country, who have served and continue to serve our nation in times of conflict.

We especially remember those women and men, who in the service of our nation, lost their lives on foreign shores.

There have been many students from our College who have served in places around the world to oppose the aggressive threats to our values and beliefs. Our College history begins in 1874 and students have seen battle in the Sudan, Boer War, The Great War (WWI), World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Malaya, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan.

We not only remember them and are thankful for what they have done, but we are, through our Remembrance Day Service, reminded of the human cost of conflict and challenged to find a better way.

Preparatory School 2021 - Orientation Days started this week Teachers and students were excited to welcome our new Preparatory School families to Orientation Day this week. There were a few nerves and tears as can be expected but many smiling faces as these young children took their first steps towards ‘big school’.

This orientation day is an opportunity for students already enrolled for 2021 to meet the teachers, make new friends and get used to the daily routine before starting in the new year.

Growth in Learning!

It’s always exciting at this time of year to look at some of the data coming through from our end of year assessments. We have some excellent systems in place in the Junior School to track growth in key areas of Literacy and Numeracy over the years.

Congratulations to all our students and the growth they have made in their learning. You have certainly all tried very hard!

Junior School Upgrade Following the exciting announcement of the Scots All Saints Preparatory School last week, planning continues to upgrade additional Junior School classrooms for 2021. Already this year we have expanded our Stage 2 classrooms to allow for more contemporary learning styles and in more recent times our 2021 Kindergarten classrooms have been stripped back and painted and are awaiting the arrival of new contemporary furniture. Promethean interactive boards will be added to each Kindergarten classroom in 2021. The new boards have lots of fun and interactive functions for teachers and students to use to assist them in their learning. Features of the boards include screen mirroring, pen and touch differentiation and some essential apps including a whiteboard, spinner, timer and annotation features.

Both Kindergarten rooms will also be fitted with contemporary classroom furniture during the summer break. All furniture items have been carefully researched and selected to enhance engagement and learning. Features include; akiako splat chairs, akiako bows, sled base chairs, connect tables, cookie seating pads, kneeler and paparoa tables and a large lotus table for collaborative learning. Furniture and wall colours have also been carefully selected and blended and wall felting will be added to the walls to display student work samples.

Year 1 and 2 will also be upgraded and to complete our 2020 classroom upgrade.

Orientation Day This week we welcomed many of our 2021 Prep class students to the campus for their Orientation Day. Whilst there were a few nerves at the start of the day there were lots of smiles and laughter throughout and at the end of the day.

On Monday 23 November all current students can wear their sport uniform to school as part our College Orientation Day. We will welcome new students to the College who are joining us next year and all students will ‘move up’ a year for a day of fun and challenging activities.

Junior School Excursions 2020 has been a year like no other so to celebrate the end of the year each of our year groups will be heading off on an action packed excursion.

Stage 2 are finalising preparations for their camp next Thursday 19 and Friday 20 November to Taronga Western Plains Zoo and Burrendong Sport and Recreation Camp. The camp will feature a Safari Savannah truck tour and some up-close animal encounters at night before some BMX riding, raft building and the giant slip n slide at Burrendong.

On the 1 December, Kindergarten and Year 1 will head off to Heritage Park. Students will listen to a story about some of the leading sheep and cattle breeds found in NSW in the famous Bathurst Sheep and Cattle Drome. They will watch the animals as they parade and move to their place on the stage.

There might even be an opportunity to milk a cow, feed some animals, and learn more about life on a farm in the country. A tractor ride will also be included.

Year 2 teachers are also planning a local excursion to the Bathurst Railway Museum and The Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum to consolidate learning from History and Science units this semester. continued page 3

This excursion will also feature a picnic in a local park.

All excursion venues have COVID Safety Plans. Further details regarding the Kindergarten- Year 2 excursions will be released soon and a small charge will be added to your next account to cover the cost of these excursions.

Year 4 Graduation and Fun Day Whilst we’ve been very fortunate to have continuity of learning this year, unfortunately many of our wonderful community events have had to be cancelled to keep our community COVID safe. One such event will be the Year 4 Junior School Graduation Dinner. Unfortunately, the Year 4 Graduation Dinner will not go ahead this year. Whilst we won’t be able to mark the occasion with a dinner we’re currently finalising plans with the help of our Year 4 students to celebrate the end of their time in the Junior School.

BYO Board Game- Public Speaking Program - 27 November The Scots All Saints College Public Speaking Program is an integral part of our academic program. The final task for 2020 is our Board Games Afternoon.

There are so many skills that students develop through playing board games; brain development, concentration, language and teamwork skills, problem solving and sportspersonship are just a few.

Kindergarten to Year 2 participating in Mountain Biking during Active Afternoons.

On Friday 27 November, we’ll be setting aside a session for students to play a range of board games with their peers. No preparation is needed for this one! Students can simply bring along their favourite board game (age appropriate) and settle in for a session of fun, problem solving, critical thinking and communication.

Remembrance Day Ceremony On Wednesday 11 November the Junior and Middle School students stopped and paid their respects to the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice representing our wonderful country at times of war. The Year 8 Student Leaders lead the ceremony which included an address by Captain Frank Tamsitt, Australian Army.

Innovation Centre Progress The building site in the middle of the campus continues to evolve. The building of our purpose built Innovation Centre will enable the College to pursue project based work that encourages the students to create, solve problems, collaborate and communicate.

New Outdoor Multi-Purpose Court The old basketball court at the back of the Bickerdike Centre has had a new surface installed, new back-boards fitted and a high fence erected around it. The finished product is a high quality facility that will be put to good use in both our Physical Education program and our Active Afternoons program.

Year 8 Farewell Due to COVID-19 restrictions we will not be holding the Year 8 Valedictory Dinner this year. The Year 8 students will participate in a Year 8 Fun Day on Wednesday 2 November which will provide them with an opportunity to celebrate their graduation from the Middle School.

Examinations Congratulations to our Year 12 students who have now completed their HSC Exams. There have been lots of cheers and smiling faces and we are so pleased to see this milestone completed. We are looking forward to celebrating with Year 12 on Friday 27 November. HSC Examination results are due Friday 18 December. As per our tradition, a BBQ brunch will be held for Year 12 students and staff on that day; invitations will be sent to students.

The Year 9 Yearly Examinations commence this week (12-17/11) and Year 10 Examinations run through Week 6B (17-20/11). All students have been provided with an Exam Timetable. If your child will be absent for an exam, please contact their Year Co-ordinator.

New student Orientation Day We are looking forward to meeting our 2021 new students at Scots Campus Orientation Day Monday 23 November. Mrs Ellery has been communicating with families and more information will be forthcoming shortly.

Hats The College uniform policy clearly states that students must be wearing the College dress hat to and from school and a sports hat if outside during break times. A quick visual survey would suggest that very few students are wearing either the formal dress hat or a sports hat and I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents that these can be purchased at the Uniform Shop on the All Saints Campus.

Educating our young people about the importance of caring for their skin is a joint responsibility and I would ask parents to assist in this endeavour by ensuring their child has the required hats.

Mathematics problem solving extension groups There are three groups of students on the All Saints campus who are involved in weekly mathematical problem solving activities.

EVALU8 This group is made up if students from Years 3 and 4 who have learnt a range of problem solving strategies and are beginning to apply these strategies to challenging problems.

4MUL8 This group meets before school on a Tuesday morning and is made up of students from Years 5 and 6. These students, having developed a range of problem solving strategies, participate in the Junior section of the highly regarded Australasian Problem Solving Mathematic Olympiad competition. The group has worked diligently throughout the year and have recently received their results. All of the students should be congratulated on their achievement with special mention to the following students for being placed in the top five of our school competitors: 1st Place – Benjamin Reynolds 2nd Place – Charles Croaker 3rd Place – Erin Taylor 4th Place – Grayson Jacobsen 5th Place – Matthew Slater CALQL8 The CALQL8 group is made up of mathematicians from Years 7 and 8 who have worked enthusiastically each Thursday morning before school. School community encouraged to support Relay for Life

When : Friday Week 8, 2pm till 3pm (December 4th) Where : Scots Campus oval Relay for Life is an annual initiative run by Cancer Council, in order to raise awareness and funds for the vital work they do across the country.

Their projects include screening and early intervention, education, support services and research initiatives, all significant in the battle against cancer. Historically, this event has been held at the All Saints Campus, however due to COVID-19 restrictions the event, scheduled to be in March, was postponed.

Consequently, Cancer Council announced a new social media driven initiative #RelayYourWay, which allows for communities to remotely support the cause and adhere to the restrictions in place. Scots All Saints is delighted to continue its support of this event, and led by the social justice team, host a fundraising event at the end of this term. We are also excited to announce this initiative, in conjunction with the College House Captains, as this is the beginning of a new inter-house competition centered around fundraising and service to others, an expansion of the traditional inter-house sporting competitions.

shared over various media platforms to include the Bathurst community where you can watch as the school houses battle to raise the most money by the end and claim the title of champion.

We encourage SASC families to donate through the Relay For Life website where we will have five teamsthe school houses- ready to be supported in their healthy competition. As for students, make sure to collect any spare gold coins to bring into school on the friday in promise of games, food and prizes galore.

The House Captains will be holding a variety of events, in both the lead up to, and on the day of, the event, ranging from the classic jelly bean guess, to tug-of-war competition, to food stalls. Students are encouraged to wear their school sports uniform, with their house shirts on the day to foster the bright and positive message that supporting such a prominent and vital organisation encourages.

We hope the school community can continue its support for Cancer Council’s Relay for Life in face of the detrimental effects that the health service industry has taken from this year’s events; proving yet again the resilient nature of rural Australians and develop the value of service to others.

Young Rural Achievers 2020 Prior to the cancellations of all shows our Cattle Team members participated in the 2020 Young Rural Achievers Competition which is always linked to Bathurst Royal show. The students are required to submit a letter and resume and then they are interviewed by a panel and asked questions relating to Agricultural issues and the role they play in our rural community. They are also asked questions relating to their future goals in the Agricultural industry.

Many students enter this competition and our students have achieved amazing results against other schools in the Central West.

Congratulation’s goes to all students for the wonderful job they did in all areas of this competition. The skills they learn along the way in writing resumes and having interviews is of paramount importance.

I would like to thank all students and in particular our older students who provided beautiful support and leadership to our younger and first time students during this process.

A few reminders from us as the school year winds down for 2020.

• All books currently on loan are due back to the library by the 27 November. Emails listing overdue resources will be sent out over the next week as a reminder.

• Students will then be most welcome and indeed encouraged to borrow for the holiday period.

• The Scholastic Book Club’s Christmas edition will be distributed to classes on the ASC campus this week. Some great Christmas gift ideas are included in the catalogues. The 20 November is the closing date for any orders.

On behalf of the library staff on both campuses, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our students and their families a very happy Christmas and holiday break with lots of reading time!

1000 Dresses for Grandmothers

As the festive season is quickly approaching, together as a boarding community we aim to foster the most important value of our Christian community at Christmas time- giving.

The Fitzroy Valley in Western Australia is home to many remote indigenous communities who work tirelessly to provide clothing for their children and grandchildren. As a consequence, there is often little left for the Grandmothers, leaving them with ripped, stained and oversized clothing made from scraps of material.

In order to overcome this problem, the Marninwarntikura Women’s Resource Centre have

developed an initiative to collect 1000 dresses in 12 months which will be gifted to the elderly indigenous women living in the Fitzroy Valley community, WA. How can you help you may be asking?

We are asking for donations from both boarding and day families of lightweight women’s clothing (ideally size 14+) including dresses, shirts and pants. The resource centre also accepts donations of men’s and children’s clothing, shoes, household items and toys, especially as we approach the Christmas season.

Donations can be left at the reception building on both campuses and will be packaged and sent to Western Australia at the end of this term. For those who are able, we ask that you support this worthwhile cause and support those in need.

As 2020 draws to a close, working with important organisations such as the Marninwarntikura Women’s Resource Centre, provides our boarding community with an opportunity to reflect and give thanks that we are able to attend Scots All Saints College.

Year 10 Science create 3D models Year 10 Science students created a 3D model of a very small section of a polyethylene molecule. Polyethylene is a very commonly used ‘plastic’ that is derived from crude oil and contributes to the global issue of ‘plastic pollution’.

The study of polymers is a brief introduction to Organic Chemistry and it exposed the students to the role of chemical engineers in developing new materials, particularly plastics with properties that suit a vast range of purposes, including biocompatibility and biodegradability. Students will continue on to analyse how social, ethical and environmental considerations can influence decisions about scientific research related to the development and production of new materials.

COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe Dear Parents and Carers, With the completion of the HSC yesterday, we are now able to wind back some of our COVID-19 restrictions on the Scots Campus and align our precautionary measures to what has been happening on the All Saints Campus. Specialist teachers have been notified that they are able to resume classes on Scots Campus and we look forward to hosting a Covid-Safe Orientation program for new students to the Senior School in 2021 later this month.

Another aspect of the wind back in restrictions is that in some limited circumstances permission may be granted for parents, carers and visitors to enter our campuses. If you have cause to attend the campus and permission is granted from the Head of Campus or Head of College, we ask that you always present to Reception and sign-in upon arrival. This will enable us to maintain the necessary records should the need for contact tracing arise. As part of this, our IT department has enabled the QR Code feature for our “Who’s on Location” program. If ever you’re authorised to visit the College outside of business hours, you will be asked to use this feature to sign in.

This enables us to maintain a single electronic record of who attends campus and when.

As always, please be vigilant and if you have any symptoms get tested and self-isolate until you’ve returned a negative result. The Protocols concerning COVID-19 and absence from school can be found on the College website via this link. If you have any other questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me.
