Year 12 – End of School Arrangements Throughout this year, all members of our communities have been subject to unexpected changes in our lifestyles, business operations, family life and in the case of schools, our routines and traditional practices. We have been extremely fortunate to maintain all of our core curricular programs, our boarding operations and where possible to find alternative ways of doing things, such as our ‘Active Afternoon’ sport program.

Year 11 Examinations Year 11 will sit their final exams for their Preliminary Courses in Week 9.
As Year 12 students approach the end of their schooling, they and their families have great expectations that we will celebrate this important milestone, and we will! The major focus at the moment is to do everything we can to ensure our Year 12 Students (and all students) remain healthy for the HSC examinations from Tuesday, 20 October – Wednesday, 11 November. The last thing we want is to have to interrupt these examinations. With this in mind the formal farewells and family dinner have been rescheduled. The Formal Farewell will be held at the Bathurst Goldfields on 27 November 2020.

Crazy Sock Day - Friday 4 September On Friday, 4 September 2020 Junior School students wore crazy socks to raise money for Masila. The students raised $209. Special thanks to all the fathers/ grandfathers/special friends who wore crazy socks to their place of work on the day and to those who emailed a photo through to their child’s teacher. There were some great photos!

Stage 1 are simply bringing an item in from home where they will deliver a 30 second - 60 second presentation to try and convince their audience to buy their item. Stage 2 students can do the same as Stage 1 or they can define a ‘real world’ problem and identify a solution, invention or way of combating the problem. I’m looking forward to hearing some of the ideas from the students. Visual Arts In Visual Arts, students have been enjoying the opportunity to express themselves creatively and imaginatively using a range of techniques, subject matter and media whilst developing an appreciation of the work of well-known artists. Students have used a variety of mediums suitable for 2D or 3D art making. All work has been built on explicit teaching of the elements of art and opportunities to experiment and be creative. Much of the work is now hanging in classroom galleries and a select few have made it to the Junior School Office. Well done students on all of your hard work! Continued page 4
Positive Psychology Several Junior School teachers recently commenced the Appli (Applied Positive Pscychology Learning Institute) Practising Certificate for Wellbeing in Education. The Certificate will provide teachers with a specialised skillset which will enable them to apply the latest research and best practices to improve wellbeing in our College. The Pitch Students should be finalising their ‘pitch’ as they look to convince their audience of the value of something. ‘The Pitch’ aims to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours that students will need to live and work successfully in the 21st century including

Literature Festival or Junior School Showcase I’d like to commend all the students on how they have worked throughout the term. To celebrate student effort throughout the term, we’ll be having an end of term picnic next Friday 25 September on the lawns of Britton House. Dining Hall students will be provided with a takeaway lunch so they can join other students for a special picnic and games session. Students just need to bring their lunch as normal as there can be no sharing of food. Book Week End of Term Picnic It’s hard to believe we’re almost at the end of Term 3. It has certainly been very different to all previous Term 3's. Whilst we haven’t been able to have some of our special annual events like the Father’s Day Breakfast,

RUOK? Day Thank you to all of the students and teachers who wore yellow to school last Thursday to help raise awareness of mental health issues and ensuring that we all take time in the day to check on our friends. There were many discussions during the day in the children’s classes about the huge impact it has on your own mental health knowing that other people care about you.

Year 8 2021 Leadership Selection Process Next week I will be talking to all of the current Year 7 students about how they go about nominating themselves and applying for a Year 8 Leadership role next year. These roles provide students with the opportunity to have an influence in the future of the school and also develop their own leadership skills. I encourage all students interested in this opportunity to nominate and apply. Active Afternoons Students have selected their activities and sports for Term 4 and we will continue to run our Active Afternoons sessions on Thursdays after lunch. This format appears to be working well as we have been able to offer a wider range of activities whilst still giving the students the opportunity to compete in the core sports and play in local competitions.

Rebooting next term We await the guidelines for Term 4 from the NSW Department of Health in relation to what schools can and cannot reintroduce next term. As soon as we know we will update parents on events such as assemblies, end of year functions, camps and any other things that have been on hold this term. We look forward to Term 4 and the opportunities that may become available if COVID-19 restrictions ease.

Senior Examinations & HSC Preparation Year 12 have recently completed their Trial HSC Exams and their final school report will be sent out to parents shortly. For some of you this will be the final year of your involvement in formal schooling. Congratulations to the students and parents on reaching this milestone! Our Mentor Program sees Year 12 students teamed up with a staff member to discuss results, study strategies and to provide support during this important final year. At present Year 12 students and their parents are meeting with Mentors for the final time to review results and provide ongoing academic advice and support to Year 12 on their countdown to the HSC Examinations.
Year 9 Parent-Teacher Interviews The Year 9 P/T Interviews will be conducted via Zoom early Term 4. Parents will receive an email next week with instructions for logging into ‘PTO’ to make bookings. It is anticipated that parents will complete their bookings during the holidays so that staff have time to arrange Zoom meetings when they return for Term 4.
Year 11 Preliminary Final Examinations are continuing this week. At the start of Term 4 our Year 11 students will commence the HSC component of their courses and will be assigned a Mentor with whom they will meet on a regular basis as they progress throughout Year 12. Uniform Changeover Deadline The deadline for all students to be in the new Scots All Saints uniform is only a few months away. From January 2021, all students are required to be in the correct formal and sport uniforms. Families may find it to their advantage to begin planning now for the changeover. 2020 Musical Instrument Service Students and parents will be notified this week of the dates for the annual service of all hired musical instruments. Keep an eye out for the email with instructions and more information.

From the P&F Mr Grant Baker P&F President
It is amazing to think this week is Week 9, and since my last report, the COVID-19 situation continues to unfold. The one thing we can all be thankful for is that the College has continued to work hard to maintain as normal a term for our children as possible. A couple of weeks ago we held the Term 3 Week 7 meeting via Zoom, and once again it was great to see some new faces. We were joined by parents, Sally Nevill and Sarah McKiernan… welcome ladies. We also had a special guest in Mr Matthew Banning the College’s new Chief Operating Officer, who provided us with an insight into a variety of improvement projects that the College is looking to pursue, across both campuses. We also had a couple of apologies from Rhonwen Hazell, Ben Whitwell, Mr Weeks, Mr Jackman and Ms Leaf. Despite the ongoing requirement to undertake our meetings via Zoom, it is fantastic to know that we continue to welcome other parents to our meetings. Improvement Projects Mr Banning has been working closely with Mr Weeks and the College Leadership Team to identify and prioritise projects across both Bathurst campuses and he spent some time presenting these and discussing them with attendees. Following this, everyone had an opportunity to talk about them, and offer any personal insights. The meeting decided that it would be prudent to wait for more detail on the scope and costings of various projects before committing to anything specific. As the Association remains in its infancy, with very little opportunity to actively fundraise in 2020, those in attendance agreed we needed to do further work on our budget, allocating funds for unplanned small reactive requests, our operational budget to ensure we could fund upfront costs for events/functions, and develop our preferred projects, both short term and long term. We also want to hear the thoughts of the College community, and urge any parents to join us to discuss the topic further at the next meeting, currently scheduled for Wednesday, 21 October (Term 4 Week 2), which I expect will be via Zoom. Boarding Gemma Green offered us an update on how things are going amongst our boarding families and their recent Zoom meetings. Knowing Gemma I am sure they have been great fun, and offered an opportunity for families to share stories and have a laugh. It is great to hear of the work being undertaken by Mr Le Couteur and his team to develop our boarding opportunities and the facilities on offer. Amid the current situation it is heartening to hear of the growing boarding family as people from across NSW identify with opportunities on offer here in Bathurst, rather than the challenges of Sydney. Future Events Remember Association meetings, are generally held on the Wednesday of Week 2 and Week 7 each term, and we welcome others attending. The College website and The Roar continue to provide these dates. Getting to know you... Senior School Teachers Mr Michael Germech
I joined the team at Scots All Saints early last year and am currently a Mathematics and iSTEM teacher on the Scots Campus. After completing an Honours Degree in Physics at the University of Melbourne I began a career in the commercial world where I held various roles including as a Project Manager for road construction, Business Management in housing construction and a little

I am the Acting Head of HSIE and the Assistant Head of Thompson House on the Scots Campus. I started teaching History at All Saints’ College fin 2008. Before I became a teacher, I did heritage building restoration in Sydney. I have a love of sport and played soccer as a youngster and cricket into my late 20s. I was the Master

over a decade working with an explosives company in the mining industry. Since becoming a teacher in 2006 I have taught a range of subjects in the Science, Computing, Technology and Mathematics faculties – and hence am a proud card-carrying member of the 'Nerd Club'. I grew up in outer Melbourne and hence follow the great Australian football code as a Hawthorn supporter. I have a great love for sport and have been fortunate to play both Netball and Basketball at a range of representative levels. These days, you will find me more often standing on the side of the court as a coach, although I do manage to run up and down in the middle when time permits. In my spare time at home I can be often found completing a renovation project while my ideal holidays
involve skiing in the winter and at a surf beach in Summer. My choice to enter the Teaching profession was largely due to the encouragement of my Mum who was a primary teacher for 30 years. I am pleased I finally followed her advice (when aren’t mothers right?) and I hope my enjoyment of teaching is obvious to all who enter my classroom. Making mistakes is an essential part of the learning process and it is important that young people can do so in a safe environment so they can explore their abilities without fear of being seen as a failure. In the past year and a half, I have found Scots All Saints College to be strongly aligned with my personal values and an organisation where students and staff are supported to achieve their very best. I look forward to many more years as a part of this wonderful school.
in Charge of Cricket and the First XI coach whilst at All Saints’ College. I have been fortunate to take three school tours to Europe, traveling from London and the Western Front battlefields, through Germany and into Rome and the Bay of Naples. The world really is the best classroom; travelling brings my passions of teaching and history alive. I hope to travel again soon. My favourite part of teaching is being in the classroom with students. I am a strong advocate of freedom of expression and that learning should be fun and explorative. I am incredibly lucky to teach students who love sharing their opinions, having a laugh and being intellectually challenged. I like my History classrooms to be safe
havens for critical thought and the analysis of controversial ideas, to understand the vicissitudes of the people who have shaped our world. We manage to have a good time whilst navigating the syllabus together. Scots All Saints has a dedicated and supportive staff, many of whom I consider friends. It is great to work at place where people genuinely care for each other and share laughter – the best stress reliever! I am fortunate to have a loving wife who also works in boarding, and two sons who attend the College. We are all very excited to be a part of the building of our new school and the opportunities it brings to our rural community.

COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe Dear Parents and Carers; As you are aware, earlier in Term 3 the NSW Government introduced tighter restrictions on School based activities. These restrictions were introduced in reaction to a spike of cases in NSW associated with the second wave in Victoria and were only ever intended to remain in place for the duration of Term Three. With this in mind it’s our intention for Term 4 to resume a number of the activities that were placed on hold this term. This will still be subject to State Government guidelines and dependent on case numbers in our region remaining low. With the HSC Exams approaching it's important that all of our HSC students are aware that expedited COVID test results are available to them. When attending for a COVID test simply make it known that you’re an HSC student and your sample will be marked and dealt with accordingly. Once again, we’d like to remind parents and carers of Hay fever sufferers that whilst COVID symptoms related to Hay fever still require a COVID test, after returning a negative test, if a student is still symptomatic after ten days away from school the State Government protocols allow for us to accept a doctors’ certificate stating that the student has tested negative for COVID and that the symptoms are part of their condition at this time of year. Once this document has been supplied to the college the child is welcome to return to school. As stated above, resuming activities is dependent on case numbers staying low. With this in mind we really want to discourage any non-essential travel to areas where case numbers are higher than in our region over the school holidays. We ask that if you do travel to those regions that you exercise extra care and caution. Please bear in mind that should any outbreaks occur over the school holidays we may have to exclude families who traveled to those areas for the first two weeks of Term 4.
