A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

News about the Lithgow Campus The decision to consolidate the Lithgow Campus with Bathurst has been communicated to parents and staff over the past couple of days. Many would be aware that The Scots School opened a small, one teacher school in Lithgow in 2006.

There are currently 13 boys and girls from K-4 in attendance. A separate Pre-K program with 11 students also operates there.

With the creation of the Scots All Saints College with our K-4 Junior, 5-8 Middle and 9-12 Senior Schools, increasing numbers of families from Lithgow and its regions have chosen to enrol here and the enrolments at Lithgow have not grown. In some ways, the College has been competing against itself in the region. All Lithgow students have been offered guaranteed positions in the College and transport on the new dedicated bus service from 2021. The staff will also have the option to relocate to the main College site. The buildings will be relocated to Bathurst at the end of the school year.

The many challenges of COVID-19 There is increasing concern within our community about the possible spread of the coronavirus. As you know, the College has been vigilant in following all of the NSW Health directives. In many ways we have exceeded these.

Communication of restrictions has been somewhat confusing over the past few days around school activities in particular. As a result of this directive we will tighten further a number of planned activities to be as compliant as possible for the health and safety of our College and community. These will include professional development activities for staff, the planned Literature Festival, weekend interschool rugby and end-of-year camps.

We are still working our way through permissible Year 12 Valedictory celebrations.

Innovation STEM Centre – construction to begin shortly After a slight delay due to COVID-19, tenders for the construction of our Innovation STEM Centre on the All Saints Campus are being finalised so work can begin in Term 4.

The Innovation STEM Centre will bring world’s best practice in education to regional NSW, enabling our students to work collaboratively and develop knowledge combining in skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to find solutions to overcome real-life issues.

Research shows the new basic skills needed by young people to engage in a complex world and navigate the challenges they will inherit are problem-solving, communication skills, digital learning, teamwork,

critical thinking, creatively and financial literacy.

Other schools are doing this around the world, and we are pleased that our students will soon have a dedicated cutting-edge Innovation Centre to build these strengths.

The project is being delivered as a result of generous funding from Federal Government’s independent school grants program of $700,000 and a further $750,000 towards the project from the College Foundation announced last year by President, Mr Bruce Clydsdale.

We are pleased to be able to share with you a new and improved design encompassing the Design and Technology and Science buildings on All Saints Campus. (see image below).

Many parents have asked about the continuity of learning of STEM education through to the Scots Campus. Coding Clubs and STEM projects are already underway, however we also have plans to also build an Innovation Centre for our Senior students in the near future. We hope to hear about further government grant funding shortly.

This is a very exciting project and we will keep you updated with the progress.

HOMEWORK CENTRE

The Year 7/8 After School Homework Centre is held in the All Saints campus library on a Monday afternoon from 3:20 – 4:45 pm. It will not be operating this coming Monday (10 August) due to other staff commitments. The table below outlines the remaining dates for Term 3: WEEK 5 6 7 8 9 10

Student Wellbeing Mr Tom van Gend Head of Student Wellbeing K-12

2021 Student Leadership Development Program Forty-eight students submitted applications in Term 2 to be considered for the 2021 student leadership group.

Names of all applicants were included on an online ballot paper. The ballot conducted included Years 9 – 12 students and academic staff on the Scots Campus to gauge the level and spread of support for each applicant.

Candidates for student leaders were then short-listed by the leadership selection panel based on the quality of application, voting by staff and students, academic, effort and behaviour records of the applicant and feedback from relevant College staff.

The thirty-one candidates have each been interviewed by Ms Leaf and myself during the past three weeks. The interview process has been immensely energising: we are blessed to have enthusiastic young people who presented fabulous ideas to improve the all-round College experience for their fellow students. Preparation for interview was obvious, and it was especially pleasing to see that their attitude in the current COVID-19 world

reflected a growth mindset, rather than a fixed or even a defeatist one. Rather than focusing on what “can’t be done”, candidates chose instead to present ideas for operating effectively within the current restrictions, and for devising work-arounds where necessary to provide opportunities for their peers.

The task is now for the selection panel to reconvene to consider the best fit for each of the twenty-three formal leadership positions available. This will be no easy task, as there is considerable merit in each candidate. Once positions have been finalised and announced, we will extend an invitation to all of our 2021 leadership year group to form program and house committees to support the prefects and captains.

In preparation for this, Year 11 students are currently working with the Year 11 Co-ordinator and Tutors on activities that have been designed and chosen to develop leadership, collaboration, communication and interpretation skills. These activities emphasise trust, active listening, solving problems by looking at them in new ways and considering the thoughts and ideas of others.

Pre-K on The Scots Campus A Snapshot of the last 4 weeks.

There’s nothing quite like getting comfy with a good book in the reading corner on a cold day.

The children are learning about Community Workers and Helpers throughout this term. Some of the children dressed up as people in our community that inspire them.

The children wear jeans to show their support for Jeans for Genes Day on August 7th.

It was great to see everyone so enthusiastic to be back at school this term. There has been a lot of fun times both in the classroom and playground over the past four weeks.

Winter Sport Update – COVID procedures The media reports of recent days concerning off-site gatherings for Independent Schools and the uncertainty surrounding spectators at venues has highlighted the numerous variables which have to be considered when our College is showcased within the community. The NSW Premier has stated; "Schools, in particular non-government schools, cannot undertake those extra-curricular activities that you do outside of a pandemic — and I can't make that message stronger." She said institutions needed to make sure there were no off-site gatherings where mingling could occur.

The health advice and statement from the NSW Premier has made it clear that we need to practice restraint and adhere to the recommendations offered by the Government.

As a consequence of this directive the College has decided to suspend rugby fixtures for the moment, including our planned fixture against St Stanislaus College this weekend. There will be no rugby this weekend. We remain hopeful that in the coming weeks that we can re-organise fixtures against local schools, should restrictions allow this.

We have implemented the Active Afternoons program to ensure our students are able to be involved in structured activities which contribute to their physical and mental health, in our own controlled environment. In these unprecedented times, it is as important as ever for the students to remain active and connected to their peer groups. This has been achieved through the variety of activities we have provided and the continued development of our core sports programs during this difficult period.

We aim to provide an opportunity for the rugby players to engage in some internal 7 a side and 10 a side games during active afternoons. the training efforts and team development we have achieved has been to no avail.

We are extremely proud of the manner in which our boys have approached this very unusual and unprecedented season with constant change. We look forward to their ongoing support with the training activities and internal fixtures that will be organised in the coming weeks.

We also extend our best wishes to the Year 12 boys as they approach their trial HSC exams.

COVID procedures Local Sport Again, we remind players and parents that we need to abide by the COVID procedures for the local Bathurst community sport associations and take extra care at weekend matches. We are extremely fortunate to be able to have our students playing community based sports and doing our small bit by following the protocols and procedures is essential. Whilst the Hockey, Soccer and Netball all have slight differences in their procedures for the venues that are used on the weekends, the general COVID restrictions are the same.

DO NOT ATTEND sport fixtures if you are:

• unwell or had any flu-like symptoms, or

• been in contact with a known case of COVID-19 in the past 14 days, or

• been overseas or to an identified hot spot or exposed to someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, or

• any sudden loss of smell or loss of taste, or

• are at a high risk from a health perspective, including the elderly and those with pre-existing medical heath conditions.

On weekends at matches – arrive just before your game (warm up at home), have only one adult spectator and no siblings, be sure to sign in that you are at the ground using the associations procedures, do not share water bottles, maintain social distancing requirements, follow the directions of the sport association and leave straight after the game. We thank you for your assistance with these restrictions.

Scots All Saints Swim Academy With the approaching swimming season, we are excited to announce the formation of the Scots All Saints Swimming Academy. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the launch of this program earlier in the year and the continued page 6

Strength and Conditioning Training Opportunities We remind students of the opportunity for Strength and Conditioning training on the Senior Campus in the Hunter Sports Centre Session 1 from 3.30 pm to 4.15 pm and Session 2 from 4.15 pm to 5.00 pm on Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s. Our strength and conditioning coach Luke Newman will welcome new students over the age of 13 years.

JS & MS Sport Mrs Kay Nelson Coordinator of Sport K-8 With inclement conditions making it difficult for Sports Conveners last weekend, there was still plenty of sport on offer. Our Junior School soccer and netball teams continue to improve their game sense as they progress through the season. The enthusiasm and development displayed out on the courts/fields during training and matches is the ultimate reward for coaches. Please refer to the match reports here (please click here).

The Middle School soccer teams have had no shortage of games within the past 4 weeks with some teams playing up to nine matches in this time. With little recovery time between games, it is important that our players take the time to warm-up effectively at home and it is just as important to cool down post play.

Our Middle School hockey teams have had some competitive matches in recent weeks. Their coaches have been particularly pleased with the girls’ attitude and their willingness to play cohesively as a team. This Saturday the two SASC U/15 teams will battle it out against each other in what will be a terrific display of friendly rivalry.

During Active Afternoons, our dance instructors from the Bathurst Academy of Dance have been busy choreographing enjoyable group routines for the students. It is with great delight that these dance groups will have the opportunity to showcase their skills by performing in the Online Bathurst Eisteddfod- dance section. The polished dance routines will be videoed at school during an Active Afternoon session and forwarded to the Bathurst Eisteddfod committee for judging.

SASC 13 RED SASC 13 BLUE Knees and ankles are the most commonly injured body parts of netballers and most of these injuries occur when landing. The Netball Australia’s knee program is designed to prevent these injuries occurring. Mrs Pearce is spending the first 20 minutes of each Active Afternoon session taking the netballers through a warm-up that incorporates the knees program with the aim of educating the girls on correct landing techniques.

Miss Ella Lewis, an experienced representative Bathurst netballer and ex-student will work with the Junior School netball coaches during their training session on Friday 28 August. The girls will enjoy Ella’s enthusiasm for netball and will certainly gain from her wealth of knowledge.

Famous Australian and Bathurst local cycling legend Mark Renshaw, has been a most welcomed visitor to the Active Afternoon cycling group. Working with Mr Anthony Le Couteur, Mark has imparted his extensive experience and knowledge of cycling with the students and has reinforced the joy that this sport can bring regardless of one’s ability. The students were thrilled to participate in the array of activities that Mark and Mr Le Couteur had planned for them and they look forward to Mark’s returned visit on Thursday 13 August.

We remind all families to continue their Covid-safe routines surrounding sporting fixtures throughout the week.

Year 12 Student Leadership team

Valentine's Day Fundraiser The Year 12 student leadership team at Scots All Saints College chose to raise money for Ronald McDonald House as part of their 2020 Valentine’s Day Fundraiser. This year, we raised over $400 on the Scots Campus by selling carnations to the students on Valentine’s Day. The students were able to buy these flowers for their friends and loved ones and the student leadership team delivered the flowers to the recipients.

The flowers could also be sent anonymously.

The whole idea of the fundraiser was to fundraise for people who needed it the most during unfortunate and trialling times.

By holding it on Valentine’s Day, we were able to recognise the main ideas of the day (love, compassion, empathy, support, kindness etc.) and put it towards something beneficial, making a positive difference in the community where we can.

We chose Ronald McDonald House, Orange as this is a charity that is very close to the heart of our College

community, as one of our previous students underwent significant experiences that were no doubt difficult for them and their family.

We had heard that they had been staying at Ronald McDonald House during treatments, so we chose to support them as we are well aware of the fantastic work they do in helping families with a comforting place to stay near hospital to get the help they need.

This is the second time this Valentine’s Day fundraiser has been held at Scots All Saints College and the student leadership team hope the fundraiser will become an annual event.

I would like to thank our school parent, Mrs Lesley Kidd and the team at The Flower Box, Bathurst for donating all of the flowers we sold. Without their kindness and support we would not have been as successful as we were. I would also like to thank the school community for supporting our fundraiser. They were all willing to raise money for families who are going through very difficult times in their lives.

At a special ceremony held this week at Scots Campus, our Year 12 leaders, Ms Tracey Leaf, Head of Scots Campus were joined by Ms Rebecca Walsh, Executive Officer of Ronald McDonald House, Orange to accept the ‘big cheque’ of over $430.15.

Ms Walsh was very appreciative of the generous donation which will assist to “help keep the doors open in Orange and provide all the essentials needed for families in their care.” Ms Walsh kindly invited the Year 12 students and other from the Scots All Saints College community to visit to see the joy and relief on the families’ faces when they come to stay at Ronald McDonald House.

Meet & Greet in Millthorpe Our 'Meet & Greet' program with Head of College, Mr John Weeks and local parents kicked off last evening with a wonderful turnout in Millthorpe.

Although the format was a little different this year due to COVID-19, we hosted two full sessions at Slow Wine Co. It was lovely to catch up again socially with some of our current parents and welcome the many new parents from the Millthorpe and Blayney area who are interested in enrolling their children at the College. The next ‘Meet & Greet” forum will be held in Orange on Wednesday 26 August from 6:00 pm.

Registrations in advance are essential to enable us to plan these events with the venue within COVID-19 restrictions.

Young Archie Competition 2020 selected for this public exhibition. 20 Artworks (Winners and Finalists) were selected to go on display in the Gallery from over 150 entries from across the state. These will be on display in the Gallery alongside a digital display of all entries that were selected for the competition. Students from Scots All Saints whose work will be on the digital display are also to be congratulated for their wonderful artwork and efforts.

These students are:

Congratulations to Lillian Milgate whose self-portrait has been selected as a finalist for the Young Archie Award held at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery from this Saturday.

Lillian’s artwork, which was created for a Visual Arts assessment task, uses collage, paint and photography together in this colourful and vibrant portrait of herself whilst training in the pool. Karralee uncovered During the mid-year break, work continued to restore and maintain Karralee- the 1874-built administration building on the Scots Campus. The work temporarily opened up a number of areas in the building that are not normally accessible, and provided the opportunity for some archaeology.

Removing the damaged plaster from the walls downstairs uncovered two of the old fireplaces. When the floorboards were lifted to install new electricity and computer cables, several reasonably well preserved items were found; the rooms on the northern side of the building not having as many issues with dampness as some of the other rooms.

A suede boot found underneath Mr Weeks’s office by electrician Mike Breen and Maintenance Supervisor Jeff Reeks, may have been left there deliberately when Karralee was built. It is believed a boot was left under the floorboards by superstitious builders who believed it would bring good luck. Unfortunately there is no firm dating evidence from which to make a conclusion about its precise age.

In Mrs McDonnell’s office, several items were found by Joshua Whiley, son and apprentice of Mick Whiley the builder who carried out much of the preservation work. When one of the finds was posted on the The Scots School Old Boys and Girls Facebook page. Angus McLoy responded that there had been a trapdoor in the floor of that particular room. At the time, boarders lived in Karralee and they would often put things below the floor through the trapdoor. If anyone lost a left foot rugby boot in Karralee before 1967, we can report that Joshua Whiley found what is left of it! Food containers were also found, including a Nestlé condensed milk tube that was in good condition. It was pre-metric: 7 ounces.

Returning to old items, Joshua also found some items that look like building waste from when Karralee was constructed.

There were offcuts from the timber laths to which the wet plaster on the ceiling was attached. There were also pieces of slate from the original roof, one of which had been used as a spatula by the 1870s plasterers. What could be a 19th Century saw blade has also been found. Cleaning and preservation work is currently being carried out on it.

A number of items uncovered during the renovation work on Karralee will be displayed in The Scots Museum.

Two new display cases arrived around the same time the work was being carried out.

It is certainly with great deal of disappointment we inform you that our 2020 Literature Festival has finally been cancelled. We had been very hopeful that in moving the June date out to August, the Covid situation might have improved. Given the current state of affairs in New South Wales, we have decided to cancel for this year. We are very hopeful that the wonderful line-up of speakers we had booked will all be able to participate in 2021.

On a more positive note, our ‘Space to Read’ photo competition which was originally part of our Festival lead up, has now been extended until next Friday 21st of August. This competition has hit new heights featuring on the front page of the Bathurst Life magazine’s latest edition thanks to our very own Leo Roving Reporter!

We are so excited about the wonderful photos students have shared with us, featuring either their favourite reading spot or something a little more unusual! This library display has certainly inspired the students as they eagerly watch out for new additions of themselves, friends and even teachers.

We look forward to more entries showing your ‘Space to Read’.

COVID-19 Update Keeping our College Community safe

What you need to know NESA and schools are following the advice from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee, which is also supported by NSW Health.

We are continually monitoring the Public Health advice on COVID-19 and are working in the background to ensure the health and safety of our College community. As a friendly reminder to families about children who are presenting with coughs and colds should stay at home if they are unwell. We ask that you please follow the NSW Health guidelines and keep your children home and have them tested for COVID-19. Even if they have mild symptoms of cold or flu, they should not be at school and need to be cleared of COVID-19 through testing. We all know how difficult it can be to juggle sick children and other commitments but in the current climate sending a child to school with even mild symptoms will result in multiple other families having to selfisolate and be tested if the infection is passed on.

It’s important that we all look out for each other and do the right thing.

Your school has the authority to determine the number, type and weighting of formal school-based assessment tasks.

The written exams start on Tuesday 20 October, and the timetable is now available.

You’ll get your results on Friday 18 December,

by SMS, email and online.
