Inaugural ‘space for stories’ photo competition winners announced

The students undertook the challenge with great imagination and creativity with more than 80 entries being submitted over a few weeks. All entries were impressive and ranged from reading on horseback to being part of a shop front display and in the bucket of an excavator. Beloved animals were prominent reading partners with dogs, chickens, goats, cockatoos and even kangaroos featuring in many entries.

All of the entries are on display in the library and it has been a popular space for students to visit and look for their friends, peers and even some teachers in the photographs. To demonstrate that you can read almost anywhere, students were invited to take a photograph of themselves reading in either their favourite spot or somewhere a little more unusual.

Junior School Drop off/Pick Up Thankyou to all of our parents who have been following our guidelines in relation to dropping off/ picking up students from the College. Your ongoing support is keeping our community safe. NSW Government guidelines stipulate that parents and carers may not enter our campuses unless dropping to Pre-Kindergarten or collecting from PreKindergarten or After School Care.

Furthermore, I would like to remind everyone that supervision commences each morning at 8:25 am.

We encourage you not to drop off your children before this time.

Scots All Saints College - Lithgow Students It has been lovely to welcome so many of our Lithgow students to our campus in recent weeks. Many of our Scots All Saints Lithgow students have trialled our new coach service from Lithgow and joined an experience day with Junior School classes. Our All Saints Campus students have been so friendly and welcoming to these students and it has been great to see them adjust so quickly.

Term Four Active Afternoons Junior School Active Afternoon choices were emailled to parents early this week. After discussing the choices with your child, please complete the Operoo form by Friday 4 September. Active Afternoons are compulsory and all students must elect either a College Core Sport or a noncompetitive sport.

Crazy Sock Day - Friday 4 September On Friday, 4 September 2020 Junior School students can wear crazy socks and donate a gold coin to raise money for Masila, our sponsor child in Kenya. All fathers/grandfathers/special friends are encouraged to wear crazy socks to their place of work on the day too. If you would like to take a photo of your child with their dad/grandfather or special friend you can email it through to your child’s teacher.

Sport Photos - Friday 11 September Winter Sport photos will be taken next Friday 11 September. Students should wear their sport uniform to school as normal along with the following: SOCCER: 2:15 pm. Scots All Saints College netball uniform and socks required.

NETBALL: 3:00 pm. Scots All Saints College soccer uniform and soccer socks required.

Premier’s Reading Challenge and Home Reading Congratulations to all of the Junior School students who completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge this year.

Some students have completed the challenge for the first time whilst others have completed it for four years in a row. This is a great achievement and will see these students awarded with a Gold Certificate at the end of the year. All students who participate will be presented with a certificate at the end of the year.

I’ve also noticed that many students have been participating consistently in our Home Reading Program as well and are now working towards Silver and Gold awards and possibly a badge at the end of the year. This is such a beneficial thing to do and greatly assists each child’s reading development.

Mobile Phone Policy Just a reminder that students are not allowed to use their mobile phones whilst on campus between 8:25 am and 3:20 pm. If a K-6 student needs to bring a mobile phone to school, they are to hand it to their Class or Core teacher where it will be placed in a basket for the day. They need to collect it at the end of the school day.

This also includes watches or wrist devices where students can text or call from. If a student needs to bring either of these devices to school they should be handed into the class teacher at the start of the day.

Happy Father’s Day Normally at this time of year we’d be preparing to host all of our fathers/grandfathers/special friends at our annual Father’s Day Breakfast. Unfortunately, we’re unable to do this this year but I hope that doesn’t stop each one of fathers/ grandfathers from having a special day on Sunday. Happy Father’s Day everyone!

Parent Interviews

R U OK? Day is a national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, “Are you ok?” and support those struggling with everyday life ups and downs. R U OK? Day is signified by the colour yellow and will be celebrated nationally on Thursday 10 September 2020. This is particularly important in 2020 as many people have found the changes imposed by the Covid pandemic very challenging. Next Thursday 10 September we will be supporting R U OK? Day by asking the students to wear yellow to school. I encourage everyone to get behind this day of raising awareness of the importance of checking if your friends are OK..

For the immediate future if a parent needs to speak to a teacher they will be required to have the conversation either via a phone call or via Zoom. We are trying to minimise the amount of people that come onto the Campus and appreciate everyone’s support in keeping the children safe.

New Bus Arrangements We now have the majority of the large buses dropping off and picking up on Eglinton Road. This has vastly improved the traffic flow within the school grounds as well as made it safer for the children. Our introduction of the pedestrian crossing supervisor has also improved the road safety for the children. Thank you to all parents and carers who are driving carefully within the speed limit on campus.

Jeans for Genes Day 2020 Jeans for Genes Day, which was held on Friday 7 August, raised $715.55 for the Children's Medical Research Institute. The Institute uses the funds raised to support their research to save children’s lives. Their research has helped eliminate Rubella, introduced care for premature infants, and developed microsurgery techniques for organ transplants that save lives every day. 1 in 20 kids face a birth defect or genetic disease, and 30% of children’s hospital admissions are due to genetic disorders, so there is still much research to be done.

Congratulations to the incoming 2020-21 Student Leaders This morning Mr Weeks announced the Student Leadership Team for 2020-21. Congratulations to the students appointed to positions of leadership and responsibility. As a College we are blessed to have wonderful students across the Senior School who demonstrate leadership, a sense of community and citizenship every day.

Year 11 Exams Due to logistical reasons, the dates for the upcoming Year 11 exams have been adjusted slightly. Year 11 have been informed of the change & provided with their Examination Timetable. The Year 11 Examination Period will now run from Friday 11 September to Monday 21 September.

Academic Leave must be sought from the Head of Campus for absences not related to illness.

Driving on campus The speed limit on the Scots Campus is strictly 15km/h on all roads and in the top carpark.

Getting to know you... Senior School Teachers encourage those students who perhaps lack confidence in their abilities or find reading and writing more challenging than others. It is important to reassure all students that writing is a skill which can be improved and strengthened over time with the use of specific techniques.

Back when I was in Year 10, taking part in the school work experience program in my hometown of Young, I wanted to be “either a journalist or a teacher”.

The Australian contingent of teachers walked three kilometres to school each day wearing a traditional silk 'kira', which was made by a seamstress when we arrived in the country. There were motivational sayings on every classroom wall at the school and even on the garbage bins in the playground, which all declared: “Readers are Leaders”.

Now Bathurst has become home for myself and my family, it is a privilege to see a sense of enthusiasm and curiosity in my classes at Scots All Saints College.

My goal is to make every student feel welcomed and valued.

Teamwork is our greatest strength.

space to inspire John Farrington had a tenyear career at The Scots School beginning in 1948.

On a later visit he mentioned feeling somewhat abandoned after being left here as a fiveyear old boarder. At that time, Scots took boarders from as early as Year 1. He completed the Leaving Certificate in 1958, having completed six subjects, and attaining colours in Athletics and Swimming.

In 1959, John Farrington travelled to Britain to complete his secondary education, at Cheltenham College in Gloucestershire.

He was a Prefect, and again achieved Colours for Athletics and Cross-Country Running. During his years in England he won the Junior Cross Country Championships and the World Junior Cross Country Championship in Spain.

At the senior level he represented England in Cross Country and Great Britain in athletics as a 3 mile track runner. He was able to do this due to his dual citizenship through his English mother.

After completing his A Levels at Cheltenham, he attended London University, graduating with an Honours Degree in Economics before returning to Australia where he spent most of his working life in university administration at Sydney, Flinders, Macquarie and Adelaide Universities.

That university work was important to his other accomplishments: until 1986, Olympic athletes had to be amateurs.

After finishing his degree he returned to Australia where he quickly became a highly accomplished distance runner on the world stage, winning the Australian Marathon Championships four times the, 10,000 metre track

John Farrington Australian Olympian Munich 1972 Mexico 1968

championship twice and becoming the Australian Cross Country Champion.

He represented Australia at the Mexico Olympics in 1968 and was ranked first in the world for the Marathon in 1973. He represented the ‘Rest of the World’ Track and Field Team against the USA and the Soviet Union and was selected for the Munich Olympics in 1972 but was unable to compete because of injury. He won the Sydney ‘City to Surf’ race, now the World’s biggest fun run, for three consecutive years from 1972 to 1974. Only two others have done that: fellow Australian Steve Moneghetti and Tanzanian Patrick Nyangelo.

With his sporting background, and experience in administration, John Farrington’s expertise was also sought in other areas. He spent three years in Canberra during the Whitlam Years as Director of Sport for the Federal Government, where he was part of initiating plans for the formation of the Australian Institute of Sport, and the government funding of Australian Sports organisations generally.

John Farrington was commemorated at The Scots School with the Farrington Cup that was awarded to the Cross-Country Champions each year. During the Bathurst Bicentennial celebrations, the Junior School painted a figure of him for the Peoplescape exhibition outside the Bathurst Court House. He has occasionally visited the School, including in 2012 when he was Chieftain of the Highland Gathering.

memories from the past

An Interview with Dick Crossing, a boarder at All Saints’ from 1936-1942.

Here are some memories Dick had as a schoolboy: “There was only one small shower room with hot water…we were allowed two or three showers in winter after football training” “There were no windows or blinds on the sides of the dormitories….they were completely open to the elements on both sides” “The headmaster Rev Watson would not allow padlocks…he ran the school on an honesty system” “We were not allowed to receive letters from girls….if a letter came from a girl it was confiscated” “In the apple season on a moonlit night….would organise an ‘apple safari’…four or five would ride their bikes over to Winterbottom’s orchard near Marsden and bring back apples in their pillow cases” “One term we were told we were to go over to Marsden and dig air raid shelters every Sunday… unfortunately the girls were not allowed to go near us….”
