A conversation with the Head of College

upcoming major events

Mr John Weeks Thank you to all those members of the College community who gave my wife Denise and I such a warm welcome to Scots All Saints this week. We are delighted to be a part of the College community and we are very much looking forward to working with you in the future. During the week, I have had the opportunity to address students at both Scots and All Saints campuses. It was a chance to get them thinking about having some goals and 'dreaming big' for their future. There were two words that I asked them to think about: YET and GRIT. You see, many people young and old alike have a fixed mindset and believe if they can’t do something now, then they never will. Actually, many students give up too early and too easily rather than understanding they are just not there YET. I gave the students the example of Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon. It took until the 11th Apollo mission for this feat to happen because they weren’t YET developed. What enabled that achievement was GRIT, perhaps even more so than knowledge and intelligence. It’s about that passion and drive to achieve goals and being mentally tough to keep going. My challenge to our students is to consider what they want to achieve. I ask them what passion might you pursue, what interests and skills do you want to develop? My assurance to them is that with GRIT – determination, ongoing hard work, by pushing on against the setbacks and disappointments, they can achieve amazing things. This term is a very important time for our Year 12 students with trial examinations. They are not there YET; they are still finishing their course work. This is where GRIT comes in; time to be fully focused, positive and determined. To dream the dream is easy but it takes courage, hard work and perseverance to turn it into a reality.
