A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Last Friday members of the Senior School farewelled our Year 12 students.

Though structured around the current restrictions, it was nonetheless a moving tribute to a group of young women and men who worked hard through a most challenging year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

As I reflected upon their contribution to the College, I reminded everyone that above all else “when the history of Scots All Saints 2020 is written, the resilience, determination and agility of Year 12 2020, will feature brightly in an otherwise uncertain time”.

The incoming captains, Jonah Siede and Simi Alturi expressed the students’ deep appreciation and gratitude as follows: Simi Alturi: First and foremostly on behalf of the students at the College, we would like to thank Year 12 for everything you have contributed during your time at the College. As younger students, we have had the privilege of getting to know you as individuals whilst learning from the model of behavior and leadership that you have shown to us over time.

Your compassionate and enthusiastic approach to all aspects of College life has created a sense of belonging in a school that has existed for only two years, which is an immense accomplishment in its own right and is a testament to each of your characters as individuals. From a younger students perspective you were a representation of diligent leadership that our cohort and future leadership teams will draw inspiration from and emulate.

Jonah Siede: We have all benefited from your involvement and enthusiasm in debating, music and house carnivals, where you fostered the spirit of your sporting houses and furthered the competitive agenda of the students. The challenges you faced during your final year of student life showed the strength of your characters and your ability to persevere in times of difficulty. We thank you for displaying leadership and overcoming the difficulties of this year through your creative initiatives and fundraisers. continued page 2

Martin Luther King Junior once said “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” It is this lesson of persevering through tough times that you have shown to all students during your years at the College and it is something that we all highly value and will take with us into the future.

Good luck in your upcoming examinations, we are aware of the hard work you’ve put into your preparation and we wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

Thank you. ___ In reply, Captains Natalia Burgess and Harry Dickenson reflected as follows: Harry Dickenson Good Afternoon Mr Weeks, staff, students and my fellow graduating peers. To say the least, it feels strange being up here. Strange to stand here and address a hall full of familiar faces, something that hasn’t occurred since way back in April, when our year 12 cohort thought the HSC was an endless amount of days away. Strange to look back on what this year has been, whether that be a collection of monumental catastrophes due to a name that seems so familiar now, COVID-19, or a sequential string of breakthroughs and solutions to the restrictions we faced, bringing us closer together as a peer group and a wider community. Strange to fully take in that in a couple hours, we finish our last day of high school.

Amongst all this reflection, we can all except that this year has been one to remember. A memory to which the men and women before me will take into the next chapter of their lives and further into the big bad world. To say the very least, this year group has had a rollercoaster of a high school experience. Spending Year 11 conversing with different year group and Year 12 surviving through a literal pandemic. If this year group doesn’t know resilience, I really can’t see who would.

One amazing thing to come out of the past few years is the diversity of this group, that has been forged in the fires of stress and pressure, polished with blood, sweat and tears and put on display for the world to appreciate. From the academically gifted approaching 95 plus ATARs, to the creativity inclined who can finally step back and bask in the amazing works they have produced over the last 12 month. To the advanced athletes who see the future lit with stadium lights and a sea of adoring fans as they make a game winning line break. Even a group of incredible young lads, who I can see becoming a leading act in future music festivals. Through the troubles and hardships we have faced, the good become amazing and the amazing become legends.

But I guess we all own it to the great men and women of this school. The same men and women who pushed us to achieve our greatest, even if that meant the teacher became the student. They are the few that have seen the potential in each and everyone of us and made us aim higher. So on behalf the Year 12 of 2020, thank you. Thank you for the countless hours spent putting together unit summaries. Thank you for constantly reminding us to quit jamming and do some solid practise. Thank you for putting up with all our antics and lack of concentration in the later classes in the day. A special thank you to those who managed to keep us together during the hardest times of COVID, especially when we get a little too close to the camera during a zoom call.

Of course we can’t forget about the people that make a school, well a school. To the students. Thank you for all the support you have given us over the past year and beyond.

Even your seemingly smallest contributions make a big difference, whether that be co-operating during a house meeting, supporting us at a sporting event or joining in with the few fundraisers events we were able to hold. To the future school captains and leadership team, with the support of this crowd, you can achieve anything. On that note I would like to wish the future leaders the best of luck for the coming 12 months. I can see greatness coming out of your group.

Before I hand over to Natalia I would like to personally thank all of you for your support this year. It has been a privilege to serve as a College Captain and I wish the very best for all of you.

Natalia Burgess 2020 has been a time in our lives that we will never forget.

For the Year 12 cohort however, we had truly experienced what it was like to be thrown into the deep end.

I like to think of equating this year to that of a plane flight.

You all have been the passengers of flight SASC 2020, with Harry and I as the captains for the year, aiming for stability in times of turbulence. The staff at Scots All Saints have been our crew, guiding all of us with their expertise and reliability.

Whilst waiting in the departure lounge with your boarding card in hand, the nervousness and anticipation for the year-long flight before us spreads through the air. This feeling is only exacerbated by the roaring of the engines whilst finding your designated seat on board with instruction from our wonderful staff. Thinking about how the past year twelves had described their final year, we remember to take in every part of our future journey. We have heard that it’ll end just as soon as it had begun.

Flying high above the rest of the world can be quite overwhelming, but the patience and reassurance of the cabin crew ensure that the journey is going to be worthwhile. Unexpected circumstances may arise throughout the voyage, but here at SASC we are prepared for the unexpected. These could include having difficulty staying concentrated when we were separated from our friends, missing the school environment whilst online learning or unforeseen personal circumstances that could impact your study. And whilst we may cling to the familiar, so much changes once we board the plane.

We encounter new sights, make new friends and we begin to recognise our own talents and learn more about ourselves, or some of us just pass the time trying to keep ourselves busy. And, by the end of it, you realise that time truly does fly.

From Harry and myself, we cannot thank you all enough for your support throughout our time as College Captains. The beautiful grounds, the wonderful people and the support of the college community has made it especially difficult to say goodbye. We hope we have made you proud, and we hope that the Year 12 class of 2020’s legacy will continue to live on, even after we depart.

To Mr Weeks and Ms Leaf, thank you. We are fortunate to have been guided by someone as knowledgeable and dedicated as you.

All of our wonderful teachers – thank you as well. We would not have become who we are without your guidance and wisdom. It was a pleasure to get to know each and every one of you over the years.

To the current Year 11’s – your Year 12 experience will be unforgettable. It’ll happen in a blink, so soak in every moment. Before you know it, you will be in our position, farewelling what has become your second home after so many years.

And finally, to the departing Year 12’s – congratulations! We finally made it! Only a few more exams and then we move onto bigger and better things in the future. Good luck with all of your exams and remember that these little tests don’t define you as a person. Just try your best and believe in yourself. Learn from your mistakes because each of these teaches you how to be resilient and forces you into becoming who you have always meant to be. Go forth into the world with courage and conviction, work hard, be kind and compassionate and have faith in your abilities. The world is your oyster.

Years will pass, but we will always remember our school, our teachers and classmates. These memories will be bright, because the school years are glorious.

So, I guess it’s time to say goodbye. Not for forever, but for now. And always remember, that your dreams defy the laws of gravity. To quote Oh, The Places You’ll Go by Dr Suess, “Wherever you fly, you’ll be the best. Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.”

Finally, the College thanks Year 12 for their gift – five impressive “House” flags and poles which are now installed on the front driveway at the Senior School.

Representing the five new College Houses – Mawson, Cuthbert, Booth, Cowan, and Dunlop.

They symbolically support the new traditions the students are forging. A wonderful legacy!

Coffee and Prayer Mornings It has been so encouraging to have parents, staff and supporters join together to pray for our College Community on a regular basis.

In the quiet and relaxed atmosphere of the College Chapel, on the Junior/Middle School Campus, is where we meet for about 45 minutes – to pray for our young people, families, staff and supporters of our College.

Meet the new Head of Galloway House .....

What is your role at Scots All Saints?

I started at Scots All Saints this term as Head of Galloway House and as a Mathematics teacher.

Why did you join Scots All Saints?

I am delighted to be part of something new and exciting after the merger of Scots and All Saints just under two years ago. Being a rural, coeducational boarding school with a strong vision and values also attracted me to the school. To have the opportunity to move back into boarding which I have done at previous schools is something that I am looking forward to as it links strongly with my passion for student wellbeing.

What is the most rewarding part of your role as a Head of House?

The relationships you build with students and their families is one of the most rewarding aspects of working in boarding. I always think about the care and support I would want my children to have if they were a boarder. It is important to make sure that all students feel safe, valued and respected. It is rewarding to see the boarders flourish in terms of character, leadership and wellbeing and watching them gain valuable skills that prepare them for the next step in their lives.

What is the most challenging part of your role?

One of the most challenging parts of my role as Head of Galloway House and as a teacher and parent is the increased complexity in the needs of adolescents, including mental health issues and the impact of social media and technology. Having just started in my role here at Scots All Saints College it has been challenging starting at a new school, in a new town and being away from family (until they join me in 2021). I have taken my own advice for new boarders and have asked many questions, kept in contact with family and friends and made an attempt to meet as many staff as possible (although remembering all their names has been another challenge).

What advice would you give to new boarders joining the College?

move away from home into a boarding community. I would encourage them to be themselves and always ask questions as they go along. They need to get involved in the co-curricular aspects of the school and the boarding house. Decorate your room to make it feel more comfortable with photos and posters.

Keep in contact with family and old friends but make an effort to get to know the students in your year who you will be living with. A boarding community is supportive of each other as all students are in a similar situation living away from home.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I enjoy watching a number of sports – my favourite being netball. I would love to keep playing as the mind says ‘go for it’ but the body says ‘no’. I am a loyal Sydney Swans fan and enjoy attending their home matches when I get a chance. Spending quality time with my family and friends is particularly important.

Anything else to add?

Joining Scots All Saints College early in its development is exciting as the school is progressive and innovative in its decision-making.

I look forward to watching and contributing to the growth of the College as it moves forward into the future.

Student Wellbeing Mr Tom van Gend

their roles on a face-to-face basis when the Council meets officially for the first time in mid-November.

We look forward to supporting initiatives developed by the Youth Council to benefit our young people during the next twelve months.

Head of Student Wellbeing K-12

Congratulations to our Newly-Appointed Bathurst Regional Youth Councillors Bathurst Regional Youth Council is made up of 14 young people aged from 15 to 18 years. The Youth Council does things like plan fun events and activities, voice the opinions and concerns of young people to Council, and campaign on a range of health, wellbeing and safety issues. Being part of the Youth Council is an opportunity to learn new skills, make new friends, develop an understanding of Local Government, and gain a sense of pride in doing your part for the community.

Members of the Youth Council participate in special projects throughout the year. In previous years the Youth Council has organised initiatives such as music events, a colour run, dance parties, mental health campaigns, an Outdoor Cinema and practical skills workshops, just to name a few. Local community groups and organisations also like checking in with the Youth Council, and regularly attend meetings to hear their points of view.

Students from schools within the Bathurst Regional Council area submitted applications to be considered for positions on the 2021 Council. A short-list of applicants was then selected for interview by organisers. Applicants needed to demonstrate their commitment for the program, as well as exhibiting their communication and active participation skills and their ability to work effectively and productively with students from other schools and backgrounds.

Scots All Saints College is fortunate to have two successful applicants to represent us. We congratulate George Butler (Year 11) and Joseph O’Neill (Year 10) on their appointments to the 2020 – 2021 Bathurst Regional Youth Council.

George and Joseph completed their training day for the Council earlier this week, using an online interactive platform in order to maintain our College COVID-19 safety protocols. However, we are confident that they will be in a position to take up

Co-Curricular Prefects 2021 Our Co-Curricular prefects, Charlotte Russell and Robert Jeffries are both excited and motivated to help lead our students with co-curricular activities at the College. The pair have been eager to get ‘stuck into’ their roles and have some good ideas for 2021. Charlotte and Robert are looking forward to gathering feedback from the students so please capitalise on your opportunities to share your ideas with them.

Scots All Saints Swim Academy The SASC Swimming Academy programs have resumed for our Spring Season. We thank the students and parents for the support of the programs. The number of students learning to swim, learning to be life guards or swimming teachers and participating in our swimming squads is very pleasing.

Currently we have our High Intensity Performance Squad meeting on two mornings (with plans to go to 4 or 5). Our Challenge, Junior Dolphins and Junior Sharks Swimming Squads meet two afternoons per week. Our Learn2Swim program. Our current timetable is on the next page. There are a few spaces in our Learn2Swim program.

Meet our Swimming Academy Staff Sharon Inwood – Sharon is our Swimming Programs Co-ordinator.

Her expertise and skills with all things swimming is both amazing and extensive. Sharon is a Bronze Level Swim coach, an Australian Swim Teacher Association certified trainer and a Royal Life Australia qualified presenter/trainer. We are fortunate that with these qualifications and skills Sharon has been able to organize and train some of our Senior School students for qualifications in Lifeguarding and Teacher of Swimming which they can use to gain casual employment in the future. Sharon has been an important asset with the development of our Swimming Academy and pool complex and dhe also leads our Active Afternoon swim programs in the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools. We thank Sharon for her excellent work with the Swimming Academy and are blessed to have someone with such experience, passion and skills in swimming.

Olivia Warry – Olivia is one of our returning swimming teachers. A former student (2018), Olivia was a strong all round swimmer specializing in the longer events in her competitive days. She still enjoys her swimming and loves being able to share her knowledge and skills with her students. She has a quiet and friendly demeanour and quickly warms to people.

We welcome Olivia back and thank her for the great job that she does.

Pipes and Drums The Pipes and Drums program resumed this week with individual lessons and band practice. The COVID restrictions have resulted in some changes in our practices and opportunities to play but this has not stopped the band this term. The Band has several projects that they are working on including, recording a piece for the musical showcase, recording a video for an online Australasian Juvenile Band Championship and preparing for anticipated future school based events.

Australian Army Cadets There have been some developments with the Australian Army Cadets program in the past month, however, we are yet to receive notification from the army that we can resume normal parades.

The developments have been with the delivery of cadet content through electronic methods and the training of cadets through electronic means.

a SASC Swimming Club meeting on Friday Evenings TBA

This involved two Cadets completing a Corporals course in the first week of the holidays. It was the first time that the course had been offered and conducted by the Australian Army Cadets. It was an extensive training program which involved 6 days of scheduled Zoom conferences and meetings.

Our two Cadets, Alex and Xavier sat through up to 6 hours of video lessons over a 10-hour day. It was quite exhausting and involved many assignments.

We are pleased to announce that both Cadets passed the course.

The Army Cadets administration have announced another Corporals training course to be held in the next holiday period (early January). Any of our current cadets who are interested in being nominated for this course are asked to contact Mr Adams so that Captain Setright can commence the nomination process.

Active Afternoons Term 4 Active Afternoons have commenced with plenty of enthusiasm amongst our students. It is wonderful to see our ovals and fields dotted with students running and playing in such a joyful manner. To ensure the experience is as good as it can be, I encourage all students to take along their water bottle and hat each week.

Hockey Representation I would like to congratulate Lily Kable from Year 8, on her selection in the 2021 NSW U/15 hockey squad. Lily is a talented and sought after hockey player who has just completed a terrific season for Scots All Saints College. Lily is no stranger to representative hockey having represented NSW last year. Congratulations Lily on this exceptional selection and we are very happy to be in your cheer squad next year.

College Core Sports Registrations for Basketball, Touch Football and Cricket should now all be completed. We ask all parents to check game times in the ‘Weekly Sports schedule’ and to familiarize yourself with the COVID-19 safety plan for each sporting venue. The ‘Weekly Sports schedule’ link is on the last page of the The Roar. It is important that students representing the College in local competitions arrive in time for a purposeful warm-up and are wearing the complete Scots All Saints College sports uniform for that sport.

Swimming in Physical Education The All Saints Campus swimming pool is beginning to reach an acceptable and comfortable temperature. I encourage all students to get their Scots All Saints College swimwear ready (plain black or navy swimwear is also acceptable this season). Years 2-8 will be back in the pool in PE lessons from Week 5.

Year 12 Farewell Assembly

A special ceremony was held at Aikman Hall last Friday morning 16 October for our teachers, staff and senior students to farewell our Year 12 students. In a very challenging year, Captains Natalia Burgess and Harry Dickenson reflected on the resilience of the College to pull together and continue to provide supportive and motivational learning. Friendships made throughout their schooling were strengthened and they will always cherish the memories of their time here. As they now sit the Higher School Certificate (HSC) and move on to the next step of their lives as young men and women of purpose, we trust that their efforts and preparations will guide them to achieve their best.

Due to COVID-19, parents and family were unable to attend, however we wanted to share the ceremony with you through the video presentation below.

The World's Greatest Shave

On Thursday, 24 September, eight girls from Year 9 participated in The World’s Greatest Shave. The World’s Greatest Shave has the ultimate goal of raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. The students; Charlotte Bertwistle, Annabel Rennie, Beth Savage, Kitty Sharpham, Hannah Stanmore, Hannah Gill, Megan Cooke and April Phillpot, chose this cause after researching various cancer charities and decided to cut and shave their hair, knowing the enormous impact cancer has on countless Australians each year and that by donating their hair and raising funds, they are making a difference in somebody’s life. The girls set out at the beginning of August with a goal of $800, and in just over a month managed to raise nearly $6,500 which has been amazing.

Leukaemia is one of the top four most frequently diagnosed cancers and one of the leading causes of death by cancer in Australia.

funding for the world’s top cancer researchers getting one step closer to a cure every day.

Founded in 1998, the World’s Greatest Shave has raised over $200 million to help beat blood cancer and an estimated 37,500 kilograms of hair has been cut or shaved as part of the event. All hair donations that are of a sufficient length are turned into wigs for cancer affected patients enduring chemotherapy. Any hair too short to make the 20cm line is made into ocean booms, helping to soak up oil spills in the ocean.

If you would like to donate to this amazing cause and help support the girls as their hair grows back, donations are still open for the team for a few more weeks on the World’s Greatest Shave website under the team name 'Snip Snip'.

On behalf of the girls involved, I would like to thank everyone who has supported us on this crazy journey, we have been overwhelmed by your support and we could not be happier with our new looks!

Success for our riders at at Equestrian competition It was fabulous to have our equestrian students out and about competing again last weekend with competitions starting up again. Congratulations to Megan Redpath and Mia Baggett who competed in eventing at Equestriad in Camden last weekend both in the 1* (105cm) class and to Madison Ford who competed at Tubbul Campdraft in the Juvenile section. Here is a short report from Megan about their success…

Last weekend my horse Doreen and I competed in one of the first events back from COVID-19 called Equestriad. Doreen and I competed in the CCN 1* (1.05m height jumps) eventing class. This type of event includes 3 components, Dressage, Show-jumping and Cross-Country. After dressage, we were placed 8th, then we completed a clear round in the show-jumping, followed by a double clear round in the cross-country, allowing us to finish on our dressage score of 36 penalties. This placed us 2nd overall in a competitive class of 21 riders of all ages and the highest placed junior in the class.

Madison Ford also competed at Tubbul Campdraft at Bribbaree. There were thirty two contestants in the juvenile campdraft. The Brahman cattle from Queensland were fast and tough. Madison Ford and her family's stock horse Matilda won the juvenile with a convincing 87 point run which is an amazing achievement.

Our equestrian students have been busy training during the last few terms and staying Covid safe. I would like to commend each and every one of them for their commitment and passion to their sport!

COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe Dear Parents and Carers, What a wonderful start to Term 4. It’s been so lovely to see our staff and students participating in the activities that they missed so much earlier in the year.

Many of you will have seen a report in The Western Advocate about a NSW Health COVID-19 alert for the Bathurst region after remnants of the coronavirus were detected in raw sewage yesterday.

As you may appreciate, situations like this require detailed investigation from Health Authorities before they can issue specific information and advice. We will keep you up to date as we receive information from the local Public Health Unit but for now I encourage everyone to be vigilant but not to panic. As always, if you have even the slightest of symptoms you need to be tested for COVID-19 and to self-isolate until you receive a negative result. Social distancing, hand and respiratory hygiene continue to be incredibly important also. I also encourage you to monitor the NSW Health website for information and updates.

At the time of publication there are no changes being made to the handling of COVID-19 at Scots All Saints and we continue to follow our existing protocols and procedures. Rest assured though that we are carefully monitoring the situation. We are ready to make changes, to do whatever is necessary to protect the College Community and will not hesitate to act on the advice of the experts.
