A change again!

Bathurst LGA has now been placed in category 3 PLUS for the return to school. This has been updated in the last 36 hours! It is disappointing to advise you that we will now have to implement a ‘staggered return’ to school from the 18th October to comply.

Thank you for your understanding with these announcements, hopefully it all happens as outlined above.

This means: 1. Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 12 may return to class on Monday, 18th October 2. All children of ‘Essential Workers’ may continue to attend classes 3. World Sight Day Today is World Sight Day and this year the theme is ‘Love your Eyes”. This year especially, with an increase of online learning and screen time, awareness of eye health is vital.

There are many reasons to Love your eyes, and many ways eyesight can impact in the educational setting.

Good vision = Better education.

• 165 million children in the world have short sight.

• Glasses can reduce the odds of failing at class by 44% • Undetected vision problems during the early years of education can substantially impact overall behaviour and academic achievement.

• 1.1 billion people experience vision loss – that includes 91 million children - and an astounding 90% of that could be prevented.

• Addressing vision loss can increase productivity by the equivalent of over 22% a day, per week. The largest known increase from improvements to healthcare (how amazing are optometrists!)

5 You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.

6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

As we begin our journey through Psalm 139, you will notice that King David begins with the idea of being known. This is both comforting and confronting. None of us like it when we are overlooked, ignored or not listened to. We all deep down feel that we are unique and have something to offer.

David’s Psalm opens with the big idea that the Lord of all the universe is familiar with all your thoughts, words and actions.

God intimately knows you. And the suggestion here is that you will never be isolated and alone because your every thought and action is important to him.

This idea of being known is also confronting.

Those of us who spend time self-reflecting will realise that some of our thoughts, words and actions do not live up to our own expectations, let alone God’s. As I shared last week, David’s life is an illustration of this. And yet, the words of verse 5 should be of enormous comfort to us.

In knowing us, ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ aspects of our lives, God wants to ‘hem’ us to himself. In other words, God wants to attach us to His life – his purpose, perfection and eternal existence. Verse 5 confirms that we are truly accepted

by God as he ‘lays his hand upon me’ – the King of Kings has accepted us in a deep and personal way. On the surface, this seems like a good thing, but as we shall see next week, David’s natural reaction is to run away as he is too ashamed of who he has become.

This tug-of-war of emotions is reflected in all of us and yet, God knows, and still calls each one of us to himself. Amen

Cancellation!

Unfortunately, despite our very best efforts, we have had to cancel our delayed Book Week activities and Book Fair.

There are just too many things happening this term to be able to proceed, which is very disappointing.

Scholastic Book Club There will be one final Scholastic Book Club flyer distributed this year, so you may wish to take the opportunity to purchase from them, as we have had to cancel the Book Fair.

OSCAR IS OFF TO THE CON

Congratulations to Oscar Stocks who has been accepted into the Sydney Conservatorium of Music at the University of Sydney for 2022 on French Horn. Oscar began his musical journey as a trumpet player and transitioned into the orchestral world, now specialising on the Horn which he regularly practices 2-3hrs a day! He has been a highly valuable member of the College music program as a trumpeter, guitarist, vocalist, and horn player. Well done Oscar and we’ll see you in the Berlin Phil in 2030.

Author studies and STEM based literature activities will be the focus for library lessons in the Junior and Middle School this term.

THE MARSDEN CHAPEL The Chapel of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary was erected on the Marsden School site in 1928.

The dedication of the Chapel was performed by the Lord Bishop of Newcastle, The Right Reverend George Merrick Long, the founder and life governor of the school. Bishop Long was intimately connected with both Marsden and All Saints for many years and both schools had sporting houses named after him, Merrick House at Marsden and Long House at All Saints’.

‘The Chapel, with its red tiled roof and brown java wood walls surrounded by a group of young elm trees stands to the right of Rutherford House, which is the nucleus of the school buildings’.

‘Everyone was struck by the beauty of the interior with the simplicity of its white walls, dark beams and the perfect lines of the arching roof.’

1929 internal view of Marsden Chapel The chapel and its furnishings were built with generous contributions from the many people of Bathurst and surrounds. Today some of those gifts can be found in the All Saints’ Chapel and the Old Bathurstians’ Museum.

We are in search of the beautiful stained glass window which was consecrated in memory of Arnold Lomas Wylde in 1959. It was a coloured window of Christ blessing some little children in the market place, and every morning the Chapel was lit up by the bright morning sun shining through this window.

School life was centred around the chapel.

Daily services were held morning and evening and communion every Sunday of the term and special Church events were always celebrated during the school year.

In later years the daily services were not as frequent but the chapel remained the centre of school life for many who saw it as ‘A place of silence and peace’.

Senior School Sign-in /Sign-out Please note that the sign-in/sign-out book is no longer located in Mrs Jarrett’s office at Reception.

Students are to present to Mrs Norris in Mr Weeding’s office to sign-in and out of school.

In particular, if a student can’t make it to Period 1 by 8.55am, they must follow this procedure.

Students are required to have written permission to leave school early so please be sure to have your permission note if you need to leave during the day, or preferably an email that will have been sent by a parent/carer in advance.
