R U OK? Today is National R U OK? Day. It is that time when we focus on our emotional wellbeing in a caring and sensitive way.

We are all connected to each other and collectively we have the power to help each other to be OK. Our School Leaders: Stella Gavey and Grace Milton from Year 12, spoke passionately to the students this morning. Here is their address: The R U OK? Mission is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with and support those around them.

• Problems with school work • Being bored • Having a medical condition or chronic illness • Not sleeping well • Not exercising enough • Hormonal changes • Special needs Be aware of certain behaviours and signs that can indicate a young person might be struggling.

The first thing to look out for are changes in behaviour.

When people feel low, they often: • Withdraw from their friends or their family • Lash out at people and get angry or upset really easily, including towards the people they care about • Cry or become emotional • Lose interest in activities and things they usually love • Have changed sleeping patterns. They might be sleeping all the time, not sleeping much at all, or sleeping at strange hours (such as in the middle of the day) • Have a changed appetite. They could be eating more than usual, or less.

Young people cannot be expected to fix someone’s problems, nor know the best way to help and support.

However they can listen to what their friend is saying, let them know they care and tell a teacher, school counsellor or trusted adult if they are worried about their friend.

The theme for R U OK? Day 2020 is "There’s more to say after R U OK?" You may have noticed the yellow posters that have been placed around the school.

There are many different versions, each with different ways you could continue the conversation after asking the question. If you would like more detailed information, you are more than welcome to see us after assembly this morning for an info-sheet. These infosheets will be available from the table outside the staffroom if you would like to get one later in the day.

Finally, remember that mental health is a serious issue.

R U OK? Day is a serious way to support those in need.

We ask that you do not undermine the day by treating it as a joke.

In doing so, you could actually make the situation worse for someone who is having a tough enough time already.

Remember, each of us has the power to make every day for everyone a better day. Ask and Act for each other.

R U OK? Day 2020 The R U OK? mission is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with and support those around them. R U OK? Day is Thursday 10 September 2020. If you feel like something’s not quite the same with someone you know there’s something going on in their life or you notice a change in what they’re saying or doing - trust that gut instinct and take the time to ask them “Are you OK?” If someone says they’re not OK, make time to listen, encourage action and check in.

There’s more to say after R U OK? Learn what to say at www.ruok.org.au Now could be a great time to ask your child “Are you OK?" and to support them in the event that they are struggling. However, as we all know, having a meaningful conversation with teenagers can be tricky.

ReachOut Australia has created resources to help parents help their young people. Find out how you can effectively communicate with your child and some practical things to try to engage your teenager in a meaningful conversation.

Bathurst Regional Youth Council – Applications Open The Bathurst Regional Youth Council provides an opportunity for young people aged between 15 and 18 years to engage with the Bathurst Regional Council and other youth service providers. Members of the Bathurst Regional Youth Council have the opportunity to develop and promote youth-friendly activities, voice young people’s opinions and concerns, raise awareness of youth issues and develop an understanding of Local Government’s planning and operational processes.

As per recent COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the Government, Interviews for the 2020/2021 Bathurst Regional Youth Council will be conducted online.

Online meetings will also apply to project planning and any Youth Council meetings. This process will be continued until such time as restrictions are eased by way of direction from the Government.

Applications for the Bathurst Regional Youth Council 2020/2021 are currently open. Applications close on Tuesday 15 September 2020 at 4:00 pm. Winter Sport Season End and Finals

The Senior Campus will commence the summer season for Active Afternoons on Tuesday 15 September. The students have indicated their choices and Mr Gardner has reviewed the lists and is getting things prepared for the new season. Additional information for the Core College Sports will be distributed in the coming weeks. Similarly, Mrs Nelson is well under way with the planning for the Junior and Middle School Summer seasons which will commence in Term 4.

Again, we thank the Heads of Sport for their work with getting these programs organised. We are still very much restricted for the upcoming summer season and will do our best to find appropriate activities and competitions for our students to be involved with.

Dance Group Our Senior Dance group have been working hard during their Active Afternoons session developing and refining a routine to enter into the Bathurst Eisteddfod.

Our Dance Teacher, Molly has done a great job leading the girls and inspiring them with dance. Mrs Jooste reflected on the energy, positivity and enjoyment that the girls exhibited throughout the term and commended them on this. We wish the girls all the best with their video entry in the eisteddfod.

The students who have competed in the very brief local association winter sport competitions will be finishing their seasons in the coming weekends. We send our best wishes to the players and coaches of our netball, hockey and soccer teams that make the semi-finals and finals. We again, thank the students and parents for their support in the most peculiar season. Playing a limited number of rounds with very small sideline support, restricted warm ups and with extra procedures has been very different to previous seasons, but we are grateful that we had the opportunity to play at all.

Scots All Saints Swim Academy Our swimming programs began last week with two educational programs (Lifeguarding and Teacher of Swimming) training. There are approximately 12 students in each program and we look forward to seeing them progress through the courses.

Our Learn2Swim, Junior Dolphins and Performance Squads commenced this week. Enrolments for these squads have been outstanding. We have filled both the squads and have only a few spare places in the Learn2Swim classes. In Term 4 we expect more spaces to become available as we split our Performance Squad up and introduce more time slots for Learn2Swim and Junior Dolphins.

Year 9 and 10 Outdoor Education Experiences The proposed Year 9 and 10 Outdoor Education Experiences for 2020 have been cancelled. As our camps were booked for the last full week of the 2020 school year we were hopeful that our students might still be able to go to camp. We also investigated the camp coming to us.

Unfortunately, the current restrictions and advice to not prepare for such activities has left us with no other option than to cancel for 2020.

We are hopeful that in 2021 we can offer students opportunities to be involved in outdoor education and leadership programs including the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and the Australian Army Cadets program.

Lunch Time Touch Football Competition After three weeks of some friendly rivalry on the Touch Football field, a spot for the finals suddenly became hotly contested. Congratulations to all students in the Middle School who participated. The enjoyment amongst players and spectators was most apparent and the staff refereeing or spectating from a distance were impressed with the skills and enthusiasm across the Stages. Grand final matches have been rescheduled to Friday due to inclement conditions on Wednesday. Good luck to the following teams.

Term 4 Active Afternoons Team lists and coaches are currently being finalised for Term 4 Active Afternoons. Letters for Core Sports will be sent out late Week 9 explaining the process for registration, uniform requirements, competition guidelines and costs.

Netball The Bathurst Netball Association made a decision last week to include another round of netball for teams who did not make the finals. This was a welcomed decision in what has been a short and unusual season.

All teams can expect a game this Saturday 12 September, please refer to the sports draw for details.

We wish the SASC 14 Red, SASC 14 Blue and SASC 12 Gold teams the best of luck in their semi-final games.

Hockey Congratulations to our hockey teams who are stampeding towards finals. Mr Greg Jones has made all families aware of the change in the U/15’s draw for this Saturday, please refer to the email he sent on Tuesday. Good luck to all teams who will take to the field representing the College this Saturday.

Soccer The soccer competition is drawing to a close. The SASC teams have certainly been a visible ‘club’ this year with 14 teams donning the navy, blue and red strip. With limited games remaining, I would like to congratulate all teams for their commitment to the competition. Best of luck to the SASC 14 Red team who look like probable contenders for finals and whilst we can’t all be there to spectate and support on the sidelines, we wish you every success.

1st XV Rugby presentation Congratulations to the 2020 1st XV and Captain, Hugh Parsons who have certainly learnt more about life than rugby this season. Not once did they complain or give up hope as they trained with the intensity of a grand final preparation each week.

Thank you also to co-coaches, Mr Peter Koen and Mr Marcus Croft for their dedication and service to this wonderful group of young men. Thanks must also go to our ever-present patron of rugby and past student, Mr John Cranfield for his unwavering support and words of wisdom. COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe Following the changes in guidelines for schools made by the NSW Government a few weeks ago, we have all settled into yet another version of the 'new-normal' here at school. We would like to thank everyone for working with us in doing what was necessary to ensure compliance with the updated guidelines and safeguarding our community.

We understand that some of the changes may have caused disappointment and frustration. It can be confusing as to why some activities are permitted and others are not. By way of explanation for this, the guidelines that were sent to schools provided what was essentially a list of criteria that every activity had to meet in order to be permissible. If any one criteria wasn’t met, we were required to cease that activity.

Please rest assured that no changes have been made lightly. It is our hope that the NSW Government will review the guidelines so we may be able to resume some activities at the beginning of Term 4.

We would again like to remind everyone that children who are unwell should not come to school. Whilst it can be difficult to keep a child home and go through the testing process for only a mild cold, sending your child to school means a worst case scenario of spreading COVID-19 but most definitely spreading cold and flu viruses meaning that other families will suffer the inconvenience of having to keep their children home and get them tested.

If we all follow the guidelines, we will minimise the impact of the cold and flu season on everyone. If you are contacted to collect your child from school, it is a requirement that you do so as soon as possible and that your child only returns to school when they are 'symptom-free' and have returned a negative result for COVID-19.

We would like to request that everyone please take time to consider their travel plans for the upcoming school holidays.

The absolute No-Go zones are listed at this link: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest-news-and-updates under the heading “Self Isolate and get tested immediately if you’ve been to these locations”. However the 'areas with increased testing and surveillance' and 'Monitor for Symptoms if you’ve been to these areas' still have a large enough number of cases that there is risk associated with going there.

We urge you to reconsider travel to those locations unless it is absolutely essential and remind you that if any particular area becomes high risk over the school holidays, we will be forced to ask that all students who have been in that area remain away from school for fourteen days from their date of return from the area. This may impact on a students’ ability to return to school at the beginning of Term 4.

Finally, the NSW Government has issued guidelines relating to Hay fever Season and COVID-19. The guidelines are as follows: “Students who have seasonal allergic rhinitis or another condition that presents similarly to flu-like symptoms are still required to get tested for COVID-19 and return a negative test result. Where their symptoms continue beyond 10 days, students should provide documentation from their GP confirming their symptoms are typical for their condition. If the student develops new or changed symptoms, they should get tested for COVID-19.

Students who do not undertake a COVID-19 test result will not be permitted to return to school for a 10 day period.

Additionally, they must be symptom free for at least 3 days prior to returning to school.”

With the above in mind we would encourage all of our Hay fever sufferers to think about treatment early this year in order to prevent the onset of symptoms and associated testing and absences.

The more people who are careful and do the right thing, the better our chances of keeping our community free of COVID-19.
