A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Thank you mums, dads and guardians for preparing your children for the start of a new school year. We appreciate all the preparation which goes into making our children 'school ready'. From Preparatory School to Year 12 it has been a delight to welcome our existing students back to be joined by 230 new members of the College. We look forward to getting to know all our new students well and trust they settle in quickly and feel very much part of the Scots All Saints Community.

This week all students have received their timetables and have met their new teachers. If there is any confusion or concerns around the requirements, please contact the relevant teachers or secretarial staff.

Please don’t be concerned about any matter. If you need further information just contact our helpful staff. We want all students to start really well.

There are lots of exciting activities and opportunities planned for the year ahead and we look forward to sharing these in future editions of The Roar. At the moment we are hopeful of a full sports and co-curricular program operating as normal. Of course, all such activities will be dependent on the advice of NSW Health as our communities continue to manage the coronavirus pandemic successfully.

Staff Announcement

After successfully establishing Scots All Saints College as the leading provider of academic excellence in the Bathurst region over the last two and half years, our Director of Community Engagement and Marketing, Mel Monico will not be returning in 2021.

2021 CALENDARS will be sent home in school bags next week. Please watch out for them.

During this time, Scots All Saints College has experienced strong enrolment growth in both day and boarding students and is well placed to continue to build on the strong foundation created. Since joining the College, Mel has worked tirelessly utilising her expertise and background in communications, journalism and public relations in forming relationships with parents and key external stakeholders, along with playing a pivotal role building the profile of Scots All Saints College in the local community and across regional New South Wales.

On behalf of Scots All Saints College, we wish Mel all the best for the future as she continues to pursue her passion of developing and promoting successful organisations in the region.

Fortunately we will continue to see Mel around the College as part of the parent community.

Performing Arts Academy News

Great news! Music ensembles resume in week 2 and the ensemble directors and tutors have selected some engaging and complex repertoire. We will continue to follow COVID-19 guidelines for instruments and vocal ensembles. Active Afternoons Students will commence Active Afternoons in Week 1.

Basketball games will recommence this Friday for our Year 8 team and next Wednesday for our Junior teams. Cricket matches will recommence this Saturday and Touch Football matches next Monday. There have been some minor changes with coaches and training arrangements for some teams.

Swimming Heats The following swimming heats will take place over the next week. All students are required to bring in their Scots All Saints swimmers or a plain black or navy pair of swimmers, towel and goggles (optional).

Pre-run swimming finals The following events will take place prior to the swimming carnival. These events are straight finals and will not be swum again at the swimming carnival. Students swimming in these events should feel confident to swim these distances. These events are optional.

All students will swim in a freestyle event during the swimming heats session and have the opportunity at this time to enter in the breaststroke, backstroke and/ or butterfly events for the swimming carnival. To be clear, there be will be no swimming heats for breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly this year, students will pre-elect if they would like to swim in those events at the swimming carnival.

Swimming Carnival There is a change of format for the swimming carnival this year. Junior School (K-4) will have their swimming carnival on Friday 19 February, commencing at 9:00 am. The Middle School (5-8) will have their carnival on Friday 19 February commencing at 11:30 am. Both Junior and Middle School carnivals will be held in the Campus West pool. The school has purchased the Dolphin wireless timing system which is fully integrated with the Meet Management software. This system will synchronise all stopwatches to the same start signal which will improve accuracy compared to manual stopwatches.

United Nations Youth Australia Young Diplomats Tour Explore the world of diplomacy This May, UN Youth will welcome 25 young leaders from across Australia on a three-weekend online international activity to explore the complex realities of diplomacy in the 21st Century.

During this activity, you’ll meet and engage with the key players in international diplomacy – from UN representatives, European Politicians, diplomats, embassies, leading thinkers, to NGOs and grassroots organisations. You’ll visit breathtaking historical sites, and immerse yourself in everything Europe has to offer.

The tour will explore the history that has played such an important role in shaping contemporary European and international politics. We’ll chart the political movements that have empowered or oppressed populations around the globe, and understand the history of revolution and war. We’ll also take an in-depth look at some of the most important ideas and forces shaping today’s international community – including the role of the UN, the rise of radical politics throughout Europe, and Russia’s reignited confrontation with the Western world.

If you’re in Years 10-12, join us as we explore the places, people and forces that have shaped the world as we know it. Starting from scratch, we’ll chart the birth of modern democracy, the rise of the nation-state and the evolution of diplomacy to the current day. From the French Revolution to the fall of the Berlin Wall, we’ll explore the big moments, ideas and challenges that our world leaders have grappled with over the past 400 years.

News from the Archives If you would like to see what has been happening with the All Saints’ College and Marsden Archives you are most welcome.

We would love to have your help with naming and dating some of the photographs we have here especially during the 1960’s,1970’s and 1980’s as many of the photos taken during that time have not been identified with names or dates.

If you think you may be able to help please come in and see us! Also have a look at the OBU Museum which is the work of our curator Tim Sargeant who has been working tirelessly on creating a historical record of the school as well as setting up a Portrait room and a Bean history room.

This work is still ongoing and we are very lucky to have Tim giving so much of his time, expertise and property to this museum- without which we would not have such a wonderful exhibit of the school’s history.

The Museum is in Esrom House next to Reception on the All Saints’ College Campus.

After School Care 2021

This year we continue to offer quality After School Care to students of Kindergarten to Year 6 from 3:15 to 6:00 pm on school days.

The exciting news is that After School Care will operate from a classroom in our new Preparatory School which will make pick up easy. Until we have finalized the building project in that room After School Care will operate out of the same venue as it did last year (the green fenced area below the library).

Please indicate in your child’s Student Diary if you wish for your child to attend After School Care on that day.

After School Care incurs a $10 charge per student or $15 per family per day.

Preparatory School (Pre-K) students will be supervised by Preparatory School staff until 5:00 pm. If Prep students stay after 5:00 pm they will be signed in to After School Care and a charge of $10 will be incurred.

Q3. Schools are planning to present musicals from the end of Term 1 onwards. A COVID-19 Safe Plan will be in place. Given the current NSW Health advice re singing and the fact that there will be large numbers of students singing, will these activities be able to proceed?

A3. Schools can plan for events to be held on school grounds or at external venues.

Schools must have COVID-19 Safety Plan when planning and conducting these events.

As the COVID-19 situation can change rapidly such as we saw in the Northern Beaches, NSW Health restrictions may be eased or increased accordingly. The Public Health Order at the time of the event will apply.

Q4. Schools are planning to provide tours of the school for prospective parents. What is NSW Health’s advice?

A4. Schools may schedule appointments with individual parents within COVID-19 safe practices. Should schools wish to have groups of parents tour the school they should create a COVID-19 Safe Plan for the event. NSW Health recommend holding these events out of school hours.

Q5. Are schools (required to register their COVID Safe Business Plan with NSW? A5. NSW Health advise that schools need to keep a copy of their COVID safe plans however schools are not required to register their plan with Services NSW. Q6. A number of students attend schools outside the Greater Sydney area. They travel to and from the Greater Sydney area each day. Are those over 12 required to wear a mask and if so, for all or part of the trip?

A6. The current Public Health (COVID-19 Mandatory Face Coverings) Order 2021 requires students to wear masks while on public transport, or school buses in the Greater Sydney area. Schools may advise students when they must wear a mask during the journey or require students to wear a mask for the whole trip to avoid confusion. Students 12 years and under are exempted from this requirement.

Q7. Does the NSW Health advice as outlined in the Term 1 guidelines apply to all schools?

A7. The guidelines are intended to be enabling in that they provide flexibility specifically for schools within the Public Health Orders.
