A conversation with the Head of College
upcoming major events
Mr John Weeks
I’m often asked the question “What are the most important years of schooling?” The answer of course is all of them! Having said that, it is equally true that “the better the start the better the finish!” Children who are exposed to exciting learning experiences which promote their curiosity and sense of adventure in caring and supportive environments develop and retain a desire to learn all their life. So what do those exciting leaning experiences need to look like in the modern era? Take it as a given that basic skills “in reading, literacy and numeracy are significant skills to master early but we now need to add to this the ‘new basics’ like collaboration, communication, problem solving and creativity.” Social and emotional training, where we teach skills and attitudes to develop qualities like confidence, independence, appreciation and resilience, creates positive communities of learners which is essential. Active learning in safe, challenging and interactive environments should do more than just develop physical agility. Active learning also builds team work; provides experiences for planning, designing, creativity and self-expression. Stimulating curiosity through science and technology based learning, develops awareness, knowledge, and understanding of how things work. All of the above needs to happen as early as possible so that young minds and bodies are switched on and stay switched on. Many of these things are already happening in our Early Years program for Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2. In 2020, these programs will be enhanced even further with new programs and new resources. continued page 2
