A conversation with the Deputy Head of College Mr Andrew Weeding

Our performing arts students have had a very busy week with their Trial Exam performances.

Despite having last minute restrictions placed on the performances

by NESA, the students adapted to the situation admirably and demonstrated their exceptional talents.

On Monday evening, the group and individual performances from the Drama students were streamed live to a Zoom audience. If the online comments were anything to go by, all who watched enjoyed the acts very much. On Monday and Tuesday, the music students preformed their HSC pieces (forty eight in total) to the examiners and the reports back indicate many personal bests were achieved.

The Olympic Series - Two Inspirational Woman I have been wondering how I finish this Olympic Series of The Roar articles. There are, of course, many many stories that I could refer to that might inspire the soul. The story I have settled on is the women’s 5000m heats on the track at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The New Zealander Nikki Hamblin and the American Abby D’Agostino were both hoping to make the top five to qualify for the final, and then possibly contend for a medal.

Leading up to the Olympics, D’Agostino realised that her Christian commitment was half-hearted, and that she had elevated athletics over her commitment to Jesus Christ. So during the American trials, she decided to re-order her life and live, ‘All for Christ.’

This discussion influenced her prayer life, and she asked the Lord for an opportunity during the Games to be a witness for Him. Never in her wildest dreams did she expect that she would have an opportunity to witness for Christ during a race that would be beamed all over the world.

For the first half of the 5000m race, Hamblin sat in the middle of the pack just in front of D’Agostino.

With four laps remaining, Hamblin tripped, crashing to the ground and D’Agostino had no chance to react and crashed into her and also fell. The rest of the athletes continued the race. D’Agostino got up first.

Hamblin continued to lie on the ground. Instead of running on, Abbey D’Agostino went over to help Hamblin, saying: ‘Hey, get up, you have to get up, and we have to finish this!” Nikki Hamblin said later, “If Abbey hadn’t done that, I don't know whether I could have been able to get up and finish …”

The athletes started to run. After a few steps, Abbey again collapsed in pain as it suddenly dawned on her that she had really hurt herself – she had actually torn her knee's ACL. Despite the pain, she picked herself up and hobbled her way around for four more laps of

the track. Both athletes finished minutes behind the other athletes and it seemed like their Olympic dream to make the final was over. However, the Olympic Committee had another idea.

The Committee was inspired by their courageous interaction, where they sacrificed many seconds of their own race to help each other, so they allowed both women to run in the final. Hamblin did take her place in the final, but D’Agostino's injury prevented her from racing. Both women did receive an award – not gold, silver or bronze medals, but rather the Pierre de Coubertin World Fair Play award. When you search for inspirational Olympic stories, this is one of the top stories. It seems that Abbey’s prayer was answered in a far bigger way than what she could ever have imagined. She demonstrated love and care for another competitor over herself in the heat of competition and her and Hamblin’s story of humility still inspires others today. Amen.

As a result of COVID-19 restrictions our boarding students have not been able to get out and about as they usually do, going on day trips to Sydney or exploring our region.

If your child or family are friends with a boarder, we encourage you to think about having them over for a weekend to help them get off site.

All Things Sport Mr Mark Wilkinson Sports Administrator

A couple of ‘I’ll-deal-with-that-on-Monday’ emails landed in my inbox over the weekend. Unfortunately there were a couple of incidents at Saturday sport where a very small number of College parents and students got a little lippy with our opposition and officials. The biggest downside was these incidents happened in some really young age groups.

Can I be the annoying guy for a second and remind everyone that this is not the Olympics. We’re not playing for sheep stations. We’re playing Saturday junior sport in a quiet country town on an island tucked away in a little corner at the bottom of Planet Earth. Remember it’s almost impossible to create a champion at an early age, but it’s super easy to destroy any chance they may have of becoming one in the future.

“To be the best, you must learn to handle the worst.”

I just made that up! Actually, I’m lying. I found it on Google.

Sorry I’d like to apologise to any Middle School families that were affected by the confusing email I sent out regarding last week’s Senior School sports photos. It won’t happen again and as a punishment, I’ll drop and give you 10 push ups.

Middle and Junior School photos will be coming up later this term and I’ll clearly communicate the details with you when they’re finalised.

Extract from Year 12 English Extension 2 major works Following is an extract from Simi Atluri's Extension 2 Major Works. Students in English Extension 2 have to create a 6000 word major work for the HSC. Simi has chosen 'Fiction'.

Two children walked alone within a weeping willow wood wreathed by water, their tiny hands bound to one another. The boy’s bloody heart hung from the branches of The Dead Tree, enveloped by a paper prison. The girl smiled, her heart was held by the ocean bed, thumping against the iron chest of rock and sand. The grey owl watched as their hands became loose, the boy sunk into the soil of the forest and suffocated. The blue veins of the girl were threads against her white skin. Her body floated limply in the water. The grey owl let out a sad trill.

Blurb: Why can't we say what we feel? Why are we always held back by a hook imbedded at the back of our throats, pulling, tearing us away from what we truly mean? My composition is a satricial absurdist piece about dissastifaction through the lack of communication. Three characters offer the protagonist advice on his strange dream based on their own experience.

The dream had infested Harlan for days, impeding his writing. His script was non-existent and due today. His publisher, an embodiment of gluttony and vitriol, had threatened Harlan with the loss of his weekly stipend, his only source of income. Poverty stretched out her arms, beckoning him closer. He looked toward his paper piles stacked around the room, all filled with thousands of words that would never be uttered under the lights of the stage.

What a waste of ink.

Of time.

Of maggots.

Dessie had offered to help confront the truth of his dream, as he passingly mentioned its hindrance. She always smoked against the stairwell, an optimal place when one’s only motive was forcing conversation upon unwilling participants. He’d rebuffed her offers, but now he regretted it. While he dressed quickly, he grimaced at some unsavoury ink stains upon his shirt.

Why was everything so filthy? He poured the cartoned milk into a glass jug, a humble offering of peace to Dessie.

HICES Debating update We have recently received news that the extended lockdown in Sydney has forced HICES to suspend the HICES Debating Competition for 2021. For our Year 12 team of Simi Atluri, Jonah Siede, George Butler and Callum Duncan-Keen this means that their journey towards the Grand Final at UTS has come to a premature end.

However, the team’s achievements in the competition will still be recognised and we look forward to awarding them with a HICES certificate acknowledging their success at regional level.

Our Year 12 team finished at the top of their pool and would have progressed to the finals if the competition had continued. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff and students who have taken part in HICES Debating in 2021. It certainly has been a different year of debating with new challenges and opportunities presented by the coordination of both Zoom and face-to-face debates.

In comparison to the very short season enjoyed by debaters in 2020, HICES Debating 2021 has been a great success. The completion of all preliminary rounds of debating provided students in Years 5-12 with invaluable opportunities to flex their rhetorical muscle and grow in confidence and debating prowess.

Special thanks go to Mrs Jo Nicholls for her efficient co-ordination and calm mentorship of the Years 5-8 debating teams, Mr Andrew Maher for his assistance with adjudication and Mrs Christine Sams for her work with the Zoom debates and her co-ordination of HICES Debating in Term 1. We look forward to continuing to build on our strong debating tradition at Scots All Saints College in 2022.

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF JOHN BULKELEY In 1946, a young teacher was forced by illness to resign from the then new Scots School, Bathurst. It is pleasing to report that he later recovered from his illness, and met up with some of the Bathurst boys again during a long teaching career at Scots in Sydney. In his place, the school appointed John Bulkeley.

A native of Wallerawang, Mr Bulkeley was a student of the Cooerwull Academy at Bowenfels. After leaving school, he was employed by the Bank of New South Wales (now Westpac). Mr Bulkeley trained at the Sydney Teachers’ College at the University of Sydney. In World War II he served with the Royal Australian Artillery. At the end of the war, he took up the position at Scots with the intention of helping out until something else came up. He ended up staying for 22 years.

Mr Bulkeley was acting Headmaster on two occasions, but was best known and loved as the Housemaster of The Kennel. It was in The Kennel that most of the hundreds of boys who knew him remember him and his influence on them, an influence founded on his belief that his own Christian witness was of the utmost importance. He aimed to know the boys in his care and to maintain that interest beyond the school.

which eventually became official. After his death, the house previously known as Macphillamy House and New House was renamed Bulkeley House. The Kennel was renamed Ives in 2018. By that stage the connection with Mr Bulkeley had become rather obscure and had to be explained to the worried mothers' little boys about the embark on their boarding school careers.

Mr Andrew Maher

In 1951, Mr Bulkeley founded the Cadet Unit and was Officer in Charge for a number of years. It was he who was responsible for outfitting the unit with kilts some years later. He also founded the Old Boys Association in 1952.

As an Old Cooerwullian, he fostered links between Scots and Old Boys of the Academy at Bowenfels. During most of his time at Scots, Mr Bulkeley was in charge of the Preparatory School. When this was closed down in 1964, he became the school Bursar, a position he held until his retirement in 1967. He passed away on 1st April 1971.

Old Boys recall that Mr Bulkeley was a large man with a loud voice, and as school boys are want to do, they gave him a nickname: The Bulldog.
