A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Staffing Announcements for 2023 Our current Head of Science, Mr Peter O’Neill, has announced his retirement from teaching at the end of 2022. Whilst there will be many more opportunities to reflect on and celebrate Mr O’Neill’s role at the College, we have been busy searching for his replacement.

We are pleased to announce that Mrs. Cassandra Pearce has been named as the new Head of Science, including STEM, starting in 2023. Mrs Pearce will continue on as a Stage 5 Team Leader until the end of the year and is excited for the chance to continue to develop the Science Department courses and develop links with STEM concepts.

We are also proud to announce that Mrs Angela Davis will be taking on a new challenge in 2023 as our Senior Campus Teacher Librarian. Mrs Davis looks forward to sharing her love of reading with the students and is excited about the possibility of introducing new programs and resources to the library.

COVID – Update and Masks The latest strain of the COVID-19 variant seems to be extremely contagious. Anecdotal reports from members of the community suggest that when one person in the group gets it, it is likely to infect others quickly. reality, we may find that this is the case. We remind our school community to continue to be vigilant with hygiene and to follow the guidelines set by our health authorities and government. At the moment, students and staff are encouraged to wear masks inside.

We have been provided with more RAHTs for distribution to all students and staff. These will be given out over the coming weeks across both campuses and can be used when symptomatic or a close contact.

Long COVID and associated fatigue is a real thing and is affecting a number of people post their acute infection period, so it’s well worth avoiding this disease if we can.

Tyler Puzicha – World Championships We pass on our best wishes to Tyler Puzicha (Year 12), who leaves next week on her journey to the UCI Junior Track World Cycling Championships in Tel Aviv, Israel. Before departing Australia, the national team will undergo some training camps in Sydney and Adelaide and then finish with acclimatisation camps in Israel before the Championships. We look forward to hearing about her journey when she returns later in the term.

From the Chaplain Rev. Michael Bennett Chaplain

Living with integrity and rising above 'survival' mode I have been reading an interesting book titled: The Seven Types of Atheism by the atheist author John Gray. In one chapter, a phrase he used jumped out at me: “The human mind is programmed for survival, not truth.” He argues from a Darwinian perspective that when a person is under pressure, they will choose survival over truth.

This concept troubled me. In many respects, I see that tension playing out in the classroom and within my own life: there can be overwhelming pressure to lie so that we don’t get in trouble or have to confront the truth of what we may have said or done. But history is littered with people who have risen above the need to survive, and are willing to live for the truth.

Last term in Chapel, we looked at Christianity in Nazi Germany.

There were many people within this setting that believed in speaking the truth. Indeed they were willing to die for what was right – Sophie Scholl, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Betsie Ten Boom, Maximum Kolbe, and many others. Survival for them wasn’t restricted to this mortal life but rather to God’s Great Kingdom to come. This faith is realised in the one they claimed to be the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

Indeed, Jesus himself modelled the approach of putting truth before his earthly survival. In a conversation during his trial, the subject of truth emerged as Governor Pilate examined Jesus to see if he was a threat to the political structures of Rome. In John 18, Jesus points out that he is a King of the eternal world. Pilate laughed. Jesus continued: “For this reason I was born, and came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me!” (John 18:38). Pilate gave a very postmodern response, declaring “What is Truth?” Then to avoid a riot, he proceeded to sign Jesus’ execution orders, even though he declared four times that Jesus was innocent of the charges. Political survival for him was more important than the truth.

The tension between ‘surviving’ (whether that be a difficult situation or just our daily living) versus living according to what is true, noble and right confronts us on an almost daily basis. Part of the difficulty in life is living within the tension between survival and truth.

Fortunately, the one who modelled how we should live and how we should respond to God and each other also points us to self and divine forgiveness and a reassurance of eternal survival (within a deep relationship of love). As stated above, He says, “For this reason I was born, and came into the world, to testify to the truth” (John 18:38). The details of this truth can be discovered through reading and reflecting upon Jesus's words in the Bible. We are all called to a greater purpose than mere survival, and it's never too late to discover what that is. During the holidays, I sent an email to all students in Years 8 and 10 and their parents and carers outlining where to source information and how to go about the process of nominating preferences for electives for 2023.

Visit from Deputy Premier – Mr Paul Toole Last Friday, we had a visit from the Deputy Premier of New South Wales, Mr Paul Toole. He was very interested to see our wonderful Preparatory School facilities and meet the students. Mr Toole also toured through the Innovation Centre, where he was impressed to see the variety of technology resources that are available to the students.

New Carpark Arrangements The lower carpark in front of Esrom House has been resurfaced, and new line markings have been painted on during the recent school holidays. Please note that the carpark now has a Drop Off area to encourage a better flow through the carpark in the morning.

Stage 3 Inter–House Debating Term 3 will see the Stage 3 Inter-house debating competition commence. The debating competition involves all our Stage 3 students, and the mixed teams are being organised by our House Captains. There will be a mix of topics the students will debate over two rounds. Debating develops valuable skills for our students; reasoning, research, public speaking and critical thinking to name a few. I wish all the students luck in their preparations, and the Stage 3 teachers look forward to adjudicating from Week 3.

Cyber Safety Talk – 4 August, 5:30 pm Junior School Campus Library Next week Senior Constable Rachael Joyce will be speaking at the Junior School about Cyber Safety for our students and families. Senior Constable Joyce is a Youth Officer and is experienced in the use of social media and the internet by young people and will have some valuable advice for parents and guardians. Can you please advise if you intend to attend via the Operoo note emailed to families this week.

Parent Teacher Interviews Parent Teacher interviews for Year 4 and Prep Eucalypt and Banksia will be next week in Week 3.

Parents will be required to wear a mask for the interview when inside the classroom.

Careers Advice Mrs Helen Jones Transferable Skills Students need to be reminded that throughout their time at the College and while navigating a couple of years of disrupted learning, they have acquired many important transferable skills that future employers love to see: • resilience • dealing with disappointment & setbacks • patience • teaching themselves new skills online • using online technology for future jobs (ability to work from home) • Working autonomously That’s just to name a few. These are all skills that can be used in future cover letters and resumes.

UON Visit to SASC – Welcoming back Old Girl Abbey Barcham Our lunch and learn series continued this week with a visit from the University of Newcastle, who were represented by their student ambassador Abbey Barcham (ASC 2017). It was wonderful to welcome Abbey back to the College and for our students to see a familiar face who has spread her wings and landed in Newcastle. Abbey presented to our senior students about student life at UON, accommodation, the application process and demystified the challenge of working out what degrees are on offer. It was a great forum for questions and a chance for our students to see what life on the other side of the HSC could look like. We are very fortunate to have strong relationships with a wide range of tertiary providers, giving us first-hand and current information for our students.

University Early Entry Programs.

Many NSW Universities currently have their Early Entry programs open for application. I encourage all Year 12 students to take the time to look at these, and my strongest advice is to apply for as many as you can. They are free to apply for, and you can defer most courses.

Charles Sturt University Round two Advantage early offer program Congratulations to all our Year 12 students who have already received an unconditional offer from CSU. Round two applicants received further offers this week and have secured a wide range of Degrees. From paramedicine to education, from Physiotherapy to Agriculture and Communications to Arts. A reference is a written document or statement from a person you’ve worked for. It usually includes information about the kind of work you undertook and your skills and abilities.

So someone may be willing to write up a reference for you, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you also need to include them as a referee on your resume.

The purpose of references and referees is so employers can cross-check any information you’ve put on your resume to ensure you’re not making anything up.

The benefit of references is that once you have one, you can use it over and over again without needing to worry about it changing. Conversely, the benefit of referees is that they can potentially provide more relevant and up-to-date information.

experience and skills and are willing to vouch for you in a positive way.

Keep in mind you should never put your parents or friends down as references – employers will usually consider them as biased and unreliable. The best referees are people you know in a professional capacity, such as your employer. If you’ve never had a job before, you can include people like teachers, mentors or coaches instead.

If you’re going to add someone as a referee to your resume, make sure you let them know in advance. Not only is it the polite thing to do, it also means they can be prepared in case a potential employer calls them for information.

Ensure your referee details are always kept up to date – if an employer can’t get in touch with your referees, this might affect your application.

Who can I get a reference from?

If you’d like to add some references to your resume, they don’t just need to come from people you’ve been employed by.

If you’re undertaking work experience, it’s a good idea to ask if you can get a reference at the end of your placement. Or if you do any sort of volunteer work, this is great to get a reference for too.

If you have no work experience (either paid or unpaid), you can also ask for what’s known as a ‘character reference’. Obviously, this won’t include any details of your work but can tell a potential employer more about the type of person you are.

References are most credible if they’re written or typed on a company letterhead, and also signed by the person who wrote the reference. Keep in mind that employers might contact the business or person you’ve received a reference from to make sure it’s legit.

From the All Saints' College archives

‘THE DON’ - DON AMOS WIBURD OAM. Don was associated with schoolboy sports for most of his adult life after graduating from Wagga Wagga Teacher’s College in 1949. Don began his association with Bathurst schools in 1952, where he taught at the Bathurst Migrant Camp, then The Scots School from 1953 to 1976, St Stanislaus’ College from 1977 to 1988, and then assisted in coaching Rugby, Athletics and Cricket at All Saints’ from 1991.

He was the name behind the Wiburd Shield, competitions in Rugby and Cricket, and was very involved in the Western Associated Schools Competitions as the inaugural secretary for over 15 years. He was the Foundation Secretary of the New South Wales Country Schools Rugby Union and held that organization together from 1995 to 2005, as well as the founder of the Fester Shield for Year 8 and the Yeates Shield for Open Schoolboys Rugby. Hundreds of Schools throughout country NSW have competed in these competitions since.

Don also started the Douglas Shield for Country Schools Cricket Open Teams and was the main organizer of the Combined Schools Combined team, which plays each year in the NSW Championships. He was particularly proud of the fact that several students from his school rugby teams went on to play for Australia at school and national level. In the later years, he even developed an interest in girls’ netball and would be seen on a bitter winter afternoon making note of players’ tactics and skills in a sport he would never admit to enjoying! Don was also the Patron for All Saints’ Rugby and did not

miss a game held on the Watson Oval –seating himself on the hill ready to make comments after, ”Good in parts, I suppose…..”.

Don wrote as coach of one team in 1993 “Rugby provides, among other things, boys with the opportunity to extend themselves to the full and stretch their powers, to put away fear, to keep their heads and to participate in the shared endeavours of a team”. Hundreds of boys benefitted from his wisdom, knowledge and Christian values. He continued to coach both Cricket and Rugby for over ten years but later was always there to offer advice and spectate. He watched his last Rugby game on the 18 September, ironically, the 2010 Wiburd Shield final, and his last Cricket match was an hour spent with the boys at the Watson Oval, ASC, on 30 October. He passed away on the 15 November 2010.

As Greg Thornton wrote in An Ode to Don: ‘The real legacy he leaves is not competitions or bells It is more significant and lasting and dare I say pray tell It is the life of one man, whose actions and words Will live in our hearts, Mr Don Amos Wiburd.

‘Bonjour Bathurst’ brings to light how serious the French are about film, and rightly so; the art of cinema owes much of its development to France. The Lumiere brothers Louis et Auguste were the most profound pioneers in the cinema world, and are considered the earliest filmmakers in history, as they created the cinématographe with which the first motion picture was made. So it’s fitting that the country is the home for the world’s most prestigious film festival, Cannes is both the world’s biggest, glitziest film festival and a sort of spiritual concept, played out on the French Riviera each May. This week we take to the playground to discover what type of cinema our fellow students appreciate.
