Congratulations to Tyler Puzicha, Year 12, who won the silver medal for the Team Sprint at the Junior Track World Championships in Tel Aviv, Israel. The Australian team also broke an Australian record in the process. What an amazing achievement, and the culmination of many years of hard work and training by Tyler, with the support of her family. Tyler is competing in more events in Tel Aviv, so we look forward to seeing how she goes.

Great Year 8 Bible Stories This term, the Year 8 Christian Studies classes have been working on class talks. Students, individually or in groups, had to find a New Testament story about Jesus and re-write it as if they were an eyewitness. Talks were presented in class, with a few selected to be presented in Middle School Chapel.

There was a wide selection of stories that were shared, including Simon Peter walking on water, feeding of the crowd of 5000 people, the woman anointing Jesus with oil and tears, the nativity, and the like. Probably the most popular story that students gravitated to was Jesus calming the storm (Mark 4:35-41). You might remember it: Jesus had been speaking to a great crowd of people before he and the disciples sailed towards the other side of Lake Galilee (several kilometres away). As the disciples set sail, Jesus fell asleep on the disciples' coats in the stern.

Students, with great acting and animation, then told the story of what happened next, when a storm hit, and the disciples thought they were going to capsize and die.

Years ago, I filmed a fishing television program on that lake titled: The Bishop, The Chef, & the Fisherman, on the very same lake that this story occurred – Lake Galilee. One morning, we were in the middle of the lake, and we were waiting for a bite when our Israeli guides received a radio call from the Mediterranean weather bureau stating that Lake Galilee was about to be hit by strong winds. Our guides told me that we had to get off the water immediately. I objected since you can't create a fishing program without catching fish! But they didn't take no for an answer, and they put the boat on full throttle and raced to the shore. As we approached the shore, a strong wind hit the lake and created a large chop with surprisingly large waves. I was glad we had come in!

For Jesus and the disciples, this is exactly what happened at night time, and they were sitting in a 1st-century wooden boat. The hull would have filled up with water, rendering the rudder useless.

As the students told the story, their characters turned to Jesus for help. They woke him up, terrified that they were going to die, and Jesus responded by 'rebuking' the wind and the waves. The voice that spoke creation into being (Genesis 1) is the same voice that tells it to settle down and be quiet. The students' characters had a variety of responses at the end of the story – some celebrated, others just got on with the trip, and some were confused. The gospel writer Mark states that the disciples became afraid of Jesus, saying, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him?”

That idea is a question that we all should ponder, “Who is this?” As C.S. Lewis highlights in his writing, Jesus is either a liar, lunatic or Lord. If you ever would like to discuss this question with me, please contact me for a coffee, and we can explore the character and nature of Jesus further. Amen.

Year 7 and 8 Reading Challenge 2022 GAIN HOUSE POINTS AND WIN CAFÉ VOUCHERS FOR YOUR WIDE READING Great writers read, and great readers are better writers. Year 7 and Year 8 students will use at least ONE English lesson per week to establish a reading routine. Not only will this build better readers with greater confidence, but there is also an opportunity to contribute to your House’s competition points and win some prizes – see below.

Between now and the end of the year, your Year 7 or Year 8 English teacher will take you to the library for reading lessons once per week. These lessons will require you to do the following: • Choose a NOVEL or a NON FICTION text from our library, or bring a book from home to read during the lessons • You must REGISTER your book with your English teacher, who will keep a record • You will read this book, and you will also borrow the book from the library to read at home or in the boarding house • When complete, you are to upload (to Canvas in the assigned space) a 200-word summary of the book and describe ONE key character from the novel.

• You must have EVIDENCE that you have read the book; this will include your classroom teacher observing your reading during lessons and a written statement signed by a parent of boarding house staff. Both the summary and the evidence must be uploaded prior to borrowing a second book.

Note – Students in 9-12 can also contribute to House points by nominating their wide reading texts, though prizes are only for students in Years 7 and 8.

Every book will contribute a POINT toward the HOUSE CHAMPIONSHIP. 1. Completion of TWO books by Week 4 Term 4 will receive a $5 Cafe Voucher and acknowledgement in The Roar - 4 November.

2. Completion of FOUR books will receive a $10 gift voucher from Book Plus in Bathurst, plus a reading award from English and acknowledgement in The Roar - Week 6 of Term 4 - 18 November.

Book Week This week has been all about books and encouraging children to read. The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has been leading the charge with Book Week since 1945. The theme for this year’s Book Week is “Dreaming with Eyes Open”.

Father’s Day Breakfast Our Prep and Kindergarten dads are invited to a breakfast on Friday, 2 September at 8:00 am to celebrate Father’s Day. The food will be served in the Prep play area. RSVP is via Operoo.

Assemblies this Term Parents and carers are most welcome to our K to 6 Assembly in the Kemmis Building every Week B beginning at 9:00 am.

Junior School

As I write this, the students and staff are organising their fancy dress costumes for the parade that is today, Thursday, 25 August, at 2:30 pm.

We have been encouraging the students to ensure that they read every night this week. If, as a whole Junior School, the students record 600 nights of reading, then Mr Roohan and I will wear our favourite book character’s costume for the whole day next Monday.

Infants Strings Concert Last Wednesday evening, I had the pleasure of attending the Infants Strings Concert in the Junior School Music Centre. The variety of opportunities available to the students at Scots All Saints to pursue their passions is what makes our school so strong. I was amazed at the confidence and enthusiasm to perform from many of our youngest musicians.

Congratulations to the students and their highly skilled and patient music teachers. The young music students should be very proud of their progress and performance in front of an audience of adults and their peers.

Eisteddfod It has been a busy week for Scots All Saints at the Bathurst Eisteddfod. A big thank you to all of the parents who went along and supported the children at the Eisteddfod. It was a significant event for the students to be on the big stage, and they represented the school tremendously well.

Peer Support In Week 4, we finalised our Peer Support program for 2022. It has been terrific to see the positive relationships develop between the students of all ages in the Junior School, and Mr Hunter and I have been impressed with the leadership and responsibility shown by the Year 6 students as they shared the important message of no-bullying at our school.

Year 6 Fun Day Year 6 is a great year to embrace all the leadership opportunities available at the College, and our current Year 6 are planning to bring their latest idea to fruition!

In Term 2, our Year 6 Leadership Team went to a HICES leadership day in Sydney and brainstormed the idea of running a Junior School Fun Day to give the Junior School students something fun to do and to raise money for their Valedictory Dinner in Term 4.

been planning lots of fun activities, including hair spray and temporary tattoo stands, drink and lolly stands, a haunted house, games and water balloon activities. More details to come for our Junior School families, and the students will start to see posters around the school advertising the day.

Stage 3 Inter House Debating In Week 7, we will complete our second and final round of Stage 3 Inter-house debating. For Round 2, many House teams are swapping roles in speaking, and most students feel more confident debating now they have seen how it works. We look forward to sharing the House winner and our best debaters in Year 5 and Year 6. The second round of debating will be held on Friday, 2 September.

3:30 pm. Straight after school. Almost every afternoon I hear this ‘Thud. Thud. Thud’.

Now this is impressive. Miller Rivett. Mudgee. Last weekend.

You could set your watch to it.

Miller crushed the Wilpinjong 10km Fun Run, winning the 16 – 19 Male category with a time of 33:08.

That ain’t no typo.

‘Thud. Thud. Thud’ It’s the sound of a netball banging against the outside wall of my office – hundreds of times. Probably thousands!

On the other side of the wall is Mia Baggett. A Year 12 student and a netballer.

This Winter, Mia has spent countless hours in our Senior School Sports Centre. Practising. Throwing that netball against my office wall. Shooting. Working on her footwork. Refining. Improving. Working hard. It’s been really impressive to witness.

I always make an effort to stop and have a quick chat with Mia.

Eyewitnesses report the second place runner finished in a thick cloud of dust.

I remember one time I did 10km in 33.08 minutes – my car is awesome!

HICES Athletics This is a story for another time.

Tears. Triumph. This adventure has it all.

“What’s next?” I often ask.

“The CIS trials” has been Mia’s answer all year.

It’s one thing to have a goal to work towards – most folks don’t even have that.

It’s completely different to verbalise your goal and put it out there in the universe for others to know – kind of brave, I think.

Year 8 study Dutch Golden age and the Old Masters Year 8 recently finished studying a unit in art focusing on the Dutch Golden age and the Old Masters. We looked at how they used objects to symbolise life’s achievements and follies as well as ‘ones impending doom!’.

One reoccurring symbol was the skull, constantly popping up in paintings overtly and subvert, even sometimes subliminally. We took this genre into the clay studio with every Year 8 student tasked to create a skull form. Some took this further with elaborate decorations or characteristic additions.

Skulls were hand formed and then glaze applied for the glossy and colourful finishes. In true vanitas form, some skulls did not survive the firing, a peril of the medium, however to all Year 8 congratulations on a super successful term of work.

From the All Saints' College archives

THE MERGE - FIVE YEARS AGO It will be five years on the 29 August when simultaneous meetings were called at 3:30 pm for the staff of both The Scots School and All Saints’ College. At All Saints’, the Bishop of the Bathurst Diocese, Ian Palmer addressed the staff. At Scots, where the annual Athletics Carnival had just ended, the Presbyterian Church in New South Wales General Manager, Jeof Falls, spoke to the Scots staff. It was announced that the Bishop and Council had accepted an offer from the Presbyterian Church to buy All Saints’ College.

The existence of small country boarding schools has long been precarious, as history has shown with many similar single sex schools moving to become co-educational all over the country. Marsden School for Girls merged with All Saints’ in 1977, Wolaroi Methodist Boys school and Kinross Presbyterian Ladies College Orange became Kinross in 1975, and Scots became co-educational in 1997. These schools were among the many other institutions which struggled to survive on their own as single sex boarding schools throughout the country. All Saints’ closed between 1919 and 1923 due to a drop in numbers as both teachers and students had joined the forces in WW1. In the same period, the Presbyterian Cooerwull Academy had closed and did not re-open, whereas the Rev. Lindsay Watson and Mr Cameron McLeod purchased Esrom house and re-opened All Saints’ in 1923 as a boys’ boarding school.

The Scots School began in 1942 as a country-based Scots College Branch boarding school and in 1946 became The Scots School Bathurst, no longer a branch of the Sydneybased Scots College. Over the next half century, Scots faced closure when enrolments dropped, but it managed to survive economic crises, as did All Saints’. There were frequent discussions between both schools’ governing bodies as to the possibility of buy outs or integration, as seen in archive letters and proposals to create a larger, more economically sustainable school by joining forces and merging the two.

It was not until a financial crisis in the Bathurst Diocese that resulted in early 2016 that the Supreme Court ordered the Anglican Church to sell off some of its properties to pay off a debt to the Commonwealth Bank. Over the next year, there was much speculation about offers to buy All Saints’ College, all of which came to an end on 29 August 2017, when the Presbyterian Church purchase was announced.

Contracts for the purchase were exchanged on 24 November, and settlement occurred on 19 December, with formal ownership beginning in January 2018.

The Presbyterian Church continued to run All Saints’ and Scots as separate institutions for 2018, which provided a plan for the integration of the two schools with some classes in Year 11 taking cross-campus lessons. At the Spring Fair in September 2018, Scots All Saints College was officially inaugurated. During that year, working groups were set up to plan the new school that was eventually named Scots All Saints College. These groups, led by Mr John Weeks, worked tirelessly planning the way the two campuses would be used, packing up and relocating resources, policy writing, timetabling, upgrading facilities, and all the other administrative tasks needed to operate the new school. Finally, the task of dealing with the people-the school community, the families of both schools, the staff and the students was perhaps the most difficult of tasks for the new governors to address. Over the next four years, challenges have been met, changes have been made, concerns addressed, problems managed, and fears allayed, and it can be said by many that the merge has successfully made the new Scots All Saints College, “A space to explore, learn and grow, preparing students for an ever changing world”.
