COVID-19 and possible increased restrictions As we are all aware, NSW Health advice is being rapidly updated as the COVID-19 virus spreads. This has seen many regional and rural communities facing short-term increased restrictions.

The speed with which this seems to occur and the timing presents challenges to all families, businesses and planned arrangements. These temporary interruptions, as frustrating and annoying as they are, have so far minimized and protected the community from significant harm.

Book Week

Book Week activities will be in full swing for Junior and Middle School students.

Schools are all part of this and as we are all learning, this Delta strain of the virus is different and therefore how we behaved in the 2020 outbreak is now somewhat redundant.

The College Leadership Team has been working with the staff to prepare for the possibility of increased restrictions. How we continue to deliver education to day and boarding students will depend entirely on the nature of these restrictions, which have been different from lockdown to lockdown.

Should increased restrictions be announced for Bathurst, we are ready to respond.

We will communicate these plans via our usual communication links as quickly as possible.

It is important to note that the statement ‘lock down’, which is very emotive, has many different meanings and when this is announced, it takes some time to get the term ‘lock down’ clarified for so many operations.

As I look out my office window, happy smiling faces are arriving at school. The ‘here and now’ is as usual… but we are ready to act swiftly if so directed.

Was Jesus an ordinary man?

I have been asked this question by several students and parents this week: Was Jesus an ordinary man?

To answer the question, you have to think about how an individual measures the 'extra-ordinary' in another person. For me, I have a relatively low standard for extraordinary, it’s when a person rises out of their own personal concerns and starts to see and care for the needs of others – that is extraordinary! However, I can appreciate that this is a little too simplistic for some. In recent weeks, the media has been using the word to celebrate the efforts of our Olympic champions. Extraordinary people who have competed, broken records and won medals. Their physical achievements were truly extraordinary.

The theologian and author of the Narnia Chronicles, C. S. Lewis, addressed this question is his book Mere Christianity. He said, when you read about the life of Jesus and evaluate what he taught, and who he claimed to be, you have to come to one of three conclusions – he was either a lunatic, a liar, or Lord. I would encourage anyone who is looking for more than what our culture currently offers to investigate the Lordship, Love and Life that Jesus offers by reading one of the four Gospels.

Amen.

Have a boarder over for the weekend

Historically, I think most of us would agree that extraordinary men and women are those who have shaped humanity's future for good. Their stories inspire us to do good ourselves, and generally we name a gym, school, hospital, building or write a biography about them – William Wilberforce, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr, Gandhi, Joan of Arc and Fabiola, the fourth-century Roman woman who set up the first civilian hospital, to name but a few.

So where does that leave Jesus? It is interesting that all the above-mentioned historic figures use Jesus as a reference point in history. They are not the only ones. There are currently 2.4 billion Christians who believe that 2000 years ago, Jesus, the Son of God, entered into the world to give us an eternal future. There are 1.8 billion Muslims who believe that he was a prophet second only to Muhammad. Another billion or so Hindus claim that the Nazarene was a divine being. At the heart of the question is not whether Jesus is an ordinary man, (as the opinions of two-thirds of the world’s population clearly answer that for us), but rather was he an ordinary mortal man?

As a result of COVID-19 restrictions our boarding students have not been able to get out and about as they usually do, going on day trips to Sydney or exploring our region.

If your child or family are friends with a boarder, we encourage you to think about having them over for a weekend to help them get off site.

Junior School Mr Anthony Roohan Director of Junior School

Junior School students enjoyed their green and gold day last week in support of the Australian Olympic team. The Junior School was a sea of colour as we celebrated the achievements and hard work of all our Olympians.

Life Education Students have enjoyed a visit from Healthy Harold and the Life Education team this week.

Life Education provides age appropriate programs that aim to provide the information, understanding, skills and strategies students require to make safe decisions about their own health and well-being.

Seussical The Musical Unfortunately, our Creative Arts committee made the difficult decision to postpone our Junior School musical until 2022. With the prospect of being able to perform in front of a live audience looking increasingly unlikely, we decided it was best to put Seussical on hold until next year. The good news is, our committee has been working hard on alternative ideas to celebrate the ‘creative arts’ and we’re hoping to be able to start working on this soon with our students.

ICAS Competitions Recently, students from Years 2 to Year 8 were invited to participate in the ICAS Mathematics, English and Science competitions. The competitions are quite challenging and are designed to assess higher order and problem-solving skills. The first competition will be held next week.

Book Week- old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds Each year since 1945, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has brought children and books together across Australia through Book Week. During this time, schools and public libraries spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children’s authors and illustrators. Our librarians are eagerly planning activities to celebrate Book Week in Week 7. K-2 students can come dressed as their favourite Book character on Monday 23 August, whilst Stage 2 students can dress as their favourite Book character on Wednesday 2 August. Prep classes have been assigned different days.

We’ll also be running our annual Book Fair at this time. As parents will be unable to visit the Book Fair in person, students will be completing a wish list in library lessons next week. Parents and caregivers can either send the money in with students or can pay online use the Book Fairs Payment Portal online at scholastic.com.au/payment Please refer to the Book Week Flyers for further details.

Prep Eucalypt have enjoyed using our Promethean board to form letters and shapes this week. On Thursday, we visited the Innovation Centre to work on Lego creations. We can now follow step by step card instructions to create animals, buildings and people. In class, the creativity is flowing with large intricate marble runs built, it is fantastic to see the team work continue to grow!

Weekend Sport We are very fortunate in Bathurst to be able to participate in our weekend sport competitions whilst many parts of the state are in lockdown. Thank you to all of our families who have been adhering to the local sporting association COVID-19 Safety Plan protocols.

The continuation of these activities is obviously dependent on everyone doing the right thing.

Covid-19 Protocols for Visitors on Campus Grounds As a reminder; • Parents and carers must wear a face mask if they have exited their vehicle and sign in using the Covid Safe QR code.

• QR check in points will be located near the Prep gate and out the front of Esrom House.

• Parents should not be entering classrooms during the school day.

Stage 3 Developing a sense of community at school As students move through schooling from junior grades and into Middle and Senior school, it can seem like there isn’t as much emphasis placed on making school ‘fun’. Studies have shown that enjoyment is important in the school environment as it promotes a sense of harmony and feeling safe. Enjoyment creates a community and gives our students a sense of belonging. A positive school community which is inclusive and caring encourages students to meet the school’s expectations and standards of behaviour, which links back to enjoyment at school for all our students.

We plan many activities and events throughout the year for the students and our recent Green and Gold day on Campus West provided them with a fun chance to build their community. Our clothing supported our Australian Olympians and Stage 3 students joined

Stage 4 Year 8 have been considering future goals in their recent selection of electives for next year, where they can pursue some of their personal interests and passions. While the students continue to focus on concepts of Perseverance and Goal Setting in their Core classes, what better role models can they have than our Australian Olympians. These are individuals who have passion, pride, and perseverance. They have not allowed obstacles to make them lose focus on opportunities. There is so much to learn from the spirit of The Olympics, not least from the message, “You don’t have to be amazing to start but you need to start to be amazing.”

education calendar, the AMC was the first competition of its kind in Australia and is now one of the largest of its type in the world. More than 30 countries participate each year. The competition aims to be accessible to all students from years 3 to 12, not just the mathematically gifted. There is an emphasis on problem solving, a valuable life skill, and the questions are designed to be fun for the student.

At this week’s Stage Meeting, Stage 4 students were also inspired by a speech made by the University of Texas alumnus Admiral William H. McRaven, who used his Navy SEAL training and experience to encourage students. His advice acknowledges the truth that each individual student has the power to change the world if they follow some simple steps.

These include beginning each day by completing a simple task well, measuring a person by the size of their heart, accepting that life doesn’t always seem fair, and being courageous in the face of opposition.

He finishes with these words: “take some risks, step up when the times are toughest, face down the bullies, lift up the downtrodden and never, ever give up — if you do these things, then the next generation and the generations that follow will live in a world far better than the one we have today.”

It has been great to see everyone enjoying the sunshine this week with some trees covered in early blossoms. With Spring approaching, Stage 4 students have also welcomed the addition of two beautiful calves to the West (Saints) Campus. It has been rewarding to see the interest and commitment of many students who have embraced the opportunity to care for the calves.

Senior School Mr Andrew Weeding Deputy Head P-12/ Head of Senior School

I always find the half-way point of a term an opportune time to do some housekeeping. In particular, I force myself to clear the ‘to do’ list, especially those jobs that keep falling to the bottom of the list, clearing the ‘non urgent’ emails and organizing my desk to file those documents that have been building up. This acts as my personal refresh button so I am ready for the weeks ahead. I also encourage the students to do the same. At this mid-way point of the term, it is important to take a moment to evaluate the weeks that have passed. Is work up to date? Have notes for each subject been completed? Has a study routine been established?

Are the goals that were set at the beginning of the term being achieved? It is very easy to let the weeks drift away and all of a sudden, the term is over. I encourage everyone to take some time this weekend to evaluate the weeks that have passed and re-set for the weeks to come, especially with so many assessments looming.

Congratulations to Year 12 on the way they have approached their Trial exams. They have gone about them in a calm and confident manner.

Stage 5 As the Olympics have come to a close, it has been easy to find inspiration in Australia’s amazing athletes. However, I would like and encourage those in our community to take inspiration from our amazing students. There have been a number of achievements over the past few weeks and I would like to take some time to congratulate a few of them. Ella Kay won a position on the Bathurst Youth Council and had her introduction and first meeting this week. She said the group was really energetic and passionate and their initiate focus will be Earth

day and Random Acts of Kindness Week. While Year 12 are sitting trial examinations, Music and Drama students had their performances last week. A huge thank you from the staff and Year 12 students to Alex Morrisey, Isabel Randal and Charlotte Bertwistle for helping the Drama HSC showcase and Isabel Randel and Luke Woodhead for their wonderful efforts with the music pieces. Well done to Hannah Stanmore who had an amazing time on work experience at Shoalhaven Zoo. She was taught many skills in looking after animals and working alongside adults with all different roles in the zoo.

With a suggestion from Mr Gilmer and Reverend Bennett, Year 10 will be participating in the 40 hour famine Fundraiser event. This will tie into their Geography unit, which is currently focusing on Human Wellbeing. The students will be asked to raise money for giving up food for 40 hours on the 29-30 August.

They will also be participating in putting together food parcels/boxes for ‘singles’, ‘couples’ and ‘families’ in need during the school day on the 30 August. These will be distributed by the Hope Charity. On Tuesday 31, Year 10 will have a slightly different Chapel service with a festive celebration to end the 40 hours.

Thank you to all the Year 10 students and their parents for submitting their subject selections for Year 11 on time. This is as exciting time as they can see a glimpse of how their senior education will look.

As the winter weather leaves us behind, we look forward to warmer days and more outdoor activity. In these uncertain times, being active and enjoying the social benefits of sport is more important than ever.

All students are encouraged to consider their participation in the summer sports program with many opportunities to represent the College.

From the P and F Mrs Gemma Green P and F Vice President

As many of you may have suspected, the inaugural Spring Gathering for the College has been cancelled for this year. It was due to be held on Father’s Day Sunday, 5 September.

The P and F have endeavoured to communicate and reach out to parents over the past three months, encouraging them to connect on SignUp, an app for this and other P and F events.

Communication was through handouts direct to students, The Roar, and the College Facebook page. The response was underwhelming. The P and F created a Critical Date Strategy for the Spring Gathering event and, with none of the required boxes ticked it was unanimously decided on Friday July 16 that the event would be cancelled for this year. And in light of where we are at now in relation to COVID-19 – chances are we would have had to cancel this anyway.

Our thanks to all the twelve parents who volunteered themselves for the Year Group Helper role. We are grateful to have these names on the list in readiness for next year's event. We will be in touch to seek out your ideas in due course! Thanks also to Michaela Barclay, the College representative supporting the P and F. We greatly appreciate your time and efforts with us!

So yes, this, along with so many other events cancelled, is disappointing and enlightening at the same time. The P and F appreciate that many families in our College community are going through many different experiences. Looking after the safety and security of their own families, concerns of loved ones in locked down areas, grateful of where we live and work, being supportive of those vulnerable in our community.

There is a lot going on.

From the P and F’s perspective, we feel this is an opportunity for exploration and a reset, so that we can truly thrive in times of extremes as a community. We will be sending out a Parent Survey to all parents before the end of the term and we would love to hear of your thoughts and ideas around the P and F. What would you like to experience? Is the P and F valid to you? What do you see our role to be? How do you wish to be communicated with? Do you feel alignment with the current aims and purpose of the P and F? Adaptability and resilience are characteristics we are currently seeing in aspects of society. Those who adapt, evolve and grow – not only survive, they thrive!

Our intention as a P and F is to do the same.

Remember, all parents of the College are members of the P and F, we would truly value your thoughts and feedback of any kind.

All Things Sport Mr Mark Wilkinson Sports Administrator

[Sniffing sounds] Can you smell something? I can!

It smells like sunscreen, and Aerogard, and chlorine.

That means Summer is on the way, people!

Our Winter sports seasons are quickly approaching finals time with a ton of SASC teams still in contention for fame and fortune (and by fortune I mean a cool trophy).

We’ll start shifting our focus to planning our summer sports. We’re just about to send out information for Summer Sports Choices. Senior School students will receive a link to a Google Form while Junior and Middle School families will be sent one on Operoo. In terms of our competitive core sports (cricket, touch and basketball), obviously things are still up in the air with the ongoing COVID-19 situation. Our regular ISA seasons are unlikely to get started anytime soon. However we are in talks with our friends at St Stanislaus College and Kinross Wolaroi School to see if we can create some ‘Central West Bubbles’ and give our students an opportunity to compete. “We’ll bring you more on that developing story later”, said Mark in his Sandra Sully voice.

Our Junior and Middle School sports photos are coming up at the end of August.

Middle School – Thursday 26 August Junior School – Friday 27 August Any student competing in a sport for the College this Winter season (netball, soccer and rugby) will need to bring their playing uniform to school on that day. Our hockey teams have already completed their team photos.

WRAS Indigenous Talent ID WRAS is currently developing a Talent ID program for students of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island descent and are looking to run a Talent ID day in October. The program is designed for participants wishing to advance their opportunities in sport. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Talent ID Day will be the ‘first of its kind’ where WRAS will develop a sporting platform for athletes to be identified in multiple sports. Those identified will be offered the opportunity to advance to fully funded scholarship positions with WRAS Scholarship programs.

Talent ID day is an attempt to identify people with specific skills, personal qualities and physical attributes that may lead that person to become a high performing athlete. It is much more than just assessing a person’s physical capabilities, it includes the emotional side of performance, aspects like; desire, determination and resilience.

If you’re interested in finding out more details, just send me an email (mark.wilkinson@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au) As you know, the Olympics have come and gone. Australia kicked butt with our equal best Olympic performance ever, finishing sixth on the medal tally with 17 Golds.

I got a little nerdy and worked out the ‘medals per capita’.

That’s a fancy way of saying ‘how many Aussies does it take to win an Olympic medal’. This always shows how awesome we really are compared to the countries who finished above Australia on the overall tally.

You could make the argument that Scots All Saints is Australia. We’re a super young school that bats well above our average when we compete against much bigger schools that have been around for donkey’s years.

When this whole COVID-19 malarkey comes to an end, the thing I’m looking forward to the most is firing up the SASC bus and heading off to a representative carnival to watch our students continue to be big fish in a big pond. I can’t wait!

CBCA Book Week 2021: 21 - 27 August With Book Week now only two weeks away, it is time to start thinking about costumes in preparation for our celebrations! This year theme is ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’.

Monday 23 August – Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2

Tuesday 24 August – Prep classes

Wednesday 25 August – Years 3 and 4 Dress up as your favourite book character to participate in our CBCA Picture Book Escape Room – Years 5 and 6 Dress up as your favourite book character in readiness for our CBCA Book Trailer Premiere

A reminder that we will be holding a Scholastic Book Fair again, but as parents are unable to visit the school in person, students will be compiling a wish list during library classes next week.

• The students will preview books and complete wish lists with teacher assistance, and children will take them home.

• Parents decide if and what they would like to purchase, pay by Credit Card online directly to Scholastic Book Fairs and note receipt number on wish list OR return wish list with cash payment. To minimise change given to students, please try to include the correct amount.

HISTORICAL GATES

Marsden gates.

Campus West (Saints) front gates.

There are three sets of gates on the All Saints’ Campus (West) and each set has permanent historical significance in the history of the school. The gates at the front of the heritage building, Esrom House, came from the 'School on the Hill’ and were located and purchased by the Hallstrom family and the ASC Parents’ and Friends’ Association at an auction held in Bathurst. The Hallstroms have been part of the school family for many years and all three children attended All Saints’. Both Peter and Louise Hallstrom contributed to the school in many ways, as they were actively involved in the ASC P&F and the ASC Foundation. Originally, the gates were situated in front of the School on the Hill where the first permanent school building was erected in 1875. That building was located where Bathurst High School now stands. The gates were refurbished and erected in front of the circular driveway to Esrom House in 2009.

Another set of gates is the Marsden Gates, which was dismantled by the All Saints’ Old Bathurstians’ 2010, moved from the original entrance to Marsden School, re-furbished and re-erected outside the Marsden Boarding complex. Marsden School was purchased by the Trustees of the Bathurst Catholic Diocese in 1977 and the gates were not used for many years as their location was considered dangerous for their access to Gilmour Street. The age of the gates is unknown, but would have been part of the Rutherford Estate established in the middle of the 1800s.

The gates at the main entrance to the Scots All Saints’ College Campus West (All Saints’) are the McLeod Gates. These gates were erected by the All Saints Old Boys in memory of C.C.F. McLeod, Vice -Principal of All Saints’ 1923-1950. Originally they were red brick and

located further into the school entrance, but with the relocation of the main road they were moved to provide a safer road access and exit.’ Mr Mac’ was known by the boys for being able to fix anything, his love of sport, particularly ‘Union’, and his quiet but firm discipline. The McLeod Memorial Gateway provides an impressive entrance to the school and a lasting monument to ‘this great man’.

SPORTSour DRAW COVID-19 Update - Keeping College Community safe We continue to monitor the ongoing situation with the COVID-19 pandemic. Our Leadership Team are well informed and have plans in place to respond accordingly to protect our College Community.

Information about COVID-19​is constantly changing.

The NSW Health website is the one true source where we obtain our guidance here at the College because it contains accurate information about the virus, health advice and status updates. This page also provides local updates, including information on testing.

While the information from the various government departments can be overwhelming, most of the previous restrictions issued by NSW Health have not changed: • stay home if you are unwell; • get tested if you present with any symptoms; • self-isolate for 14 days if you have been in a ‘hotspot’ area; • social distance by staying 1.5 metres apart; • regularly wash and sanitise your hands; • cover coughs and sneezes.

Face masks are required to be worn by all staff, visitors and students from Years 7-12 while indoors. The College has face masks available for students who do not have one.

There are some exceptions to mask wearing, which can be found here: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/rules/ face-mask-rules#exemptions We continue to remind our Middle and Senior school students that they need to be wearing face masks on all public transport and College transport. Masks must be worn before they board the bus and not removed until they are off the bus.

Covid Safe QR Code All staff and visitors are required to sign in with the Covid Safe QR Code located around our campuses. We have one code for the entire College.

Visitors to the College – are only permitted on College grounds if considered essential. Any essential visitors are required to: • wear a face mask; • hand sanitize; • sign in with the Covid Safe QR Code; • maintain social distancing.

Where it is necessary for safety reasons, parents should park, apply a face mask and walk with their children SPORTS DRAW to the gate, and return their vehicle. Any parent who leaves their vehicle needs to sign in with the Covid Safe QR code.

On pick up, parents/carers should remain in their car until their child is waiting for collection. If you must leave your car, ensure you maintain social distancing of 1.5 metres and sign in with the Covid Safe QR code.

The only exemption to this is Preparatory School drop-off/pick-up and After-School Care collection because there is a legal requirement that parents sign their children in and out of these services. On these occasions, access is limited to one adult (and any other children who need to remain with that adult for safety reasons.)

We request that anyone entering our campuses please limit the amount of time they spend on campus and adhere to social distancing.

Uniform Shop orders should be placed online where possible and either collected by your child or shipped to you at home. If you do need to attend the Uniform Shop, please be vigilant with social distancing.

Students who develop symptoms at school will be isolated in the Health Centre, and their parents/guardian called to collect them immediately.

Any student with cold and flu symptoms will require a COVID-19 test.

When a negative result is returned, students from that household can return to school.

COVID-19 fact sheet for close contacts •

A close contact is someone who has been close to a person with infectious COVID-19 and might have become infected with the COVID-19 virus.

•

There are three ways to know if you are a close contact: 1. Someone in your home or who you have been near gets COVID-19 2. You get a text or phone call from NSW Health telling you that you are a close contact 3. You see from the website showing COVID-19 case locations and venues of concern that you have been to a close contact place on the day and time that an infectious person was there. If this happens to you, please call NSW Health on 1800 943 553.

•

If you are a close contact of a person with COVID-19 you must isolate from other people for 14 days since you were exposed. You must get tested for COVID-19 as soon as possible, even if you don't have symptoms. Isolating means staying apart from all other people, including people who live in the same place as you do.

•

If you are a close contact, please ask the following people (who are secondary close contacts) to get tested and to isolate until they get a negative test result:

•

Everyone you share your home with

•

Everyone who has been in your home since you were exposed to COVID-19

•

Everyone whose home you have visited since you were exposed to COVID-19

•

Friends you have shared a confined space with, such as a car, since you were exposed to COVID-19.

•

If any of the secondary close contacts are a healthcare worker who needs to return to work before you (the close contact) receive a negative test result, please ask them to speak to their manager for a risk assessment.

•

By law close contacts must to isolate themselves; self-isolation is required under the Public Health (COVID-19 Self Self-isolation) Order, and penalties can apply if the Order is not followed.

What do I need to do?

Immediately isolate All close contacts need to isolate, even if you currently feel well. Isolate means that you should be in a room away from other family or housemates. You cannot leave the residence unless for medical emergencies or other emergencies. Do not stop on your way home.

You must isolate for at least 14 days after you last had contact with the infectious person.

You will be told how long you need to isolate in writing by a NSW Health authorised contact tracer (this may be a text message).

A contact tracer will contact you - you must tell the contact tracer the address of the place where you will be isolating and confirm your phone number.

Get tested for COVID-19 Even if you don’t have symptoms, you must get tested at your closest testing location: 1. as soon as possible when you first know you are a close contact, and 2. on day 7 after you were exposed if you can access a drive-through testing clinic or can walk or cycle to a testing clinic, and 3. between days 12 and 14 after you were exposed.

You must travel by private vehicle, or walk or cycle to get your test. You must not travel by public transport, taxi or ride-share to have COVID-19 testing. Wear a face mask that covers your nose and mouth at all times, and tell staff immediately that you are a close contact of a person with COVID-19.

If you test negative, you still need to remain in self-isolation until your self-isolation period finishes. This is because it can take up to 14 days for you to become COVID-19 positive after exposure.

If you develop symptoms at any stage of your self-isolation period, you should get tested immediately.

You will only be allowed to stop isolating if you have a test between days 12 and 14, and the result of this test is negative. If you do not have a test on or after day 12, you will be required to stay in self-isolation for 24 days after your last contact with the infectious person.

Notify people who have been near to you Let the following people know that they are a secondary close contact, and that they should get tested and isolate until you both receive a negative result; •

Everyone you share your home with

•

Everyone who has been in your home since you were exposed to COVID-19

•

Everyone whose home you have visited since you were exposed to COVID-19

•

Friends who you have shared a confined space with, such as a car, since you were exposed to COVID19.

You should keep separate from these people at all times. Please ask them to read the Advice for secondary close contacts and follow the requirements.

How do I isolate?

•

Self-isolation means you must stay in your home or accommodation and stay completely separated from others. You cannot leave your home or accommodation, unless for medical care (including a COVID-19 test), or in an emergency. You cannot allow other people into your home or accommodation unless they usually live at the premises, or they are entering for medical or emergency purposes.

•

Self-isolation is different from stay-at-home directions (lockdown). When you are Isolating, you are not permitted to leave your home for outdoor exercise, shopping, work or education.

To Isolate, you must: •

Go directly to the place where you will isolate (home, hotel or other accommodation)

•

Not leave, unless for COVID-19 testing, urgent medical care, or in an emergency (including to avoid injury or escape from domestic violence). If you leave home for any of these reasons you must wear a face mask, stay 1.5 metres away from anyone else, and travel directly to and from the place you are going to.

•

Travel in a privately-owned car or walk or cycle. You may only travel with other people if they are isolating with you. You must not use public transport, taxi or ride-share.

•

Not leave self-isolation to receive COVID-19 vaccination. If you have an appointment, this will need to be rescheduled until you have finished isolating.

COVID-19 casual contact Fact sheet for casual contacts •

A casual contact is someone who has been near a person with infectious COVID -19 but who is at lower risk of getting COVID-19 than a close contact.

•

There are two ways to know if you are a casual contact:

•

NSW Health will send you a text or phone you.

•

You have checked the COVID-19 case locations and venues of concern and you have been at one of the casual contact places at the listed time.

•

All casual contacts need to get tested and isolate immediately.

•

This factsheet has been translated into various community languages, see translated resources.

Do I need to self-isolate and get tested?

Yes. Everyone who is a casual contact must get a test and isolate until they get a negative resul t.

Please follow the advice you get from NSW Health.

If you were at the casual contact place less than 4 days ago: •

get a COVID-19 test at your closest testing location, and isolate

•

get another COVID-19 test on day 5 after you were at the casual contact place

•

•

you can stop isolating when you get a negative result from your first test – but please: •

wear a mask when in the same room as any other person

•

do not leave your home except if this is necessary, or to exercise outdoors

•

go to work only if this is essential for your workplace.

monitor for COVID-19 symptoms and get tested again at any time if you develop any symptoms. You will need to isolate until you receive a negative test result.

If you were at the casual contact place 4 or more days ago: •

get a COVID-19 test at your closest testing location, and isolate

Please note: You must not leave your home to get a COVID-19 vaccination when you are isolating. Once you have received a negative result, you can attend a vaccination centre.

Isolation is different from stay-at-home directions. When you isolate, you are not allowed to leave the house for outdoor exercise, shopping, work or education. Other members of your household do not need to isolate during this period.

Please read the NSW Health Self-Isolation Guideline for further information.

Do I monitor for symptoms?

All casual contacts should monitor for symptoms for at least 14 days after you were at the casual contact place.

Symptoms to look out for include: •

fever or history of fever (night sweats, chills)

•

cough

•

sore throat

•

shortness of breath (difficulty breathing).

•

runny nose

•

loss of taste

•

loss of smell

•

muscle aches

Other reported symptoms of COVID-19 include fatigue, acute blocked nose (congestion), joint pain, headache, diarrhoea, nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite, unexplained chest pain and conjunctivitis.

What do I do if I develop symptoms?

If you develop symptoms you should get tested immediately. You must not travel by public transport, taxis or ride-share. Wear a face mask that covers your nose and mouth at all times, and tell staff immediately that you are a casual contact. In the rare occurrence if you can’t get to a testing location you can call your local Public Health Unit on 1300 066 055 and they will advise you on how to get a test.

If you become severely unwell and it is a medical emergency, you should phone Triple Zero (000). Tell the ambulance staff that you are a contact of someone with COVID-19.

What if I’m identified as a casual contact and I’m away from home?

If you are away from home when you find out you are a casual contact, you must immediately get tested and travel directly to your accommodation to isolate.

If you can, you should spend your isolation period where you are staying now. This may be a hotel, motel or other form of accommodation, as long as you can safely stay there and separate from all other people while you wait for your test result.

If you are currently staying in temporary accommodation that ends before you get your test result, or you have been asked to leave your accommodation by the owner or manager, NSW Health will help you. In exceptional circumstances, you may be allowed to travel home to finish your isolation period. Please call your local Public Health Unit on 1300 066 055 for help in this situation.

What if I’ve been to a venue where there has been a COVID-19 case but I haven’t been contacted?

If you know you have been to a venue where a COVID-19 case has been reported, but have not been contacted by NSW Health, please check the latest COVID-19 case locations and follow the advice for that place.
