Announcement of the new Innovation Centre Plans are nearing completion for the new Innovation Centre to be constructed at the Junior/Middle School Campus in 2020.

The Innovation Centre will be used for interdisciplinary teaching and learning and will consist of five interactive laboratories which focus on the following areas: 1. Design Learning Lab – explores the world of engineering, manufacturing and robotics.

2. Bodies Learning Lab – explores the world of healthcare, medicine and wellness 3. 4. Growth Learning Lab – explores the production of food and agriculture in intensive environments 5. Digital Learning Lab – explores the digital world of data, coding, industry and security 6. Young inventors – building entrepreneurial capabilities from idea to concept and pitching the market Funding Funding for this project has been secured through two major sources.

The first is the Commonwealth Government which supports our initiative to promote best practice interdisciplinary teaching focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects.

Most significantly is the contribution made by the College Foundation which has made a $750,000 grant to the project. This, along with the government contribution makes the Scots All Saints Innovation Centre a reality.

Foundation Chairman, Mr Bruce Clydesdale has written to me stating that the Foundation is very pleased to support the College STEM/Innovation Centre.

The Foundation, which was established in 1979, as part of All Saints’ College, has supported the building of many facilities in the past and is delighted to support the new College in this project.

Students attend Youth Drought Summit Will Thomas from Tullamore, Holly Stokes from Nyngan, Felicity Webb from Oberon and I were lucky enough to be chosen from Scots All Saints College, Bathurst to participate in the Youth Drought Summit held in Lake Macquarie on 9-11 October 2019.

There were 88 participants from 57 different places and between us we lived on over 700000 acres. The Summit went over three days and we learnt so much and met so many new friends, many of which we will continue networking with and no doubt come across throughout our futures.

Over the three days we participated in activities including traditional aboriginal meditation, dance and talked about the creation. Afterwards we got to choose between high ropes challenges and kayaking for an afternoon activity. We chose to do the high ropes course due to it being a bit cold and windy on the Lake and the fact that we wanted to get Holly up high which she wasn’t keen about. It was certainly a chance for us to be out of our comfort zones. I had my first experience flying and then navigating Sydney Airport.

We also listened to key speakers regarding mental health in our drought communities and were able to discuss with people who have been through hard times because of the drought and ways they have persevered throughout those difficult times. We later broke into small groups to discuss solutions and ways we can help and support each other through the impacts of drought.

To know that other young people are experiencing hard times as well was reassuring but of course concerning. We can’t stop droughts from occurring but we can certainly find ways to support each other through them and indeed the other tough times we experience living in rural Australia..

Overall it was a fantastic experience and I was so fortunate to have met some great people over the few days.

Student Wellbeing Mr Tom van Gend Head of Student Wellbeing K-12

Student Leadership Development Program I would like to add my congratulations to the 2020 student leaders who were inducted on Tuesday last week. Of course, the leadership program is not about a badge, it is about working to improve the College experience for all of our students. To this end, the leaders have already met with Mr Weeks, Ms Leaf and myself to outline their ideas for activities, events and initiatves that will be taking place this term.

We have also commenced work on the second phase of the leadership program. All students in Year 12 2020 have been invited to nominate for membership within committees for each House and for each prefect program area.

We are determined to ensure that all senior year students have the opportunity to be part of the leadership program as it will provide them the opportunity to learn and practise skill that will continue to benefit them after they leave school.

Membership on a committee is a terrific way to demonstrate community involvement to prospective tertiary institutions and/or employers.

Finally, it is a wonderful opportunity for students to 'give back' to the College during their final year.

There is a vast well of talent and ideas within our senior student group and it would be wrong not to harness this for the benefit of all students.

Once committees are finalised, we will initiate the process for students in other year groups to nominate to be team members within each of the program areas.

This will provide interested students with early opportunities to develop skills in leadership.

It is also a vital component in ensuring that the student voice is heard and heeded throughout the College.

ELES Online Study Skills Handbook Great news! The College has subscribed to the ELES Online Study Skills Handbook.

The handbook provides a comprehensive and interactive online guide for the school community (students, parents and teachers) as to the study skills needed for success in high school.

We aim to formerly incorporate this into our pastoral care program in 2020 but in the meantime we have access to the program for the remainder of this year. Given that Years 7 – 10 all have exams later this term, we encourage you and your students to access the wonderful study skills and examination tips available in the handbook now.

Pre-Kindergarten News

Pre-K 3 have been talking a lot about kindness this year. To coincide with our learning of the letter ‘q’ this week we have all committed to this by stamping our hands and making a ‘Kindness Quilt’.

Pre Kindergarten have started Term 4 Maths exploring volume and capacity. We read Mr Archimedes Bath by Pamela Allen together then experimented by adding animals to our own 'bath'. We loved watching the change in water levels.

On the airwaves – student radio ads Wish to invite All new family members of the Pipes and Drums to be involved with the

Last term we started a regular weekly radio “Education Wrap” featuring Head of College, Mr John Weeks and some of our students who tell listeners about what they value about their learning environment. These are recorded at Scots Campus by our senior students involved in the media and technical group of the new Performing Arts Academy. These radio ads are being played currently on Thursday mornings on Triple M radio in the Orange region and we hope to extend the listening audience in the near future. These mini-podcasts will also be housed on the Scots All Saints website from next week.

Here are the latest recordings featuring Grace Byrnes and Charlie Croaker from Year 4 to promote the Junior School Musical and Amadeus Music Academy.

European Tour a great adventure for students On Saturday morning, 28 September, the Scots All Saints College European tourists embarked on their great adventure. After a few airline dramas during our transit, we were well and truly ready for the fun to begin by the time we reached Munich Airport. We were greeted by our wonderful Tour Manager Ilaria, or 'Lala' as she would come to be known. Our first stop was Nuremberg, two hours north of Munich.

Nuremberg has a Medieval town at its centre and was the spiritual home of the Nazi Party due to its central role in formerly powerful German dynasties. We stayed in a hotel adjacent to a Medieval fortress wall and watchtower, with a reconstructed little village next door. It was a very German experience!

While there we visited the Nazi rally grounds, the courts of the Nuremberg trials, Nuremberg Castle and of course many local restaurants, squares and shops. It is a beautiful spot which I am sure that all of the students could recommend. We then went onto Berlin, which is a 'not so traditional city'.

WWII guilt is still highly evident in the rhetoric of the tour guides, with Berlin in particular at pains to distance itself from its past. Nonetheless, its many museums give narrative tales of the rise of the Nazi Party and the atrocities implicit in their radical ideology. The students immersed themselves in this history and came away with a great knowledge of that era.

The day at the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp was humbling and moving. After what was quite a heavy Berlin experience, we left for the vibrancy of Italy!

There is no better way to start a Bay of Naples adventure than a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Naples, which houses some of the most exquisite artefacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum. It certainly inspired awe. Not as much as the driving habits of the locals however, as babies being carried by mothers on motorbikes whilst zipping in and out of chaotic traffic created immense entertainment for our slow bus ride. The Bay of Naples is an amazing place. We visited the ancient towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, stayed in Sorrento, visited the island of Capri, and went for an exhilarating drive through the Amalfi Coast to Paestum, a 120-hectare ancient ruin encircled by its original defensive wall. What a magnificent few days! We finally left the region for Rome, with all of its imperious architecture, quaint alley ways, friendly people, shopping and exploring. History is literally around every corner. A lifetime’s worth of pizza, pasta and gelato was consumed on our Italian leg of the tour – lucky we walked a lot!!

I would like to thank the students for their excellent behaviour, what was a magnificent but exhausting experience. Academy Travel were outstanding as usual.

However, the biggest thanks goes to the staff, Lizzy Moller, Lynne Woodlock and Stacey Tomlinson who guided the students on their adventure of a lifetime. It wouldn't have been possible without them. Ciao ciao!

AFX Camp 2019 In the first week of the school holidays Xavier Adams, Alex Jonker, Lachie Collins, Jake Young, Matilda Knox and I got on a bus at 1 in the morning to head to AFX at Holsworthy.

AFX is a cadet camp run by the army for all cadets from 7-12 in NSW. We were on the camp with everyone in battalion 25.

This includes the Cobar, Cowra, Bathurst, Mudgee cadet units plus a few more. We were based in Holsworthy and then midway through the camp we moved to Madura (ACT). Throughout the camp we got to do many fun activities like capture the flag, lantern stalks, camouflage and concealment, live fire shooting as well as shooting at the WTSS and much more. We also got to look at, climb in and even ride in

army vehicles. We learnt about using radios and communication, how to successfully camouflage ourselves and many navigation skills. Another activity that I had the opportunity to participate in was a water activity at Jervis Bay where we joined with some of battalion 23 and got to go in Navy Zodiacs and use metal detectors.

At the start of the camp we were split up into different sections which allowed us to meet many new people and make many new friends.

We all grew in teamwork skills and had a lot of fun in the process. It was a great experience and I hope that I will have the opportunity to attend it next year.
