A conversation with the Head of College

Mr John Weeks Showcasing our young performers What kind of music do you like? Rock and roll, country, classical, rap, folk?

What about entertainment? Theatre, musicals, dance, bands, choirs?

What kind of genre appeals to you? Suspense, mystery, comedy, romance, action, sci-fi?

For me, it’s all of the above… and more! The truth is 'the performing arts' be it music, dance or acting, is something we can relate to and brings us great enjoyment.

The Performing Arts at Scots All Saints I firmly believe every child at every age should be given the chance to become involved in a performing arts program so that they can pursue their personal interests in this area and enjoy the personal sense of achievement and happiness which comes from it.

Fulfilment, happiness and much pride filled BMEC last Monday evening when the first Scots All Saints 'Showcase' took place for 2019.

A packed house witnessed over 150 performers, in 18 different groups, entertain us for over three hours. It was sensational and I wish to congratulate all of our staff and students on the success of the event. A very special acknowledgment to Mr Jon Clipsham and his team.

What’s next for Performing Arts?

In the first six months of operation our Performing Arts program has grown quickly. In the music realm more than 300 students are involved in learning a musical instrument (or two) and belong to one of the 42 existing ensembles.

We now employ 36 professional tutors who visit the school, mostly on a weekly basis, to work with our students. Additionally, we have students involved in major productions such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Annie. A Film Festival and Battle of the Bands Competition will be held later this year.

As you see, Performing Arts is a 'huge' program and to better plan, coordinate and deliver it, 'The Scots All Saints Performing Arts Academy' is being formed for the benefit of all our students.

2:15 pm Friday, 23 August The Foundation Chapel Service date and time has been moved to 23 August (Friday week) to be held in the Bickerdike Centre, All Saints Campus. This is to allow boarding parents more time with their children in what is a very busy Parent Weekend. It will also provide all parents the opportunity to attend Chapel before the Parent Teacher Interviews which will directly follow the Chapel Service.

This is a wonderful occasion for our community to give thanks to God and to celebrate the four great traditions (All Saints' College, Marsden, Scots College Sydney, The Scots School) that are now represented in our one College. With this service, not only do we celebrate our heritage, we also have a meaningful opportunity to build our new community as we meet altogether. Parents of Pre-K students are warmly invited to bring their children and sit together during the service. During the service, the Junior and Middle School students will be seated together in year groups.

I am confident that this will be a rewarding time for our community and I look forward to seeing you there!

Snow fun for boarders

What an amazing weekend of snow across the region! Our Boarding House Managers took our boarding students out to Sunny Corner to enjoy a snow day. This was the chance for many of our students to see snow for the first time and make memories with their friends and boarding family.

End of term bookings for Trainlink 'boarders only' coaches A reminder to parents with end of term bookings on NSW Trainlink 'boarders only' coaches.

This service is supplied by NSW Trainlink as a service to boarders only and is dependent on numbers requiring transport.

NSW Trainlink advises the following conditions with boarders transport: Please see the following dates for End Term 3 / Beginning Term 4 travel.

Transport Dates for End Term 3 / Beginning Term 4: Students depart – Friday 27 September 2019 after 3:20 pm (Valedictory Assembly)

Students return – Monday 14 October 2019 after 2:00 pm Submit bookings to Mr Maher or Mrs Mackay by – Friday 23 August 2019 PLEASE NOTE: Far western boarding students are to apply for special leave if they want to access this service Friday 27 September.

Students enjoy French film making In French Club this term, we have combined our efforts into our film entry for The Alliance Francaise Sydney, School Competition.

We elected to produce a 2 minute short film about something out of the ordinary that happens during a French class.

Our story begins in the middle of a lesson where a discussion is taking place about Napoleon and his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo. Suddenly, the students explode into song and dance to ABBA’s famous hit Waterloo. We look forward to the results in October.

Although we may not succeed, the joy and fun of writing and producing far exceeds winning.

Year 11 Biology students attend Biological Diversity Study Day at Mt Tomah

On Thursday 8 August the two Year 11 Biology classes headed to Mt Tomah to engage in various workshops hosted by the Botanical Gardens.

In the first session the Australian Museum had resources with activities targeted to the new Biology syllabus. Students were able to collect data comparing extinct with extant Australian species and then analyse reasons for the differences.

The students' favourite session was hosted by Taronga Zoo and involved studying living specimens from the cute and cuddly ring tailed possum to the not so soft and furry carpet python.

At the time of the photo, showing Charlie with the python, Yuma was in the opposite corner of the room hiding under the chairs!

The final session for the day was hosted by Glen an ex-teacher, now at the Botanical Gardens. He was able to reinforce the best approach to answering questions… so the fact is …this is how …the reason why … being because … and he demonstrated this approach with the examples he had on display.

Special thanks must go to our laboratory technician Kristy Knight and the dining hall staff for supplying a delicious lunch and morning tea.

Eisteddfod success for SASC Speech and Drama students

It has been a very busy couple of weeks for the SASC Speech & Drama students!

A number of speech students recently participated in the Wellington and Orange Eisteddfods with excellent results.

WELLINGTON EISTEDDFOD Ruby Thorne performed in 11 sections and won six 1st places, two 2nd places and three 3rd places.

ORANGE EISTEDDFOD A big congratulations to the following students who performed in the Orange Eisteddfod last week: Neel Shah, Maggie Rosewarne, Emily Nicoll, Gracie White, Clancy White, Audrey White, Harry Thorne, Jayden Shi, Ramona Shi, Natalia Burgess, Maggie Rosewarne & Matilda Rosewarne.

Many students came away with lots of prizes but more importantly displayed great sportsmanship and represented the College with pride.

Pre-Kindergarten news

Pre-Kindergarten were visited by Bathurst Fire Brigade on 8 August. The students talked about how to be safe if there is a fire, what firefighters wear and what equipment they carry in their fire truck. The students were also invited to take turns using the hose with the aid of the firefighter. Thank you Bathurst Fire Department for coming to our College to share fire safety education with our Pre-Kindergarten students.

Last week Pre-K 3 braved the icy conditions to visit the school Ag Farm and feed the baby calves with Mrs Casey’s Year 7 students.

Everyone had a fabulous time hand-feeding and patting the two beautiful 10-week-old calves. Thank you to Year 7 and Mrs Casey for the invitation.

Welcome to our second column for the P and F. The famous Spring Fair is being held on 8 September on All Saints Campus, and is part of the historical fabric of the College, and a popular family event for the entire Bathurst community.

The event attracts thousands of people and is a great opportunity for us to show off our wonderful school, facilities and most importantly people.

Positive Psychology training commences for staff A significant developmental milestone for student wellbeing at the College was passed this week.

We were pleased to welcome Dr Paula Robinson (Founder and CEO) and Nichole Walker (General Manager) from the Applied Positive Psychology Learning Institute, who commenced training for staff at the College.

Fifteen staff members have completed the first two days of a six-day course that will earn them a Practising Certificate for Wellbeing in Education.

The training days were held on the Scots Campus in the Tim Richards Pavilion yesterday and today.

A further fifteen teachers will commence the course on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

The other training days required for these two groups to complete the course are scheduled to take place in September and October.

The training is an important first step towards

embedding positive education at the College. To be effective, a sustained and manageable process is necessary in order to assist staff in moving gradually from the science of research-based positive psychology principles to the practical applications of these principles both inside and outside the classroom.

The focus of the first day of training was on the foundations of wellbeing, encompassing what is meant by the terms wellbeing, positive psychology and positive education, and why these concepts are important for our young people.

The second day involved looking inward – the wellbeing of others begins with the wellbeing of self.

We look forward to seeing Paula and Nichole again next week. As part of this visit, Paula will be presenting a Positive Parenting session for our families on Tuesday evening.

HICES Debating Quarter Final

Last Monday 12 August our Year 10 HICES Debating team of Simi Atluri, George Butler, Austin Markwick and Sophie Cox traveled to Blue Mountains Grammar School to contest a Quarter Final with Inaburra Christian School.

As we left the Scots Campus, the highway was closed due to the snow fall over the weekend and were it not for the intrepid driving of Mr Warren Stocks, we may not have been able to make it. The topic asked the debaters to consider the impact of Australia’s opinions on the global stage and opened the door for some robust discussion of the issues at play in the current international climate. Scots All Saints College presented an intelligent and polished case but were bested by a clear sighted opposition from Inaburra.

The team’s success this year is to be commended and they are determined to go all the way to the final in their last year of competitive HICES Debating in 2020. Thank you to all the staff and parents of our College who continue to support and assist our students in their pursuit of debating.

Junior Inter-House Athletics Carnival The very first Scots All Saints College Pre-K to Year 6 Inter-House Athletics Carnival was loaded with an abundance of colour, enthusiasm, house spirit and determination. The day commenced with the five Houses performing their War Cries. All of the Houses were very well prepared and each and every student gifted the judges, fellow students and spectators with an array of boisterous chants that were performed with upmost pride. It was a terrific way to start the day and a huge congratulations to Booth House on their success.

Throughout the day the students all had the opportunity to compete in the 100m, 800m, Turbo Javelin, Shot Put and Long Jump. Finalists were pre-selected for the High Jump and Discus events.

This arrangement gave all students the opportunity to have a busy day with significant numbers of students involved.

Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Year 1 students graced the athletics arena with their presence mid-morning after completing some of their own events on the Junior School oval. They showed everyone their skill and speed on the track and proudly received their yellow participation ribbon as a memory of the occasion.

As the program is completely new, the students who placed first in their event are officially the 2019 record holders.

Pour l’amour du français Last Thursday, a group of students from Year 8 who were inquiring about choosing elective French listened to Morgan Watts, a Year 10 student who has studied French for quite a while, talk about her experiences learning French and doing a French exchange.

We were treated to a delicious French brunch courtesy of Madame Adamson.

We all enjoyed the talk very much and are extremely excited to learn French next year.

RSA/RCG Course for Year 12 students We will be hosting RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) and RCG (Responsible Conduct of Gambling) training after the HSC Trial Exams on the 14/15 September. This will be held at the Scots Campus Library and run from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Costs: $250. Expressions of interest need to be registered with Ms Jones - helen.jones@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu. au. You can do the course at 17 years of age, but obviously not use it until you are 18. The certificate is valid for five years.
