A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Next Week We are delighted to welcome back all day and boarding students from Monday, 25 October. As previously advised, this return is in line with Level 3 Plus health advice, which relates to regional schools returning from lockdown rules. While we welcome all students back, there are significant restrictions still in place impacting the kinds of things schools can do and who can visit the campuses.

Next Year Over the past 18 months, the College Council, Senior Management team and teaching staff have been monitoring and evaluating the best structures for the future operations of the College. We have

been reviewing all aspects focusing on the academic, pastoral and overall developmental needs of all our children. Also influencing our thoughts has been the fantastic growth in College enrolments due to its immediate success. Currently, our Preparatory School is full at 100 students for 2022 and we will expand this in the next year. Boarding enrolments have maxed out and the Boarding School is full from 2022, additional K-6 classes have been added for 2022 and enrolment numbers for each year group, 7-12 are almost 100 per age group.

With population growth in Bathurst and the region predicted to continue, the College Council has carefully reviewed the future structures of the College across our two magnificent campuses. The College is in a unique position to expand and add significant educational options for its students. We have already made many improvements with the establishment of the STEM Centre, The Preparatory School for 4-year-old children, the refurbishment of Ives Senior girls boarding, the establishment of the Agricultural Research Centre and the expansion of the Equestrian Centre.

Our future plans, commencing in 2022 include the refurbishment of Cooerwell and Bulkeley houses as day student Hubs and learning centres, the expansion and rebuilding of the current Science and TAS areas into a modern integrated STEM Centre and the completion of the next stage of boarding with the expansion of Galloway House to increase boarding capacity beyond 2022.

It’s an exciting time for the College.

From the start of 2022, the College structures will be refined.

Years P-6 will operate on the Junior School Campus on Eglinton Rd. Years 7-12 will operate on the Senior School Campus on O’Connell Rd. Years 7-12 Boarding will operate from the Senior School Campus on O’Connell Rd. Heads of the Junior School Campus, Mr Jackman and the Senior School Campus, Mr Weeding will be providing comprehensive details to you about these changes and Mr Le Couteur, Head of Boarding, will be in discussion with Boarder parents.

Psalm 139 – Running towards the light of the world Last week, King David’s Psalm (1000BC) shared with us that we are intimately known by God. David states that God knows our every thought and action, indeed before a word is on our tongue, God knows it completely. As David reflects upon this thought and his own selfish character, he starts to become overwhelmed (see Psalm 139 below). Instead of embracing this idea, David’s initial reaction is to run away. He is overwhelmed with his own sinfulness and unworthiness that he wants to get as far away from the presence of this holy God. David’s reaction is the normal human response – as who wants to be reminded of their own fallen and broken character before the presence of a perfect God? Moses didn’t (1800BC) “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh? (Exodus 3:11). The Prophet Isaiah didn’t (700BC) – “Woe to me, I am ruined, for I am a man of unclean lips …” (Is 6:5). Nor did the Apostle Peter when he first met Jesus, “Depart from me Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). David is so desperate to get away from God that he wants to go to some dark and lonely place.

What drives an individual to such despair? David, like these other above mentioned believers, recognises that he is not worthy of God’s attention. As David starts to reason through running away, he realises that there is nowhere to run to, as God is everywhere – even in the darkest and loneliest place. This thought is both confronting and comforting. The great hope is that you and I might spiritually move from the confronting (recognising that we are not worthy of God’s holiness, attention and love) to the comforting (instead of running away, we run to him, embracing him with all our heart, mind, body and soul, and having the ugly side of our life washed away by the sacrifice of his son, Jesus Christ). The stumbling block to this transition is always our own pride. David’s stubborn pride, along with the above mentioned believers, had to be broken down so that trust could spring forth in their life. They, then, could embrace love, forgiveness, and begin their eternal relationship with their loving God. This is my story, may it be yours also.

Junior School 2022 - A Distinct Advantage In 2022 the Junior School will establish its own identity as a unique (Prep to Year 6) school of choice in the Central West. Locating the Preparatory School and the Primary Years on their own campus will unite students through a clearer school identity, align teaching practices and enhance student learning journeys and leadership opportunities. The Junior School, located in Llanarth on Eglinton Road, is in the prime location for young families in Bathurst to easily access, and we are blessed with facilities and grounds that are spacious and second to none. The newly developed Preparatory School, the amazing Innovation Centre, the gymnasium and swimming pool, all provide teachers with facilities that allow them to take their teaching and learning experiences to the next level.

A stand-alone Junior School provides greater flexibility in all aspects of both the curricular and co-curricular programs. Having autonomy of the timetable in the

Junior School provides opportunities for the day to be structured so that learning of core subjects can happen in the morning and teachers can have opportunities to meet for professional development and planning whilst their classes are at specialist lessons together.

Our Year 6 students will have the opportunity to take on many leadership roles. We will have Junior School Captains and House Captains, Peer Support Leaders and members of all year groups will have the opportunity to represent their class on the Student Representative Council. The new structure will re-establish Year 6 as a significant year of schooling, which will set them up for their transition to Senior School.

Future Focused Learners Scots All Saints College Junior School aims to provide a truly transformative educational experience, where students can flourish on their journey to develop the skills and initiative to be active contributors and agents of change in their future world. Learning how to learn and think through the acquisition of transferable skills gives our students the best possible chance of success in the constantly changing world in which they exist. In 2022, all Junior School students will have specialist Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) lessons. Our STEM program will be an inquiry-based and conceptdriven transdisciplinary model of learning and teaching - building creators, investigators, communicators and collaborators.

All Junior School students will participate in a Peer Support Program, which focuses on building resilience and developing a sense of empathy. In class, the award-winning Bounce Back Program offers students more opportunities to develop character strengths and skills to cope with the challenges of growing up.

Service Learning Program Through our targeted and age-appropriate Service Learning Program, Scots All Saints Junior School students will develop an understanding of the importance of looking after each other now and in the future. Participation in activities such as RUOK Day and Pink Ribbon Day provides opportunities for students to realise that there is more to life than just looking after yourself. Visiting local nursing homes and participating in other community service events will help students develop a sense of compassion.

Co-curricular Program Junior School students will have the opportunity to participate in competitive sport teams as well as internal school sports, which all focus on encouraging children to be active and healthy. There will be Infants and Primary musicals and opportunities for children to practice dance. There will also be the introduction

of SASC Creations, which will allow students to pursue interests in cultural and technology pursuits.

After School Care We will continue to run our nationally registered and accredited After school care program in the Preparatory School area. This will be available to all students on the Junior School Campus.

The evolution of our College to have the students from Year 7 and 8 join the Senior Campus will mean we now have a vibrant synergy of the three secondary stages (Stages 4, 5 and 6) working together.

One cannot underestimate the role that modelling and peer mentoring has on the development of students. When students in Stage 4 start at ‘high school’, they instantly observe the actions of the older students and it is a natural instinct for the younger students to look up to their older peers.

Our new prefects are acutely aware of this and they are already planning for the arrival of the junior students. Our prefects want to ensure that one of their legacies is to ensure a successful transition of the junior students to this campus through social modelling and servant leadership. Lauren Cant and Hamish Siegert, our College Captains for 2022, have introduced themselves in this edition of The Roar.

While it is important that there is effective interaction and mixing of secondary students, it is also essential we recognize that each Stage has unique differences in terms of social, physical and cognitive differences. We are blessed to have such spacious grounds on Campus East that will cater for everyone. To this end, Cooerwull House will provide an ideal base for the Stage 4 students and will ensure they have easy access to the Old Boys Oval.

The Stage 5 space in front of the Day House, leading down to McKibbin Oval, provides students in Years 9 and 10 with the space they need to be as active or as passive as they want. The two senior courtyards on either side of The Stables, coupled with the newly renovated senior common room for Year 12 students, provide an area for the Stage 6 students commensurate with their needs as young adults.

The senior school staff are eagerly anticipating the arrival of Years 7 and 8. Teachers in subject specialty areas relish the opportunity to teach across all of Years 7 - 12 in their subject area and many have commented that they will feel like true secondary

teachers when they have the opportunity to teach across the range of age groups from 7 to 12.

In the near future, details will be provided about the orientations days that will occur later this term.

Bring on 2022! We are very much looking forward to welcoming Years 7 and 8 to Campus East.

Stage 6 report Year 12 2021 Year 12 have been back on campus this week where they have been engaging in seminars with their teachers. Great to see their smiling faces around the campus. This week the College will be presenting the Year 12 Virtual Assembly this Friday evening. All families will have received and e-invite with all information for this wonderful event. Ms Jones and Mr Bailey will start the evening with a Zoom welcome to get things started and make sure everyone has the URL needed for Youtube. The Virtual Assembly will be streamed on the College Youtube channel. Families are encouraged to subscribe to Youtube (no charge) so they can view the event. A URL will be sent to all families by Friday so they can stream and enjoy from home. We look forward to seeing the College Community rally together and enjoy celebrating the achievements of Year 12 2021.

Year 12 2022 Year 12 Students will be returning to the college campus on Monday. I know all staff are excited to see them and finally have face to face lessons. Zoom has been great but we are more than ready to interact in person, socialise and just have some fun. Year 12 have approached the start of the HSC with rigour, commitment and excitement. They have taken the reins with both hands and I know staff have been immensely impressed with their effort and application during these challenging first few weeks. All students have been provided with a mentor from the senior staff.

Mentors have been busily reaching out to the students and have started to map out study routines and goals.

A big thank you to Greg Jones for his work behind the scenes for his work in organizing the mentoring program for our students.

We look forward to the sights and sounds of a busy campus next week and we are very proud of how all the students have diligently approached their work during their time away from the college.

The College Captains

My name is Lauren Cant. I am one of the upcoming College Captains for 2022. I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to lead our school, and hopefully to continue to build and develop a healthy and welcoming culture

within our school, continuously encouraging students to display our College values, knowledge, faith, respect and compassion. I have been a part of Scots All Saints College since 2019, the year of the merge. I was a student at All Saints College from Kindergarten to Year 8, prior.

I am very excited about Stage 4 joining Campus East. The prefects are looking forward to easing the transition and being models for the students. Entering Year 12, I am going to be studying Advanced English, Advanced Mathematics, Chemistry, PDHPE and Music 1. I am heavily involved with the College sports program, and I thoroughly enjoy being a part of it.

This is one of my favourite aspects

of the College. I play basketball and touch football in the summer, and netball in the winter.

Alongside sport, I also love music.

I sing and accompany myself with the acoustic guitar. I perform at local cafes and restaurants, and sometimes at weddings. Music is a significant part of my schooling, and I really enjoy and appreciate the music program offered at our school. After completing Year 12, I am hoping to apply for a Gap Year overseas to work and travel.

Afterwards I hope to attend University and study an allied health profession, nursing, midwifery or radiology. I am thrilled to be leading the College, and cannot wait to be back on campus with everybody.

My name is Hamish Siegert, and I will work alongside Lauren as the 2022 College Captains. I cannot wait for an exciting year ahead and feel very proud to be able to represent the members of the College community.

Lauren and I, along with our leadership team, are very excited

to implement our new ideas to further develop our College, especially with the integration of the students from Year 7 and 8 to Campus East.

I began my schooling life at All Saints College from Kindergarten and finishing here at the end of Year 8. A fresh start at Scots All Saints College in Year 9 was exciting seeing two great schools merge and bringing out the best of the respective schools.

Personally, I love to participate in as many sports and co-curricular activities around the school.

Playing rugby in winter and cricket in summer, these sports have taught me the key values in life of respect and compassion for teammates and opposition. I love how these two values are taught to

us at this school, as I believe they go a long way in developing us into young adults in this growing society. This year the subjects I will study include, Advanced Maths and English, PDHPE, Biology and Economics.

Past year twelve, I would love to go on a gap year and travel the world learning about new cultures whilst carrying on playing sports worldwide. Once I have completed my travels, I would like to go to University to study Physiotherapy or Sports Science. I can’t wait to see what great initiatives our 2022 leadership team is able to add to this College community next year and I cannot wait to get back on campus at school and see all the members of our College.

Vale: Jim Pitcher (aged 71 years)

An unbelivable Journey!

We received sad news last week that Jim Pitcher had passed away. Jim was a wonderfully generous and patient man who volunteered his time to lead our RFS Cadet Firefighting program on the Senior Campus. His involvement and dedication to this program extended for well over a decade.

Jim formed caring and respectful relationships with the students and staff members he led through the program each year. His service was always greatly appreciated and he will be fondly remembered and sadly missed. We extend our condolences to his family and friends.

Jim is pictured above with some of our current Year 12 students (Simi, Campbell, Samantha, and Tom) at the RFS Field Day and Graduation in November 2019.

As demonstrated in this action photo, Jim was always on hand to give the students advice and encouragement whilst helping the students to build confidence and develop strong teamwork and leadership skills.

Bonjour Bathurst had the privilege to interview a Wallabies legend Morgan Turinui, an inspirational commentator, generational talent and sensational player.

In our conversation with Morgan he reflects on living the dream playing International Rugby. From humble beginnings running around the fields as a five-yearold, to playing school boy rugby, and finally progressing to the NSW Waratahs, his career has been one of excellence. He then burst on to the Super Rugby scene, progressing seamlessly into one of the most proficient players in the modern game. His passion and pride was evident.

Morgan spent five years in France as a player and then a coach. In the interview he comments at length, how grateful he is for having had the opportunity to live and work in the South of France.

The Classic Wallabies intend to visit Bathurst next year to run training sessions. Morgan has guaranteed us that Scots All Saints College will be a priority to call upon.

REV. ALAN DOUGAN

The name of the Rev. Alan Dougan (1909-1982) figures prominently in the history of The Scots School. Born in Ashfield in Sydney and trained at St Andrew’s College at Sydney University, Rev Dougan was called to the Presbyterian ministry at Balranald, N.S.W. (1932), followed by Blayney (1936) then Bathurst in 1939. He served as a Chaplain to the Militia (1940-1942), and to the Royal Australian Air Force (1942-1945) Whilst the Presbyterian minister in Bathurst in 1942, Rev. Dougan became involved in the search for a site for the Scots College Branch School. He helped Scots College to find “Karralee”, which was then leased for the duration of the war. He served on the local advisory committee that assisted with the running of the Branch School until it closed at the end of 1945.

As the closure of the Branch School became imminent, Rev. Dougan and a committee of local Bathurst Presbyterians had been campaigning for the establishment of a church school in Bathurst. Their efforts were successful, and Scots College, Bathurst (later renamed The Scots School) opened in 1946. The Branch School site of “Karralee” was purchased for the new college during 1946. Rev. Dougan served as

chairman of the council of the college for the next ten years. He was also the new school’s Chaplain.

A future Scots chaplain, Rev. Angus Ewin, served as Rev. Dougan’s assistant in Bathurst. The Deputy Chairman of the Council for much of Rev Dougan’s time was Mr Edwin Ray, the school’s neighbour.

In 1956, Rev. Dougan was elected as Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in New South Wales. The following year he took up an appointment as Principal of St Andrew’s College, Sydney University, a position he held until 1974. Whilst Principal of St Andrew’s, he obtained a Master of Arts from Sydney University, and drafted two documents proposing the union of the Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian churches, although he continued with the Presbyterian Church after the Uniting Church was created in 1977. Art and religious faith were a major interest of Rev. Dougan’s. There is a watercolour attributed to him at the Betty Ives Archives Centre. He served as a judge and committee member for the annual Blake Prize for religious art. He also wrote fourteen entries for The Australian Dictionary of Biography for leading Australian Presbyterians.

Students are to present to Mrs Norris in Mr Weeding’s office to sign-in and out of school.

In particular, if a student can’t make it to Period 1 by 8.55am, they must follow this procedure.

Students are required to have written permission to leave school early so please be sure to have your permission note if you need to leave during the day, or preferably an email that will have been sent by a parent/carer in advance.

Absence emails are not to be sent by students.
