We have enjoyed an extremely positive start to the new school year. Thank you once again to all parents and carers for preparing your children so well. They are going ‘great guns’.

We will continue to improve sight lines, markings etc.

One change we need to make permanent is making the main entry ‘one way’. This means that the eastern gate will be entry only. Cars are to enter via this gate, proceed to the drop off/pick up area, and exit via the western gate. This change will ensure a smooth traffic flow and safer route for buses and parents alike.

It is essential that vehicles do not park or stop on the front drive next to the buses, as this will stop all parents from leaving quickly. We will be making this area strictly ‘no parking’ to avoid congestion and ensure students entering and exiting the buses can do so safely.

COVID-19 As advised, there are two cases to date. All protocols followed, and our students are ‘on the mend’.

Rapid Antigen Home Testing (RAHT) Remember to test Sunday and Wednesday evenings. More test kits will be distributed on Friday.

Class teachers will do this with your children so they will be in the school bag.

Journeying towards Easter with a kiss This term, I thought we would look at some of the key moments of the Easter Story as our calendar slowly moves in that direction – 17 April.

To start our series, we begin by looking at one of the great traitors in history. Not Brutus and Cassius who killed Julius Caesar, nor Ephialtes who betrayed the 300 Spartans, but the Apostle Judas Iscariot. Judas is not just a villain because of who he betrayed, but he rises above all others by how he goes about it.

Many of you will know the story. Judas offers to betray Jesus for the price of a slave – thirty pieces of silver. He then takes the temple guard to Jesus and hands Jesus over, not with an outstretched finger, declaring “there is your man!” but rather with a kiss – a Middle Eastern sign of affectionate friendship. Even Jesus seems somewhat surprised at Judas’ self-deception when he responds, “Judas, are you really betraying the Son of Man with a kiss” (Luke 22:48).

The Bible warns us that self-deception can be a problem for us all. For example, the Lord says, “These people honour me with their lips, but their heart is far from me” (Isaiah 29:13, and Mark 7:6). Indeed, even the Apostle Paul shares his internal struggle between what he wants to do and what he does (Romans 7:15). In his book, I told me so, author Gregg Ten Elshof states, “Self-deception is a major part of what defeats spiritual formation” as an individual fails to acknowledge and deal with corruption in their life. This was certainly the case for Judas, who was stealing money from Jesus and the poor, well before he planted the kiss (John 12:5-6).

The Bible, of course, gives us the solution to selfdeception. The New Testament writer James declares that one of the beautiful hallmarks of ‘real’ friendship is the ability to be open and honest about your thoughts, feelings, and actions in a non-judgemental relationship.

He states, “… confess your sins to one another…” (James 5:16). When we open up our lives to a counsellor, Chaplain, or friend and confess to them in the presence of God, God’s healing power begins. Unfortunately, Judas was not willing to do this, which led him to the false belief that he could betray Jesus to the religious authorities without any consequences. Within hours of the kiss, Jesus was on death row, and Judas was overwhelmed by what he had done, “I have betrayed innocent blood” (Matthew 27:4). His life spiralled further

into despair, which meant he never got to see Jesus’ resurrection nor embrace the forgiveness that came with it.

May we all learn from Judas’s first mistake, which was to isolate himself and his secrets from God and others. If only he had someone, he could have confided in. Someone who could have been a sounding board, who could have shown him his own false assumptions and self-deception. Maybe then he could have aspired to the potential that Jesus originally saw in him when he called him to follow.

Start of School Year What a fabulous start all of our students have had this week. I welcome everyone back to a new school year and especially welcome all of our new students who are attending Scots All Saints College for the very first time.

I thank all of our parents and carers for assisting us to make school as safe as possible by adhering to our College’s COVID Safety Plan. For the next few weeks on Fridays, all students in Kindergarten to Year 6 will bring home 2 RAHT test kits. Could these please be administered on Sunday and Wednesday nights. Swimming Carnival The Junior School Swimming Carnival will take place on Friday 18 February at the Junior School swimming pool. Unfortunately, due to COVID Risk Management Plans, parents and carers will not be able to attend the carnival. In order to not mix cohorts, the Carnival will not be conducted in the usual format. All student in Infants will attend together, then we will have the Year 3 and 4 students participate and then the Year 5 and 6 students.

Hats and Water Bottles Could all parents please ensure that their child brings their hat and water bottle to school each day.

I also encourage children to apply sunscreen before they come to school.

If you used Seesaw at Scots All Saints last year or in 2020 you will be able to access your child’s new class via the Seesaw Family app or on the web https://app.seesaw.me/ as soon as students start posting work.

For new students, teachers will send you a unique invite featuring a QR code. When you receive the QR code, you will also receive some information about how to access Seesaw via either your Smartphone or computer. In addition, for families with more than one child in the Junior School you will be able to create a family account.

I encourage everyone to connect to Seesaw and join in their child’s learning journey.

Home Reading and Diaries Diaries have been issued and are a great way for parents to communicate with the classroom teacher.

At the front of the diary is a section for students to record their nightly home reading. Home reading is a great way to build a life-long love of reading and develop early reading skills.

Students are acknowledged for every 30 nights of home reading. After 120 nights of reading, they are presented with a badge. Only one badge can be awarded in a year.

There are five badges students can collect, and it is great to see so many students proudly wearing their badges. Badges are presented in the following order: Blue, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Once students receive a Platinum badge after five years of home reading, there are no further levels. Let’s get reading everyone!

New Home Readers Speaking of home reading, we have ordered a new range of home readers for students in K-2. STEM Lessons All of our K-6 classes were thrilled to commence their weekly STEM lesson this week. Many of our classes were introduced to our Sphero bots. With our Sphero bots, students learn to code or program their Sphero robot to draw, play, write, and more. Year 6 is even designing their own 18hole golf course where they will play Sphero golf! Depending on age, students learn to code using three different coding “canvases” - Draw, Block, and Text - that move from beginner to advanced coding skills. It was a delight to welcome the students back on Monday. Having Stage 4 on this campus makes it complete! The start of the year was certainly different to years past, as the Welcome Assembly was online. Despite this medium for a whole school assembly, it was terrific to have the student body unified together and hearing common messages. The theme for the assembly was collaboration.

Please note that assessment schedules and policies for the year for all subjects are now available. These can be found by accessing the English page on Canvas. They are posted to this location because all students and parents have shared access to this site.

Mr Weeks spoke at length about how the Class of 2021 collaborated and explained how their outstanding HSC results had a lot to do with the cohesion of the cohort. He emphasised that the year group didn’t use lockdowns, COVID and university early entry as an excuse. Instead, they knuckled down and encouraged each other to aim for personal bests. This message provided an appropriate foundation from which to commence the academic year.

The students are to be commended for their adherence to the public health measures we have to adopt in these first four weeks. Examples include queuing in cohorts at the Outdoor Café, staggered times in the dining hall, staying in designated areas at recess and lunch and of course the wearing of masks. Well done everyone!

It has been encouraging to see so many students with the correct hat on at recess and lunch. A special mention to the students in Years 7 and 8 for their compliance. Please ensure your child comes to school each day with a hat if they want to be active. Those without hats are being asked to sit in the shade at recess and lunch.

Following a substantial growth in enrolments ahead of the 2022 school year, a comprehensive review has been undertaken of the College’s own bus fleet, along with assessing the ability of local bus operator’s ability to transport our students to and from our junior and senior campuses.

The College will continue to operate bus services to Orange, Millthorpe, Blayney and Lithgow areas in 2022.

Growth in student numbers from the Blayney and Millthorpe region will see the 57 seat College Coach allocated to a combined Millthorpe/Blayney bus run in 2022. This will see a change to the Lithgow bus service, which will now be divided into two seperate services.

In 2022 a more direct service will operate to and from Lithgow, along with a second bus service being established catering for students from Wallerawang/ Portland/Yetholme/Walang/ Napoleon Reef and Raglan.

However, this service will now operate from the Senior (Scots) campus in the morning, departing at 8.35am and arriving at the Junior (All Saints) campus at 8.50am.

A cross campus service will operate from the Junior (All Saints) campus of an afternoon, departing the Junior school at 3.20pm, arriving at the Senior (Scots) Campus at 3.35pm.

The College understands this will increase the number of students travelling on public buses to and from the Senior campus. Students travelling on public buses will need to apply for a free bus pass using the following link: https://transportnsw.info/tickets-opal/ticket-eligibility-concessions/school-student-travel Students who have moved from the Junior to the Senior Campus in 2022 will need to apply for their bus pass using the link above.

Local bus service providers have confirmed they have enough capacity to cater for the additional student load and are happy to take enquiries from parents to identify the most appropriate bus route for their child.

From the All Saints' College archives

THE SIXTH HEADMASTERREV. GEORGE LINDSAY HERBERT The School’s Greatest Benefactor’ (1923-1946)

After the unavoidable closure of All Saints’ College in 1919, the school site was taken over by the Department of Education, and there was the prevailing sentiment amongst the citizens of Bathurst, the Old Boys of the School and the Anglicans of the Bathurst Diocese to consider the best means of reviving the institution.

Bishop Long strongly favoured reopening but could not see his way to finance it with Church funds.

The opportunity arose in August 1922 when Rev L.G.H. Watson, who had formerly been a master at All Saints’ under Mr Britten, submitted to Bishop Long an extremely favourable proposal which led to the reopening of the College on its present site of “Esrom” and its twenty acres. The financial basis of the reopening was favourable to the Diocese and the Old School. Rev.Watson and his assistant Headmaster Mr. C. C. F McLeod would undertake the whole expense and risk of restarting All Saints’ College, but that “if the Bathurst Diocese cared to assume control at any time they would hand it over entirely in return for the capital invested”.

The opening was to take place at the beginning of 1923, with the prospect of only ten boys to be enrolled.

However, it soon became clear the number would be passed, and the Esrom building would not be enough, so the neighbouring “Travellers’ Rest”, later referred to as the “Old Pub” was purchased to accommodate an

enrolment of 31 boys. Within four and a half years, the diocese was able to take over the ownership of the whole establishment, Watson and McLeod accepting mortgages and the College becoming a Church School.

Rev. Watson had a distinguished career in education, successfully assistant master at Cooerwull Academy, All Saints’ College, Trinity Grammar, Melbourne, and later Headmaster of Monaro Grammar School, Cooma. He was also a first-class athlete with a University Blue in Tennis in 1906.

Colin Cameron Fraser McLeod joined Rev. Watson to re-establish All Saints’, and he occupied the position of viceprincipal and senior master from 1923 to 1950. He served under Watson, Catley and Evans. His enthusiasm for football was a powerful influence in re-establishing Rugby Union not only at All Saints’ but throughout the west of the state. His memorial is in the memorial entrance gates to the school erected by the school's old boys in 1960.

The school assembled on Thursday, 8th February 1923, and the first boys received were E.L. Baker of Tumut and H.R. Watt, the first boarders at the reopened school. Very soon, with growing enrolments, there was a need for more staff as Watson and McLeod each had to teach two forms at once and Mrs Watson being the matron, housekeeper and hostess, and the overseer to the smooth running of the school.

The boys did much of the cleaning and landscaping during the first two years.

They helped put down the first cricket pitch and maintain it, repaired the cracked tennis court and drew water from the well to water it. Later in 1932, the need for a first-rate playing field had become urgent. Some money collected by the Old Boys Association was used to finance the construction of a 'Memorial Playing Field' later to be named 'Watson Oval', a memorial to Rev. Watson. In 1941, the oval was improved by the addition of an entrance constructed with 2500 bricks from the old College buildings and this oval, for some time, has been considered being the best playing oval in the district.

The rapid revival of the College under Rev. Watson and the consequent filling of the old buildings quickly led to a situation in which boys had to be turned away. For a time, ‘Walmer House” across the road near the Macquarie River had to be leased and occupied. The need for increased buildings and larger financial resources was urgent. Operations began with the erection of a quadrangle formation to extend from 'Esrom House', which would remain the Headmaster’s residence. Under the supervision of Bishop Long and the assistance of the Old Boys of the School the School Chapel was moved from the old School site in 1925, the new wing was erected in 1927 and the School became the property of the Church of England governed by a council with the Bishop of the diocese as president and the Corporate of Trustees appointed by Synod.

The first twelve years of Rev. Watson’s headmastership saw All Saints’ firmly re-established. It had reopened with

enrolment in the first term of 31 boys until 1928. There were 108 boarders and 12-day boys. The depression hit with enrolment falling, but as the financial crisis eased and Mrs Watson wrote: “We learnt that the thrill of building up again could be that of reopening the old School”. Watson and McLeod once again accepted the full burden of finance and control, which they would do for a third time at the outbreak of the Second World War by salary reductions and returning profits and paying rent to the Diocese.

The second twelve years saw further changes in the curriculum, and Rev. Watson, catering to the needs of his pupils, established classes in music, wool classing, dancing, boxing and physical culture. The Agricultural course was added to the syllabus as Watson wisely felt that many of the boys had come from farming and grazing districts and, together with carpentry courses, prepared the boys well for life after school.

The effect of the Second World War on the teaching staff was very marked, the shortage at times being acute and a continual source of worry to Rev. Watson. The headmaster and his wife were untiring in their efforts to ensure that All Saints’ College should not only carry on, but that the School should devote its energy in support of the fighting forces, in which no less than 290 of its sons were serving by supporting the Patriotic Funds and the Red Cross.

At the beginning of the second term of 1944 the headmaster was hit by a car as he was walking out from Bathurst and was out of action for a term. He made a remarkable recovery, but his health suffered a severe setback with worry and anxiety on both Rev. and Mrs Watson. Largely as a result of the accident, Rev. Watson retired at the end of 1946 after almost a quarter of a century, marked by two of the most critical events in the history of the school: the financial depression and Second World War.
