The saying “just keep on keeping on” has been around for a long time.

It’s that turn of phrase often made when things get tough, when our plans are turned upside down or expectations turn to disappointment.

In the face of all those ‘negatives’ we just “keep on keeping on”. It’s a positive mindset and one I like to share with young and old alike. Life is never straight forward; it is full of twists and turns, joy and sadness, success and disappointments. It is a ‘smorgasbord’.

Over the past week or so there has been a lot of discussion in the media about the various restrictions placed upon Year 12 students; end of year celebrations. Yes, indeed, these are important, highly anticipated ‘rites of passage’ and as I write there are a wide range of emotions being expressed about our seeming inability to celebrate such an important milestone for the class of 2020.

'Space for Stories' photo competition

Celebrating National Science Week Last week was National Science Week. Year 4 learnt about forces and how they are used in our lives. Year 4 worked in teams to create a machine that moved an object up an incline and then down safely.

Each group used different strategies to utilise different methods and forces to complete their STEM challenge.

A Growth Mindset Approach to Assessment “This is a test to see if your mission in this life is complete, if you are alive, it isn’t.” ― Richard Bach, Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah (1977) Like all of our Year 12 teachers, I have supervised the students as they sat their HSC Trial Examinations during the past two weeks. I feel that the word 'Trial' is an unfortunate one to use in this context. To me, the word conjures up an image of confrontation, or of an ordeal to be endured. Even in sport, trial games provoke anxiety as players battle for positions within a team.

I would far prefer the examinations being undertaken to be called 'Practice Examinations'. The word 'practice' implies doing something regularly in order to be able to do it better. It does not have the same connotative levels of stress or anxiety. In this frame of reference, the students are attempting papers that approximate the ones they will sit in Term 4, under similar conditions. It is terrific that the papers are being supervised by Mary Smith, the Presiding Officer who will oversee their final examinations – this is additional familiarisation for our students. Finally, students will receive feedback about their performance in each subject with time to consolidate strengths and to address areas for development.

The quote at the beginning of this article comes from a favourite book of my immediate post-school years.

Others of my generation may recognise the author as the same one who wrote the more famous Jonathan Livingston Seagull published in 1970. Living is about learning – we never stop. We practise living every day in order to be able to do it better…every day.

Of course, schools have a special interest in learning – it is our core business after all. Learning in schools takes place, developmentally, over a period of thirteen years. Most students do not like assessment at school; perhaps a change in mindset might shift their perspective. Assessment each year provides continual opportunities for students to practise

accumulating and applying knowledge and honing skills related to each subject being studied. The feedback received is valuable because it allows the student to see what they have mastered, and what they have not mastered…yet…with ample time to do something about it. Knowing what you don’t know about something is powerful knowledge in itself.

According to American psychologist Carol Dweck, any point on the journey of a learner is a starting point for further development. A growth mindset allows one to see challenges as opportunities, rather than obstacles. When the going gets tough, a growth mindset appreciates building one’s capacity to cope. A growth mindset offers the chance to thrive, even when things are difficult (hang on, that’s our world at the moment, isn’t it?).

Within education, a student with a growth mindset welcomes assessment: the task provides challenge to build capacity and the feedback provides valuable guidance for future efforts.

NESA reinforces the importance of assessment as a tool for teaching and learning. There are three assessment approaches that are used formally or informally, individually or together, to better inform future work for the student and the teacher. These approaches dovetail nicely with a growth mindset.

The following is taken from the NESA website, and applies to assessment from K – 12.

• Assessment for learning involves teachers using evidence about students’ knowledge, understanding and skills to inform their teaching. Sometimes referred to as ‘formative assessment’, it usually occurs throughout the teaching and learning process to clarify student learning and understanding.

• Assessment as learning occurs when students are their own assessors. Students monitor their own learning, ask questions and use a range of strategies to decide what they know and can do, and how to use assessment information for new learning.

• Assessment of learning assists teachers in using evidence of student learning to assess achievement against outcomes and standards.

[An example is the current set of 'Practice Tests'.] Assessment of learning allows teachers and students to plan future learning pathways.

COVID Update and Community Sport Another week goes by with more information released about COVID-19 and our responsibilities in regards to community sport. We remind students and parents of these with the information below taken from the restrictions introduced on 19 August

by NSW Health.

Further public health measures are being put in place to minimise the risk of COVID-19 transmission related to participation in community sports.

These updated recommendations will help us to meet the NSW Government’s aim of achieving no community transmission in NSW and will support community sports to continue operating safely. It is essential that community sports organisations have a COVID-19 safety plan​in place, and are fully compliant. For local activities, limit spectators to one parent only, where the child requires parental supervision during the sporting activity. Again, we remind players and parents that we need to abide by the COVID procedures for the local Bathurst community sport associations and take extra care at weekend matches. We are extremely fortunate to be able to have our students playing community based sports and doing our bit by following the protocols and procedures is essential.

Again, we encourage our students and families to follow the directives presented by our local community sports organisations.

Active Afternoons – Summer Season With the summer sports season not too far away, our Heads of Sport are getting plans in place for a transition to the new season. Again, this is going to be more difficult this year than in the past and we will do our best to get things organised and communicate. With the current COVID-19 restrictions which are recommended to go through until the 1 October, we are unlikely to have competitions available with the ISA (1st and 2nd XI cricket, girls touch, tennis) in Term 4.

We are, however, hopeful that we can participate in local community sports competitions to fill this void.

Active Afternoons sport choices have been or will be asked for this week. All students will need to do an Active Afternoon activity. There will again be a wide range of Active Afternoon activities. Please be aware that our Core College Sports will have weekend commitments and along with them additional registration processes and charges. Please be aware that participating in a Core College Sport in NOT compulsory for students. If you or your child are concerned about participating in the current climate with COVID-19 restrictions in local community sports (limited spectators, reduced training sessions, changes to competition structures, potential further restrictions, etc.) then do not sign up for a Core College Sport.

Scots All Saints Swim Academy We have made some more developments with our SASC Swim Academy planning. We have advertised for a Swim Coach to take morning squads. Whilst we have had some applicants, we would welcome our parent body spreading the word to suitably qualified and interested people. Please contact Mr Adams for more information. Enrolments are being taken for the Learn to Swim program and Squad swimming for the Early Spring season (last 3 weeks of Term 3). We are breaking the pre-Christmas season into two. ROAR We anticipate rolling over the learn to swim lessons and squads from Term 3 into Term 4 but feel that with the COVID uncertainty and hopefully a new swim coach to take morning squads having another opportunity to join a program in Term 4 would be advantageous.

We had great numbers (12 students in each) for the Life Guarding and Teacher of Swimming courses which will commence next Tuesday (1 September) Lifeguarding and Friday (4 September) for the teacher of swimming training. We thank the students and parents for their support with this training and wish them well in the training.

Strength and Conditioning Training Opportunities We remind students of the opportunity for Strength and Conditioning training on the Senior Campus in the Hunter Sports Centre. Session 1 is from 3:30 pm to 4:15 pm and Session 2 is from 4:15 pm to 5:00 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Our strength and conditioning coach Luke Newman will welcome new students over the age of 13 years. Please contact Mr Adams for more details. We have nominated Alex Jonker (Year 10) to do online training to become a Corporal. Last weekend Bathurst welcomed the rain and snow as it contributed to the rising levels of Ben Chifley Dam. Whilst the weather was a blessing for so many, it did mean that all Junior Sport was cancelled. This was disappointing for those students absolutely bursting to get out there, but for others it was a chance to relax, throw a snowball or two and rejuvenate themselves for the next match. With only a few more weeks remaining and finals just around the corner, I encourage teams to work cohesively and apply the skills and tactics that their coaches have been working on. Netball Middle School netballers will enjoy a specialised training session this Thursday during their Active Afternoons. Ella Lewis, an experienced Bathurst representative player and coach will work with the defensive players to fine tune and improve their positioning on the court, reflexes, defensive stance and rebounds. Mrs Nelson and Abby McDonald, another representative player and coach, will work with the goal shooters to improve and develop the correct shooting stance and technique and to foster good positioning and movement around the circle. All of the centre court players will work with Mrs Pearce to improve driving to the ball, breaking for the centre pass, offering and clearing techniques. As previously mentioned our Junior School netballers will also enjoy a coaching session with Ella Lewis this Friday during their Active Afternoon. We envisage that all SASC players will gain from these training sessions and take some new skills to the court on Saturday.

Middle School Touch Football competition Approximately 120 Middle School students are involved in the lunch time Touch Football competition. This competition is hotly contested and there has been no shortage of talent out on the field.

Refereeing staff have been so impressed with the skills and attitudes of players right across the age groups.

Regardless of success, relationships are forming within teams and new friendships established which has been wonderful to observe. Students have been asked to take responsibility themselves and note the days that their team is playing. Students can wear their PE uniform to school on the day that they play Touch Football. continued page 7

Year 6 students reflect on the positives in their changing world during COVID-19 times Junior Press Feature – Western Advocate – printed August 28 A key priority at Scots All Saints College is building resilience and wellbeing for the children in our care. Our focus has been to encourage students to remain positive and take strength and support from their teachers, friends and family throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Continuity of learning has played a big role so that children thrive despite the outside influences and restrictions that are often out of their control but they now face as part of their ‘new normal’ at school and in the community.

We know that school is much more than a space to learn but also to feel safe, secure and supported. Scots All Saints is a space for children to feel comfortable, a space where they want to be – to be challenged, feel connected and to be the best they can be.

School is a very social place, so at Scots All Saints we implemented a proactive plan to move to face to face classes earlier than most. We were able to ‘spread out’ across two main campuses in Bathurst and introduce

programs such as ‘Active Afternoons’ where students have a choice of sport including orienteering, Zumba, mountain biking, martial arts with local specialists or can train for their College team winter sport such as, netball, hockey, soccer, rugby within school hours. These programs have enriched the quality of education for our children.

Student wellbeing via Positive Psychology is a focus of learning for all Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 students across the College who participate in programs such as ‘Bounce back’ for Junior School students. These programs help children to ‘look on the bright side’ and see the glass halffull not half-empty, and in turn, they develop the skills to overcome setbacks and build resilience.

Our Year 6 Middle School students have written a persuasive writing piece to reflect on the positives in their changing world during COVID-19 times with some interesting insights…

“I think we can all agree Corona Virus was absolutely and utterly terrible, but after all, home school wasn’t that bad with all the free time did us good even if we were bored and while some businesses flopped, others were a great success and best of all the planet was new and improved. Let’s just agree that Covid-19 is an absolute rollercoaster! “ Milla, Year 6 “Healthcare workers have been risking everything to help us stay safe. It is reassuring to know that so many people are dedicating all their time to keeping us safe. Imagine how dangerous, yet rewarding, their job is.” Luca, Year 6 “Even though COVID-19 has hit, and has hit hard, we can live through this. It doesn’t always have to be hard, COVID is not here to stay.”

Students take part in Merino Wether Challenge Six agriculture students from Year 9 have recently taken part in the Merino Wether Challenge, a statewide competition providing education about sheep and wool production as well as practical hands-on sheep management experience for students.

Victoria Clancy, Matilda Knox, Elspeth Hardy, Jaimie Healy, Sam Neill and Lachlan Thomas made up our Scots All Saints team, travelling to Dubbo in March to participate in a training day and to pick up their seven wethers. Throughout the day, the team attended workshops about different aspects of the Merino industry such as breeding, nutrition and wool classing. Their objective was to halter-train their animals so that they could be judged in a live exhibition, whilst also monitoring their weight-gain and feeding them to maximise the value of their fleece and meat. In addition, students were responsible for creating an A team and a B team from their group of seven to demonstrate their

ability to identify good wool and condition traits and to create a consistent line of animals.

While live judging was out of the question, students instead took photos and videos of their sheep handling skills which were sent away with their wethers to be judged. Their efforts paid off, with the teams placing 8th and 31st overall from a field of over 100 teams across the state. Both teams scored well in the carcase judging, with the A team achieving the highest carcase value from the 37 teams in the Tablelands division. However, our wool value lowered our scores somewhat, which will be the focus of our efforts when participating in the challenge again next year.

A big congratulations to these students for their work and enthusiasm over the past 5 months.

An insight into French Club

By Deliah Wu (Year 7 student) Here at Scots All Saints College, students have the opportunity to participate in French Club which runs every Tuesday from 1:05 pm to 1:50 pm. Because of COVID-19 restrictions we have had 'to think outside the box' as to how we bring our ideas together.

This new way of living has unleashed our creativity, allowing us the time to invest in our very own French network station ‘Bonjour Bathurst’. Thank you to Mrs Barclay for her design work.

In this week’s The Roar you can follow the link to a survey on all the different sports that the middle school children participate in and Mia Rodenhuis keeps us informed on the latest weather. Lots of learning fun for all those involved!

This opportunity allows for students to gain an even richer understanding of the French language and culture. It gives us real purpose and reminds us of what exceptional skills I am acquiring.

I enjoy studying French as it allows me to connect in another way that I haven’t explored before, through studying French videos, grammar and vocabulary.

I think French Club allows us the chance to learn and immerse oneself in French.

Bonjour Bathurst

The first ever TV station in French has been launched by the Middle School students at Scots All Saints Bathurst.

This new program was born out of an ambition to find a way to make French easier to learn, thus we have mitigated intensive study and replaced it with an authentic learning experience. This has been accomplished by creating an avenue for students to use the French language in the everyday. It allows them to rehearse, practice and immerse themselves in French on the go. Moving forward, students will learn to create stories more independently of their own content for their peers. We hope to be able to reach out and include the wider community, enticing all to speak French.

As we evolve into experienced 'correspondents’ more students will be able to be involved in the excitement of making news in French!

Introducing French Writing in Year One Children require lots of support, modelling and repeating of structures when starting to write at any length in French.

Year One were given a selection of familiar words on sticky paper to be arranged into phrases.

The nature of the activity appealed to the children and it was a great way of sharing their understanding and knowledge as to how words need to go together to make sentences in French.

Getting to know you...

Middle School Teachers Mrs Catherine Dundon I am the Year 7 Coordinator and I teach English to Years 7 and 8 on the All Saints’ Campus where I started teaching in 1984. I grew up on a sheep and cattle property in north western NSW so I identify with many of our students who are growing up in a rural area.

My husband, Simon teaches Biology and Science at the Scots Campus and we are both proud parents and grandparents.

In my spare time I enjoy fishing, gardening, reading and travelling. I have been very fortunate to have travelled to many parts of the world to experience diverse flora, fauna, landscapes, history and culture.

Highlights include fly fishing in Alaska, snorkeling with a multitude of turtles at Kicker Rock in the Galapagos Islands, close encounters with moose in Quebec and having a curious baby mountain gorilla play with my ponytail on a trek in Rwanda.

Our world is a rich place to explore and I learnt so much from my teacher exchange to Calgary in Canada in 2010. In Year 1 I wrote ‘When I grow up I want to be a teacher’ and I still love the challenges and rewards of teaching.

Every student is a unique individual with boundless potential and I believe that our school provides rich opportunities to unleash that potential through its genuine focus on student wellbeing. At the heart of my role as an English teacher is my belief in the power of effective communication and the value of reading. A good book can expand your horizons, develop empathy, make you laugh, cry, imagine and ponder possibilities.

Getting to know you... Middle School Teachers Mrs Bronwyn Jackson Visual Arts, in the Middle School is a unique and creative space for every student of all abilities to thrive. This time in a young pupil’s life is vital as they continue to strengthen awareness of their talents and strengths, in conjunction with realising the choices and directions opening up to them in their student journey.

The creative forum of Visual Arts unfolds many opportunities to design and make works which demonstrate art is not always drawing realistically, but can also be conceptual, abstract, intuitive or interactive. They develop a respect for the need to develop techniques through practice and experimentation, which like so many skills in life need repetition and opportunities to fail in an encouraging environment in order to improve and shape their achievements.

It is my goal that every Middle School art student will find an expression of creativity in some form. In the classroom we engage in many expressive forms, including sculpture, photography, charcoal and ink drawing, collage, simple printmaking, installation works and painting. This is aligned with learning about contemporary and historical artists as well as movements that have shaped the art world.

Exhibiting the artworks created by our students is an important part of the whole art experience here at Scots All Saints, where works are regularly displayed on the Art room veranda, the library, the clinic and the College office spaces.

Since COVID 19 an online virtual Gallery has been launched on the College website for a wider audience to access. Take a look at the SASC Virtual Gallery here.

My love of teaching and the Visual Arts goes back through my family generations, with miniature portrait artists, sculptors and photographers in my heritage. However, it wasn’t until my own experiences in Senior High School art classes where a spark for teaching began. I saw how my art teacher could inspire, encourage, demonstrate, expand minds, challenge ideas and impart generously his knowledge and understanding. It was this positive and inspiring role model, along with my family’s history, that paved the way for this wonderful and fulfilling career of which I love. I aspire daily to meet the values I saw in my teacher and to reflect my Christian faith.

Mr Hugh Hunter I love my time at Scots All Saints College working in the Middle School. I enjoy the freedom to create lessons that are engaging and effective for students. I also enjoy evolving through excellent professional development and sharing expertise with knowledgeable, experienced colleagues.

My subject areas include History and English. The study of History is important because it allows students to understand the past, which in turn helps them to understand their world. History provides insight into cultures of origin as well as cultures with which they might be less familiar, thereby increasing cross-cultural awareness and understanding.

I am delighted to be teaching English which enables students to think creatively and critically.

The ability to think creatively and critically are essential skills for any career path.

As well as teaching the subject areas of History and English, I enjoy guiding students to becoming problem-solvers, critical thinkers and global citizens. I feel it is an important part of a student’s education to be prepared for a world where they can contribute positively to society.

The best part of my day is coming to school and interacting with students, finding out about their lives and helping them experience success.

Stage One - The Old Bathurstians’ Museum located in Esrom House All Saints Campus is open for business!

The museum curator, Tim Sargeant, a former student of All Saints’ College has put many hours and prized memorabilia into the Stage One of the Old Bathurstians’ Museum located in Esrom House.

The first stage is The Watson Room which houses numerous trophies, documents, badges, citations, photographs and records from early days of both All Saints’ and Marsden School.

There is even the ‘Lawyer’, a cane, placed in one of the cabinets which is there to remind some of the more senior All Saints’ ex-students of the discipline methods used during their time at school! Much of the memorabilia was collected, refurbished and carefully displayed by Tim and a plaque has been placed in the Museum in recognition for his wonderful contribution and continues to make.

of historical images which are the work of Di Colman, an ex-student of Marsden School.

We would like to encourage any past students to visit our museum (post Covid-19 when we are back to normal) or to contact us if they believe they may have something of significance that could be held in our archives. We are in the process of digitalising as many of the photos we have here so that we have a permanent record and all attempts are being made to record dates and names accurately.

Orange Meet and Greet It was an enjoyable evening of good food and good conversation for the families who joined Head of College, Mr John Weeks and the Senior Leadership team for an informal ‘Meet & Greet’ at the Nile Street Café in Orange.

New parents and students considering the College were welcomed along with some of loyal local families who shared their experiences. Mr John Weeks delivered a brief talk about the challenges placed on the school and our students during COVID-19 and the many lessons the pandemic is teaching us all including how to overcome setbacks and to carry on as best we can.

This is a valuable lesson for our students to develop a ‘growth mindset’ so they can look to ‘find another way’ when something out of their control appears to be a barrier. Often the ‘other way’ they discover can also be ‘a better way’ so many positives can be reframed from an initial setback. These evenings continue to demonstrate the wonderful College community we have here at Scots All Saints. Further ‘Meet & Greet’ events for prospective and current parents are planned for regional areas across NSW in the coming weeks within COVID-19 restrictions.

COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe It has been a little over a week, since the NSW Government imposed new restrictions on schools as the result of COVID-19. This has impacted a number of our programs directly that involve visitors, parents and contractors attending the school that are not directly linked to the curriculum.

Fortunately, we have been able to make suitable arrangements for some activities such as, individual music lessons and Speech and Drama to continue off campus within the guidelines so programs continue as best they can for now. We are hopeful, that these new measures are only temporary so we may be able to resume these programs once again.

Our priority remains to provide a quality academic and co-curricular program within the NSW Health guidelines. Thank you to our wonderful staff, students and parents who have co-operated very swiftly, taking all of the necessary precautions to keep our College community and indeed, the wider community safe. We are fortunate to live in a region that hasn’t had a case of COVID-19 diagnosed for an extended period of time. As a community, we owe it to ourselves to make personal choices about limiting travel outside the region and abiding by the guidelines to keep our College, town and region coronavirus-free.

We continue to monitor the recommendations and evaluate our activities to ensure that we are meeting the NSW Pubic Health orders while also providing our students with the best academic and co-curricular program possible.

We’ve had a parent enquiry with regards to COVID-19 hotspots as defined in our COVID-19 Health and Safety Protocol for staff and students. To clarify, when you follow the link provided: https://www.nsw. gov.au/covid-19/latest-news-and-updates and scroll down to ‘Latest case locations in NSW’, you will note that rather than ‘hotspot’, there are now three different categories for areas of concern. These categories are: 1. Areas and Suburbs with increased testing 2. Self-Isolate and get tested immediately if you’ve been to these locations 3. Monitor for Symptoms if you’ve been to these locations Where our protocol states; Staff, Students and Parents/ Carers who have been in Victoria or any other identified COVID-19 hotspots/ areas of concern must not enter the Scots All Saints College Campuses until 14 days after they have returned from their travel.

We are referring to ‘hotspots’ as the locations listed in Category 2 – Self-isolate and get tested immediately if you’ve been to these locations. “Areas of concern” are any other areas that NSW Health flags within its news and updates including areas outside of NSW and areas within NSW if not already assigned to either category as per above.

We acknowledge that some families are required to travel to the locations listed in Categories 1 and 3 for work, medical appointments and other essential activities. continued page 16

Whilst we would implore you not to travel to these areas unless for essential travel, it is not our intention to exclude children from school because they or a family member has had to visit those areas. However, we ask that if you must visit the areas in Categories 1 and 3 that you exercise extreme caution in monitoring and getting tested if you have even the slightest of symptoms.

Plain navy facemasks are permitted as an optional part of the College uniform to be worn to and from school or on campus as needed. There is a supply of facemasks available for purchase from the uniform shop, these can be purchased online and shipped or collected by students.

Noone Uniform Shop Update The Uniform Shop will continue to operate during its usual hours Monday 8:00 am – 2:00 pm / Wednesday 12 noon to 4:00 pm / Friday 8:00 am – 2:00 pm All Saints Campus students are permitted to enter the Uniform Shop at recess and lunch to collect the orders placed by their parent/guardian during these times.
