A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Trial HSC The Trial HSC begins in Week 5 and runs across two weeks, from Monday, 15 August until Friday, 26 August 2022. Year 12 is busily revising and revising again in the lead-up to what will help them prepare for the ‘real deal’, which is being held in October.

We wish them all the very best in their preparations and remind them to check in with their teachers and peers if they have any queries about the course content. We are all here to support you!

COVID – Update and Masks You would have read in my COVID-19 update distributed earlier this week that we are following the Chief Medical Officer’s advice and encouraging students and staff to continue wearing facemasks – especially when inside. We have facemasks available in various locations around the College. Please ask if you need one, and we’d appreciate parents encouraging their children to follow this advice if they are able to.

Students who travel on the College buses will also be encouraged to wear masks, and those over 12 years who travel on public transport will already be doing this.

2023 Musical Announcement Calling all pirates, cabin boys and ladies in waiting.

Scots All Saints College Performing Arts Academy’s 2023 musical will be “Pirates of Penzance.” In partnership with Dr Jim Coyle, Associate Professor of Composition and Education from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, our production will be a modern adaptation of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic. It will showcase the creative, performing and musical talents of students as we blend the arts across the largest team in the College. The world premiere of this bespoke performance will be a new take on an old classic that all will love.

Farewell to Mr Le Couteur Head of Boarding, Mr Ant Le Couteur, finishes up with the College on Friday, 19 August, and we wish him a warm farewell as he embarks on a new role with Geelong Grammar School in Victoria. Mr Le Couteur has been a leading light on the Boarding team, tackling all challenges with a positive can-do attitude, and his presence will be greatly missed.

There will be an opportunity to say our goodbyes with a special Boarders dinner being held next Thursday evening in the Dining Hall.

God, like a Dentist Have you ever gone to Church and been captured by the sermon? Last Sunday was that for me. The minister Bryson Smith is currently preaching through the biblical book of Isaiah. The tension in the book is between the people rejecting God, His discipline followed by His forgiveness, love and grace. In a poetic way, chapter after chapter goes back and forth as these are interconnected with each other.

Although on the surface, you might be thinking to yourself, I cannot see how this could be a good message.

Bryson then shared an illustration of his dentist. The basic notion he wanted to communicate was that he trusts his dentist implicitly. When his dentist tells Bryson his teeth need work, and the cost is more than what Bryson wants to pay, he knows his dentist has his best interests at heart.

For me, over many years, I went through several dentists who I didn’t completely trust or who were quite brutal in the way they worked. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I found a wonderful man named Simon. He had done some amazing dentistry with my wife and kids, and she thought I should see him. I reluctantly went for a check-up and discovered that he was a long-lost friend

who I had grown up with. He was there in my life all along, but I had never committed to him.

Bryson’s illustration conveyed the idea that just like a dentist, who at times has to inflict some pain and, at times, a cost that we are not always willing to pay, it is in our best interests because the alternative of leaving the problem will cause us greater pain down the track.

Bryson’s illustration is a brief glimpse of what God is doing in the lives of his people in the book of Isaiah Through the wickedness and subsequent discipline expressed in the book of Isaiah, we see a promise emerge. The promise that God is going send a sacrificial saviour to deal with evil and the chasm that exists between God and ourselves. Isaiah writes, God shall be born to a ‘virgin’ (7:14) … he shall be called ‘Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace ‘ (9:6) … and in time we discover that this person will be one who will bear the brunt of God’s judgement and discipline on human evil on our behalf so that we can become the objects of God’s love – ‘He was pierced for our transgressions’ (53:3).

Within a world where there are tensions in the South China Sea, war in the Ukraine, and environmental issues, among other things, God does work globally, but even more importantly, He works individually and personally with you and me, addressing the issues within our own lives. This sometimes means allowing us to experience discomfort and pain, all for the express purpose of drawing us closer to Him and preparing us for His great Kingdom to come. Amen.

Jeans for Genes Day Tomorrow, Friday 5 August, the Junior School students will be supporting Jeans for Genes Day. Funds raised go directly to Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) to help their scientists find cures for genetic diseases, including cancer and other serious conditions affecting 1 in 20 children. Students may wear mufty clothes with their jeans. Students can bring a gold coin donation which we will send to the CMRI. Students may wish to bring shorts or tracksuit pants to change into for Active Afternoons.

Archives, Australia Botanic Gardens, National Museum, Questacon, Dinosaur Museum and the Royal Australian Mint. On the way, we are visiting the Cowra Prisoner of War Camp. This camp forms part of the Year 5 HSIE curriculum and is also a great opportunity for the students to spend some time away with their peers.

Thursday 11 August: 1WA, 4W, Prep Banksia, 6N Learning Assets A fortnight ago, I began writing about how we seek to provide a contemporary education that seeks to assist students to thrive in all aspects of their 21st-century life. One way we can do this is by developing ‘Learning Assets’ in our young people. Kath Murdoch writes extensively about these assets in her book ‘The Power of Inquiry.’ Throughout my fortnightly section in the Roar this term, I will focus on one asset which seeks to develop students as learners both now and beyond school.

Self- Management Self- Management is all about learning independently and making wise decisions about learning. Working towards personal goals and seeking to continually improve as a learner is further evidence of good self-management skills. Below you will find a few strategies and terms that may be useful to discuss on a needs basis with your child/ children as we work together to develop this concept of self-management: plan, organise, persist, reflect, time-management, resilient, responsible, impulse control, focus and awareness.

The students have had question and answer seminars with the teachers, and the Year 10 students and parents have had the opportunity to ask questions and seek information during the Student Led Conferences, with the correspondence sent out by the College and through the Zoom information sessions. We look forward to reviewing the preliminary subject choice data in the coming weeks and planning the options that best fit the College staffing model, timetable restrictions and the student's needs.

COVID Advice

On Tuesday, Mrs Mary Smith, our HSC presiding officer, came in to talk to the Year 12 students regarding the processes and procedures for the examinations coming up. Again, this year we are employing the services of Mary to help with our HSC Trial exams in weeks 5 and 6.

While getting an external examination officer is not required, we see great benefit in our students becoming familiar not only with the procedures for the HSC exams but also familiar with the environment that the examinations will take place. Mary gave a lot of reassurance to the students about the procedures and laid down the rules. She also answered quite a few questions that the students had and helped ease some of their worries. Mr Weeks also encouraged the students to work hard for the remaining weeks and to try their best and enjoy their final months of Year 12.

We encourage our students and families to be familiar with the current advice regarding COVID-19.

An updated information letter was distributed by Mr Weeks on Tuesday. Any student who missed collecting their RAHT tests last week or perhaps in need of a few more is encouraged to come to the Deputy Head’s Office to collect. We have a good supply of them.

Our Year 12 students and parents/carers are encouraged to check out the resources prepared by NESA to support our Year 12 students as they approach the Trial HSC and HSC Examinations. The resources include tips on study, resources for parents and carers, looking after yourself during the exams, university information and seeking urgent help.

RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY Keep your eyes on your local sporting association’s Facebook pages this weekend for any weather updates. Our local sporting grounds (particularly Proctor Park) could take on a bit too much water over the next day or two, which could make them unplayable.

Kataleya fought two four-minute fights with girls in a higher age, weight and belt (experience) categories. She fought extremely well in her first fight and was able to demonstrate her ability, tenacity and determination. Her primary objective for her first fight was simply to “do it” and prove to herself that she is not afraid, can defend herself and be the most confident she can be.

Great job Kataleya! You rock!

Kataleya’s dad, Luke, runs our Junior School Brazilian Ju Jitsu program during Active Afternoons. Luke is very excited about our Junior School ‘beasts’ who are picking up this awesome sport really quickly!

SENIOR CAMPUS RUN CLUB IS MOVING Our Run Club is moving to Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:20 pm.

Run by Mr Gillmer (quite literally), our weekly Run Club is an awesome opportunity for students to work on their fitness and get set for the upcoming Athletics carnival.

Equestrian News

place. This is a fabulous result and such a huge achievement.

Our equestrian team were amazing during the holidays.

Jack Clancy, who competes mainly in Australian Stock Horse classes, has just been announced the winner of the highest U18 national youth dressage pointscore for 2021 – this is a huge achievement, and we are very proud.

Over the holidays, we had various students compete over a wide range of disciplines with outstanding results.

Victoria Wythe took both her horses down to SIEC (Sydney International Equestrian Centre) to compete at the NSW State Interschool Championships.

She placed a very respectable eighth and tenth in a competitive Elementary Championship on Bandalene Truman. She was also entered to compete in the Showjumping Championship, but due to the very wet weather, the rest of the competition was cancelled. Victoria has agisted her horses at the equestrian centre for many years and has been involved in all of our lessons by our wonderful coaches and represented the

OTHER NEWS College many times – we have enjoyed watching her grow and develop into an amazing rider over this time.

Molly Corbett also competed in the 95cm Eventing at the NSW State Interschool Championships.

In horribly wet conditions, Molly and her horse, Quirran Lea Strait Skip, performed extremely well, coming fifth out of a very competitive class. This made them reserve for the National Interschool Championships, and recently Molly was offered (and accepted) a place in this team. We look forward to her results at the Nationals. Congratulations Molly.

Our equestrian centre is once again full with lessons each week in showjumping by our Level 2 Coach, Jennifer Wood and flat work with Level 1 Coach, Sarah Farraway. The progress of each and every one of the students is a privilege to watch. I would like to thank all of our riders who support this program which has progressed tremendously in the past three years.

Many of our riders will be preparing for events, and we are all looking forward to the Interschool Horse Extravaganza (ISHE) in Tamworth later in the year.

THE SCOTS COLLEGE BRANCH SCHOOL – CREATING A CAMPUS The Karralee Boys who attended The Scots College Branch School have left many stories about life there in the period 19421945. Because the Presbyterian Church was leasing the property until the war ended, there was no incentive to spend any money.

The grounds were not well kept. Karralee Boy George Rowlands recorded that the long grass was often burnt off to discourage the snakes. An early project was to create a sports field. The boys enthusiastically undertook to burn off the grass on what is now the Senior Campus car park on a day of a strong north-westerly wind. Olivia's Mitchell Young Voices performance

Congratulations to Olivia Brabham for being part of the Mitchell Young Voices, connected with the Mitchell Conservatorium of Music.

Students from eight to fifteen years of age were allowed to participate in a professional production with Opera Australia, to give them a taste of professional performing.

What an amazing opportunity!

BOOK WEEK 22-26 August 2022 The Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) is once again holding Book Week during week 6.

The CBCA has shortlisted a number of books & these shortlisted books will be available in the library for borrowing during book week.

Winners in the various categories – Early Childhood, Young Readers, Older Readers, CBCA Picture Book of the Year, Eve Pownall Award & New Illustrator, will be announced on the third Friday of August.

During Book Week, there will be a number of activities that the students can participate in; colour in competition, dress up in their favourite book character, a reading challenge, book donation, costume
