Enjoy the Spring break! A long and productive school term is drawing to a close and the students and staff are looking forward to a well-earned holiday. Thankfully it has been a very settled time for all our operations with no interruptions due to the coronavirus pandemic. We have much to be thankful for! I am very proud of the work our Year 12 teachers have done in the preparation of our students who will start the statewide HSC examinations in Week 2 of Term 4. Of particular note has been the support by the Visual Arts, T.A.S. and Music departments. The major works and performances have all been completed to an exceptional standard despite the ongoing operational restrictions. Congratulations to the members of the class of 2020 who have so successfully managed many changes to routines and timetables with wonderful cooperation, positivity and good cheer! Might the Spring holiday break be an incredibly valuable time for your final HSC preparations. To all parents, staff and students – thank you for your co-operation and support during these challenging times. With the ongoing drop in coronavirus cases in NSW and across Australia we anticipate some relaxation of restrictions during Term 4. As always, we will be guided by NSW Health. Positive Psychology at Scots All Saints College – an Update Fourteen teachers based on the All Saints Campus participated in an interactive Zoom session with Dr Paula Robinson on Monday 14 September. Titled, 'Foundations of Wellbeing at SASC', the session provided teachers with a working knowledge of wellbeing, positive psychology and positive education. The completion of a few online activities will assist participants to consolidate the topics covered within the session. This session was recorded, and the course will form the basis for orientation of all remaining College staff next year, as well as becoming part of the orientation process for new staff commencing at the College.
easy to make excuses, they have persevered – adjusting to the educational landscape as it has evolved this year. They have gotten on with the job of learning and done it remarkably well. In a time of social distancing when it would have been easier for each individual to retreat inwards and just worry about themselves, they have shown genuine care for their peers and for others. Year 12 2020 has set a benchmark that will present a challenge for future Year 12 groups to attain. They have traveled a long and difficult road; let’s support them with our hopes, wishes and prayers as they finish their school journey. Happy Holidays In closing, I wish our students well for the upcoming holiday period. This has been a long term with very few (if any) breaks to routine. However, in trying circumstances, we have been able to maintain our core business of teaching and learning, face-to-face, without interruption. I wish the girls and boys happy times with their families and friends, and look forward to finishing the year with them in Term 4.
The same teachers will continue to work with Paula via Zoom and Canvas on a weekly basis next term to complete the ‘Practising Certificate for Wellbeing in Education’. Together with the staff who completed the certificate course in 2019, we will have a total of forty staff trained, with a spread of teaching and nonteaching staff across both campuses within the day school and the boarding houses. This number will be expanded next year, with staff being invited to complete the Certificate course once they have done the Foundations course. We are close to launching our College model for wellbeing. This is an important step in embedding wellbeing and positive psychology across the College as the model provides the necessary framework upon which activities, initiatives and programs are structured. The graphics for the model are being finalised and I expect it to be announced early in Term 4. Year 12 – The Race is Almost Run I would like to congratulate our Year 12 students, both as individuals and as a group. They would have been a great group of young people in normal circumstances but in the current circumstances they have been extraordinary. When it would have been

Grand Final Results Congratulations to the winter sport teams that made it through to the Grand Finals. It certainly was a very different winter season with many challenges. We congratulate the netball players and coaches of the SASC 14 Reds (20-16), the SASC Colts (25-21) and SASC 1st VII (34-32) who were all victorious in their Grand Finals. Unfortunately, the 1st XI hockey girls were runners up this season due to the countback system used after a drawn game. We are extremely proud of the all the teams and these fantastic results. Netball Umpire C Badge We congratulate Grace Evans (Year 11) for achieving her C Badge umpiring qualification on Saturday 12 September. Grace has been umpiring to a high standard for a number of years and despite the COVID challenges this season was able to get the necessary training and mentoring to pass her umpire assessment with flying colours. Well done Grace. Scots All Saints Swim Academy The SASC Swimming Academy programs have continued successfully over the past three weeks. Having an indoor heated pool has been of great relief as we have not missed any sessions due Monday

to poor weather. Our students have been learning the whole range of swimming skills, from developing water confidence and learning how to swim to learning strokes and building fitness. Our programs cater for all levels and we aim to increase the range and levels of squads and learn to swim places in Term 4 with our Spring Season. We have also had 23 of our Senior School students being trained as either Life Guards or Teachers of Swimming. We look forward to these students graduating from their training and using their skills to help mentor and teach younger SASC students in Term 4. Proposed Spring Season Swimming Program Below is our proposed timetable of programs for the Spring Season (Term 4). We have approached a swim coach to take on the morning sessions, however, they are not able to start until mid-November. Until this time, we are offering two morning sessions for our High Intensity Performance Squad members. These are our strongest swimmers who will swim longer distances at higher intensities. We have also split the Junior squads into Sharks and Dolphins to cater for the different swimming levels. Our popular Performance Squad (Challenge Group) in the afternoons caters for those unable to make morning sessions or for those students who enjoy their swimming and want to develop their all-round skills, improve their endurance and be prepared for our swimming carnivals. For students wanting to join our SASC Swimming Academy Programs in Term 4 - we ask parents to please complete the Google Form that will be sent to families via Operoo this week. Students already enrolled from Term 3 do not need to re-enrol, your positions will be secured.

What an exciting day for the College last Saturday with so many teams in local competition grand finals and semi-finals. It was a wonderful example of what our students on both campuses are capable of. Below are the match reports for the Middle School teams.

The improved fitness and skills that they learned along the way were applied purposely in all games and none more than in the Grand Final. Congratulations to this outstanding group of girls; Eva Green, Nikki Browne, Laura Scott, Lottie Telford, Adina MacCabe, Grace Francis, Sophie Lewis, Millie Davies and Eliza Fox. Special mention to Eliza Fox who was named by the BNA as the player of the Grand Final match.
SASC 14 Red Netball team Congratulations to the 14 Red netball team who won the 14A netball competition in Bathurst last Saturday against a very strong Mana Koru outfit. The Reds were extremely focused and hungry for the premiership that laid in waiting. Mana Koru, their opposition, were not going to make this an easy task. In fact, in our previous encounter with this team, the very first game of the season, Mana won the match by 5 goals. With an extra training session through the week to fine tune their preparation, the SASC 14 Reds were as ready as they were ever going to be. The start to the game was as good as we could have hoped for. The SASC Reds were able to capitalize on the errors of the opposition by scoring on their centre passes and ensuring that they looked after their own centre passes. The defense through the centre court in this quarter was outstanding. At quarter time the girls were up by 5 goals but were aware that Mana were going to come back at them with a vengeance. As predicted, Mana stepped up a gear and put pressure on our attack equalizing the score at half time. As many netball coaches are aware, the third quarter can make or break a game – it was time to try and pull away. The SASC Reds had an excellent third quarter and were back in the lead but only by a couple of goals. At this point the premiership was still within reach for both teams. It would come down to the team who could play with greater accuracy and focus for the remaining 10 minutes. I am pleased to say that the SASC Red girls were that team. They held out the opposition in a most composed and mature manner with every player fulfilling their role exceptionally. It was a thrilling 20 – 16 victory to the mighty SASC 14 Red. This team of 9 girls have been an absolute pleasure to coach throughout the season. SASC 14 Red Soccer team A semi-final against the competition leaders Macquarie Tomcats on Proctor 1 was the assignment for SASC. No excuses were available with a perfect pitch and weather served up. The team followed the game plan and outplayed the opposition in the early stages, however, as can be the case a spectacular goal from the opposition against the run of play saw us concede. To the team’s credit, through good lead up play, we levelled the score by half time. The realisation that a finals berth could be achieved spurred the team on and in the second half they continued in a similar fashion to the first with many opportunities for us and less for the Tomcats. Weary legs started to see a shift in momentum and a well taken, long range shot found our net with less than 10 minutes to go. Not to be deterred the team threw everything into trying to equalise but a well taken free kick outside our penalty area sealed our fate with minutes to go resulting in a 1-3 score line. Congratulations must be extended to the Senior School teams who also had terrific success in their Grand Final games. Active Afternoons I would like to thank all the coaches and instructors who have lead our students so well in all Active Afternoon activities. Alongside our committed teaching staff, we are building a fantastic group of external coaches and instructors who are very passionate in their specific area.
The team continued to develop increasing personal skills, cohesiveness and awareness. This helped them play their best game on the day which was not reflected in the score line. The player of the match went to Alex Goddard who was everywhere through the midfield with endless energy and perseverance before finally succumbing to a knee injury picked up a few weeks ago. U/15 Blue Hockey Team
Last weekend the U15’s Blue SASC hockey team finished off the short season with a bang, when they played in the Grand final against the combined team of Kelso and Souths. It was a tight game with both teams scoring a goal each way within a few minutes. Kelso then managed to score another goal through a short corner attempt, leaving the score at 2-1 their way in the first half. After a good team talk on the field at half time, SASC were ready to keep pushing and certainly weren’t ready to give up. With some speedy recovery, we managed to get in another two goals and hold the score at 3-2 our way for the rest of the game. There was a lot of solid work from the defensive and attacking lines and their effort ensured the SASC

From the P&F Mr Grant Baker P&F President We have now reached the end of Term 3 and we have to start looking toward the forthcoming year. The next meeting of the Association is on Wednesday 21 October (Term 4 Week 2) and will be the Annual General Meeting. In accordance with the Association’s Constitution we must: • Elect members of the Executive and Committee, • Adopt the statement of accounts, • Appoint a reviewer for our accounts, • Consider any alterations of the Association Constitution. The Association is to have an Executive consisting of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary, and a Committee of between 5 and 7 members. The following is a brief description of each role, for which you may wish to consider nominating. I would urge people to seriously consider getting involved and being part of the Association, its Executive or Committee. President The President will generally Chair and convene meetings of the Association, working alongside the Executive to organise meetings, prepare meeting agendas, and provide support in the financial affairs of the Association. They will also provide leadership and direction to the Association in planning for events, fund raisers, Association communications, whilst working collaboratively with the Head of College, and other executive College staff. This role requires someone who is able to listen to different points of view, is highly organised, and can communicate with members, such as through a column in The Roar. It is estimated that the role would ordinarily require approximately 10-15 hours per month. Vice President The role of Vice President is to fulfill the role of President in their absence or when required. It is estimated that the role would ordinarily require approximately 6 hours per month. Treasurer The Treasurer will ensure all financial dealings of the Association are carried out and recorded in an efficient and transparent way, by keeping complete and accurate financial records. They will make arrangements for payments where required, present financial reports to meetings and organise the annual review of accounts for presentation to the Annual General Meeting. This role requires someone with good numerical skills and an understanding of financial accountability. Subject to the level of fundraising activity this role can have periods where it is

extremely busy but always with the support of other members of the Association. With the responsibilities involved, there has been some initial discussion on the possibility of engaging an independent book keeper to maintain the books. It is estimated that the role would ordinarily require approximately 16-20 hours per month, but this has been hard to determine in 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Secretary The Secretary will organise meetings of the Association, including the preparation of the agenda, venue, and meeting notifications, record the minutes at each meeting, distribute minutes, correspondence, and maintain a register of members. It is estimated that the role would ordinarily require approximately 6 hours per month. Committee Members In order to undertake the activities of the Association, it needs a Committee to discuss and assist the Executive in decision making, by offering different points of view into the running of the Association. The Committee and other members of the College community may be called upon to help plan, prepare and run fundraising activities, in cooperation with the College. Should you be interested in getting involved, and wish to nominate for a role, please do not hesitate in contacting us at sascpfa@outlook.com. I have sadly advised the existing Committee, Head of College and College Council that I will not be nominating for the position of President for 2021, as I take up further professional responsibilities in November. Despite the challenges in 2020 I have found it highly rewarding and a great way of meeting people, and supporting the College.. I remain supportive of the College and Association and look forward to people nominating for a role on the next Executive or Committee. It is a great way of giving back to the College, and investing in its future. The Value of Learning to Swim Join the SASC Swimming Academy Program Learning to swim is as important as learning academic subjects such as Maths and English, it is a life skill. Fortunately, children will not die if they cannot add up accurately or write an impressive essay, however, children can die if they were to get into a body of water and cannot swim. Sadly, each year many Australian children die from drowning. A child can drown in as little as 30cm of water, a bath, a pond or a dam. For children, water is attractive and can be lethal. Even with good supervision and safety measures in place the only thing that will save a child is their understanding of the environment and being able to swim. Parents often ask “how long will it take for my child to learn to swim to be able to save themselves?” The simple answer is that each child will progress and develop confidence at different rates, but every lesson is an investment in their safety. An argument that comes up from time to time is the high cost of swimming lessons. What price can you really put a child’s life? Fortunately, here at the Scots All Saints College we are extremely lucky to be able to offer very reasonably priced swimming lessons with a fully qualified ASCTA swimming teacher and staff who are passionate about teaching swimming to your children. Our Indoor Pool is heated (about 28 degrees) and we are sheltered from all the weather elements. Middle School Visual Arts news This term Stage 4 Middle School Visual Artists have been busy immersing themselves in traditional and contemporary practices. Year 7 have experimented with charcoal, conté chalks, ink, oil pastels and soft pastels and digital drawing software to hone their skills in preparation for this terms assessment artworks. Students studied the landscapes of Vincent Van Gogh and David Hockney comparing their styles, materiality and elements. After choosing an artwork as a guide, each student created a traditional landscape drawing and a digital artwork. graphics tablets to draw like contemporary and innovative 21st century artists. Their final artworks are amazing, these Middle School students are so talented. Year 8 have explored Pablo Picasso and the Cubist art movement. Layering together both collage and drawing, students have created synthetic cubist works to depict a still life arrangement. The artworks are looking authentic and reflective of the art movement that shook the art world 100 years ago. ROAR Hiking trip for Thompson House
On Saturday 12 September the Year 9 and 10 boys from Thompson House took a hike through Mount Canobolas to Federal Falls and back. After a week of house meetings, we finally got to Saturday, and, with a slow start, headed to Orange in the bus. Accompanied by Mr Ball and Mr Goddard, we made our way down the mountain, chatting with each other and hiking through a beautiful bush landscape. When we reached the waterfall, we had a rest, explored a small cave behind the falls, and took up Mr Ball’s offer of beef jerky. As the saying goes, what goes down, must come up. The way back to the bus felt long and tiresome, however, it was rewarding and a nice change of

pace. We had planned to have a barbeque at the campsite when we got back but the barbeque was out of order, so we decided to head to Lake Canobolas instead, making use of their great facilities and amazing greenery. When it was all said and done, we headed back to school, not without a Maccas run of course, unloaded the bus and relaxed after a long day. I am glad that we were able to have this experience and I look forward to when it opens to the rest of the boarding community. Nothing can replace the excitement of the annual Language Day Concert. This year has been extraordinarily different! So, for your entertainment, Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 Classes of 2020 have combined to share with you their harmonious French tones and a snippet of what they have been learning this term. COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe Thank you for your support and understanding of all things COVID-19 this term. I understand there has been some frustration and disappointment along the way, however with your help we have managed to survive the term COVID-free and that’s largely due to the effort and care of the entire College community. We look forward to Term 4 and resuming a number of activities that had to be placed on hold until now. As it stands, we anticipate resuming our postponed music and sporting programmes along with a number of other co-curricular activities. There is still a degree of uncertainty regarding the specifics of what, when and how these activities will resume but planning is underway and we will keep you updated as we receive advice from the NSW Government and the Association of Independent Schools. It stands to reason, that the advice we receive on resuming activities will be dependent on any clusters or outbreaks of COVID-19 that may occur in NSW during the school holidays. As such, we ask once again that if you’re traveling, please check the NSW Health website for any warnings about the area you intend to travel to and avoid the areas of higher risk. Please remember also that if you have a Hay Fever sufferer in your home, the school holidays is an ideal time to get on top of those symptoms ready for Term 4. Whilst online uniform purchases are still the preference of the College, the Scots All Saints Uniform Shop will be open strictly by appointment only for those students in need of a fitting over the school holidays and in Term 4. If you wish to make a booking, please use the details in the letter provided in this edition of The Roar or phone the Uniform Shop on (02) 8069 0470.
