Earlier this week all schools were issued with additional guidelines, which place further restrictions on our operations. Hopefully these will be temporary and through our ongoing support this will protect our community from the spread and impact of the COVID-19 virus.

While this is a frustrating intrusion into our lives we need to encourage each other to keep perspective, see the glass half-full, not half-empty, see the bigger picture and the hope of the future. As a Christian community, the message from God’s word reassures us that we were made to be connected and we are here for each other in our world with all its craziness, majesty, challenge and opportunity. 1 Peter 4 reminds us that we should “maintain constant love for one another… care for each other and support one another with whatever abilities we have”. As we continue to live and work with our families, friends, school and work colleagues, might we encourage each other, draw and give strength to each other throughout this time of ongoing concern. “The truth is we need each other. We need to trust, rely and depend on one another. God gave us each other to walk alongside, encourage and spur one another on in love. We are to carry each other’s burdens, care for each other’s practical needs, warn each other of danger and rejoice with each other.”

COVID-19 Update following latest NSW Government requirements for schools The NSW Government has announced a number of temporary orders to be placed on schools to manage the COVID-19 pandemic. These requirements are to remain in place for the rest of Term 3 and will then be reviewed. Please refer to the correspondence from our Head of College on Tuesday for further details. Changes to Junior School Drop off/ Pick Up and Meetings Unless a face-to-face meeting is essential and approved by the Head of College/ Head of Campus any parent/ teacher meetings or discussions are required to be conducted via Zoom or over the phone. NSW Government guidelines stipulate that parents and carers may not enter our campuses unless dropping to Pre-Kindergarten or collecting from Pre-Kindergarten or After School Care. To ensure we are following these guidelines, all parents (including Kindergarten) should drop off/ pick up from either the circle at the front of Esrom House or the Stage 1 carpark. School Hours Just a friendly reminder that school supervision commences at 8:25 am each day. Students should not arrive at school before this time. Waste Free Recess Scots All Saints Junior and Middle School is holding a Waste Free Recess on Tuesday 25 August. We ask that your child’s lunchbox contain as few items as possible that must be thrown away. Ideally, your child’s recess will only contain items that will be eaten, composted or recycled. Reusable containers are a handy way to pack a wastefree lunch. They also make it easy to buy food and
drink in bulk (instead of in single-servings) which can save money over time. The Waste Free Recess Challenge is one of Scots All Saints sustainability education initiatives. By participating, students will have a better understanding of how we can take action to reduce our waste. Waste-Free recess and lunch can also save money and promote healthy eating.
Snapshots from National Science Week In Kindergarten, students have been studying the different materials in our world. Last week all Kindergarten students brought in two items made of plastic and learnt that more than half the items in our classroom are made of plastic. We learnt that plastic comes from crude oil, on the bottom of the ocean floor and goes through many changes to become our Lego, lunch boxes and toys. This week we are sorting different materials according to whether they are hard or soft materials. Exploring ‘where do we see these materials around us’ and ‘why are these materials chosen to make specific objects?’ This week, in Year 1 students made fossilised dinosaur footprints and explored the types of food that dinosaurs ate. Students investigated the evidence of this, even though they lived millions of years ago. Students continued to build on adding elements of learnt knowledge to their Dinosaur Scenescape. Year 4 students have been learning all about forces and motion. On Wednesday they had to design and build a vehicle that could be mechanically pulled up a slope and then released down track. continued page 3

Narrative Writing All of the Junior School teachers recently assessed their students’ narrative writing. We commonly refer to narratives as stories. Typically, a story involves a character or characters (people, animals, fictional beings) who are tasked with solving a problem or complication, or resolving a conflict. We follow a series of events as they endeavour to solve their problem and the story generally ends with a satisfactory resolution. There are two important ways you can support your child in becoming a good narrative writer. 1. Read and share with them examples of great writing. Try to always have a good book up your sleeve (hard copy or electronic) which you can offer to read to them, or have them read. 2. Make-up and tell stories to each other. Regular story time with your child is highly valuable in supporting their learning, and highly pleasurable for both of you! To the left are some other ideas of activities that will help your child to practise telling stories. Premier’s Reading Challenge Not long now! Reading Records need to be completed by AUGUST 28! Please record all books online before this date and try not to leave it to the last minute to avoid delays due to heavy website traffic. Happy reading everyone! Crazy Sock Day- Friday 4 September All Junior School students can wear some crazy socks to school on Friday 4 September along with a gold coin as we raise money for Masila, our sponsor child from Kenya. As this is the final school day before Father’s Day, we’re encouraging all of our dads and special friends out there to wear crazy socks as well. Don’t be afraid to take a photo and email it through to your child’s teacher.

Getting to know you... Junior School Teachers
Miss Victoria Matheson- Year 2
I have been very privileged to have been a teacher in the amazing Junior School on the All Saints Campus for the past three years. I believe every classroom has its own unique community; my role as the teacher is to assist each child in developing their own identity and igniting the spark for a lifelong love of learning. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing and seeing the evidence that you’ve made an impact on a child’s life. Presenting the curriculum in a way that incorporates each different learning style, as well as making the content fun and relevant to the students' lives is my ultimate aim. I believe effective teachers inspire students to develop their own learning processes. Creativity in the classroom can make the difference between bored students and excited students. One of the things I absolutely love about being a teacher is that you are constantly learning, the children teach you, as much as you teach them. In my opinion, it is very difficult to have a boring day at work when you are a teacher. You always leave work with at least one exciting, funny, or interesting story to tell! Here at Scots All Saints, I am surrounded by highly capable colleagues, supportive parents, a welcoming school community, fantastic facilities and blessed with incredible students. Getting to know you... Junior School Teachers Mrs Maggie Walsh - Year 2 Teaching is the greatest privilege of all. Here at Scots All Saints College it is a pleasure to teach such wonderful students in a supportive and caring environment. As a teacher, parent and past student (All Saints), it was always my goal to be part of the teaching profession here at the school, to give back to the school and community that gave so much to me. I truly value the Christian ethos of the school, encouraging children to shine and be the best they can be. Every year, I get quite excited by the new smiling faces that are presented to me on the first day. I love to listen to children and get to know their interests and daily wins. There are no ordinary moments in teaching and am lucky to celebrate even the smallest achievement in a day, even losing a first tooth. Working with parents towards a common goal for their child is a strong focus of my teaching. It is this family approach that makes it easy for me to come to work each day, and leave knowing the children have had the best day they possibly could. Sharing my love of literature with the children, taking the time to read to them every day is so important for learning and building positive relationships. Using books to help teach not only content, but building positive friendships and strong strategies to cope with events in our lives. Working in a Pre-K to Year 8 setting allows me to watch students I taught in Kindergarten, become such happy and awesome young adults. It never ceases to amaze me how great the students at our school become. Their willingness to help others, look adults in the eye and talk openly about their ideas is so refreshing and assuring. Our New Normal Earlier this week the NSW Government Health Department put in place new and tighter restrictions in order to keep all children safe. We will continue to keep our College community up-to-date with any changes we put in place to ensure we are adhering to these restrictions. Please contact me if you have any questions relating to the College COVID Safe protocols. Active Afternoons I have been most impressed by the way the students have been enthusiastically participating in their sport activity on Thursday afternoons. Along with their practical Physical Education lesson each week, the Active Afternoon sessions provide an opportunity for the students to get outside and burn off some energy. We are ensuring that all staff conducting the activities are fully briefed on the most current COVID Safe practices and that the children are monitored. Jeans for Genes Day Thank you to all of the Junior and Middle School students who supported the Children’s Medical Research Institute with their donation for Jeans for Genes Day. We raised $715.55 which we will present to a representative from the Children’s Medical Research Institute in the near future. Keeping Children Safe - Changes to Buses and Traffic Management on the All Saints Campus Keeping our students safe at school is of paramount importance to us. We are constantly reviewing our protocols and practices to ensure that we provide the safest possible environment for the children. As a result, we will be introducing some changes to the bus routines and traffic management.

As of Monday 24 August there will be a number of changes introduced as follows: • All buses (except Scots All Saints College owned mini buses) will now drop off and pick up from the external bus stop on Eglinton Road. There will be a staff member on duty at this bus stop both before and after school to supervise the children. • Children catching the Scots All Saints College mini buses will get on and off these buses inside the school grounds. • The Scots All Saints College Lithgow coach will drop off inside the school grounds in the mornings, and pick up children from the external bus stop of an afternoon. We will also have a crossing supervisor at the pedestrian crossing at the front of the Esrom House gates both before and after school to ensure safe passage for the children. In order for this to work efficiently the daily schedule for the school day will be changed: Changes to the Daily Schedule: 8.55am 3.15pm

We have taken 5 minutes off lunch time, reducing it from 45 minutes to 40 minutes. Recess will remain the same at 25 minutes. Moving the buses outside will also improve traffic flow within the College grounds. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Trial HSC Examinations Year 12 are currently sitting their Trial HSC Examinations and will continue to do so until Friday 28 August. Should they wish to do so, Year 12 students are welcome to use the Library to study during the day. We continue to pray for our young people and wish the Year 12 cohort all the best for these examinations. Year 11 Examinations Year 11 will sit their final exams for their Preliminary Courses in Week 9 this term (Mon 14 Sept – Friday 18 Sept)

Year 10 Subject Selection Mentoring Year 10 students are currently in the process of selecting their Stage 6 subjects. To ensure our students make informed decisions, they have had the opportunity to speak with teachers about the various senior subjects. In addition, staff mentors are meeting with students to talk through their subject selections; how these line up with their strengths and interests and their plans for life after school. Year 10 Parent- Teacher Interviews PTO is now open for parents of Year 10 students to book their Zoom interviews with teachers. You should have received an email outlining the instructions for accessing PTO through the College website. We have had reports that last weekend’s sports fixtures were contested in a great spirit and emphasised the importance of being actively engaged in sports where the students can be with their peers in a positive environment. We certainly appreciate the efforts of our local community sports committees in maintaining the running of their competitions. We are very grateful. All teams have valued the opportunities provided to them and continue to display improvement in their respective sports. The success the students are experiencing on the courts and fields reflects the efforts the students are undertaking during training sessions. At this point in the respective competitions the Netball 1st VII, 3rd VII, Colts and U16s Red teams have progressed through their games undefeated. The competition has provided many nail biting moments with close scores in many games. The Hockey teams are also experiencing success on the turf with the 1st XI leading the competition and the U15s Blue team mirroring the achievements of their older peers. All four teams are progressing well and developing their skills. Our Active Afternoons program continues to keep the students engaged and connected to their friends. The introduction of other activities aside from our College Core Sports has allowed the kids to experience the opportunity to try new games and activities which they can ultimately engage in after they leave school. The addition of the new table tennis tables have been a real hit. The opportunity to gather the teams together in the Hunter Sports Centre allowed the staff to explain the reasons which led to the cancellation and unpredictable nature of COVID-19 and the guidelines mandated by NSW Health. The directive from the NSW Premier and the Government was accepted by the students in a very mature manner. Their display of solidarity is a sign of the resilience our students are exhibiting to the speed humps they are experiencing this year. With the HSC Trials commencing this week the opportunity for the Open rugby boys to play some internal 7s and 10 a side rugby will occur at the conclusion of the trial exams. Training is still happening during Active Afternoons for the U15s and U16s squads as we refocus our energies on introducing the skills required for the fast paced game of rugby 7s. The College acknowledges that the advice and the current situation has, and will continue to change rapidly. As the situation evolves, the College will continue to monitor and act accordingly throughout the remainder of this term. The College community have been very diligent with adhering to the protocols and procedures required by each of the local community sporting associations that we are involved with. We again remind our students and families to remain conscious of these guidelines to ensure that a safe COVID-19 free environment is maintained.

Head of Galloway House appointment It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of the new Head of Galloway House as Mrs Kimberley Jones.
Lovely Lambs! Lambing has begun on the Scots Campus farm with our first cross ewes starting to lamb over the weekend. Our ewes are synchronised to make lambing quicker with our students being involved from the very beginning with the application of the CIDR’s (source of progesterone to synchronise the ewes cycles) back in March, to pregnancy testing and now checking ewes regularly. Our Stage 5 students will be involved in the ‘marking’ of these lambs in the next fortnight and then regular weighing and monitoring as we grow them out to market weights. The cold and wet weather meant some lambs and ewes needed to be put in the shearing shed over the weekend but we are lucky to say we have had no losses thus far. It is lovely to be able to lamb with plenty of feed this year – a vast contrast to lambing in 2019! Mrs Libby Dawes Director of Agricultural Studies and Equestrian
Over the last 25 years, Kimberley has been an innovative and driven educator, a motivated and lifelong learner, exceptionally well-organised with highly-developed time management skills. She has demonstrated the ability to successfully lead teams and implement positive change. Through key leadership roles in several schools, Kimberley pursued her passion for student wellbeing and a desire and commitment towards student growth - emotionally, intellectually, physically, spiritually and socially. Through relationships with students, parents and colleagues, Kimberley has implemented policies and procedures that have benefited student wellbeing. Kimberley is an inspirational and well-respected leader. In roles as Careers Advisor, Year Co-ordinator, Head of House, Acting Head of Mathematics and Head of Girls Boarding she has led and inspired many staff from a diverse cross-section of the school communities. Kimberley comes to us from Kinross Wolaroi School where she is currently the Year 12 Co-ordinator and Careers Advisor and a senior Mathematics teacher. Bradwardine- a Homestead with a History In the development of Australia’s agricultural and industrial activities, few properties have played such an important part as Bradwardine. It is and always has been a property with destiny but more recently there is considerable concern as to what can be done to save this wonderful old homestead from the ravages of age. Bradwardine homestead was built by Sir Francis Suttor in 1870-72 on land he acquired from James Walker. On that land, he established a high-quality Merino sheep stud and Bradwardine rams and ewes were eagerly sought. The sheep were the forebears of many of the famous flocks in existence today. Sir Francis established lucerne crops on the river flats, as well as an Arab horse stud and from this many of Australian great stock horses originated and coach horses for Cobb and Co. Sir Francis Suttor entered Parliament in 1875 as a member of Sir Henry Parkes’ Cabinet. It is recalled that on one occasion a meeting of the Cabinet was held at Bradwardine homestead and at this session the Parliament then in office was dissolved. This was one of the rare occasions, if not the only one, on which a meeting of Cabinet has been held in a private home. Bradwardine was occupied by an Afrikander family known as the Beuchers during the Boer War 1899 to 1901. During the same time, Sir Francis suffered financial loss in the bank crash of the period. His pastoral leases expired, and the property was mortgaged. Bradwardine was acquired by Robert Gordon Edgell. The property was purchased from Gordon Edgell and Sons by the Church of England Diocese of Bathurst in 1957 at the request of the Council of All Saints’ College. Bradwardine homestead became a new home for boarders and the surrounding fields were used for playing fields, agricultural projects and workshops for the next half-century. boarding house and renamed Britten house. As new boarding houses were built to accommodate a growing boarder population Bradwardine continued to house junior boarders until it was finally closed for boarding in 2005. Over the next decade, the house was used to accommodate visiting groups, parents, and staff. The building with such a rich heritage is in need of restoration but trying to maintain such a gracious country house has become a very difficult and expensive task. Efforts are made to “mothball” Bradwardine until it can be restored to its Victorian glory and decisions made as to its future use in the field of education. Mrs Memory Sanders Archives

Waste Free Day 25 August All Saints Campus This is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our sustainability practises, remembering that even in these unusual times looking after the planet is just as important. Many of the students at Scots All Saints have continued since last year to bring a waste free lunchbox to school and we congratulate you on your sustainability commitment. Next Tuesday is a chance to reset your intentions if you perhaps haven’t given it a go yet or has fallen back into old habits. All you have to do is pack snacks and lunch in re-usable containers, use cloth napkins or beeswax wraps to cover your food. Grab a drink bottle or keep cup. Waste free can be healthier and cheaper.

COVID-19 Update Keeping our College Community safe Earlier in the week, the NSW Government announced a number of temporary orders to be placed on schools to manage the COVID-19 pandemic. These requirements are to remain in place for the rest of Term 3 and will then be reviewed. Fortunately, the College has already implemented a number of these new changes earlier in the year, so now there are fewer adjustments to be made. However, a number of activities on all three campuses - the Scots Campus, the All Saints Camus and the Lithgow Campus - will be impacted by the new regulations. We are working with the cross-campus COVID-19 Management team and our Department Heads to ensure that everything we do here at Scots All Saints continues to meet or exceed government guidelines. You can view a summary of the updated guidelines that were provided to schools by following this link: https://education.nsw.gov.au/ covid-19/advice-for-families#<strong>School2 Schools are not permitted to have parents on campus at any time unless they are collecting children from After School Care or Pre-Kindergarten. Schools have been instructed to place all activities held on campus involving outside teachers or facilitators that don’t link directly into the state curriculum on hold until the end of Term 3. Furthermore, we are now required to keep students in stage/ year groups or cohorts. We will make adjustments to activities and break sessions to ensure that we are compliant with these regulations. In addition to the changes communicated by Head of College, Mr John Weeks, here is a brief summary of the key points and your responsibilities to keep our community safe: continued page 14

Noone Uniform Shop Update The Uniform Shop will continue to operate during its usual hours Monday 8:00 am – 2:00 pm / Wednesday 12 noon to 4:00 pm / Friday 8:00 am – 2:00 pm All Saints Campus students are permitted to enter the Uniform Shop at recess and lunch to collect the orders placed by their parent/guardian during these times. Deliveries will continue as normal to the Senior Campus. Please email connect@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu. au to seek permission from Mr Weeks for a parent to be given an exemption to visit the uniform shop. • If your child/ children are unwell with respiratory symptoms (even very mild ones) please keep them at home and have them tested for COVID-19. If any member of your household is awaiting the results of a COVID19 test we require that your whole family remains off campus until a ‘negative’ test result is returned.
• If you or any member of your household travels to or through a COVID-19 hotspot, we require that no member of your household enter our campuses until 14 days after leaving the hotspot. Hotspots are determined according to NSW Health and can be viewed here: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest- news-and-updates
• If your child is tested for COVID-19, please advise us and then forward a copy of the ‘negative’ test results to the College prior to your child returning to school. This can be done via SMS to the Health Centre via mobile to 0427 935 613 or by email to Felicity.Brown@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au Once you have forwarded the result and your child/ children are ‘symptom free’, they are welcome to return to school.
• It is vitally important that parents (with the exception of Pre-Kindergarten and After School Care parents) do not come inside any Scots All Saints campus. Under the new regulations, contact between parents, carers and staff members will have to occur online or over the telephone. Please remember to ‘Kiss, Drop, Collect’ and move on. If you need to alight from your vehicle for road safety reasons, please be vigilant with social distancing and spend as little time as possible outside of your vehicle.
• Plain Navy Face Masks are available for online purchase from the Uniform Shop for $13.50 each. As with all Uniform Shop purchases, parents need to buy online or allow students to attend the Uniform Shop by themselves. These Face Masks are not a compulsory part of our uniform but students are welcome to purchase and wear these if they wish to do so.
• Observe the 1.5m physical distancing rule between adults at all times
A reminder that Noone Uniform Shop will now operate online. Parents and carers are not permitted to attend the Uniform Shop on campus unless they obtain special permission from the Head of College. If fittings are required, Uniform Shop staff will assist students and liaise with parents over the phone or online. All orders should be placed online and can be collected by the student or shipped to the purchaser. As we work through the impacts of these new guidelines and apply them to every activity within the College, we will provide you with further updates. Please remember that Bathurst hasn’t had a case of COVID-19 for an extended period of time and factor this in when making decisions about travel outside of our region.
