We have all enjoyed a smooth and productive start to the new school year and there is a positive buzz about the Campuses.

Our thanks to all parents and guardians for the wonderful way you have prepared your sons and daughters for the new year - they have “hit the ground running”.

The staff and I have been carefully planning for the 2020 year and many of the key events are listed in the calendar and in student diaries.

As plans develop further or change, we will update you through The Roar and also immediately via our communication channels including the College Facebook page, website and emails directly to your inbox. If you are ever in doubt, please email or phone the appropriate staff member for clarification.

I have noted just a few of the important events and works which are happening at the moment in the sections below. As you will read, there is a lot of great work happening and we will keep you informed about these and other activities as they emerge.

Importantly, the first meeting of the P&F will be held on 12 February, as detailed below. The Senior staff and I are looking forward to sharing with you many of the plans for the students and the school in the months ahead.

Finally, in relation to the Coronavirus outbreak, the College has taken all precautions as advised by NSW Heath.

Our students who have been affected continue to be in isolation in different locations and will be admitted to school once they have completed 14 days in quarantine. Given they returned to Australia at different times, they will begin returning to school at different times over the next few weeks. I can report that all are extremely well and healthy, are regularly monitored and as you would expect keen to return to a normal lifestyle.

That is why the Strong Central West 2020 Conference is asking members of the Central West community to put forward their own unique case study to feature in the conference program. Your case study can be from an individual or family, local school, workplace, senior citizen, or any community member or government agency. The No. 1 priority of this conference is to address local issues and discover how we can continue to create a thriving Central West across all facets of work and life.

From the P&F Mr Grant Baker P&F President

Well, can you believe it? It’s 2020 and my first column in The Roar for the year.

Before I talk about what is happening in the P&F world, I wanted to reflect on what has unfolded across our State and country over the holiday period.

Many of our families continue to be impacted by the unrelenting drought, and to add to this, others have been impacted or watched on in horror at the bushfire crisis. I remain amazed at how we as humans, despite these disasters, are so resilient, and continue to press on and stay strong.

I urge you to keep your friends and family close, and reach out to someone, if and when things are getting too much.

We as parents, also need support to ensure we can then provide support to our children.

Parent Welcome – Parents Party Under the Stars As you would have seen in College communications, a new event is being held on Saturday, 29 February on Scots Campus to enable parents with children from Pre-K to Year 12 and from all campuses to come together and enjoy an evening of drinks and canapés.

A working group of College staff and P&F members have started to prepare for this event, and I have been delighted to hear of their progress to date.

To be held on the Karralee Lawn, which is a very pleasant spot on a balmy February evening, I look forward to welcoming new parents, and catching up with old friends at this inaugural event that is intended to help in our efforts in 2020 of “friend raising” across our College.

In such a busy foundation year, and with big changes like the announcement of the new Innovation Centre, it is regrettable that plans have been delayed or changed, but we continue to make progress on helping support the College in offering our children the best opportunities and facilities possible.

I can now report that additional outdoor seating has been ordered for the Scots Campus, which will provide Senior students with more seating and picnic tables for use during their day.

With the College progressing work on its Master Plan, we also look forward to helping support new playground facilities in the Middle School, which we have secured funding for. With the exciting development of the Innovation Centre this funding has been deferred.

The H J Richardson Library (ASC campus), caters for students in the Junior and Middle Schools with every class having a formal library lesson each week. These lessons cover areas such as literature, topic related research and information skills and digital citizenship. The students are actively encouraged to borrow from our extensive fiction and non-fiction collections. Our Year 7 and 8 students have a timetabled reading lesson each cycle where they are introduced to a wide range of both new and classic titles.

Rural Fire Service Cadets (RFS)

Strength and Conditioning We are excited to announce the launch of a dedicated strength and conditioning coach and program to the College in 2020. The program will be led by Luke Newman (B. Exercise and Sport Science and Personal Trainer) and based on the Senior Campus (Hunter Sports Centre). The program aims to provide students with the opportunity to improve their sporting performances through development of individual strength, flexibility and general fitness. Students will initially be assessed using a variety of fitness tests so to identify training goals and to monitor their progress.

Sessions will be timetabled to a weekly schedule and the type of session being offered will depend on the number of students in the group. Initially the program timetable will be as follows. This timetable could change as it is dependent on the number of students involved.

Monday Morning 6.30 – 8.00am

Whilst students will be able to do as many sessions as they like each week; it will be dependent on the availability of places available in each session (20 students max per group sessions). We therefore may need to offer students places in sessions based on the student’s preference for sessions. Registrations for students in Years 9 -12 closed on Wednesday and the students will be notified by email as to which sessions they can join. We will start on Monday 10 February.

Our RFS Cadets program started on Monday this week and will continue on Mondays 5:00 pm – 6:45 pm for the rest of the term. All students in Years 9 – 12 are eligible and invited to join in the training. A registration forms is required – see Mr Adams Army Cadets Our SASC Army Cadets is open to all students in Years 9 to 12. It is a voluntary program held on Wednesdays 3:30 pm – 4:45 pm in Terms 1 and 4 starting 12 Feb and every second Wednesday in Terms 2/3. The Army Cadets program gives opportunities for our students to develop excellent leadership skills, develop personal skills in outdoor setting and can be a lot of fun. The program also provides opportunities for our Cadets to attend Army Cadet camps (free when run by the Army – e.g AFX), internal bivouacs and Army run leadership camps later in the year.

Swimming Squads Our swimming squads have resumed. There are opportunities for students to join a squad or to get swimming lessons. We will be looking to extend our swimming program into the winter so stay tuned for details.

Pipes and Drums Our Pipes and Drums band have resumed for the year. We are also excited that our drum tutor Millaine Longmore has an extra day a week to help prepare our drummers. Highland Dancing Our Highland Dancing program for the Middle School and Senior School is resuming for the year. The Highland Dance teacher for students beyond Year 5 is Mrs Kim Durie. The classes will be held on Thursday afternoons and are separated into a Year 5 to Year 8 class or a Year 7 to Year 12 class. The Year 5 to Year 8 class will be held on the All Saints Campus from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm and the Year 7 to Year 12 class will be held on the Scots Campus from 5:15 pm to 6:15 pm.

As there is a clash with sport training for Year 7 and 8 students at the 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm timeslot – girls who are selected into an ‘A Level’ sport team may be required to go to both sport training sessions – thus

will need to attend the Scots campus Highland Dancing class. Whereas girls who may not prioritize being in an ‘A Level’ sport team will be excused from the Thursday training session so that they can learn to Highland Dance. (durie.k@bigpond.com) As you can see, there are plenty of opportunities for our students with co-curricular activities as well as opportunities with musicals, or extensive music programs, including tech crews, etc. offered by our Performing Arts Academy. We encourage students to get involved and take up the opportunities extended to them as they come up throughout the year.

NZ Cricket Tour a huge success for SASC team On Saturday 18 January 2020, Scots All Saints College touring cricket team departed from Sydney Airport on route to Queenstown, New Zealand.

The SASC team competed in the Queenstown Schools Cricket Carnival against seven NZ schools from the South Island.

Commencing on Monday 20 January and concluding on Thursday 23 January, the carnival was a huge success for the SASC team, winning five out of six matches. Amongst four long days of cricket, we were able to fit in plenty of tourist activities filled with fun and laughter. The Shotover Jet was the highlight of the tour for many and was an incredible rush of adrenaline.

The 130m Zipride in an incredibly picturesque location was a highlight, as well as watching strangers bungy jumping from a bridge. After the completion of the carnival, we took a ride up the Gondola and were presented with breathtaking views of the spectacular Lake Wakatipu. The luge was a very enjoyable, but competitive activity which involved plenty of overtaking and numerous collisions. On our final evening in New Zealand, we all went swimming in the freezing 8-degree water to conclude a wonderful tour.

Overall, it was an incredible tour and we all enjoyed it very much. We would like to thank Mr Adams and Mr Cant for their support and organisation prior to and throughout the tour. The whole team is very grateful for your efforts, as we would not have had a tour without you. We would also like to thank everyone who supported the tour by purchasing any number of Zooper Doopers. Dates to Remember: The sporting year has started smoothly with competitions commencing on the first weekend of the term. Our sporting teams performed admirably during Term 4, 2019 which has seen a number of them placed in a position where they may have the opportunity to play in the semi-finals of their respective competitions.

Senior School Swimming Carnival

The Friday evening Basketball Competition was cancelled due to the extreme temperature conditions we were experiencing. The predicted temperatures within the Stadium led to the decision to cancel games.

Tuesday March 3, Castle Hill

ISA Cricket, Tennis and Touch Football games were played last weekend. The weather conditions for these fixtures were closely monitored between the staff of the respective schools competing on the day which ensured the students welfare was managed professionally.

With these current weather conditions the College community have been informed of the need to keep hydrated and wear the appropriate hats for the sports and activities they are involved with. This extends to PE lessons, recess and lunch breaks.

Western Associated Schools (WAS) Basketball trials were conducted this week at the Bathurst Basketball Stadium. Scots All Saints College hosted the trials at the stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Three schools attended the trials – Kinross Wolaroi School, Orange Anglican Grammar School and Scots All Saints College.

The trials enable the WAS association to select a Senior Girls and Boys squad of players to represent their schools at the AICES Basketball Championships.
