A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks
Welcome back to all students to the final term of the school year. Understandably, 2020 will be remembered one of the most unpredictable years of all time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As I write, it is a relief to know things are improving. The good news is that restrictions are being eased and in this edition of The Roar you will find our COVID-19 update. You will see that a range of programs are recommencing, including school camps, and that Year 12 students can have graduation assemblies and graduation formals. That said, there is still a long way to go and we all need to remain vigilant in protecting our health and the health of those around us. The Innovation Centre There are some exciting developments happening across the campuses. Work is due to start on the building of the Innovation Centre on the Junior and Middle School campus next week. Separate advice concerning our operations while this project is being built will be regularly communicated. Please remain alert if you visit the campus. The goal is to complete the main building for early Term 1, 2021. Agriculture Research and Development Centre Preparation works have begun for the establishment of the Agriculture Centre at the Senior School. If you are visiting this campus, be aware that the works are taking place in the main carpark area. Separate advice will be provided as this project develops. The main work is planned for late December – early January 2021. continued page 2

2021 Staff Matters The College is investing in ongoing professional development for our staff with the establishment of the Professional Research and Development Institute. This will be a centre of excellence which supports our staff to continually extend their own skills and knowledge as practitioners. Ms Tracey Leaf has been appointed Deputy Head – Professional Development, to manage and coordinate this vital activity for the staff. Appointment of Deputy Head of College and Head of Senior School This will be a new appointment for 2021. The position was recently advertised and interviews will be conducted shortly. Appointment of College Chaplain Following a year without a College Chaplain, the College is hoping to fill this position from the start of
2021. Advertising is currently underway for this position. Congratulations Our enthusiastic Careers Advisor, Mrs Helen Jones, has been recognised as a finalist in the Australian Careers Association's, Careers Advisor of the Year. Awards. Mrs Jones was awarded her nomination in front of several students this week and we wish her the best of luck when the final awards are announced later this month. Despite the many challenges 2020 has thrown at us, 2021 promises great progress for the College with significant benefits to all our students. In the meantime, it’s ‘heads down’ as we move into the term. Good luck to our wonderful Year 12s as they start the HSC next week. You have been awesome!
French News
Jacques et les haricots magiques At the end of last term, Year 2 were introduced to the topic of “Dans le Jardin”(in the garden). As part of this unit we have been looking at the fable “Jacques et les haricots Magiques” (Jack and the magic beanstalk) and adopting techniques for memorising French words and phrases. Not only was there a focus on correct pronunciation and intonation in French, students were also encouraged to converse using related vocabulary, whilst creating their own magic beanstalks. Welcome Back Everyone was looking a little taller and a little fresher as we welcomed one another back to the final term of 2020. Our Junior School teachers have been busy preparing many exciting and engaging units of work and I’m sure the students will be ready to learn and immerse themselves in the new content. Term Overviews will be distributed next week. Kindergarten rooms Our Kindergarten students have changed classrooms during the holidays while our rooms are refurbished for our 2021 classes. Mrs White and her class are enjoying a freshly painted vibrant new room with a brand new Promethean interactive screen. The giant new screen has lots of fun and interactive functions for Mrs White and the students to use to assist them in their learning. Both Kinder rooms will also be fitted with contemporary classroom furniture during the summer break. Book Week Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our Book Week celebrations will look a little different this year. Next Wednesday 21 October (Term 4, Week 2), we invite students to dress as their favourite book character or as a curious creature, as the Book Week theme this year is 'Curious Creatures, Wild Minds'. Stage 2 Camp Our Stage 2 camp to Taronga Western Plains Zoo and the Burrendong Sport and Recreation Facility is scheduled for the 19 and 20 November. At this stage it is our intention that the camp will go ahead. NSW Health are now allowing overnight activities like camps to take place provided organisers develop and implement a COVID 19 Safety Plan. The COVID-19 situation can change quickly so we will continue to monitor the situation and make a decision in the best interests of the students. Hats and Hay fever The warmer weather of Term 4 means it’s time to start wearing our hats again. All students should now

be wearing their school hat to protects their face, neck and ears when outside for playing and sport. It’s also a good idea to apply sunscreen before arriving at school, before recess, lunch and going outside. The warmer weather also means many of our students are suffering from hay fever. If your child suffers from hay fever at this time of year could please ensure that they receive their necessary medication before coming to school. New Students This week we welcomed two new students to our Year 2 classes; Lucy Banner and Joshua Murray. Rebooting post COVID-19 There are number of events and routines we plan on reintroducing this term but we will still adhere to the Department of Health and the Department of Education Covid-19 guidelines. Speech and Drama classes, music lessons with external music tutors and Highland Dancing lessons will recommence this term. Please note parents and visitors are not allowed past the front office unless they are delivering or picking children up from Pre-Kindergarten or After School Care. Spotlight on History in the Junior School In Term 4, all Junior School students will continue their learning in History. Kindergarten students will learn about stories from a range of cultures including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and family members from other parts of the world. As participants in their own history, students build on their knowledge and understanding of how the past is different from the present. Students in Stage 1 will be travelling through time to explore the dramatic changes that have occurred to the technology behind transport around the world. Students will examine the purpose behind the changes in technology and will complete a case study on the changes that have occurred to aeronautical travel. Students will examine the changes to different modes of transport in order to describe the effects of changing technology on people’s lives over time. Stage 2 students will explore stories of the First Fleet, including their experiences following arrival. They will identify reasons for the voyage of the First Fleet and explain why various groups were passengers. They will use a range of sources to investigate the everyday life of ONE of the following who sailed on the First Fleet and lived in the early colony: a soldier, convict, ex-convict, official. Students will also describe the nature of contact between Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples and others, including Aboriginal resistance at the time of settlement.

Rebooting post COVID-19
Welcome Back It was great to see all of the students back to school this week after their well-earned holiday. This term is only 8 and a half weeks so it will go very quickly. I encourage all of the children to make the most of their learning opportunities and to enjoy the challenges that school has to offer. During the holidays a great deal of maintenance and building works were completed on the campus. The Kemmis Building had air conditioning installed which will make it much more comfortable for hosting assemblies, chapel services and parent information nights.

Welcome to Term 4 On Tuesday it was lovely to see the students arriving back on campus. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the new students across Years 9-11 who have joined us on the Scots Campus this term. New Staff Mrs Kimberley Jones joins us this term as Head of Galloway House and will also be teaching Math in the Senior School. Mrs Liz Casey has returned from maternity leave and will be teaching across the Science, PE, HSIE and English faculties. Welcome to both these teachers. Summer Uniform Students now need to be wearing their summer uniform, which includes the formal College hat. Please assist by ensuring your child has the formal hat and is wearing it to and from school during Term 4 and Term 1 (2021). This is the final term that students can wear Scots or All Saints school uniform. All students need to be in the SASC uniform at the start of Term 1 2021. HSC Examinations The HSC Examinations commence Tuesday 20 October. We wish our Year 12 students all the best with their final examinations. State Finalist in the NSW Careers Adviser of the Year Award Scots All Saints is more fortunate than most schools to have a full-time, experienced and passionate Careers Adviser, Ms Helen Jones who goes above and beyond to guide students to achieve their goals. On Tuesday, Head of College Mr John Weeks, staff and students on Scots Campus announced this achievement and recognised Helen's outstanding efforts in careers counselling and exploring postschool options for our students. From the P&F Mr Grant Baker P&F President
The 2021 Committee needs you The next meeting of the Association is on Wednesday 21 October (Term 4 Week 2), and will be the Annual General Meeting. As I mentioned in my last column, in accordance with the Association’s Constitution we must: • Elect members of the Executive and Committee, • Adopt the statement of accounts, • Appoint a reviewer for our accounts, • Consider any alterations of the Association Constitution. The Association is to have an Executive consisting of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary, and a Committee of between 5 and 7 members. 2020 has been an extremely unusual year for all of us, and it has been such a shame considering the fantastic start we had with the welcome evening under the stars. With a new Committee to be determined at the upcoming AGM, I remain optimistic that the Association will be able to undertake some events in 2021, most likely with some form of restrictions. I would urge people to seriously consider getting involved being part of the Association, the Executive or Committee, as it is extremely rewarding. I have sadly advised the existing Committee, Head of College and College Council that I will not be nominating for the position of President for 2021, as I take up further professional responsibilities in November. Despite the challenges in 2020 I have found it highly rewarding a great way of meeting people, offering support, and being part of the College. I remain supportive of the College and Association and look forward to people nominating for a role on the next Executive or Committee. It is a great way of giving back to the College, and investing in its future.

Careers Advice Mrs Helen Jones Career Development Officer
HSC and the ATAR - ATAR is a rank, not a mark. Timely information with the HSC around the corner. The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a number between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates a student’s position relative to all the students in their age group (ie all 16 to 20 year olds in NSW). So, an ATAR of 80.00 means that you are 20 per cent from the top of your age group (not your Year 12 group). Universities use the ATAR to help them select students for their courses and admission to most tertiary courses is based on your selection rank (your ATAR + any applicable adjustments). RSA/RCG – Verto Course for YR 12 students VERTO will be running their Post HSC Practical Skills for Work program again in 2020. This is a five day accredited program that gives students who have just completed their HSC the essential skills to get a start in the workforce and hit the ground running, standing out from other job applicants. Students receive a Statement of Attainment on successful completion of the units of competency. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students, especially during these difficult Covid-19 times.

If you would like to enrol please: Collect an enrolment from from Mrs Jones and fill it out. Complete the information sheet indicating preferred dates. Submit the enrolment and information sheet directly to Verto (via email) along with a copy of photo ID or birth certificate, Medicare Card or Centrelink evidence (if applicable) as soon as possible. Most Year 12 students are fully subsidised by the NSW Government ACE Community Service Obligation program to complete this program. If there is going to be a cost VERTO will call to discuss It’s a first in first served enrolment process so students need to get their forms back asap by scanning and emailing to courses@verto.org.au If a student is younger than 18 years, they will need to ask their parent or guardian to sign the forms. Students will also be required to bring ID with them to some of the training days. For those selecting First Aid courses, students will need to collect a workbook from their local VERTO Office and answer questions to submit on the day of training. Scholarship opened many doors for Natalia Scots All Saints College Captain, Natalia Burgess received a Scots All Saints Academic scholarship from Year 7 which contributed towards tuition fees throughout her time at the College. Natalia recognises her dedication and commitment to achieving her best has opened many doors for her. Now in the final formal week of school before HSC exams begin, we caught up with Natalia who reflects on her education with great nostalgia and pride. Performing Arts Academy News With great excitement, the Music Centre at the All Saints Campus is again full of music making and joy. Our students have returned to a new term with the ability to play, compose and work together in the Performing Arts Academy. We welcomed back our talented string tutors and students to the Junior School Strings Program this week. Everyone loved playing again as we prepared to film for the 2020 Digital Showcase. It is a special part of the College that our Junior School students are able to play in a symphony orchestra learning to balance their volume, improve their intonation and stretch their brains in a big team. They are very excited to share their rendition of ‘Count On Me’ at Showcase. Here are some photos of our string tutors Doreen, Nic, Zari, Georgia, Lisa and Stefan … taken by Gem Clipsham Photography. These staff are renowned players and it is a privilege to work alongside them and watch them inspire our students! Next week, Year 12 Music 1 and 2 students will sit the written components of their HSC course and we wish them the best. Late last term the two HSC Music classes performed over 50 pieces of music across two days for external markers. We were so proud of their skill, composure and capacity to achieve in such a year we have had! We also welcome the new Year 12 (2021)

Innovation Centre construction begins next week In some very exciting news, construction will start on our new Innovation STEM Centre on Monday 19 October. Design was completed in August, followed by a tender process where 3 local construction companies participated. Scots All Saints College is pleased to announce local construction firm, Hines Construction as the successful tenders for the project. There will be some temporary fencing installed near the Science Labs to ensure the safety of the students and staff on All Saints Campus. Access to Watson Oval will be changed to minimise pedestrian and vehicle interactions and provisions have been made so that there will be no ‘noisy’ work during the exam period in November. The Innovation STEM Centre will bring world’s best practice in education to regional NSW, enabling our students to work collaboratively and develop knowledge combining skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to find solutions to overcome real-life issues. Research shows the new basic skills needed by young people to engage in a complex world and navigate the challenges they will inherit are problem-solving, communication skills, digital learning, teamwork, critical thinking, creativity and
financial literacy. We are pleased that our students will soon have a dedicated cutting-edge Innovation Centre to build these strengths. The project is being delivered as a result of generous funding from Federal Government’s independent school grants program of $700,000 and a further $750,000 from the College Foundation announced last year by President, Mr Bruce Clydsdale. The Innovation Centre is planned to be completed on 31 March 2021 and ready for students in Term 2 2021. It will be great watch the new Innovation Centre take shape. We will keep you updated with the progress.
World Teachers' Day Scots All Saints College is joining World Teachers' Day on 30 October to celebrate all of our hardworking and dedicated teachers from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12. 2020 has been a year like no other with teachers having to adjust their teaching practices in response to the outbreak of COVID-19. We would like parents and students to join us in celebrating all of our wonderful teachers at Scots All Saints. There are lots of ways you can show appreciation and support. One simple way may be for your child to write a simple thank you card to their teacher – download some templates here. This year’s celebrations are student/staff only events due to COVID restrictions. The theme for this year is Curious Creatures, Wild Minds! All students in the Junior and Middle Schools are invited to dress as their favourite book character or as a curious creature on the day their classes are involved in our special Book Week activities. COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe Dear Parents and Carers, It is with great pleasure that we inform you of a number of changes to our protocols for managing COVID-19 within the College. An easing of restrictions by the NSW Government, along with lower community transmission throughout NSW means that we can resume some of the activities that were previously postponed. Whilst this is great news, we still have to proceed with caution, especially with regards to our Year 12 students who begin their HSC exams next week. Our priority is to ensure we do everything possible so that we minimise any activity that could disrupt their exams. To this end, the COVID-19 Management Committee met during the school holidays and has resolved there will be an easing of restrictions across the entire College but until the end of the HSC exams, there will be a slight difference between the activities that occur at the All Saints and Lithgow Campuses and what happens on the Scots Campus. Our Year 12 students have worked incredibly hard and through incredibly difficult circumstances this year and we know that our community on the Scots Campus will happily ‘hang-in’ for just a little bit longer to help protect our HSC students from illness and unnecessary stress during their exams. COVID-19 Health and Safety Protocols The Scots All Saints College COVID-19 Health and Safety Protocols for staff and students have now been updated to ensure that they reflect the latest NSW Government advice. Progressive return to Music and Performing Arts activities We are pleased to advise, in most circumstances, external teachers are now permitted to resume their on-campus teaching. These programmes and lessons will initially begin on the All Saints Campus with a view to extending to the Scots Campus after the completion of the HSC exams. Director of the Performing Arts Academy, Jon Clipsham and his team of dedicated music teachers have been working hard to get their programmes up and running again and to ensure that lessons comply with COVID Safe protocols. Likewise, the providers of activities such as Speech and Drama and Highland Dancing are also prepared to reintroduce their lessons in line with the current guidelines. Camps and excursions We plan on re-introducing some of our excursions and camps if possible. We request your patience while we finalise these arrangements. A great deal of preparation goes into camps and excursions and we need to carefully review our camp/ excursion providers, COVID-19 risk management strategies and ensure they align with our own College protocols prior to committing our students to attend these venues. P and F Meetings The planned P and F meetings for Week 2 (AGM and General Meeting) and Week 7 (General Meeting) will proceed online via Zoom. Everyone is welcome. If you are interested in becoming involved or attending, please email: secreatry.sascpfa@ outlook.com for log in details. 2021 Orientation Days and end of Year celebrations We are working through preparations for our end of year celebrations and the 2021 Orientation Day program scheduled from mid-November for Pre-Kindergarten, followed by Kindergarten to Year 12 scheduled for 23 November. We aim to ensure that these events are as enjoyable as possible whilst still appropriate from a COVID Safe perspective. We look forward to providing you updates on how these celebrations will occur as we finalise the details. Year 12 Assemblies and Farewells Year 12 students and families have been advised separately of the arrangements for these events. In line with the Health Department guidelines these will occur once the HSC has finished from 12 November.
