Year 12 Farewells

Under normal circumstances, Year 12 students and families would be starting to look forward to end of year valedictory assemblies and dinners. Due to the restrictions on assemblies, gatherings, singing and dancing this will need to be different this year.

The College has been working on how, where and when we will publicly farewell our Year 12 students so we can acknowledge individual achievement and the groups collective contribution to the College.

To this end, we will be working closely with Year 12 students and NSW Health. We hope to have a plan for the Year 12 Valedictory assembly and dinner approved by the end of August.

COVID-19 Health precautions to keep our College and wider community safe It’s so important that we all follow the COVID 19 Health and Safety protocols at this time. As much as I love coming to school each day, I myself have had to follow these protocols this week after presenting with very mild symptoms.

Students and Parents/Carers with ANY COVID-19 symptoms (even very mild symptoms) should not attend school and are not permitted to enter our campuses for any reason until they have been tested and cleared of COVID-19.

Students and parents/carers with ANY symptoms of COVID-19 must attend a testing centre and be tested.

If any member of a student or parent/carer’s household are tested for COVID-19, then all members of that household should remain off campus until a negative result is returned. After the negative result is returned all members of the household who are free from symptoms are welcome to return to campus as per the normal protocols currently in place.

Together, we can ensure the health and safety of our community.

School Photos All Kindergarten – Year 4 classes will have their photo taken on Tuesday 11 August. All Saints Campus sibling photos will also be taken on this day. Students should be immaculately dressed in their winter uniform on this day.

Pre K 2-day class will also have their photo taken on Tuesday 11 August whilst Pre K 3 and the 4/5 day class will have their photo taken on Wednesday 12 August.

Scots Campus siblings will travel to the All Saints Campus on Wednesday 12 August for sibling photos.

Any students having a sibling photo on this day should be dressed in their full winter uniform as well.

Stage 2 National Tree Day Last Friday, Stage 2 students connected with nature and planted some local native species as part of National Tree Day. Students worked in teams to restore some habitat on the southern edge of the All Saints Campus. Students planted some Eucalyptus (blakely's red gum) along with some casuarinas and a range of local acacias and melaleucas.

National Tree Day is a call to action for all Australians to put their hands in the earth and give back to their community. Each year, about 300,000 people volunteer their time to engage in environmental activities that educate individuals about the world around them.

Stage 2 had a great time getting outdoors and giving our environment a helping hand.

Jeans for Genes Day This Friday 7 July is Jeans for Genes Day. Students may wear jeans/trackies to school and bring in a $2 donation to support Children’s Medical Research Institute.

Narrative Writing All of the Junior School students are learning about narrative writing this term. Teachers have been upskilled in a program - known as Brightpath, which will enable them to analyse student writing samples and compare them with a range of exemplars. This will assist teachers in tracking growth over time as well as zeroing in on what aspects of text writing they should focus on next.

Mrs Parsons Leave Mrs Parsons will be taking leave from her 4/5 day class this term. Her final day will be Friday 7 August.

Mrs Parsons will be replaced by the very experienced and familiar Mrs Liz Rolfe. Mrs Parsons will return to the class at the start of Term 4.

Premier’s Reading Challenge Not long now! Reading Records need to be completed by August 28! Please record all books online before this date and try not to leave it to the last minute to avoid delays due to heavy website traffic. Happy reading everyone!

Pre-Kindergarten at All Saints Campus are exploring Community Helpers this term. We were excited to watch the cement mixer pouring our new path to the bus stop and have been learning about fire safety this week. We also love caring for our chickens and are excited to collect the eggs each day.

Jeans for Genes Day Tomorrow, Friday 7 August, all students in the Junior and Middle Schools will be participating in Jeans for Genes Day. The Children’s Medical Research Institute uses the funds raised to support their research to save children’s lives.

Their research has helped eliminate Rubella, introduced care for premature infants, and developed microsurgery techniques for organ transplants that save lives every day. 1 in 20 kids face a birth defect or genetic disease, and 30% of children’s hospital admissions are due to genetic disorders, so there is still much research to be done.

Students are asked to come to school in casual clothes, wearing jeans and donate $2 to help support the Children’s Medical Research Institute.

James Knight, is a best-selling adult non-fiction author and award-winning TV, radio and newspaper journalist who has worked in many places across the world. He conducts workshops, including at some of Australia’s top private schools, and with some of our country’s most disadvantaged youth. In addition to Australian students, he has worked with groups in India, the USA, England and New Zealand. James is offering writing classes after school on a Monday for one hour at a cost of $10 per session. Please contact Middle School Reception for more details.

Police Liaison Officer Visit This week we hosted our local Police Liaison Officer who spoke to the Year 5 and 6 students about appropriate use of technology and social media. Timely and relevant education is the key to assist our adolescent students to navigate their way through the tricky world of digital media.

There were lots of words of advice and valuable lessons delivered from our Police Liaison Officers.

Together everyone achieves more Last term, Mr Andrew Weeding (Knox Grammar School) spent a day with our Stage 6 students and staff sharing what he has learned while completing his PhD on ‘Social Learning Theory’. An extremely simplified summary of SLT is ‘Together Everyone Achieves More’.

Both the students and staff found the information provided by Mr Weeding to be interesting and inspirational. In the past couple of weeks I’ve been thrilled to hear from students how they have been putting into practice the principles outlined in those meetings. Students are gathering regularly in small groups to work on assessments, prepare for exams and assist each other with understanding concepts presented in their courses of study.

As professional educators there isn’t much we find more delightful than the image of students huddled together, expanding their knowledge and understanding because they want to learn and because they understand that by doing so together, everyone achieves more! If you have a student in Year 11 or 12, ask them about STL and how it is changing the way they approach their studies.

Homework Centre As a service to our students, the Cameron Library has traditionally been open from 8:00 am each morning. We are pleased to announce additional hours for the ‘Homework Centre’ and academic support for students seeking help.

Mrs O’Neill will now be in the library on Mondays (from 8:00 am) and Thursdays (2nd half lunch) to assist students with assessment tasks, study skills, time management and planning. Teachers from other departments will also be available on a roster basis to assist students.

Mr Jones is available in the library on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (from 8:00 am). Mrs Mitchell and Mrs Mackay will supervise the library until 4:30 pm each afternoon. As the last buses are still not running, students who wish to stay after school to access the Homework Centre will need to organise their own transport home. Sports Uniform The College Uniform Shop is well stocked with the new SASC sports uniform. A significant number of students are still wearing incorrect shorts, tracksuits and ‘hoodies’ to school. Please assist us in establishing and maintaining a high standard by ensuring your child is in the correct uniform.

Sport Mr Scott Gardner Head of Sport

With the commencement of community sport this winter, the College has emerged as a significant contributor to the framework of local competitions. We have a large College presence of teams who are playing on courts and fields each week in Bathurst which is wonderful to see.

The Senior School boasts four Hockey teams and seven Netball teams in the modified competitions that we are engaged in. The girls’ enthusiasm and commitment to training has proven positive as the teams have navigated the first two weeks of fixtures with some nail-biting results. The girls are inspired to represent their school reflecting our growing community spirit. “Go Lions!” As the girls develop their confidence and gel with their teams, performances will further showcase the teamwork and developing skills they are working on during Active Afternoons and Thursday training sessions.

Our teams have been well supported by their respective coaches who have demonstrated a positive and up beat approach to training during this unprecedented period.

The girls are to be congratulated on their attention to detail and diligence with adhering to the COVID19 protocols and guidelines outlined and mandated by the Hockey and Netball associations respectively.

A reminder is given to parents to abide by the COVID procedures of the local spectators in particular the one parent, one sibling in attendance as spectators and to sign in at the complexes.

The Rugby program continues to gather momentum as we transition to contact and live contests at training. The students have enjoyed the physicality of training and mate ship that embodies the game.

The Saturday skills development and training mornings have been well supported by the lads.

These sessions have allowed the squads to further bond and develop the vital skills which are necessary to compete on the rugby field. The energy and positive efforts from all the players is evident to see during these training days.

Our coaching staff are preparing the boys for the fixtures we are coordinating to contest within our local community. I look forward to announcing further details of these fixtures when the draw and venues have been finalised.

Performing Arts Academy news

Expanding the brain The Arts have many benefits on the developing brain of a child as they explore sound and symbols individually and in large ensembles.

Each week, the inclusive string program across Years 2-4 engages many young minds in the Junior School as they learn the violin, viola and cello. Yesterday, we began work on a Bruno Mars hit – Count On Me, which will be performed by our Junior School Orchestra. The students really took to it and across their sectionals, with the help of our passionate staff, they emerged with something special. We are thrilled to perform this work for our upcoming Digital Showcase this term. It will be exciting to watch an orchestra of over 90 students in action.

and fingerboard when learning to play violin, viola or cello. This acoustic action is then regulated by the brain and edited with expression.

Each day at the Music Centre we witness this process occurring as our students translate symbols to sounds. I hope you too are enjoying watching your children at home expanding their brains as they develop their instrumental skills.

We are often taken aback by the complexity, technical precision and perfection required as indiviuals come together in large ensembles but something extra special happens when many young minds play as one.

Students in Lithgow Pre-Kindergarten have been exploring different workers in the community this term. To explore fire safety we had students come dressed as firefighters or dress in the colours of a fire. We also practised our fire drill.

A valuable lesson in cyber safety

Thank you to the local Online Safety Officer from NSW Police who provided valuable information for our Year 5 and 6 students this week about how to stay safe and protect yourself online.

As most students are online using the internet or playing games at some point during the week, the advice provided was very timely and beneficial.

Parents should also be aware of the activities children are engaging in online and have security and monitoring provisions in place to keep children safe.

COVID-19 Health precautions to keep our College and wider community safe With the outbreak of COVID-19 in Victoria and the resulting clusters of cases within NSW, Term 3 has not brought the slight relief from the pandemic that we had hoped for. Our dedicated staff are committed to ensuring that the educational and co-curricular activities of our students are as normal and as uninterrupted as possible within the recommended NSW Public Health protocols.

We continue to proactively review our College activities to ensure that we are well-prepared. As always, we will keep you informed of any new developments or modifications to our school environment.

COVID-19 Management group formally appointed A COVID-19 Management Committee has been appointed to oversee everything COVID-19 related at Scots All Saints. This Committee will meet regularly to review COVID-19 health and safety protocols and ensure that our response to the COVID-19 Pandemic continues to be of the highest possible standard.

This registration was finalised recently upon completion of our COVID Safe risk assessments and protocol approvals.

New signage to support this new government compliance standard will be placed in various locations throughout the College campuses including Reception offices to show we are compliant with the highest standards of COVID-19 risk management practices.

Face masks Like many Colleges, we are closely watching the Public health advice with regards to face masks.

To this end, we have contacted the uniform shop and have made arrangements for a limited number of plain navy fabric face masks to be made available for purchase in the near future. We will update families when the face masks arrive.

Staying home if unwell Thank you to the parents and students who have been ‘doing the right thing’ by staying home and being tested for COVID-19 if any flu-like symptoms are present. We understand that it can take anywhere from hours to days to receive a negative result and be cleared to return to school and work. If this is the case for your child, please do not hesitate to contact us through connect@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au so we can make arrangements through the Class teacher or Heads of Departments to ensure school work is provided so children can continue to learn when they are well enough.
